  1. Really surprised they straight up released Newton.  Wow...

Guess we won't need to wait to see who Jones is.  What I find puzzling is that they only have Hoyer behind him.

Yes you are right, i don't think they are going to be run, run all the time, hence the two TEs and Cam being release. BB is no way trying to run the same type of offense they did last year. They want their QBs to make throws; back shoulders, outs to backs, the strikes down the middle, similar to how they ran with Brady. Yea by no means do I think the patriots are trying to replicate what they did or what they had with Brady, No that is gone, that was a once in a lifetime phase. This is just about being competitive again.

Dunno, I saw Jones move and throw like Brady from a dirty pocket.... Not fair

No. What saved them was the impression among free agents that if you wanted a ring you signed with the Patriots. Take Brady away and suddenly you have a very weak team. Compare our depth to the Patriots. Then compare our last four drafts to theirs.

Last year they were crushed by a ton of dead money, opt outs, and injuries.  They had to pay up on all the contracts that they had paid out in order to make that 5-6 year run happen, last year was pay up time.

Clearly that team has talent this year and in comparing our depth to theirs it looks favorable for either depending on the position group.  Not sure what you're looking at, could you be specific?  Cheers

They have only drafted and let go three without a second contract in that time though..... Easley, Brown and Michel. It sounds more amazing than the reality.

I'm not sure re-signing a 1st round pick is a sign of anything considering how NE handles its payroll.  That jump in contract from rookie to big veteran money us a sure way to have a few star players with no depth to back them up.  I feel like we did that for many years.

  4. I see Bills bandwagoners all over now.  In Saratoga the bunting changes between Giants - Patriots (that's lots of play off appearances in the last 25 years or so).  Now there's Bills flags, hats, bumper stickers, t-shirts all over the place.  Its a love hate thing,  love to see it, but hate that band wagon phenomenon.

Disagree on Pittsburgh (below .500) and Baltimore (they will win double digit games again - excellent roster, favourable schedule).

Steelers look pretty solid on offense with 2 pass catching TE's, good WR's and a stud rookie at RB.  Looks like they can light it up ,and the D looks to be solid also.  I'm not ruling them out.

  6. NE showed up and more or less played the type of game we've been expecting since their spending spree.  Newton looks improved, Mac Jones looks as advertised also.  I am surprised that they are down 3 out of 4 TE's when that was their biggest upgrade this past offseason.

We expect them to play tough D, try to run on everyone, etc.  Now what I really want to know is can they rely on their kicker (either one) and can they throw the ball to win a game if they have to.  Two big questions that remain.  The Jets aren't going anywhere this season and the Dolphins probably aren't either, so this is a two horse race and we're the fav.  I have slowly growing concern over this NE team though....

I admittedly did not watch the game, but I actually thought that Mac Jones looked meh going through the highlight real. I thought he did a lot of staring down of receivers. Going against the 1's, I think he gets torn apart.

People aren't making fun of the QB as much as they are relishing in the potential struggle of the Pats. The last 20 years have been rough.

Last 20?  We've been struggling with them since 1994.  If not for Jim Kelly's Bills and OJ, this series would be completely one sided:  https://www.footballdb.com/teams/nfl/new-england-patriots/teamvsteam?opp=4

I’ll never trust my lying eyes in preseason after I thought Peterman looked great.

Hard to make judgments on accurate QBs with weak arms, when the talent level and speed isn’t that of a regular season game.

Some can make it work… some can’t.

Jones is Chad Pennington 2.0    He looks like the same exact player, but the major difference may show up in durability.  Pennington was smart but physically limited, though he knew exactly how to play within his limits and was very efficient.  I think that's what Jones is now and will be going forward.

Watching Jones you see how hard he has to throw to get anything on the ball. If Jones had been on any other college team, playing with a different group of players and coach he would have been a 5th rounder.

I really wanted to see Stidham in camp with them just to throw a wrench in the works.  Jones has the noodle arm, Cam's is broke and Stidham has a legit NFL arm but not the leadership intangibles of the other two.  It would have really muddied it up to have a guy in their camp who can sling it and put the other two in context.

  10. Look at the HoF finalists and who is up next year.  NE already has Ty Law in the Hall, finalists were McGinnest, Harrison, Seymour, and Wilfork is eligible next year.

That's 5 probable HoF'rs from their first 3 SBs and 07 Defense.  Then there's Vinatieri in there somewhere too who is likely a 1st ballot HoF'r.

