Tyler Bass should not eliminated from this discussion.  He is not worth $4.5 Mil this year. Not after his choke job last year. 82.8  FG%.

We could use a new kicker, or someone brought in during training camp to compete with him.

This is a good point. If Von and Knox can restructure their deals to include some incentives (I assume it is also Knox's case), Bass is primary candidate to do the same.

Are you talking about the $1,293,000 figures that are listed each year from 2023-2026? The ones that say "restructure" above them? That's what it is. It was salary that was turned into bonus in 2023 and spread out over the years until 2026. Yes it was supposed to be dead cap, but that was only if the contract voided and accelerated all that cap to 2024.

And yes the new cap kept the contract from voiding so those figures never became actual dead cap. But they're still real figures. Instead of becoming dead cap after the contract would void, the contract years became real years and the prorated restructure charges just stayed where they were - $1,293,000 each year through 2026.

They're not phantom numbers. It's a real charge to the cap. But it never became actual "dead cap" because dead cap is a cap charge for a player who's no longer under contract. Since he's still under contract those figures just stayed where they always were - prorated cap charge for the 2023 restructure.

When we see a dead cap charge on Spotrac for a player who's actually still under contract, that isn't really a dead cap figure yet. It's just Spotrac listing the figure as dead cap because that's what's expected to happen when a contract with void years actually voids. If a new contract is reached and the void years don't void, the dead cap charge doesn't disappear in real life because it was never there as dead cap in real life. It just disappears off Spotrac because they were listing it as dead cap even though it technically wasn't yet.

Thanks a lot, but I don't think we understood each other. I knew everything what you wrote (at least I think so haha), but my question was slightly different.

Pls look at Sportrac again, there are two "Matt Milanos" out there in both 2025 and 2026. In 2025, he has "regular" cap hit of $16,122,000 and dead cap of $2,586,000 in orange.

And what I say is that I think that orange line with dead cap shouldn't be there, since it is already included in his actual cap hit of $16M (or to be exact, $1,293,000 is included in cap hit in 2025 and other $1,293,000 in 2026).

My question is if this is right, i.e. if Sportrac really has it wrong and the other Milano line shouldn't be there (making our 2025 cap situation better than it shows). My understanding is that you actually implicitly confirmed it above, but want to make sure.

Yeah, glad they recouped pennies on the dollar with that trade. They botched the most important position in the game multiple times until lucking into Purdy.

    49ers get:

    2021 first-round pick (No. 3 overall)

    Dolphins get:

    2021 first-round pick (No. 12 overall)

    2022 first-round pick (No. 29 overall)

    2022 third-round pick (No. 101 overall)

    2023 first-round pick (No. 29 overall)

They’re well run, but they’ve made some massive mistakes too. For as much flack as Beane gets for his Day 2 RB love, you should see the Lynch/Shannahan bungling of Day 2 picks on RB. They’re not great early in the draft all together.

Thanks for this. I think it is really hilarious to praise 49ers front office for Lance trade conveniently forgetting how did they get him in the first place.

They are well run organization but they also make their fair share of bad decisions.

This makes the most sense of any of the possibilities.

No it doesn't. Because if it does, then Beane would have to be totally incompetent for not knowing that. He clearly counted with the 3rd round pick and if it was like this we had no chance to get one.

There is something really weird going on here. I'll reserve my judgement until Beane says something or we'll find out more in some other way. It all speculation in this thread up to this point.

  4. @Tuco, I saw you around explaining things... Could you please have a look at Sportrac and confirm that it is showing nonsense about Matt Milano's dead cap in 2025 and 2026?

Besided his normal numbers he has another row just with some dead money ($2,586,000), which are apparently last two years of prorated signing bonus restructured in 2022. These were originally void years, but in 2023 they were "covered" by extension so this dead cap should dissappear and become part of his regular cap hit. Therefore, those 2025 and 2026 dead caps should not be there, and his only dead cap is $4,889,000 in 2027 (void year for another signing + option bonuses), right?

In other words, we actually have more cap space in 2025 ($35,319,356 + $2,586,000), right?

    Spotrac is fully updated:

    https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/buffalo-bills/cap//

We are still $19,782,663 OVER the cap, but a simple restructure of Allen's contract will get us under. And there are still plenty of potential moves to be made.

    Came to post this.

Fully updated with today's move including Douglas, but Hines is oddly still there. Not sure if they don't think it's official or what.

So if Hines is really released, we are at -$15m.

We need to await further details about this “restructure “ ..: you might be going off early suggesting it’s a pay cut .  There was no mention of that as yet ..

    My reasons it won’t happen;

    1. He was the best CB at the Bills after he got here last year

    2. Benford is an option first to move there

    3. I doubt Douglas would want to play a lesser market valued position ad the clock is ticking on his career …he has to agree to it too … if the Bills don’t want to pay him too play CB then I’m sure another team will

    4. Safety market is oversupplied so they can get a proven FA on the cheap anyway … no need to move anyone there

    We already know.

$3.5m was converted with 3 void years, creating $2.6m cap space this year and same dead cap in 2025...

  7. I loved Morse and he was great for Josh. Thanks for everything Mitch.

On the other hand, I absolutely love what Beane is doing last 3 days. It gives me hope that he is serious with getting younger and keeping cap situation as healthy as possible. This might mean he can manage this year without needing to touch Diggs' and Miller's contracts, which would be huge.

Don’t be so sure. We have two gaping holes at safety. A first round safety would not shock me one bit.

Like I said, won't happen. We are drafting WR.

Preparing the fans for a Rd1 Safety

    Cmon, just stop.

    1. Beane is too smart to draft safety in the first in general.

    2. There isn't one close to be worth it this year.

    3. We are drafting WR in the first this year almost no matter what.

$7.5 mill saved with the release.   Still,  stings, but necessary.  Such a great part of the turnaround

Really? That's his salary or we actually save $7.5M in cap space this year? If it's cap savings then yes this has to be done.

His salary is $7.7m, savings are $5.7m.

    $2m dead cap.

  11. Wow.

    Now I am truly surprised.

Anyway, this is what I wanted from Beane, more tough business decisions.

Thanks for everything Jordan and Micah, it's really a shame that your era didn't bring Bills SuperBowl.

Team will be different without them.
