I'll say this about him - I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone improve year-to-year like him, and this goes back to college. I remember him getting benched for Tua vs Georgia, and I thought, put him out of his misery -- the man can't throw and also has an incredibly slow release. No chance at the next level. Props to him for always improving year to year. I think he's plateaued, but that plateau is pretty elevated.

I thought he was undraftable coming out, after his first year playing, I was still sure I was spot on.  Then he broke out like Allen did.  He’s playing great football.

It's basically the same thing we had going on before McDermott took over. The defense is great spread out over the average. The problem is when you need a great defense to make a stand you don't have it. Part of that is we don't have a Bruce Smith, we no longer have a healthy Von Miller. The other part of that is the coaching philosophy that falls apart when you need it the most.

The entire problem with a scheme like this, you can hide mediocre talent with it, waiting on the other team to screw up.  However, you sell your soul to stop either the run or the pass in big moments UNLESS you have elite talent, that leaves you susceptible to getting crushed in big moments.  The reason Tony Dungy got fired in Tampa was the same issue, bend, don’t break, only works if you have room to bend.     McD will get fired is just that, it doesn’t work when you can’t bend.

  3. If they lose to KC, just mail it in, you aren’t getting in the playoffs, it’s also proof you can’t  beat the best (in their own version of a down year)so just plan for the draft.  That said, regardless of what makes sense, they will play to win for the rest of the year and put themselves 2 or 3 draft slots away from the guy they really want/need for the 50th time.  Or even better, trade the slot that takes potentially the GOAT at their respective positions for the 3rd time in 7 years.

Who available? Guys will take an NFL HC gig with Josh. That’s the point. You don’t have to get a guy who’s already an HC or one with experience…

You try. If it doesn’t work, you move on and cut your losses. It’s been that way for years. Still is.

Oh I agree, I think the Bills job is the most desirable in the NFL, possibly 2nd to the Chargers in some people’s view if they are both available this year.  The Chargers have SO MUCH talent on that roster, they really should be much better than they are, but the Bills have Josh Allen and the ability to clear a lot of cap room after next year, so that’s another good spot.   Guys will jump on it for sure.

He has no idea.  And keep in mind, this is the same owner who hired and fired a number of coaches and GM’s en route to a playoff drought that’s closing in on the Bills 17 years of futility.

I’ve asked countless fans who should replace McDermott.  They have absolutely no clue.  Here are the responses:

    - Ben Johnson

    - Let Brandon Beane make the hire

    🤣

How can anyone answer the question without knowing who will be available?  Harbaugh may or may not be available to the NFL, Bellicheck may or may not be on the market, Ben Johnson may or may not be on the market, etc.   There are multiple candidates, but without knowing who is actually available, one can’t answer the question.   I think the obvious thing about it all, McDermott is not a guy that many believe can get the job done.

Wrong again.  But I guess because you say so, it makes it correct?

    https://www.buffalobills.com/news/bills-announce-contract-extensions-gm-brandon-beane-hc-sean-mcdermott-2027#

Exactly what part am I wrong about?  Beane came in after McD, Whaley did the drafting and was promptly fired.   They didn’t come together.  So YOU are wrong.   Yes, they signed extensions at the same time, as I stated.  You have drawn a connection to them in your head that doesn’t exist.

What he does do is run a system then customized personnel to it over years.

Bernard isn’t a starting MLB in a lot of NFl defenses and neither are Benford or Dane.

recall Poyer and Hyde were not starters early in their career.

also all the cap tied up in the front 4 positions isn’t necessarily compatible with numerous schemes either.

you don’t just switch schemes with the same dudes and everything is perfect…. That’s not how this all works.

So you think McD just makes guys come to life?   C‘Mon man.  Benford looks like a starter on most teams, Bernard looks like a top 5 cover MLB and you think he can’t play elsewhere? Why is it that he looks better than Edmunds ever did?  Was McD too crappy to get more from the better athlete or is it that Bernard is just a good player?  Poyer did find much more success in Buffalo, but Hyde was an emerging player in GB who was forcing his way on the field, they just didn’t have a spot for him.  I don’t give much to McD on that, Hyde just needed a spot to play and finally got it here.   Dane Jackson is a depth corner who never should have been starting here either.  The zone scheme takes a lot off of corners and that’s how he even has a chance to play, it’s not rocket science here.

100% it’s always been a collaborative effort between Beane and McDermott.  They were linked together contractually.  If Beane throws McDermott under the bus, he’s essentially throwing himself under too.

That’s why I think in the end, both stay for one more season to try to turn things around.  But we’ll see

I didn’t like that move either, but what we want and what will actually happen are two different things

They are NOT linked contractually in any way, they came in at different times ( royal screw up by ownership) and got extended at the same time, theres nothing more than that.   You have this false link created in your mind bc they came from the same team that they are forever linked.

Not really…it’s based on logic and past history.  Apparently you think Beane is going to throw McDermott under the bus…makes sense!

That’s another reason why I believe there would be loyalty there.

Fans are so hell bent on McDermott getting fired they don’t want to face reality

Beane doesn’t have to throw him under the bus, MCD doesn’t report to him.  You think Beane is going to quit to support his buddy and give up his own contract?  Good luck with that.