Yes Brady was there for 20 years, but not alone and its not like their offense will only play with 10 now.  Their defense is likely a top 5 defense this season, it was only season before last they were number 1.  So yeah, Brady is gone but they're still dangerous, restocked and reloaded.  Our future is extremely bright because of JA17, but I see too many people walking around with the impression that with Brady gone it's "our turn" to run the division for a decade or better.  Nothing is guaranteed and don't expect the media to crown the Bills as a dynasty tomorrow.

Meh, haters gonna hate. The dominant narrative is that NE rules and Buffalo drools and that last season was an aberration because half their team opted out because of COVID and NE is back this year.

If Buffalo wants to change the narrative it's simple. Do. It. Again. Next year? Simple. Do. It Again. Eventually once the narrative becomes sufficiently divorced from reality, the narrative will change.

Right now IDGAF, makes for great bulletin board material inside the training facility.

    Exactly

Except the Giants and Jets are headquartered in New Jersey.  Meaning that while they have the NYC name, most of their players live and they play all their home games in, and the players and team pay most of their taxes to, New Jersey.

All arguments aside, the fact remains it looks and sounds different to anyone outside WNY and doesn't reflect well.  I've seen the reaction many times.

So being able to see the skyline qualifies as being in the city?

I can see Toronto from parts of Buffalo.. am I Canadian?

They are the NY Giants and Jets, as in representing the city and not the state, no?  Seems their stadium is right in the middle of the NYC metro area.  Go figure

The state and county will pay for at least half .. not the city of buffalo

NYS Taxpayers funded half of Yankee stadium and the Mets stadium

And The Buffalo Bills are the only football team in New York state.. New York state is going to pony a good amount when all is said and done

I know we all say that the Bills are the only team in NY State, but in reality the Giants and Jets play next to their City's skyline, we don't.

I think the question will be how quickly BB can get the team to gel and define their identity.  They're probably going to be a running team, but they don't have the horses to pair it with a really vertical offense unless agholor really thrives there.  They added a lot... but they were also the 27th ranked offense in the league a year ago.  They were probably worse than 7-9, they had no business winning that arizona game and the offense got real stale as teams figured out what they were doing.  The upgrades at WR and TE should help, but they were severely limited at QB and are rolling with the same guy.  If struggles continue they have Jones, and can develop more of a play action oriented attack that should takes some pressure off of him and use that spark to win a couple.

Defensively they added some pass rush with van noy and Judon - get hightower back.  It's a solid group.  Hesitate to say "top 10" with the defensive line rotation though - its not a strong group.  Secondary is old but there is some young depth.  Buffalo's first game was set up for NE to win with it being cold and windy, and honestly NE probably should have won.  2nd game they didn't have gilmore, and I know that hurt - but they were shredded.  They are going to struggle with Buffalo's WR group, and you can't just leave gilmore on diggs and expect to have success.

I see NE as a 10-7, 11-6 team?  Maybe enough to win the division?  Should be playoff bound and a tough out though.

Thats pretty much what I came away with from all the different sources on the net.  I think in game one last year they put JC Jackson on Diggs with Safety help,  Gilmore covered someone else.  I could see them doing that again and now they have a much better front seven to contend with.  According to Youtube videos from NE's camp, Newton is healthy and looking much better than last year.  I'll believe that when he can do it week in week out in the regular season.  So... pending that doubtful reality coming to pass, 🙄 on "improvement".

Again appreciate the discussion.  I think I can stay objective after having watched our performance.  If anything its the Pats performance I would lack perspective on.  I think it boils down to imo the Pats seems to be getting a lot of projection this year.

#2 OL is pretty great example of this.  They are essentially saying Trent Brown > Joe Thuney right?  Unless, (and the data probably does say this) they thought they were the #1 OL last year (that would be laughable).  I do feel its pretty objective to say we are better at off ball LB and the secondaries are very similar (thats not even talking about Gilmore).  DL is probably the spot with the most variance for each team (I think you would agree with this).  Even if I concede OL, this is pretty far off from "they are better at every other positional group."

I dont know what FO is doing but they strongly think we had the better line last year

    https://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/nfl/basic-offensive-defensive-line-stats/2020/offense

Everything I found on the net more or less corroborates the idea that they are better or at least equal at every position group outside QB and WR, its in the links I posted.  Does that make it true?  Dunno... The regular season will tell us the truth,  I just think its notable and worth looking at.

Bottom line here is that the OP is true "NE QB's suck", because if they had Brady with their current roster we'd likely be underdogs this year.

He's long gone and we win a tough division this year, which I find much more interesting and more satisfying personally.  Makes us a tougher team in the playoffs.
