  1. Come on, Bill. You're smarter than that. Remember the Pats-Bears game in the snow earlier this year, when the Pats won 36-7? Brady dominated the Bears, throwing for 151 yards to Branch and 115 to Welker. Hernandez and Gronkowski combined for 62 yards. Cutler and his Mallett-like arm had no TDs and two picks. Olsen had one catch for 6 yards.

Point is, a win is great any way you can get.

  2. Consider: (using this draft chart) Assume the Cardinals are batshit crazy about Peterson, CB, LSU or Newton, QB, Auburn, etc. and they want him at #3, because they don't think he will make it to 5. That alone costs them this year's 1st and 2nd(and maybe we give them our 5th). 2 Spots? Expensive, huh? One hopes expensive enough even for the "trade down"/"Buddy Nix(or insert GM here) sucks no matter what" bots to see reason.

Speaking of morons, how about a more likely candidate for this lunacy: Redskins @ 10. The Skins could want to move up for the QB, DT, DE, CB, and even LB positions. But what will it cost them? This year's 1st, 2nd, 3rd and next year's 3rd(trading their entire draft this year doesn't even add up). If there is a team dumb enough for this, it certainly is the Skins. Don't forget: they will be trying to unload Haynesworth . That, plus a 4-3 Wannstedt coaching, who knows?

You know that chart is not legally binding, right?

  3. I think you're in the minority on that. They did miss a beat - and the playoffs that year. Granted they were 11-5, but only had the Dolphins as competition in the AFC East. It was a team loaded with talent and FA's. But without Brady, there were a foot note. Take Brady out of the picture the last several years and Belicheat would be a solid winning coach with a great FA and owner to help. He uses the player's talents well. He's a great coach, but he's not a genius. I'll also point out that the glut of his assistants haven't panned out all that well. They would have if they had taken Brady with them.

It's not like that was a team with an average quarterback. It was a seventh round pick starting for the first time. And he still won ten games. There's probably two dozen QBs in the league that Belichick could have taken deep into the playoffs that year.

And for this thread, if I was starting an expansion team, I would pick Jim Harbaugh as my head coach.

  4. Pretty much everyone would agree that Bill Belichick is the best coach in football. But who's #2?

Seems like there's a lack of quality HCs and a gulf between Belichick and the rest. But I'd nominate Ravens HC John Harbaugh. He inherited a team with a bad record. Some stars on defense, yes, but virtually no offense. They drafted wisely with Flacco, Ngata and Rice. And made good FA moves like acquiring Boldin. And they can win now with offense too.

Mike McCarthy in Green Bay I'd rate 3rd for the job they've done drafting and dealing with key injuries this season.

Are you talking about coaches or GMs? Because it's Ozzie Newsome that's making those moves.

And FWIW, Ngata got there long before Harbaugh.

  5. Howard Simon was talking this morning about how Rex Ryan and others are now of the belief that the way to build a defense is from the backfield in. The thought is that lockdown corners make everyone on the D better, it improves the pass rush, etc. Also, is it me or does it seem as if there are fewer first round cornerback busts than any other position? With all that said, if they don't go QB or Defensive line at number 3, I'll be sick to my stomach.

That was the same logic with Spiller. A dynamic back will make the offensive line look better by turning nothing into something and will make the QB look better by giving him an outlet and keeping the rush at bay.

  6. "*The Bills want to build their defense around middle linebacker Paul Posluszny, and have wanted to get him under contract before he becomes a free agent in the offseason. Problem? The 30 percent rule. He made $700,000 in 2009, and he can’t make more than 30 percent more than that in a new deal. Posluszny therefore, is basically unsignable until a new CBA is in place."

  7. Not just Cowher. Look at all the other "big name" coaches: Billick, Schottenhimer, Martz. Gruden got some looks but Shanny is coming up small in DC.

    PTR

Maybe it's just my own bias, but I think there is a difference in the quality of hiring Cowher over the other coaches you listed. None of them had competitive teams for as long as he did. Those guys don't seem to have the same draw as Cowher. I think Gruden might be the closest comparison, but he is only facing his third year out of the league to Cowher's fifth. That, and he is six years younger.

Why would Cowher want to go to any of those places - especially Carolina now that Luck's out of the Draft and Claussen is the QB? Doesn't sound like a guaranteed recipe for success to me. Plus, as Simon has said before, he'd better hope he can bring Dick LeBeau with him if he does come out of hiding.

He has to pick some place sooner or later. Real plum jobs don't open up. You can argue that one of the seven openings this year has a franchise QB in place (Dallas). So if he doesn't get to bring Dick Lebeau, does that mean he's done coaching?

  8. So far, there have been seven openings - Denver, Minnesota, Dallas, San Francisco, Oakland, Carolina, and Cleveland - and the only team that has been remotely connected to Cowher is Miami. And if you believe what you read in the press, they weren't willing to fire Jeff Ireland to bring on Cowher's handpicked GM.

I get that Cowher wants to pick the perfect team, but (1) he's not going to find a great quarterback on a team without a coach anyway, (2) this will be his fifth straight year out of the league, and that is a long time, and (3) Mike Tomlin's continued success sure seems to minimize his accomplishments.

Is it possible the league is not as high on him as we were?

  9. Ay some positions yes, but at OT for example there are going to be normal mid 2nd rounders going in teh 1st because there isnt elite talent at OT this year. I would be fine with tradeing back but I think we could get more by going after 2012 1st rounders.

I think you and I are going to be agreeing a lot this offseason.

  10. Yes. The only one even remotely worth #3 is Newton and that’s only if he is a football genius which I don’t believe he is. I wont be sitting down with him in a film room between now and April like Gailey/Nix are going to tho. And IF he is that he is headed to Carolina. What I do know is Mallet and Locker stink, and that Blaine Gabberts only touter is McShay which doesn’t bode well for him.

You need to pay more attention. Kiper has Gabbert ranked even higher, at 9th overall and the top QB.

  11. I think Tebows set there, and the Broncos will try and deal Orton for picks.

Agreed. The GM who drafted Tebow is still in place. It's not even clear what actual football authority Elway will have.

btw that was a top 15 defense luck dismanted tonight. So much for the "oh they don't play anyone out west so blah blah".

Let's give the other ten members of the Stanford O some credit, too. You could drive a truck through some of those running holes.

  12. Getting this guy at the top of the 2nd would be ideal for us. He can sit a year or 2 behind Fitz. He has the measureables, he just needs to put in the work in reading defenses and making smart decisions, which is what Fitz is very good at.

I'm sure we'll get into this more in the off season. but is there any evidence that sitting helps a quarterback improve more than playing? I mean actual evidence, not anecdotal stuff. I'd even take a strong logical argument.
