If the Bills are thinking about both Thomas and Kelly at #11, a trade down makes a lot of sense, since the odds of both of them being picked before the 20th pick are small. The trade I think makes the most sense to both teams, contract demands aside, is the Eagles and Bills flipping 1st round picks (which would equal a 2nd rounder) and the Bills getting Lito Sheppard. The Bills still get either Thomas or Kelly, plus Sheppard, and the Eagles get their pick of OL before the likely run of OL starting with Denver.

There are some intriguing potential middle round picks (3rd though 5th round) this year. A strong safety like Zbikowski or Steltz could be a nice complement to Whitner. Big WR's who could fall like Bowman or Monk. A few big TE's with potential like Bennett, Davis from Michigan State, and Cottam. It would be nice to pick up a 4th round compensatory pick.

It says here that they are offering up their 2nd round pick and a player for Jeremy Shockey.
Honestly, the kid seems like a bit of a headcase to me, but he sure can run patterns and catch the football. I don't remember a time when the Bills had a TE who could pretty much do everything, although I was a huge Pete Metz fan.
Can a guy like this grow up? One would think, but who really knows?
If (big if) he has his head on straight, he can get the ball into the endzone. Do you guys think that he is worth our 2nd, and perhaps a 3rd or 4th in 09? Or an extra 4th or 5th this year?
Tough call, but we are desperate for a TE to the point that I would consider it.
If we had an established veteran QB, I'd say yes to Shockey. But given that he whines and pouts every time he doesn't get the ball, I don't think that would be good for Edwards development or Losman no matter how talented Shockey is.

Whose Clements agent? If they tampered with Briggs, there's no doubt they did the same with Clements.

I think the Bills will go WR in the 1st round but not at #11. Carolina, Chicago, and Detroit at 13, 14, and 15 all have extra 3rd rounders. Detroit might want to jump in front of Chicago to take Mendenhall. Chicago and Carolina might want to jump in front of Denver to take an Offensive Tackle. The Bills will then Take Devin Thomas at #14 or #15.

I remember posting and providing a YouTube about WR Jordy Nelson before his work out at the Combine and now I see more and more people clamoring for him. He's the type of player that would be a fan favorite in Buffalo and I sure hope that we do draft him. Here's what I would like to see Buffalo do in the draft. This of course is based on us keeping all of our current picks.
1st rd- DE Derrick Harvey
2nd rd- CB Tracy Porter
3rd rd- WR Jordy Nelson
4th rd- DT DeMario Pressley
5th rd- QB Kevin O'Connell
6th rd- TE Jacb Tamme
7th rd- C Fernando Velasco
The Bills have almost forced themselves into taking a WR at #11 unless they can trade down or trade back up into the 1st round. They have to come out of this draft with one of the top flight WR's in this draft if the offense is going to improve.

Just saw on the NFL channel that the Bills signed CB Will James to a 2 yr deal.....anyone else see this? Nothing from Chris Brown on it yet.
Don't know much about him, but he is a non-midget CB, so that alone is good. Let's hope he can play. Now we need a non-midget WR who can play.

The problem with trading up is you have to find a willing trade partner. The longer you wait to pull the trigger on trading up, the more limited your options become (see Roethlisberger in 2004). If the Bills truly want Peterson, they will most likely have to trade up to #6 to get him, since Washington has openly shopped that pick and is in dire need of more Day 1 picks. So probably the more appropriate question is 'Would you trade the 2nd round pick to move up and grab Peterson?', since even if he lasts until the 10th pick, Houston would most likely just take him instead of getting an additional 3rd round pick.
-
Needing a volume of players, the advantage to the swap is we stay away from a big contract for a rookie and we still get a pretty good player at #30.
My problem is we need impact players and those tend to be higher in the draft. Be it Willis, Okoye or Branch, they will be gone by 30. Give em the second round pick or some sort of performance based pick for next year. I say stay at 12.
I agree. I'd prefer to give them the 2nd rounder and hold on to 12, trade down to someone like Denver (who covets a pass rusher - Moss probably doesn't last until their pick) at 21 for their 2nd rounder. Then take poslusny or meacham at 21 who will both be gone at 30 and still have a 2nd rounder to take a DT, CB or LB.

That 12th pick should be off limits. I think this year's 2nd rounder should be able to get it done. I doubt anyone is giving up a 1st rounder for Turner, and our 2nd rounder is in the top half of the round. Willis and Turner would be a nice score and fill the team's 2 greatest needs. If Peterson doesn't fall to 12, we'd most likely take a RB in the 2nd round anyway and Turner is probably better than anyone who'd be available there.

For all we know, John McCargo will be the man this season at DT. We don't know. The reason guys go in the first is because they've got more upside and better physical skills. We had 2 firsts in 06, two in 04 under TD and I wouldn't rule it out. I like having an extra 3rd to play with. Looking down the 06 DT draft class, there wasn't much after Ngata and the underachieving Bunkley.
I like Okoye because he's got tremendous talent and physical skills. And I think he's going to get better. Combine that with great character and he's my wish for Buffalo. If you trade down in the first, you should get another second, but of course whomever you trade with may not have that high 2nd pick you'd typically like. Even so, having 2 seconds is a nice addition to having a low first rounder.
I don't think McCargo is even able to run yet in his recovery. The fact that the Bills haven't brought in any free agents at the DT or LB position when Marv stated we needed to improve there tells me they are targeting those 2 positions at the top of the draft. If Peterson is there at 12, the Bills would have to take him, but I think they have Chris Brown lined up knowing Peterson dropping to 12 is a long shot. Okoye and Willis seem like Marv players but both could be gone. Branch does not seem like a Marv player, but how do you pass up a guy like Branch when there is such a big need for that type of player.
-
I also think the reason we haven't signed a FA back yet is because Marv probably didn't promise them the Bills aren't taking a RB in Round 1. Doesn't mean it's definitely a RB in Round 1, but I would guess it is either a RB or LB with the 1st pick.

