So much unsourced stuff being said about Diggs it's hard to know what to believe.  This is from Jason Whitlock, for what it's worth:

“I said it a month or two ago, Stefon Diggs does not want to be in Buffalo. It’s cold up there, his brother plays in Dallas, he wants to be in a better city than Buffalo, and he’s painting this picture ‘OUR SUPER BOWL WINDOW IS CLOSING! JOSH ALLEN NEEDS TO DO THIS!’ He’s painting a picture for him to get out of Buffalo and to get to a city with better strip clubs. I said it a month ago and I’ll say it again—this is about strip clubs, it ain’t about championships. He doesn't care about being a pro, he doesn’t care about winning a championship, he wants to be in a better city. Go look at the teams in that division. Miami Dolphins; he would rather be in Miami. The New England Patriots; he’d rather be in Boston. The New York Jets; he’d rather be in NYC. He’s stuck up in Buffalo, it’s cold there, and I’m just telling you what I know and what I believe—with these young guys and all this discretionary income, and his brother in the NFL, he wants to be in a city where it’s easier to pop bottles, he wants to be somewhere where it’s easier to fly in the Instagram models and that’s what this is about. This has nothing to do with winning, this has nothing to do with dissatisfaction of Josh Allen. He’s going to put all the pressure on Josh Allen and the media is going to eat it up because Josh Allen doesn’t have the complexion for the connection. It’s unfair what Stefon Diggs is about to do to Josh Allen."

if you need Google, then it doesnt work.  A nickname should not really be a trivia question.  It should not challenge you to figure it out.

99.9 % of people should instantly think "oh.  . . . of course."

or to put it another way, on draft night when you heard the name of our draft pick, i guarantee an image of Swazye popped into your mind.  T'hats the moment when it was done.  No extra steps needed like mentioning Roadhouse, to make sure people 'get it.'  A good nickname should not make you think "oh, that's clever."  It should make you think "oh.  naturally."

we all got it.  as soon as that face appeared in our minds.

    --------

(but i fear i'm just, at this point, arguing to be 'right.'   There is no 'right' in this situation.  a nickname will either stick to him or it wont)

If you need google to connect “dalton” with “cooler” then you probably need google to connect “dalton” with roadhouse. 🤷‍♂️

    Swayze

(but for the record, a nickname has to be organic.   Like "Peanut" or "Pork Chop" or "Boogie" or "The Fridge."  That's why you can never give yourself one.  Like nobody ever thought to call you that until that one moment.  And then it was just perfect.  Now i cant not call you that.  And i'll probably forget your real name, soon.)

If you’re gonna go that route it’s gotta be better and play off the roadhouse riff. If he can calm Allen, grab those 1st down conversations in pressure situations then you gotta drop Swayze and go with “The Cooler”.

People see that high draft pick and think well he’s a player. He was never that good.
The Jets other than Wilson have quite a few questions on offense now.
Alan Lazard as the number 2 kinda makes me chuckle for all the flack Gabe takes he’s light years better at number 2 than Lazard is.

While I don’t think Lazard is what you want as your secondary receiving option, he has a viable skill set which Rodgers can exploit especially when plays break down. He’s also one of the best blockers at the position which could lead to some big plays on the ground. Packers are going to miss him walking off defenders in the screen game and downfield on runs.

Yea his value is the entire package.

Can you find a better pure fullback? Yes

Can you find a better move / H-Back type? Yes

Can you find a better blocking tight end option? Yes

Can you find a better, versatile special teamer? Harder, but I am sure you could.

Can you find all of that in a single player? That is the one where I answer no.

Exactly. Adding say a Lee Smith type and Taiwan Jones/Tyler Matakevich type to reliably cover the gaps would cost 2-3 times the amount. Top specialist cost real cap space, having a guy who can cover multiple roles for one of those contracts helps retain guys like Poyer.

He 100% does not define expendable. He does 3 jobs for them. I am not guaranteeing he makes it at his current deal because he is at $666k dead money and not subject to waivers so a potential candidate for the old "cut and wait in the car park while we make other roster moves and then bring you back" tactic that Beane has used multiple times.

But he will 100% make this roster.

He is good. You are wrong. Oh and he played 50 snaps at TE in 2022. 81 as a fullback. 37 in the slot. 19 split wide. They have actually used him HEAVILY in the last two regular season victories over the Chiefs because they really struggle to work out what personnel to come out in when Gilliam moves all over the place. Most fans totally undervalue what he offers.