It too late…Beane and McDermott are already tied to each other.  They re-signed contract that expire at the same time.  Plus, if you are going to consider a fireable offense, Beane owns some of that with his roster management.

It’s not in his DNA to turn on McDermott.  I guarantee he is going to go to bat for Sean

I think you make a lot of assumptions, based on absolutely nothing.

You asked if he would immediately land another job. The answer is yes lol

Let them have him, it’s a great situation, they need to create a culture, he can do that.  Once he raises them to above mediocre they can fire him too.

As for Beane, I would not have an issue if he were to stay as GM. I think that he has done a good job for the most part.

I do wonder if Beane is more loyal to McD as opposed to the Buffalo Bills. We shall see.

Why would Beane be loyal to McD?  Tying yourself to him is a dangerous game.

No way you trade draft capital for a HC. Why not use that same picks to move up in the draft and get something of use… We definitely need another WR but Safety isn’t looking too hot either moving forward.

Unless you’re trading for Andy Reid, save your picks.

Yeah that ***** didn’t work out for the Patriots.

Who are these top coaches that will be available you’re talking about? If mean the Bills will be an attractive destination for a top coaching CANDIDATE (i.e. Johnson or Slowik), then I agree. But I don’t think it’s likely a young rookie HC is gonna hit the ground running no matter where they end up.

If Harbaugh comes back, he’s the highest winning percentage HC in NFL history the day he signs.

Likely no one else on the team hauls in that sliding touchdown catch. He’s a top tier wide receiver and that cannot be argued. What’s your point? He’s overpaid? Not really, there are total hacks making 75 percent of what he makes. Maybe if the Bills go full rebuild, they trade him.

That wasn’t a special catch by NFL standards.  He’s still a #1, but he’s no longer a difference maker.  He’s not breaking teams back, if anything he’s been dropping passes that break the Bills.   He may be a stay Queen, but that’s more indicative of the lack of talent around him.  That’s no excuse either, he’s produced BIG with the same guys or equivalent around him since he’s been here, he’s just dropping off.

34 minutes ago, Ya Digg? said:

Even so, him not “trying any more” is still better than anything else the Bills have and better than like 80-85% of the receivers in the league

I understand the frustration that everyone has, I have it to, but to want to drive the best player on the team out of Buffalo is crazy

It’s not crazy when he’s no longer a difference maker.  You can’t be just “better than everyone else on the ***** team” and make 20+ against the cap.

  14. It’s pretty clear, there are a lot of teams with FAR better talent than the Bills have and still have better cap situations.  A couple of them even have QBs in the same conversation as Allen, so what’s the excuse?   He’s made a lot of ***** FA signings and his continued lack of difference makers in the draft have lead to spending large on FA guys who are taking up a lot of cap and not producing much.

here’s the thing, you can’t take Josh Allen away from him, but if you did evaluate this team vs any other team with a QB who’s has been paid, where would you rank the talent level?  Id argue, it’s not near the top of those teams.  So is he doing a great job?  My answer is no.  You are your decision.

These statements baffle me - “get what you can” NO YOU DON’T GET WHAT YOU CAN FOR A CLEAR WR1

if a team puts together an impressive offer then sure you entertain it, but you’re not trading him for just anything. I’m assuming you want to get rid of McDermott as well (which is fine) but you presumably want your new coach to start his time in Buffalo with no viable weapons at the WR position?

Yeah, I want viable weapons and Diggs looks like he’s either 1) not trying anymore 2) washed after the first half of the season.  Either way, I’ll let go before I’m burned rather than hope a 30 yr old WR is going to turn over a new leaf.

Could have fooled me as whole. The whole defense got one QB hit and it wasn’t like they were all quick hitters like the final drive in OT.

Groots best plays came against the run where he engaged, held up his matchup, disengaged and made the play.

Got shredded in the passing game as a whole in the final 29 minutes of game time…

You give any decent pass rush one on ones against a backup lineman who’s been spotty in his fill in time during his career and there’s usually some advantageous moments. Not many came from that side of the field is all I’m saying…

Literally THE FIRST play of the game, the second play was influenced as was the third.

There’s a good chance his replacement will be worse, especially in their first year, but that’s a risk you have to take. It’s painfully obvious McD is not going to lead this team to a Lombardi.

Stop.  This team is in a position of absolute power to hire a top coach.  Go ahead, point to a better situation; a solid D, top 5 QB, and a semi competent GM, with an owner who will spend, I’ll wait.

Maybe because the spy role they’ve had him do on the two Wilson’s wasn’t exactly that great… Hurts is a different level of runner.

Posted this in the game day thread that how they got pretty much zero pressure from that left end position against a backup rotational lineman is baffling more to me than anything else on defense.

I think your premise is false, the only one who didn’t DOMINATE their RT was Von, who needs to sit the F down.  Groot single handely  destroyed a drive, and 56 looked like LY out there, then they roll out Von who let’s a DT off his couch for 2 weeks out hustle him to the QB on the sidelines, he looks like Chit, let’s just call it what it is and make him inactive.
