Really very interesting interview that focused more about the QB position than individual players. I found it very insightful.

He did mention Josh a few times including:

Future of the QBs .. "being able to create time and space" - moving, making people miss like Mahomes, Josh Allen, Russell Wilson

It was interesting that he did not mention Sam Darnold.

Doc Brown has hit on something .. I think this tweet could mean lots of things: The marriage thing or he could be thinking on of the below or other thoughts

    1) That corona virus thing ... It's about to get real in a couple of weeks.

    2) Clemson basketball .. on the outside looking in but ... It's about to get real in a couple of weeks.

    3) XFL season winding down ... ... It's about to get real in a couple of weeks.

    4) I have a fecal impaction ... It's about to get real in a couple of weeks.

    5) I set up my TwoBillsDrive account a few months ago .. and can soon start to post my own threads ... It's about to get real in a couple of weeks.

Yeah, that's it, lets draft the kid of someone who played here!

Just as dumb as wanting every former player who has left here, back!

    oy vey!

You don't draft him because he is a kid of someone who played here. You draft him if you feel he has the on field talent and the off field mindset to make your team better. On field it appears based on his time in Minnesota and the combine results .. he has. Off the field field  it sounds like he is similar to his dad .. that would be a great thing. I am not meeting with him and am not qualified to judge either of these things, but if he is like his dad .. yes I would be very interested.

Not drafting a player just because they are the son of someone who played here is just as dumb as not wanting to look at former players who did well with us because they left. oy vey!

I see it has a recent date, but I'm pretty sure essentially this data was discussed about a month ago, perhaps based upon an earlier version of the article?

Or perhaps I'm confusing it with his loop back to assess his year 1 to year 2 model, which you can find here

My biggest thing is I wish the author would give us his basis set of 27 players.  I would also like to understand how he handled a QB such as Pat Mahomes, who sat his entire rookie season and was MVP the first season he started (his 2nd year).  I went back to his original article and he doesn't give much in the way of details.

For perspective on why that's important, there were actually 117 QB drafted between 2008 and 2017.   If one looks only at QB who threw at least 150 passes (50 passes x 3 years), that's still 61 QB.  Now he qualifies 50 passes/year "in the first 3 years of their career" and whittles down to 27, but since even a kind of meh starting QB can easily throw 50 passes in 1 or 2 games, it seems to me that he may be including a bunch of mediocre, and unsuccessful QB.

I'd just like to better understand what he's doing.

Statistics almost always mean something, but if the right comparison group isn't chosen, predictive models may or may not mean what one likes.

Yes .. I posted the year 1 vs year 2 article which in general josh met or exceeded the expectations. I think the point made above by @folz does give one hope that Josh can be a positive outlier. The dude just wants to be great! I think in the end it is just another data point that can help guide expectations.

But there are other factors with this.  Watkins gets picked up by some of the best offensive teams because he is a threat.  Dareus got traded for by a team that almost made the SB.  They are now older and not worth what they were.  But this happens all the team.

for instance, some of the young players on our roster will be given a second deal that would make them way more expensive than they are now.  For instance, take Dawkins.  He will get a really big payday that years from now he will be either asked to re structure or he will be moved. It’s the way of the nfl when guys make good Money.

I agree that they were worth more when we traded them than they are now, but we were not ready to compete back then so it was sound strategy to trade them away and get resources that would help us once we turned the corner.  The Patriots sell high approach to staying competitive over the long haul

Watkins was the leading receiver in the playoffs for a team that just won the SB.

Yes .. in the playoffs, but as stated he is on his second team. In the regular season he only had 673 yards which is 100 yards less than Cole Beasley as an example and the Chiefs have made it clear that while they would like to keep him it will not be at his current salary.

  7. Glenn, Watkins, Dareus, Tyrod - all big name guys here in Buffalo back when they were traded .. and each on there second team or soon to be with reduced pay along the way. Of them, I wouldn't mind getting Tyrod (as a backup) back at some point and Glenn was always a stand-up guy .. due to injuries he would need to be cheap. Overall it looks like the Bills FO made the right call on these players.

It’s the offseason and it’s been slow on the NFL front, so a few weeks ago, I started watching the Bills-Oilers playoff game from 1993.

I was floored at how awesome Houston looked in the first half.  Moon was absolutely slinging it, and it appeared that the Bills DL couldn’t get anywhere near him.  The Houston receivers were consistently winning matchups vs the Buffalo secondary.  Basically it just looked TOO easy.  Almost like some of the 2007 Bills defense trying to defend Tom Brady and Randy Moss.

Here’s what I want to ask, because I couldn’t quite tell.  From a schematic approach, what changed in the Oilers offense or with the Bills defense that allows the Houston offense to generate just 3 points in the second half?

Also, it seems criminal that Moon and this offense never got a chance to player in a Super Bowl.  They were a wicked talented offense with great talent at skills positions:

    WR: Jeffries, Givens, Slaughter, Duncan

RB: Lorenzo White and Gary Brown.

I forgot that in the following season, the team was in disarray coming off the playoff loss to the Bills but then rattled off 11 straight wins.  The 93 team was even better and a legit SB contender, but they eventually were upset by Broadway Joe Montana.

    Still...man what a team.

I remember one of the Bills defenders .. I think it was Talley say they had gone the first half with extra DBs but in the second half they went with a more traditional defense. The oilers already had a history of choking so after we scored got the onside kick and scored again .. the offense started tightening up

  9. I would likely feel excited .. because we would have a new coach and be drafting a new QB as we would have been horrible and McDermott would I imagine have been fired. I was always excited when we started over because there was a chance. I would also be kicking myself because we missed out on Mahommes, and Watson, and that Josh Allen kid, but I would be hoping that our new QB would be able to finally change all of that.

So ... happy we went against the crowd and chose Allen over Rosen.

  10. There will be others that can be had as well .. Interesting article by CBSSports documenting some of the worst positioned teams and the sacrifices they may need to make. This is why you do not overspend on any one player as you quickly get into an uncomfortable cap position.

This young man is so exciting to watch  :)

I don't want to wish my life away but hurry up and get here September  :)

Was talking to a Jets fan yesterday ... and he was raving not so much about how well Josh plays but rather how he plays .. all out all the time. He wants to see more of Josh on ?

So very true. We don't have the time or luxury to wait 2-3 years for a young wr to develop.  We have to strike now over these next 3-4 years before big contracts come up. Trade for Diggs, sign Hunter Henry to compliment Knox and draft Tee Higgins or Reagor to learn. Our offense would explode.

I imagine this is overblown. We have been in rebuilding mode and in the early stages of rebuilding with young talent you do not spend a ton on older players. Layer a few in to help the younger players adapt. As we are now in the win it mode I think he might look for some selective big ticket purchases that help put us over the top (e.g., Antonio Brown). I personally am not a big fan of paying top dollar for others players, but this does not strike me as top dollar and he definitely would fit a need so I am in favor (not that Beane and McDermott give a flying fig what I think - nor should they).

You dont get comp picks when you have 90 million to spend in free agency.  If you franchise tag him then extend players you might get a comp pick for him when he leaves a year from now.

Well you may be right .. but it really depends on how much of the 90 mil they spend on resigning their guys and how much they spend on other people’s FA

  14. Something that jut occurred to me as I was looking at the patriots draft picks .. if we can sign him to a reasonable deal great .. but if the price gets too high .. we will end up with a nice compensatory draft pick. The smart teams have been taking advantage of this system for years. Let a guy walk for high money .. don't pay the money and get a draft pick on a cheap contract for  nothing. The not so smart teams overpay and get into cap hell .. looking at you Rams. let's be a smart team.
