Want to start saving money in health care?
John Adams replied to John Adams's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I also don't fear death. Like you, I have no idea what comes next but fearing something that inevitable seems a waste of time. And delaying it when you're near the inevitable end makes no sense as well. -
Why is this already a fight? Some consensus builder. Here's an idea that would help us all and even before he presents it, he's calling people out. Horrible leadership. Horrible. . http://money.cnn.com/2010/06/28/news/econo...icit_reduction/

Want to start saving money in health care?
John Adams replied to John Adams's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
My wife is a hospice social worker and it shocks me how few people choose hospice care. I would much rather die in my home, not in pain, with the hospice workers helping me manage my end of life care, than in a hospital stuck full of needles. This is one of those areas where we in the US are WAY behind Europe. Oddly, a lot of religious people are opposed to hospice, which is probably why it's reputation is so bogged down with negative perception. -

Kagen hearings, in case you wanted to watch a little
John Adams replied to erynthered's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Challenging is fine. Threatening to fillibuster and calling her unfit for the job is another. For many in the GOP, this is proving to be yet another embarrassing campaign. But we'll all flock to our local incumbents in November. We always do. -
I did the TV/theater upgrade 1 year ago and am thrilled with my purchase. I agree nearly 100% with BillsRUs above. Plasma has by far the best picture, still. LED and LCd may catch up some day but nothing out there in your price range will give you the quality picture plasma will give you. Just pay attention to the specs and you'll see that LED/LCD are still catching up to plasma. Plasma has it's own drawbacks though. First, it has a shiny glass screen so it reflects ambient light. This can be annoying in bright rooms because the reflections will be on the glass, distracting from the great picture. Second, while plasma is thin, it's not as thin as LED. They wall-mount just fine but they will normally require more space off the wall because of this thickness and because they run hotter than LEDs. For the price, you won't get better quality than plasma. 3D is absurd. I hate 3D movies and find them interesting only in small doses. Otherwise the blur bothers me. The other point I have to emphasize is that if you get this TV, you will want to get a theater and blu-ray player. Even a starter theater with speakers and blu-ray player will take a 600-1000 bite out of your budget. And don't forget that to get the most out of the TV, you'll need HD cable (or HD DirecTV), both of which add to your monthly bill. If you have TiVo, you'll want the HD Tivo or all your programs will record in standard def. The warning is this: entering the HD world costs a lot of money--a lot more than just the TV.

Did you get that newsflash from the Department of Redundancy Department? -
Please merge this and the "60 years ago today" thread. Happy Birthday man.

On the goals, it would be great. Leave offsides to the refs. Would also be good to institute some penalty (mandatory sub perhaps) whenever the ref has to stop play for an "injury."

Shocking. Listening to the NED-SVK game on radio and the announcer admitted to not seeing the second goal in real time because the TV was showing the replay. WTF? The radio guys aren't watching the game but are watching TV? They didn't even try to hide the fact. They said, "We didn't see what lead to this goal because the TV feed was still on the replay of the play before." Jesus H ESPN. That's embarrassing. Glad to see NED advance. And looking forward to Brazil later. Always fun to see them.

My new rooting interest. Wish I was watching the game now. Listening on the radio. Also pulling for Germany.

New Iphone can do everything but make phone calls
John Adams replied to Fingon's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Mine works awesome. Best phone I've ever had and have no issues. And I don't even have a case yet. -
You don't watch much soccer. A. He was sick all week. B. He made the pass that set up the winner in the Algeria game. C. He scored 6 goals to lead all players in the qualifiers. Without those 6 goals, the US isn't in the World Cup. Not a great world cup for him but not terrible. For a 20 year old, he'll be back.

Free rubbers for Tots in Provincetown, Mass
John Adams replied to stuckincincy's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Schools, condom distribution, and sex ed are all colossal wastes of time. They are not why Swedish pregnancy rates are lower. Parenting and communal relationships between families are why Sweden is better-off on this. The absentee parent is the norm in the USA and the parent who never leaves home except to get a pack of smokes is relatively normal. THAT is the difference and it can't be solved by showing kids a film and handing them a condom, despite liberal wishes to the contrary. (This is as close as I can get to a cincy impression BTW...I actually always think today is better than yesterday!) On a related note, a good parent explains what sex is and how it works at a very early age. Not to encourage it but to answer questions honestly. I think we had those talks at about age 4-5 with my daughter. She wanted to know where babies came from. We told her. End of story. -

I don't know what you mean by Conservative. In his day, he wanted a larger federal government role and opposed the anti-federalists like Jefferson/Madison/Monroe. He also signed the Alien and Sedition Acts. I wouldn't comfortably pin him down with modern labels. -
Moratorium on deep water drilling lifted

Why are you calling m Shirley? And if it's a reference Bluesky drew from his panoply of life experiences, I don't get it. -

John Adams replied to Fingon's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Yeah...good reference, err, Henry. I got my ass kicked once and that was because I accused a neighborhood kid of stealing my bike (which he did). He said he was just borrowing it and that's why it was in his garage. When I went to take it back, he beat the piss out of me. I learned some important lessons that day, not the least of which is that you don't underestimate the strength of a borderline retard AND few kids are tougher than those in foster homes. -
How Do You Solve A Problem Like McCrystal?

Not an important point of dispute. I was trying distill his 4 page missive down to its essence.
