  1. I'd cry too, if there were millions within my grasp...and be happy to say that the reason for my sobbing was my love of the game and go on and wring my hands about these evil forces all around me. Those forces that can't find their way to give me more millions so I can dry my eyes and unburden my heavy heart.

It's tough being 21, and not being able to sign a contract for millions of dollars. I'm a victim of needing more money. It's not my fault! - that darn extra money is keeping me away from - my love of the game.

You and I are normally on the same page, stuckincincy, especially lately. So please don't mind if I feel the need to second your posts.

I couldn't agree more with you more, my friend, and very well said.

Maybin - either tack 5% onto last year's #11 pick salary, or do subtle derivations between the closest signed guys to you, top and bottom, come up with a number and get into to camp.

  2. I'm sorry, but aren't a lot of you guys leaving out that fact that before Vick even went to jail a couple of years ago that he really wasn't that good of a quarterback?

Do some of you think, and I am not knocking you if you do, that going away to jail and not playing any football for years gave him insight to be a better and smarter QB than the one we have now?

  3. I would love to see almost every player from the SB era go in to the hall, but it wont happen

Tasker - Should be a no brainer, he redefined the role of special teams and was a pro bowler. But lack of overall time on the field may hurt him

Reed - Along with Jerry Rcie help define YAC. His numbers continue to fall on the list as the game transitions to a pass happy offense

Talley - Bruce said it best "he sacrificed his numbers for the better of the team". We the Bills fans know how he got screwed for pro bowls and he will get screwed for the Hall. BUT if Harry Carson can make it Daryl should too.

Hull - One of the best lineman over the years. But I dont see it

Richter, Ballard, Woolford, Brown, Fina, etc. - No chance

Hansen, Seals, Wright, Paup, Conlon, Bennett, Jones, Odoms, Williams, Smith, Kelso, Smith - No Chance

If TO finishes his career as a Bill...do we celebrate him in the hall as a Buffalo Bill?

I had this conversation with Bagel a couple of weeks ago.

No chance for Ruben Brown? 4 time all-pro and nine time pro bowler in 13 season. I'm not saying he's a lock and I am not even saying that he gets in, but I'd probably ease off that "no chance" tag.

  4. You were overlooking the obvious, Grasshopper.

If you have Directv, you can alawys use your remote and search function. Just put in keyword "NFL" and you'd see all the upcoming events.

I also have mine set to Buffalo Bills so it records automatically. Works great, except that I have to keep deleting the old movie "Annie Oakley", starring Barbara Stanwyk.

Man, do I feel stupid. I did not even know we could do that with DirecTV, and I've had it for 8 years, and the HD box for 2.

  5. He's played against the Bills twice now and has pretty much had his way. In the Raiders' 2005 blowout victory over the Bills, he had five tackles and two sacks. In the Raiders' choke job against the Bills last year, he had four tackles and an impressive half-sack (at least on screen). I presume he knows Langston Walker's game quite well too. I think opening night is going to be pretty ugly.

Gotta agree with Peter King -- the Bills have become the Baltimore Orioles. Wilson would have been better off to move the team to the AFC Central when realignment occurred rather than stick with the east because of "rivalries."

Don't, Dave, seriously, don't. Don't go there, because I was one of those whinny little b******* all those years ago that would have loved for us to be in the Central division - wherein the furthest city away from us, driving wise, is still closer than our closest opponent in the East - wherein Baltimore would have been a natural fit in the East, as we would in the central - wherein all the teams are at the pretty much same pay scale - WHEREIN BILL PARCELS WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN LINKED TO EVERY OTHER AFC EAST FRANCHISE EXCEPT FOR US!!!

SO DON'T GO THERE OR I...WILL...LOSE IT!!!!!!!!!

    Peace, Bills brethren and sisteren.

