For LV in particular few would attend game without a dome since temperature is so hot there.  Same with Arizona.

Understood, but couldn't the same be said for the games here in January if there's a lake effect snowstorm. I have lived in Arizona, and most games from October's on are just fine. Same situation in LA and Vegas.

Outdoorsman survivalist?  Hardly.   I’m just a football fan who knows the roots of the game are outdoors and the weather at game time is the weather at game time.

Those of you with a preference for moderate conditions should watch at home because that’s the experience you seem to want.   Indoors and perfect.  Nothing wrong with that.  I get it.  Other people will go the game.

Why are the state of the art stadiums, that are all in warm weather sights(LA, Vegas,) all domes. Why not us? The perfect conditions are conducive to our wide open, vertical passing offense, with one of the top 2 or 3 QBs in football.

I guess that's why their selling tickets to the final home game, where the division is at stake, for $8.00. I get it, you're a purist, but a dome is perfect to create a home field advantage like no other. Look at how they rock New Orleans, Vegas and LA. Buffalo, with lake effect snow and wind conditions, is not ideal for the entertainment value of January football.

John Brodie.  Yes, he was a football player, golfer, and announcer all in one!

Curt Gowdy was a great broadcaster; one of the all time best.  And yes, Charlie Jones was play by play too.

I guess I'm changing the topic as this is supposed to be about color guys.

Either way, it's good talking about the old AFL. My entire neighborhood were die hard Giants fans. Watching Jets, Bills, Dolphins,Chiefs Chargers were these wide open, high scoring memorable jewels. Gowdy, Charlie, Enberg and Criquie delivered these gems to a kid who lived and died with the Bills.

    Just curious, which Hampton?

    West Hampton

Are people talking about Dick Enberg?  He was AWESOME.

Heck, I always liked Charlie Jones!

Paul Maguire was like the poor man's John Madden.  Very similar cut of cloth, but not quite as good.  He was still great though.

Who didn't love "The Budweiser Sports Line with Paul Maguire" back in the day?!

Used to watch that religiously, desperate for any Bills media coverage I could find.  The good old days pre-internet!

Charlie did some memorable Bills games. He was NBCs 2nd crew behind Gowdy and Christman. Wasn't Charlie play by play? Loved his voice. Do you remember John Brody. He was solid.

I’m going to use James Lofton as an example, he may not be the greatest color guy, but he did one of the Bills games this year and his analysis of why a play didn’t work was great. He explained how Sanders cutting off a route too short effected Beasley, which resulted in an incompletion. He then explained how Sanders should have run the route, really good.

John Madden was the greatest color guy and it’s not even close, he was a former player and coach.

Loved Madden, but you're probably too young to remember Paul Christman and Paul McGuire. They were really good.

I guess, being the outdoorsman survivalist type of guy, you enjoy single digit temps with 40mph gusts . Those of us with a preference for more moderate conditions, might opt in favor of watching from home. BTW, woman and kids usually favor perfect conditions.

  8. This corrupt 70 year old jerk has used the NFL games as his personal vehicle to exact revenge on his critics. The union has insulated this menace from suspension or forced retirement. If anything can turn NFL obsessed viewers away from the game, it's power hungry officials that change outcomes because of vendettas against a player.

    Fair points all Hampton.

The most famous color commentator of all time, Howard Cosell, wrote an autobiography entitled, "I never played the game".  There can be some exceptions to the rule about ex-NFL types in the booth.  I'd take Aunt Edna from National Lampoon's Vacation over Collinsworth again.

Not saying these color guys appeal to everybody, but the game is such an incredible TV friendly product, coupled with a conduit for gambling activities, that it just doesn't matter unless someone alienates a portion of the market with some inflammatory comments.

I think we can all agree that there are a lot of terrible football (and really sports) color commentators out there. I believe the NFL needs to change its hiring model.

i think there was this belief that hiring former players and coaches as commentators would cause fans to like them or watch them more because of their popularity. I don’t think that assumption is right. I don’t know anyone who likes a commentator or his work just because he was liked or known as a player.

There are now so many really brilliant content creators out there (media, podcasts, YouTube) who dissect film endlessly and would provide so much better and more astute analysis than the likes of Tiki Barber or Adam
Archuletta Or Troy Ailman, or Brian Griese, or Mark Sanchez, etc.

I would like to see the NFL shift away from the hiring of recently retired players and instead look at some of these “film nerds” as possible hires. As average football fans are getting smarter and more into the X’s and O’s, the current model of having former players trot out a bunch of vapid talking points is not working.

