  1. Is it WFT or WTF? Why would anybody take in that contract, much less actually give up picks for him?  Heineke was legitimately better than him last year and you had him for Pennies.  I would have understood signing Winston, Mariota, Trubiski etc, but why would you TRADE PICKS to pay Wentz 28M?

  2. I agree, they don’t need a #2, they need a physical #1B.  Diggs is a great possession receiver, but he’s not physically take anybody out.  It makes it a lot harder to win in the red zone with that.  Get the guy with size that can cause a problem all the way down the field.

I think Davis is coming on, but if he is good enough to compete for the job, you have a great problem.

I'd argue that piking up the 5th year option occurs for 2 main reasons...

    1. You value the player and want them back. Plan for a 2nd contract.

    2. You're uncertain and/or have an issue at the position. Basically a stopgap.

I think #1 is Oliver and #2 is Edmunds. Edmunds is good at some things, but I suspect they would have brought in someone else there if they had the resources. The pandemic and subsequent salary cap drop really boned the Bills on the timing. Picking up Edmunds at that point was the best solution to keep the position at at least it's past skill level and allow Beane to focus dollars elsewhere to keep most of the team together or make improvements.

It was really a masterstroke by Beane to keep as much of the team together in the circumstances. I suspect we'll see resources spent at LB this offseason where he has a bit more breathing room (even if they keep Edmunds).

To keep this on Oliver though, I believe they value him and want to give him a 2nd contract.

There was no reason to pick up Edmunds, worst case they had a tag option, now you are stuck w a fully guaranteed contract for about 6M more than he’s worth.  Could have transitioned him for marginally more.  It was a bad move, anything else is just trying to justify a bad move.  Beane is not perfect, contrary to what a lot of homers believe.

  4. Honestly, doesn’t seem like enough compensation for the Hawks to me.  I guess if they manage to flip one of the firsts this year for 2 next year and get loaded up, it might work out. Going to have to go full rebuild there anyway.  Might as well flip what’s left for more picks.

  5. I wouldn’t pay either of them that.  Stafford was not great this year, yet he got it done.  He’s a fringe top 10 guy, right there with Cousins.  So I get why people would be interested in having a guy like that to get them over the hump, but you have to have a helluva team to be “just a QB away”.   I don’t know if the Rams really have a choice, they gave up the farm to get him, that would be too much to have him there for a short time, even if he did get the ring.  I don’t think anybody that needs a QB would be considered instant contenders with Cousins.

The only situation where I see a team that’s just a QB away from being a serious contender is Indy.  Cousins would be a great fit for them and in theory, they could make his demands work.. kinda hope they don’t haha.

Yes I do understand he had a great Sr Year at UMass.  But that was 4 years ago and against college (most of which were non big 5) level opponents.

I simply noted his pro stats.  It appears that his limited catch radius, inability to get off press coverage and poor hands may have finally caught up to him.  His college success has not translated to the pros.

Lil Dirty as a Bill  has 3 times more catches, a higher catch rate and 10 Total TDs compared to Isabella's 3 in the last 3 years  And Lil Dirty provides options as a runner and returner that Isabella doesn't.  IMHO I would pass on trading for or signing Isabella  and just re-sign Lil Dirty and draft another speedy receiver.

Well you specifically said he wasn’t noticeable at UMass.  I don’t see trading a late round pick for him as a change in any plans at all.  If he works out, cool, if not he’s gone after training camp.  They took a flier on another 1st round bust and paid him 3M for training camp, this would be less cost and who knows what you get.  I agree, I like lil Dirty, but does he want to deal with McClappy’s bull####? I don’t think so.

Then why not draft a WR for potential? A guy that has one year remaining on his contract doesn't have a lot of value. Draft that speed guy and have him for 4 years.

Not often you get a chance at 2nd round potential for a 6th round pick.  Not saying I wouldn’t take a flier pick, but this is a highly productive college player, who for whatever reason hasn’t worked out.  Maybe it’s been a matter of a bad fit, or maybe he sucks, I’d be willing to take a shot.

    Easy no for me

    Arm length < 30"

    Hand size < 8.375"

    Catch rate <65%

Only 3 games with >3 catches in 17 appearances

No ST role.  Never did anything noticeable here in AZ or at UMass

    Body catcher

No rushing acumen in pro ball.

Umm he had a terrifically productive college career, over 100 catches and 1600 yards in his senior season alone.

  8. I would bet somebody is going to slap down about 15M, it’s not a great QB market, and a lot of teams need one.  For all the money guys like Bridgewater etc have gotten, I would think a guy who looked pretty good in Chi for a few years and the mess Chi proved they created last year along with him looking good in preseason and an expert at kneel downs, he should get a decent deal.

My counter-point is that punt length isn't the only trait you're looking for in great punters.

Both Haack and Bojo were terrible at "coffin corner" punting.

When you pin an offense inside their 1-3 yard line, that's usually an immediate stop and good field position for your team.

It's way more important than the net 4 yards you mentioned. Bojo and Haack would almost always sail it into the end zone.

The funny part is that was supposed to be Haack’s specialty.   Overall, he just had a terrible year, I don’t know if it was just a down year or if he sucks in general.

I'm sure I'll be in the minority here, but I actually agree with this logic.

Matt "Punt God" Araiza would be as close to a sure thing as you could get.

Araiza is also a pretty good place kicker, so there's your backup to Bass in case of injury as well.

The top 3 punters in the league make almost $4M/yr and their teams never let them go. They are game changers.

Using a 4th would sting a bit, but I'd do it. He likely won't be around in the 5th-7th.

I see your point on the salary of a punter, but even still, I’d look later in the draft if at all.  Traditionally, punters get drafted very late, if at all.  To my earlier point, I don’t think the difference is there to use a pick on one.  Bojo was a good punter for no investment, his holding sucked bad enough to cost him his job.  Haack is the opposite.  On the overall Bojo averaged about 4yards better than Haack and aside from the SLOW kick that cost the Pitt game, it really didn’t matter all year.

  11. The difference between the very best punter and the worst in the NFL is a whole 8 yards on average.  A team punts on average about 4 times a game, the Bills punted on average 3.05 times a game last year.  How much is 25 yards a game worth to you? (Assuming you get the very best guy and Buffalo winds don’t skew their stats back to the middle of the pack where it’s more like a 4 yard a kick difference). BTW the difference between the best punter and worst when looking at Net is only 7 yards and the best average distance punter is not the best Net.

A great punter is a nice thing to have, but the amount of times that 4-8 yards makes a big difference is rare.  The Bills could/should upgrade as Haack is one of the worst in the league no matter how you shape it, but to talk about a 3rd round pick is nuts.

There will be a few speed options if he's serious. Isabella likely would be the least expensive option. DJ Chark and John Ross are both options, however both would be a tad costly and have some injury concerns.

I fully expect a true blazing WR to be brought in.

Chark would be awesome, but I expect him to get a pretty fat paycheck too.

Mission Accomplished, Walter Football. Six pages of Bills fans clicks.

Next mock: "Bills need to draft a 3rd round QB because Josh Allen's play is not sustainable."

It’s a win for them, take the most polarizing play and zing him, clicks are coming.

I agree the Bills better have a decent back up QB, won’t be through the draft tho.