  6. The one panelist (who says he's from Buffalo) claimed that if Owens acts up, we Buffalonians will be all over him, not because he's acting up or not performing, but because he's black. Rome and the other panelist both seemed to be rolling their eyes on that stupidity

I happened to catch this last night, as well. Considering Vincent Smith (i believe that's who it was) is a Buffalo native, I am not going to jump all over him for his opinion of Buffalo or Buffalonians.

BUT, it was a little insulting, not as much his comments directly about racial issues in this city, but how it is better in other cities, as he mentioned Atlanta...? (yes)...and from his comments you can assume he also includes TOs other cities: Dallas, San Fran, and Philly due to Smith's comments that the racial component would be WORSE in Buffalo than in TOs prior stops.

    Come on, Vincent. Come on.

  7. If this is true, -and I've routinely questioned both reporters- then LW doesn't have 'much' upstairs. If I'm not mistaken, LT is the second highest paid position in the NFL. Succeed, and he'll make more $$ then he could even imagine in his wildest dreams.

With this attitude, if accurate, he'd probably be broke 5 years after he retires anyway.

    Suck it up, Lumpy! :flirt:

    P.S. who's out there for a tryout.. :P

    Right on, Chandler.

Look, I can imagine how tricky it will be for him and if he doesn't catch on it may slightly jeopardize his career.

HOWEVER, I believe he is in the 3rd year of a five year deal, and if he shows up this year and even improves greatly next year, this guy can walk into One Bills Drive after his 4th year and say, "Let's start talking long term; I'm thinking 6 years, 60 million dollars sounds about right."

...and considering this conversation is taking place in January/February 2011, he might just get it.

  8. I know they adjusted the ratings this year, where most teams seem to be a little lower than they were in previous years, AND I know it is mostly based on the aggregate of ratings but DAAAAMMMNNNNNN I would be pissed if I were a Dolphin fan.

...Last year's AFC East Division champions with an overall rating of 77?!

The third place Jets at 78, and the last place Bills at 76?

Man I can hear the complaining from South Beach now.

EDIT: I like the Chargers team, in general, but...really?...they're 11 points better than us (88).

?...A team we beat who we finished one game behind?

  9. With this offensive line I think its a risky option, they must think they will be fine in their protection schemes,me I am not sold on that.

Pitta, this is not a knock on you, hell this isn't a knock on anybody, but, as long as you know the plays and you have a smart center (which we do), whether you have 35 seconds in between plays to digest it, or 15, it really doesn't make a difference to you as an offense lineman, and it DOES put even a good defense on its heels a little bit.

Holy crap was that a poorly punctuated sentence?!

I've never thought that there was great risk for any team to run the no huddle - line wise. All you really need for it are play makers and a smart QB/C combo.

Smart QB: Edwards - Stanford - check

Smart C: Hangartner - 47 on the wonderlic - check

Play makers: Evans, Owens, Lynch, Jackson, on third downs Reed - check

  10. As another poster pointed out, he was the architect of the Carolina team which made the NFC Championship Game in their second season.

There's several rumors floating around as to why Polian was fired and perhaps Lori, or someone who knows better could shed light on this. I had heard two other rumors:

    1) He insulted Ralph's late daughter, Linda Bogdan by hurling a sexist epithet at her.

    2) He threatened to kick Jeff Littman's ass (The Bills' Treasurer).

From Wiki: "On February 4, 1993, after the Bills had appeared in their 3rd straight Super Bowl, Bill Polian was fired as general manager. Polian wasn't fired because he wasn't doing a good job, he was fired because he didn't get along with treasurer, Jeff Littmann, for reasons unknown to all except those close to owner Ralph Wilson, Littmann and Polian himself.

In his closing press conference, Bill Polian said of the team that he built, "They're a very special group of men. Cherish them, you will not see their like again."

San Jose, I have nothing more concrete here. I just always heard that he was generally unruly with the staff, creaming at them rudely, and such.

Edit: a better word might be abrasive.

