  1. Yeah, that kind of rhetoric coming from both sides of the debate, for sure. I also think it's safe to say that guns are marketed to people who have no respect for them and no real idea how to use them because there are "predators" out there and one has to "protect the family and property." The kind of people who are swept into this give all the people who are really careful and respectful a bad name. I suppose it's just like the rest of society that way, though.
  2. Fear sells. As an aside, gun rights and ownership aside (I have no problem with them as long as people respect them for what they are and the laws are enforced and obeyed), the gun industry is as guilty of this as the media. And I would hardly say that Iraq's emergence as a "suddenly free country" is going unnoticed. The election was a gigantic story and a success in the face of a lot of naysayers (I myself thought it would not go as successfully, though my hopes and thoughts were with all the people courageous enough to go out and vote). This story stemmed the tide of negative ones. Now, the media feels more comfortable going back to the use of the obvious fear that our men and women are in harm's way and capitalizing on it. This is a complicated struggle and should be covered as such, but I will agree that there is a tendency to fish for the bad stuff because a lot of people are still not comfortable with the way we went to war. Regardless, the media is sensational to the core because it has to go to great lengths to get our attention in a world with myriad distractions. And this includes fishing for stories, fabricating stories, fabricating identities as paid spokespersons and journalists.
  3. One isolated headline from Bloomberg (owned by a Republican mayor, BTW) doesn't cut it. if you were citing a comprehensive quantitative or textual study, that would be one thing, but you're just airing out this one like so much dirty laundry to bring up the point that there is always something to be angry about, and cite one article out of context to point out that "Yes, Virginia, there is a liberal media." No mention of the fact that the party that is most angry about the media has almost total control of the government, and even if they didn't, it wouldn't matter because the "opposition" is so limp-wristed it can hardly be named as such. It is ludicrous to point to one side or the other as the source of the problems when it's the system that has been poisoned by power and greed.
  4. The myth continues. The only thing the "press" is slave to is capital. Whatever will sell papers, ad space/time, etc. etc. Same for CNN as it is for Fox News. Same for the Washington Post as it is for the Washington Times. Most "reporting" is so devoid of content that the Daily Show, fake backdrops and all, provides more truth.
  5. This is not a criticism, but does anyone know what "market value" for the #9 pick is? Is it significantly lower than what we'd be paying Nate? I just can't see it being worth it investing all that money in an unproven guy if the figures are anywhere NEAR close. I think NC is one worth paying for. This is all of course assuming the Skins are even interested.
  6. Penn St. backs historically have not done well in the NFL. Especially ones with bad knee injuries.
  7. Lord knows birth control and women in church leadership positions are practically chutes to Hell. Welcome to the 21st century, fellas. How's about living in reality?
  8. If they would also target some of the people who believe social, as well as monetary liberties, are being trampled on by too much government (like ludicrous marriage amendments, etc. etc.) they might become a formidable political force.
  9. Right about now, the funk soul brothaBOOYA.
  10. Thoughts: Finally, we get to play KC at home instead of Arrowhead. NFC South should mean some interesting matchups for us. Not thrilled about having to go back out to Oakland again, or NE in prime time (though maybe the big story will be "Redemption Game" instead of "Tom Brady is one cool dude"). Sucks that Miami again got a break by getting us at home in December, and we finish with two on the road. But no road trips of more than two games, that's nice. Wouldn't overlook this Houston opener, though. I think the winner of that one gets a wild card this year.
  11. Too bad the "alternative" isn't any better. Carte blanche government rules!
  12. Kevin Sylvester was one of the good guys. He used to be involved with WCVF on the Fredonia campus, for which I later did some shifts and worked as Program Director. A lot of good alums from that station out in the radio world.
  13. To me, this is great. It means that if Modrak did want a GM position, the Bills could offer it right here in the ideal situation, working with a partner whom he respects and enjoys sharing duties with. I think unless there is a big power struggle in the future, or Modrak develops ambitions to take on a weaker team and rebuild it, we are set in the front office for years to come.
  14. So the Catholics should stop bashing themselves?
  15. My condolences, Ramius. Your father will always be alive in the memories you and your family share.
  16. What do you expect from a thread that started with subtle Protestant-bashing? People get so worked up about organized religion that any personal revelation tends to be obscured. When are people going to learn?
  17. I understand the gist of your post, but what are people supposed to do when Wal-Mart offers the only pharmacy within a 30-mile radius? Monopolies are not too different than state-dominated functions when you get right down to it. But at least one of them is supposed to be of, for and by the people.
  18. My sentiments exactly. Just when you think Buffalo has enough problems. These guys are real pieces of work.
  19. My god, that's funny. Poor kid. My favorite part, leading out of the softball: "Oh no. ... ... continuing on..." Damn. Hope this kid isn't scarred for life.
  20. get well soon, Mr. Jennings. Chemo on top of lung cancer has got to be torture.
  21. I have been looking for awhile for the old Blue Jays powder-blue jersey, customizable if possible (would like to get a #37 Dave Stieb one made up). Anybody know of a place where this can be found reasonably (definitely under $200)? I'm sick of this boring new Devil Rays style look.
