Couple of things, since this happened right near me. This woman isn't as "sweet" as the post makes her out to be. The judge overrode the sentence yesterday and released her, only to have her held when the police re-arrested her for passing a bunch of bad checks further down south during the summer. In addition, if you've ever driven along I-95 even in the dark of night it tends to have a pretty good flow of traffic all going 65 MPH or better. Throwing anything at that speed with that amount of traffic is a major accident waiting to happen. Do a little research, a couple winters ago, right in that stretch on I95 south, there was almost a 200 car pile-up that made national news. Go back a few years before that and a similar incident happened that crippled a father and his daughter was even worse. In fact I know that as my daughter was in gymnastics with the girl. The judge should not have let this woman out of this sentence and it's BS that the media is using the fact that she has three children and a husband in Iraq as an excuse to make her less guilty of what could have been a disaster.

Except that isn't true. I just moved this past year to a county one north of where I was. The county I just left had a per student spending of just under 9000 per student per year. My current county is 8200 per student per year. That said I am one county closer to DC but the average teacher salary is only about 2000 more per year, so the incentive to teach there doesn't really exist. Yet for all that spending, the comparable salaries and everything that county had 1/3 of the schools fail the NCLB tests that are used in Virginia (SOLs). My current county had all but three schools get certified, two of which they probably felt was happening as the principles had already been fired even before the school scores were announced. Each school district has roughly the same number of schools 66 vs 80. Yet the one that spends 20% per student failed at a much higher rate. Sometimes it isn't about money as in this case. The school administration, the good old boy hiring network and basically although illegal in VA, the almost like school unionization of the teachers there have ruined the schools.

I think NCLB can hurt some of the better teachers out there. I believe there are some (10%) who do work with the kids and teach their ass off. I think NCLB can hold them back because they are forced to teach to ensurethe kids pass the testing required. However I don't thin NCLB was meant for them. I think it was for the other 90% who live off lesson plans they prepared years before or worse yet handed down from the teachers before them. They were teaching drones and really didn't understand the subject matter, just repeated what was on the whiteboard. hence not only does NCLB force the kids to take certain standard tests to ensure they understand the basics of their class levels, but it also required the teachers to show that they are qualified to actually teach, understand and answer questions on their area of teching. That is the bigger issue that I have heard rom teachers is that they have too many of their brother and sisters who cannot/will not do what is necessary to become the expert in the subject. They don't like the government telling them that they actually have to know math, science, english in order to teach it.

Weather sucked????? Huh? Granted I wasn't here, but I also wasn't too far away. It was upper 20's and 30's with a little snow on Saturday. Why did that suck, it had to be better then Buffalo. Granted it normally is about 50 this time of year, but you really couldn't complain. So all you did was eat at Kevins place, that's it. Nothing else?

And yet the Dems said they had at least and probably closer to 60 repubs who were going to vote for it. If it wasn't for CNN this would look like egg on Pelosis face. "Vote slams Bush's Iraq plan" Yet with so few cross over votes this is anything but a slam. Hell the Dems didn't even carry all of their own. No reason to hate Dems just the sad leadership that exists on both sides. There are some good folks on both sides, too bad most don't get the leadership because they are not mean-spirited enough to make headlines. They prefer to actually do their jobs and come up with meaningful bills.