  11. How can we EVER talk about adding any other running back before Cookie Gilchrist?

    First, love Bobby J.

    Second, damn, you're right.

Third, I think Cookie wants to be paid to be involved.

Fourth, I think this, among other reasons, is why Ralph won't allow it.

However, I could (and hopefully) be wrong.

  12. I posted the receptions stats to show you were wrong--when someone says they are "quite certain" of something but are in fact incorrect, it's good to set the record staraight. I posted the remaining stats to show how much better TT was than Cribbs, since that is the topic this thread seems to be discussing.

There's a reason his moves are the 5th day of Christmas. For a short window, Cribbs was a very good RB.

    Very fair points, JA.

On a side note, I really do wonder sometimes what may have happened if Cribbs had stuck around in Buffalo from 80-88.

Seriously, I don't know. Could he have been at least "great" or would he have petered out by 85-86? It's a shame we (and he) never got a chance to find out.

  13. Your "quite sure" feeling would be dead wrong. Thurman had 60 and 62 reception seasons in his first 4 years...and a 49.

In those same 4 years (including his first part-time year), TT had 39 TDs, and 6800 yards from scrimmage.

So even in his first 4 years, Cribbs...as good as he was in that stretch...was not as good as TT in any category. After those 4 years of course, TT was a top back for another 4 years.

I'm sorry, at one point did I say take Thurm off the wall and put Cribbs up there?

I was wrong on the stat, yes, but your other stuff is pretty much minutia for a comparison I wasn't referencing...nice job, though, seriously, cause that is good information in showing how great Thurm was, and very worthy of the Wall and the Hall.

I said I don't think he will go on the wall, but, in the middle years of this franchise's 50 year history he was a very special back.

  14. Cribbs was more than very good...in my cognizant Bills lifetime (1972-on) I would rank him behind only OJ Simpson, and pretty equal with Thurman.

People who look solely at stats to judge a player aren't getting the whole picture. The way Cribbs was handled in Buffalo (in fact the way the whole squad was handled) by the owner in the early 1980's is a big part of the reason that many who have been around a little longer weren't losing any sleep at the prospect of Mr Wilson not making it to the Hall Of Fame.

Those were the best teams the Bills had since the AFL Championship days, but the owner pretty much alienated everyone involved. People remember Cribbs taking his services to the USFL, but he only did it, after fulfilling his contractal obligation to the Bills (playing his ass off his entire lame duck season), because he could. He was talanted enough to have that option. Guys like Smerlas and Haslett pissed and moaned about their salaries constantly, but people forget that. Cribbs went to the USFL, played three pro football seasons in two, led the USFL in rushing, and then, when the USFL folded, had to return to the Bills, if he wanted to play. He was beat up at that point, but played hard, the limited amount of time he was given the field.

Cribbs was sort of a pre-curser to guys like Thurman, a great combination of speed, strenghth, football intelligence... beyond being a hell of a runner, he was a great receiver too, in an era where pass catching RB's wasn't very common.

Cribbs won't go on the Wall of Fame, because you can't put everyone there, and, because as great as he was, he didn't play long enough for the Bills to belong there...but make no mistake, he was a great running back, not just good...

    Well said, buftex.

I doubt he will go on the Wall, as well, and I was mad at him when he left and the way he left, but if this guy had stayed AND if we had a stable organization during that time he would have given us more great moments and numbers.

Just to breakdown from the link provided early in this thread:

In the 54 games of his REAL career in Buffalo (not after the USFL) from 80-83 Cribbs scored 35 TDs (20 run, 15 pass) and had 5600 plus yards in offense for us - about 105 yards per game (75 run, 30 pass), and caught 162 passes, twice eclipsing the 50 reception mark for a season, which I am quite sure Thurmal didn't even do in his first 4 years.

And, some still believe that there was a lingering question of whether the Bills intentionally limited his use during the last part of a season so as to avoid paying him his performance bonuses; but take that for what it is worth.