I think the issue is that folks view him as solely a fullback when his utilization and skill set is more closely aligned with an H-back. Gilliam’s categorization is one of the reasons why everyone views the bills as not using much 12 personnel last season, but Gilliam was used as the second TE. That’ll certainly change with Kincaid, but they still need a guy who can fill that role as a backup and play teams. Folks have their minds made up though because he’s “a fullback,” so 🤷‍♂️

I think Ruben Brown was above average but certainly not elite as his 9 Pro Bowl appearances would suggest.

Ruben's high draft status (14th overall) for a Guard got him the annual Pro Bowl nomination rather than his play.

Do you think Ruben belongs in the Hall of Fame?

I don’t care about the pro-bowls, but Browns four second team all-pro seasons carry some weight.

Pro Bowl is more a popularity contest than an indicator of ability. For example, Ray Nitschke had seven all pro seasons despite only making one pro bowl. They need to just kill the pro bowl and walk away from the abomination

You might think that.    But your opinion is not supported in recent history.

Chiefs (Juju...25th in NFL in receiving yards and very high catch rate....and Kelce)  vs Eagles (AJ Brown and Devonta Smith)

Rams (Kupp and Beckham) vs Bengals (Chase and Higgins)

Bucs (Evans and Godwin)  vs Chiefs (Hill and Kelce)

Chiefs(Hill and Kelce)  vs Niners (Kittle and Samuel)

Patriots (Edelman and Gronk) vs (Woods and Cooks)

Eagles (exception) vs Patriots (Gronk and Cooks)

Basically you gotta' go back 6 seasons to find one team that was the exception to having two WR1 talents and still reaching the Super Bowl.   It's become a necessity.   So the plan for the Bills has to be to develop that other guy(Kincaid hopefully) or be that increasingly rare exception.

Because there isn't a world where Gabe Davis is a comp to any of those players listed.    Only an illogical homer would imply that he is.   And to your alternative scenario.......some of those teams ALSO had an abundance of other good receivers as well......like the 2018 Patriots who first option kinda' studs but had 5 players over 700 yards receiving.

We’re not seeing eye to eye… I wasn’t including TEs in the “two WR 1” category, nor do I view some of those players (JuJu for example) as WR 1s. Adding a top TE into the equation as the #1 pass catching option along with a WR1 is a viable alternative to having two WR1’s which I listed as an example because of Gronk, Kelsey, Kittle, etc. It’s more about having 3+ players that can exploit defenses and game plans or 2 guys who can dominate along with a good rushing attack. We saw what happened to this offense without that third player (prime Beasley), so fingers crossed on Kincaid.

I also don’t believe Davis is a comp to anyone on there. He’s much more like MVS on that Chiefs team, or to stick with another former packer; Lazard…. Firmly entrenched as a secondary option due to limitations. As a result, Diggs & Davis won’t be enough unless a third receiving option steps up big time or the running attack improves dramatically and becomes dominant.

Yeah the problem with @Buffalo_Stampede quote is that Gabe Davis is clearly not the "perfect" WR2.   He's certainly not the ideal and at this point everyone should know that.  I can only assume he was just careless with his words because he takes offense to the deserved criticism.

There is nothing "perfect" about being second in the league in total drops and 185th in catch % when you are getting close to 100 targets.   Too much inefficiency.   That inconsistency from Davis.........combined with that of lesser ball droppers like McKenzie/Shakir/Knox playing one slot ahead of where they should in the pecking order........helped allow teams to roll extra attention to Diggs in the second half of last season,  which made the offense look chaotic at times.   Far from ideal.

The Bills haven't really had a top 10 WR2 since early in the 2020 season before John Brown got hurt.   The Bills passing game looked considerably different then.   Far too much off-script offense in the mix now.  Even just the threat of a screen to the otherwise-bomb-threat Smoke(which produced a handful of huge, game changing plays) had an impact that the offense has lacked ever since.   An ideal WR2 is either great at one thing or able to beat you in numerous ways and be both high production and efficient.  Like a WR1.   This is the way the league is now and there has been an influx of WR talent in the last 5 years like we've never seen before so it's not far fetched to have 2 WR1's.

I’ll take a slightly different perspective with a similar theme…. It’s not unreasonable to have a 1A and 1B with all the WR talent in the league, but it’s not needed. However, if you don’t have a 1A and 1B you absolutely need three viable targets that can make game changing or drive changing plays in the passing game. Whether that’s 1A paired with two solid 2 WRs or a more “traditional” 1A, 2A, and a top 10 TE. With all the new talent at the WR position procuring two guys who are solid WR2 talents at differing stages of their careers should be attainable if it’s prioritized.

