How many more coordinators have to be emasculated by having their play calling duties taken away or lose their jobs before McDermott realizes it’s not a “they problem”, and it’s an “I” problem. Is it Bobby Babich’s fault it’s 2025 and Tre White, Jordan Phillips and Jordan Poyer are either starting or playing significant time? Is it his fault that 9 years into this regime, with all the draft picks and free agents invested on the def line, that they cannot generate a consistent pass rush with the front four? Did he draft Kair Elam, or an undersized middle linebacker, who can’t seem to stay healthy? Did he Overpay B players like their A players like; Rousseau, Oliver, Benford… Is it his fault Matt Milano can’t stay healthy? Is it Bobby Babich’s fault that Damar Hamlin was a starting safety last year and Taylor Rapp this year? Is it his fault that the league has transitioned back to running the ball more and that the Bills old, slow, undersized defense is giving up 5.8 ypc and is still built to stop the pass (which they don’t even do that well)?

There’s no denying he finds good picks in the later rounds like Walker, Benfrod, Milano… The issue is missing with their top picks where you really infuse your team with top tier talent. Benford is great for a 7th round pick, but there’s a reason he fell all the way the 7th round. He was drafted like a C player and has played himself into a B but is getting paid like an A @ 4 years/76 million…overpaying another B player.

Do we forget that Edmunds wasn’t good during his Bills tenure either?. He was drafted to be more of a pass defending mlb with good coverage skills and a long reach. How many times did we watch games over the years, where he was a non factor, whether it be not being able to get off blocks or being a step behind or ahead in the passing lanes? Edmunds wasn’t the answer and neither is Bernard. Again, this is more of a front office issue with not drafting enough top tier talented players.
-
I think another issue is the league is cyclical. A few years ago it was a predominantly passing league so you needed quicker, penetrating d lineman and smaller lb‘s who can cover. when the majority of teams start going pass heavy then the best way to counter that is to go the opposite way and start being more run oriented. Which is the direction we’re seeing the last 2-3 seasons. The bills are way behind on trying to stop teams that can run. The best d lineman is undersized and more suited to rush, which is why you see him disappear for long stretches and games at a time. There is a 220 lb, undersized mlb playing behind him who can’t get off a block. On top of whiffing on top draft picks, they’ve overpaid B players like they’re A’s.
-
I think the bigger issue is this can’t be fixed in one or two off seasons. Whiffing on top draft picks and paying complimentary B players like their A’s sets franchises back for years. when you pay your qb 50+ million a year, you have to hit on your draft picks, because you can’t afford to go into free agency and overspend to make up for whiffing. this has been coming for years. You could see it in the playoffs the last few years. The bills have had the benefit of beating up on a terrible division. Any time they play a good to great qb and wr 1 they get exposed. Any time they play an elite rb they get exposed. This is nothing new.

For a guy who preaches accountability, MCD seems like a guy who is being very slippery and not taking accountability for his defense. “We held them to a field goal on the last drive and had a chance to go win it” sounds an awful lot like a guys defense that gave up 32 points to a team that hadn’t scored 30 all year, and feels like holding KC to a field goal is a win and placing the blame on the offense. Houston held them to 212 total yards the week before. Baltimore shut them out in the second half of the ‘23 afc championship. Cincinnati shut them out in the second half of the ‘21 afc championship, so it can be be done, MCD’s defense just can’t get it it done. Whether it be from a scheme standpoint of lack of top tier talent to get the job done. also, MCD saying Kincaid “needs to put on playing weight” sounds an awful lot like a guy trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. You don’t draft guys who don’t fit your scheme and force them into it. Embrace what the guy is, a slight framed receiving tight end not an in line blocker. If that’s what you wanted, you should have drafted a blocking tight end. it just sounds like an evasive approach to what the real issue is 8 years into this regime. A defense that fails time after time in big games. A coaching staff that fails and seems underprepared and tight in big games. A lack of top tier talent on both sides of the ball surrounding a once in a generation quarterback. first it was Leslie Frazier, then they had the overtime rules changed, then it was Ken Dorsey, now it’s the bad calls by the refs and his defense gave the offense a chance to win the game but it didn’t. He’s ran out of people to blame. edit: let’s not even discuss bringing back Smiley and that god awful special teams unit that seems unprepared every time it steps foot on the field

I’m actually tired of all the excuses. Blame the refs, blame Kincaid torn pcl, blame Josh’s’ broken hand, blame benford going out with concussion… how about we stop making excuses and just realize they weren’t good enough. The coaching staff wasn’t good enough. The players weren’t good enough. yes there were bad calls, play better and don’t leave it in the hands of the refs judgement calls. how about James cook only getting 4 carrries in the first half? How the defense giving up 32 points to a team that hadn’t scored 30 all year? theres plenty of blame to go around. With all that being said, they still got the ball back and 3 timeouts with a chance to go and win the game and they didn’t get it done. now bean is talking to the league about the referees? This is what losers do. Just like he had an overtime rule change because the top 5 defense couldn’t get a stop when it mattered. how many more times do you have to watch this defense and head coach fail in big games? There is more than enough proof over the years that in big moments of big games MCD and the defense come up short. accept you weren’t good enough from a coaching and personnel standpoint 8 years into this regime and there still isn’t a pass rush even after all the draft picks and free agent signings. The run defense is still terrible. There isn’t enough top tier talent on either side of the ball to surround your once in a generation quarterback.