I also remember the 2004 end of the year Pittsburgh game debacle at the Ralph. I had seats right behind the Bills bench. The game was winding down and it was clear Pittsburgh was going to win. Jennings comes off the field in what he probably knew was his last game as a Bill and throws his helmet in disgust and dejectedly puts his hands over his face. McGahee comes over to console him like 'hey, it's alright man, no big deal'. Jennings wanted nothing to do with McGahee and could not be consoled. I know that was Willis's 1st full year, but that to me summed up his whole attitude. 'Hey, it's no big deal. I'll just keep doing my thing.' It might not be fair to expect the same passion out of players as Kelly had, but I know of no fanbase that is as passionate about winning as Bills fans, and rightly or wrongly McGahee didn't fit in here.
-
I never watched OJ play, but McGahee didn't show 10% the passion that Kelly showed on the field. People remember Kelly chasing down players who intercepted his passes 10 yards out of bounds. Even if he was partying every night, on Sundays Kelly was the ultra-competitor and he'd get in his teammates' faces when they missed assignments. Bills fans loved that. McGahee acted as if he didn't give a crap and the only time he ever showed any emotion was when he called himself the best RB in the NFL. Bills fans hated that.
-
Bottom line is he was a decent back who most definitely was not worth the hassle.
-
We also gave up a 1st for Bledsoe that same year, so all things considered, that washes with the Peerless move.
-
Brown and Dillon are being looked at as backups in my opinion. I could see Marv packaging picks to move up to the Redskins #6 pick if Peterson lasts.
-
Good short yardage and goal-to-go option. Would he be willing to play that role for the Bills?
-
So you'd be also switching the Ravens 3rd with Bills 4th (instead of obtaining the Ravens 4th)? That's around 190 points which is in the same ball park.
I'm just wary of Turner's contract demands.
I think he'd take something similar to what Henry got from Denver. He's not in a situation where he can be picky with the compensation San Diego is demanding. Otherwise he plays for $2m this year and risks injury and it is easy to be forgotten when you are not the featured back.

Going by the Trade Value Chart and using the Thomas Jones Bears/Jets trade as a guide:
http://www.gbnreport.com/tradevaluetable.html
Ravens and Bills switch picks 29 (Ravens 1st Rd) and 43 (Bills 2nd rd) = 140 points
Ravens give us a 4th round/#125 pick = 47 points
Total points = 187 pretty close to the Thomas deal.
Note: Bears and Jets switched picks in the second round which was 200 points on the trade value chart for Thomas Jones (mid-third is the comparison)
I think it's fair to say that Jones and McGahee are on the same level in terms of value. The Bills could then draft Lynch and Posluszny in the 1st round, or draft Patrick Willis and use the second to trade to San Diego for Turner (pending a long term deal of course). The first scenario is much cheaper for the Bills.
This would be a fair deal on both sides. I hope it gets done.
This would be a great strategy to acquire Turner if you don't have to surrender your original 1st and 3rd rounder. Get the Ravens 1st and 3rd rounders, give them our 2nd, 4th and McGahee and get Turner with the Ravens picks at the end of each round. Then the Bills still have their 1st and 3rd to get a LB and DT.
-
That represents a high 3rd rounder per the draft trade value chart. Have to figure the Bills think McGahee is worth at least that.
-
No. I see Lynch rated as a top 15 guy all over the place, but if the Bills don't feel that way, I don't want them to take him. In fact, I think they are in a quandry because next years crop of backs looks better, but they need someone now. Drafting a subpar back in the 2nd this draft would be a waste. I realize that some 2nd rounders turn out great, but I feel you should play the odds, and get a top ranked guy, or don't bother, for the reason given above. An "average" back probably won't take you to the Promised Land. Hence the Super Bowl winner comment.
I agree. Marv's Super Bowl teams revolved around the talents of Thurman. He will not settle for an average back. I don't know if the trading McGahee posture is a ploy to light a fire under McGahee, but if he does get a 2nd rounder for him, it would not surprise me to see the Bills package some picks and players to move up and get Peterson.
-
I'd think a depth veteran RB once the price comes down near the vet minimum and perhaps a CB like Kiwaukee Thomas if not himself. If Spikes is cut/traded, then I think a LB will also be brought in. That leaves LB, DT, and RB on day 1 of the draft.
-
maybe this will calm some people down that we are just going after low priced guys.
At this point I BILLIEVE that we will...

This is why it was dumb not to sign Bryant Johnson to a 1 year deal as an insurance policy for the scenario that is currently unfolding. If Cromartie falls to 11, I think we take him and wait for the 2nd round for a WR or TE. If Cromartie is not there, we try our best to trade down and then consider Devin Thomas or even a guy like Cason later in the 1st round. There seems to be too much risk surrounding Kelly, Sweed, and Hardy to touch them in the 1st round. I'd bet one of them is around at pick #41.