Good point. The potential is there for the Bills to play many home games in bad weather especially late in the season. Yet the Bills have a team that isn't built for bad weather.

Adding a pair of power backs, a first round TE, an extra 1-tech, and a bear of a guard leads me to believe they recognized that as an issue. We’ll see if it works out the way everyone hopes.

The only short career player I’ve ever approved of being in the hall was Terrell Davis.  He was dominant and won a ring.

Luck would be a lock if he played a few more years and won a ring, but not with his body of work as is.

Wow, what are the odds of posting the same argument at the exact same time

Gale Sayers as well. I don’t think Luck should get in. IMO, the only other shortened career that deserves to be in is Sterling Sharpe. Once Favre got to GB Sharpe was going back and forth with Rice for best receiver in the NFL for 3 years then the neck injury happened.

It’s pretty much impossible to know whether the drop off was due to Rogers or due to that awful team they put around him.

It’s actually a pretty solid roster. The big issues were young receivers and  revolving injuries, particularly on defense and the Oline. The interesting thing to me is that even with the injuries that Packers Oline was better than the Jets Oline last year. I’m really curious if Rodgers will extend plays this year or just turf the ball when there’s pressure like last season.

I think Hines was a de-facto Isaiah McKenzie replacement that wont drop as many balls.  I agree, we should actually THROW once in a while to our RBs, especially Cook and Hines, they both have speed and operate well in space.  Maybe do something radical this year like a screen pass to a RB, maybe our O Line with Kromer in and Dorsey in year 2 can actually design some plays.

The biggest problem this team has with RB screens is Josh Allen. More specifically, how teams play against Allen. Teams will often have a spy, slow rush the ends, or utilize other tactics to maintain extra eyes and a free man in the backfield. The result is that it’s easier to sniff out screens to RBs.

Now, what I’d really like to see as an alternative are more TE and WR screens. The added size and speed this year to the pass catching units should help with this. There very well could be some easy big plays available if you can get a screen to Hardy behind Gabe and Kincaid

Because he is actually a solid player.  His down season are not related to his talent, it had more to do with the situation he was in.  And given the price of WR's these days, his deal is reasonable.

To be honest, if Pats land Hopkins still (and most the talk still seems to lend towards them being the more likely spot), they could have a sneaky good offense this year if Mac Jones can just be solid or better now that he has a real OC again with O'Brien.

Pats are one of those teams no one is thinking too much about right now, but if they land Hopkins, they could be one of those sleeper teams that end up being a tougher opponent than people think this year.  Not a real contender per se, just not the roll over opponent I think people assume they will be.

Pretty much how I view it. A competent offense will allow their defense to be more aggressive on the backend and more diverse overall. I’m not sure it’ll matter against the Bills, but it’ll matter against teams who aren’t top 10 on both sides of the ball.

I am all in favor if Miami screwing the away team the way they do...it's smart.

BUT, opponents should be allowed to fire back, i.e., bring their own lightweight, fold up, awning system or what have you, just to get out of the sun.

I know there are concerns about interrupting sight lines from the stands, but there has to be a way to do something better than what is currently done.

Well, the Bills could just build a tunnel that funnels and speeds up Lake Erie’s December wind right across the visitors sideline. 🤷‍♂️

Seriously though, they should just schedule those September dolphins games for 4pm or later, or make it so every team can use misters.

Yes, I just don't see any reason why Allen would say Diggs' issues were not football related if it was about play calling and I assume that Allen talked  with McDermott and perhaps a PR person about what he was going to say before he met the reporters.  However, that Digg's was unhappy with the play calling absolutely makes the most sense out of the various theories out there.

I’m not sure Diggs was unhappy with the playcalling, so much as Allen not telling Dorsey to change up some things based on what they’re seeing on the field. That would put the emphasis more on “communication” but look like a straight X’s and O’s issue. Who knows 🤷‍♂️. All we really know is winning cures all, but those wins need to be playoff victories this year.

Probably because it came from the horses mouth…

“Doug and I have always stayed in touch since 2010,” Hall said. “It’s almost like the same vibe. What he believes in, I believe in, I believe how he’s leading and his leadership is great. I’ve learned so much from him.”

With Pederson, Hall will never be OC.

You’re beating a dead horse. With Dorsey, Brady and Shula here Hall wasn’t going to get the position anyways. Hall has personal relationships with Pederson, Andy Reid, etc. His ultimate goal may be to move upwards with external promotions for other coaches he knows. None of us know exactly how he’s attempting to forward his career, but we can certainly gather that most coaching promotions partly stem from nepotism.