Granted 3/4’s of the secondary was out as well as Milano (who surely wasn’t 100% before being out for todays game) but… The defense has given up chunks of yards all year but not many points. Now they’re giving up chunks of yards and points. If a team truly commits to running the ball against the Bills, they don’t have an answer for it, and it opens up so many other options. When they aren’t getting gashed by the run, they aren’t generating any pass rush, which leaves an already depleted secondary in a really bad spot. Bad teams can’t really expose that. Baltimore did it first. Then Houston, LA, Detroit and now New England. tjis is going to be a problem in the playoffs

okkk now. He was a very big part of Josh‘s growth from in year 3, to where he is now. Let’s not forget Josh was throwing 50 yard bombs to Robert Foster before the Bills traded for Diggs In hindsight, Minnesota won the trade in both the long term and the short term with the drafting of Justin Jefferson

Can’t wait to seen him diving at ankles, laying on his face staring up at someone catching/running for a first down or td. (tyreek hill eats his lunch) then putting his hands on his hips “damn”

The fact that Beane is so confident in saying “full confident Stef is a #1” is unsettling. he was “fully confident” in Gabe being a #2 as well. He seems to be a year behind on his evaluations of declining players. -
Beane & McDermott end of season press conferences

Just like he “firmly believed” that Gabe Davis was a #2 -
Having said all that, the offense still had an opportunity to take the lead with under 2 mins left and they didn’t make enough plays. that’s the real story. They didn’t capitalize on the opportunities that were in front of them, again.

This game is a cataclysm of the last 6 years into one game. the highs, the lows, the still not being able to cover Travis Kelce, the still letting mahommes pirouette around and get a big first down or finding someone open downfield. Tyler bass didn’t lose this game. From the first snap mistakes were made from Diggs fumbling. To the last drive with Diggs dropping a huge pass, Josh fumbling with 5 mins left and then missing Shakir in the back of the end zone. this is another game of missed opportunities. Blame who you want. There’s plenty to go around

Allen makes history again- this is a big 1

Stuck in the mud = Coaching & Lack of Talent

Again I will ask…what do our defensive injuries have to do with the offense having 7 pts total, 54 minutes into 5 out of the last 6 games? What do the injuries on defense have to do with the fact that the offense had 7 pts total with 54 minutes left in 4 of the last 5 games. take away their best game (Miami) and their worst game (pick any of the other 8 games) and that’s what they are. This isn’t just a this season problem. This started to show in the second half of last season. Even when healthy, this defense gets exposed by elite quarterbacks and plays well against average to below average quarterbacks. The roster even when healthy has holes and not enough impactful players that were drafted high. -
think the root of the problem is that the roster isn’t as great as everyone thought it was. Besides Josh Allen and Diggs, defenses don’t have to game plan or fear anyone else. we don’t have any other receiving options (Kincaid may get there) besides Diggs. the zone defense was great for 5 years against average to below average teams. They have drafted high round, non-impactful pass rushers and in turn had to pay 140 million dollars to a 33 year old pass rusher to overcompensate. hyde and poyer are showing their age besides Matt Milano, who do offenses really game plan for?! whenever this zone defense faces elite quarterbacks it gets shredded. This is nothing new and has been exposed over and over and over again. Everyone keeps saying we’re stuck in the mud, I think we’re lacking high end talent

He hit the sound guy 5 yards out of bounds on a dime

Anyone putting this on the defense down 4 starters is insane. They are missing one playmaker at every level blame the offense with 10 pts at the half and scoring 25 or less for the 3rd straight week again the Allen Roller Coaster Experience

It’s not just about Monday nights game. It’s an overall statement about how those 3 aren’t very good
-
All 3 of these guys consistently got pushed around all game. I know the jets d-line will do that to a lot of teams but game after game it seems these 3 don’t generate enough push in the run game, especially dawkins i feel like he gets a pass because he’s a nice guy, but he’s soft. He consistently gets beat by speed rushers because he’s too slow, and he gets overpowered by bull rushers. You can’t fix the o-line in one off season but failing to address it in the draft in years past caught up big time last year and isn’t looking any better 1 game into this year