    Any thoughts?

Football's ratings are through the roof. They dwarf any other sport or entertainment content. The color guys are former players and coaches for a good reason. They provide on field experience that viewers enjoy. The networks, who pay a fortune for the rights, have a time tested formula for picking analysts. Don't try to reinvent the wheel.

I know the corporate angle won't sell because so few are left in Western NY but how much extra is it for a roof? Not retractable but just something like a Minnesota or Indy?

Considering it took 50 big ones to get a new stadium, the difference is not enough to be a deal breaker. I can't  believe that between local Canadian corporate interests and other cities in NY state, Suites wouldn't be desirable if the Bills dominated the AFC.

I agree, but retractable domes are somewhat old school already. With the new glazing technology they can get tons of natural light in the stadium without the expense and maintenance of the motors, etc. Check out both Minneapolis and Los Angeles as just the latest examples.

I stand corrected, how about something like those.

  13. Just curious, did government decision makers poll Buffalo and Suburban residents as to their preference regarding a dome. This is small market thinking at its best. Deny western NY a new stadium for decades opting in favor of refurbishment, and then go cheap in the most horrific weather location in the country. Did they consider the corporate preferences considering their boxes will represent a good % of revenue. This team, with an elite QB, and great receivers, along with a defense with speed would benefit from perfect conditions. Fans would flock to a state of the art, ultramodern retractable roof stadium. Speaking for  myself, coming from LI, I would make a family tradition out of seeing a high leverage Dec game or playoff,  an annual.

Motor is much better than Moss, we need an actual 2nd RB.  And Motor and Moss are 3rd year guys.  Yes, the OL has been bad, but Motor seems to have compensated for that more than Moss.  Moss is seemingly less physical in his play than Motor.

oh, yes, the brutal drops.  Not sure how that happens.  Hopefully that's fixed.  He could be a 3 down back.  I'd still bring another in during the offseason, as well as tell Daboll to run the ball more.  It helps everyone to be more balanced.

Motor looked timid and soft for most of the season until Tampa. He was not part of the offense. All I'm saying is that now ,in the elements, with the O-line playing better, we can judge Moss as the run will be featured.

That's very true.  But why did it come down to that play?  Why didn't we play like we are capable of the entire game.  We should have won that game if we showed up in the 1st half.

no doubt we can get it going.  We just to actually, you know, get it going.  We can begin with a beatdown of the Jets this weekend.  I also have not seen Moss running with authority.  Motor looks better than him in every regard.  At this point, I'd try Williams over Moss and see what happens v. Jets.

Why is there condemnation of 2nd year rbs, when the O-line was inept. Motor couldn't do anything for most of the season. Dabol didn't call running plays for entire halves of games(Tampa), yet you inexplicably want to play a guy who they cut a week ago and who hasn't played this year, instead of Moss. If you taped the Atlanta game, Moss ran well with the few carries he had. He ran better against Carolina as well. The O-line is playing better with different blocking schemes, and Motor ran wild for 120.

  16. The Bills are ascending at seasons end. They have learned that Josh cannot be expected to be our entire running attack and win games by himself. The O-line is opening holes and Motor and Moss are running with authority. The games they lost (Tampa, Tenn, NE) were winnable, but we lost all of them, which means we weren't good enough. Now our season starts. Remember, the Bucs got it going in Dec. last year and won it all.

    Yeah, five games for Star.

Well, ten actually, but who's counting? Not everyone.

Star had been having a really good season early. Covid and whatever is happening now have raised major questions, about availability and health moving forward. Hard to say whether Covid affected him or what's going on.

But yeah, Oliver's been our best, definitely.

The fact that he dressed for 10 doesn't mean he contributed to anything good. He sucked up a roster spot and when we needed him most, he was nowhere. Sympathy for any personal problems aside, we need committed, balls to the wall grinders, if we expect to advance to the SB. Oliver and Harry, play hurt and keep on coming. They will lead us into the playoffs.

I've been supporting a New England round 1 matchup, but if we could land Raiders, I'd take that in a heart beat.

It will be a fun final week, keeping an eye on all the out-of-town scores!

And we won't be so distracted in the 1pm slot, as we don't play until later.

I just think the Bengals have done a cost benefit analysis, and concluded a rested Burrow with a solid knee heading into the playoffs is worth more than a shot at a higher seed.

    It probably is!

Agreed, but they should be careful what they wish for. Patriots strength is their dbs and front getting pressure. This could neutralize Joe's vertical attack. Also NE will run against Cincinnati at will.
