Good point? You'd have the player on the roster.

That's like saying you can save $300 you planned on spending on groceries by lighting $250 on fire and then just not eating. The math only works if you ignore what the values represent.

And what if the $300 worth of groceries are already half rotten, and you probably won't even get $25 worth of food out of it? Then you saved $25.

Except the Bills save 25 million next year they can spend else where. And the year after, and the year after.

No on Higgins.  He is a very good WR2 but wants top end WR1 money.

What people keep forgetting is that this is a historically rich and deep WR draft.  You don't give up a lot ahead of this draft for a WR unless you are getting back an elite player.  Higgins is very good, but he isn't so good that you pass up having WR's on rookie deals for 4-5 years to overpay Higgins to be an underwhelming WR1.

Just my 2 cents in regards to Higgins.  IMHO Aiyuk > Higgins and I would feel better about a trade for Aiyuk than Higgins.  Aiyuk I think can do what Diggs did here, reach a whole new level playing with Allen.

Higgins reminds me of when Peerless Price got traded to the Falcons just to find out he was better suited as a top end WR2 next to another great WR and not really ever meant to be a WR1.  Higgins is probably a better player than Price, just using that example of a team that over paid both in trade compensation and contract for a guy who wasn't best suited to be the man.

GunnerBill is right about Aiyuk's 2024 hit being 14, not 7. And totally agree that Aiyuk would be much better in this offense.

Beane could probably make the cap space if the 9ers were willing, but the plan may be to lock up 2 wr's in this draft to have cost controlled players heading into, dare I say, the second half of Josh Allen's career.

To me the question is, do they think k they have enough production with Kincaid, Samuels and Shakir to roll the dice on u proven talent vs trading draft capital for a proven commodity.

    We can’t afford him.

His salary is 7m this year. They can make room for that. Then the next three seasons we get almost 90mil back from Diggs being off the book.

The knock on AD Mitchell is his body language and effort when the ball isn't going his way.

Call me crazy, but the LAST thing I want after trading Stefon Diggs away is a guy whose default mode when not getting the ball is "phoning it in".

Combine that with his failure to ever crack 1,000 yards in a season or truly dominate as a college receiver, and I couldn't in all good conscience vote for him.

For what it's worth, if this exact scenario presented itself to Buffalo come draft night, I think they'd draft Kool-Aid McKinstry. That's not who I voted for, because that's not what I would do. But I believe it's what Beane would do if this is how the draft played out.

I think there's a chance of that too. They would probably see it as drafting another Tre White.

I'm pretty sure @GunnerBill has brought this point up before but there have been no wrs picked since the top 4 went off the board.  Now perhaps that is because Bills fans want them to be their for the upcoming pick but I think it's realistic that after those 4 there is a lull and gap before the next wr is picked.

Through 25 picks the breakdown is:

    5 ots

    4 qbs and wrs

    3 dt, edge, and cb

    1 te, og, and c

    0 safety, lb, or rb

through 14 picks there were 12 offensive and 2 defensive players

the next 11 went 4 offensive and 7 defensive.

Thought for sure Arnold was coming off the board there.  They love their first round dbs lol.

I was going to take Arnold at 23 with the Vikes, but fell asleep at the wheel this morning.

I don't know if the rest of the math in this table is right but Diggs had 578 receiving yards, 62 receptions, and 99 targets during this span (last 12 games including playoffs).  JoeMa is just a little bit completely off the mark here.  I highly doubt everything in this tweet.

It looks like someone added up YBC not yards...

Still, a 48 yard per game average over the final 12 games is no where near #1 wr production.

I'd go after Aiyuk. He offers the deep threat that Davis provided with the possession capabilities of Diggs, and is a very good blocker.

    Rebuild? No. Reload? Yes.

Anyone who did not expect this kind of roster shake up, do not fully understand what it is like having a high contract QB in the salary cap era.  These kind of moves are what it takes to stay competitive.  The Chiefs did it with Hill, the Chargers had to move on from Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, the Bengals will have to do it eventually with Higgins etc... I am glad Beane is making the moves now, rather than waiting until it is too late.

Plus it's way too early to determine how this trade effects the upcoming season. We have to see what Beane has up his sleeves to procure a #1 wr that effectively replaces Diggs.

Having two #2s next year and no Diggs makes a trade into the top 15 this year using #28 and our 25 1st rounder much more likely IMO.

That would probably  be enough to go get Brian Thomas Jr. And maybe Beane would trade up to make sure he lands Mitchell if he views him as having #1 potential.

But Beane might value proven talent over potential talent. And I think 28 could get Aiyuk from the 9ers. Would need some magic to make a new contract work with this year's cap.

But I'd love Aiyuk as the new #1. Think he'd have close to Diggs production with Josh as his QB. Plus he's a much better blocker than Diggs...

    It's going to be interesting!

With the 23rd overall pick, the Minnesota Vikings select Darius Robinson, DT, Missouri.

The Viking have a lot of holes to fill, and spend a lot of their FA on the defensive side of the ball.  Robinson comes in and shores up the defensive line and allows them to add more weapons on offense in this deep draft.  No receiver jumped out of value, so we have time.

The Cowboys @JJGaunaare on the clock

Sorry was in call all morning and got on just after you made the pick... Been catching up on the Diggs trade for the last 45 mins...

Why would that be dumb?  Premium position, some 1st round prospects, need likely next year.

I really don’t understand the fear of CB in the first round- and we hear it every year at draft time.  It is a passing dominated league, somebody needs to cover receivers- hopefully well.

I am not arguing that they should take a CB in the first, but if they do it would not be like taking a RB or S or LB in the first- those positions have somewhat lesser value based on how the league pays them.

I think cb is more of a need than people want to believe. Benford's been injured both of his first two seasons, Douglas is on a one year contract and Elam hasn't developed yet.

I'd really love the Bills to pair Thomas with the current wr room, even if that means a trade up. I also think Mitchell has wr 1 potential, and I really like Legette.

But I don't think a cb is off the table at 28 if a true lock down down #1 cb is there the the DE's and DT's with solid 1st round grades are gone.

With the 10th pick of the TSW Draft, the NY Jets select Olu Fashanu, OT, Penn State.

The Jets almost went receiver here, but Rodgers won't be able to hit those receivers if he's on his back.  Considered to be one of the top Tackles in the draft, Fashanu can step in and immediately protect Rodgers from opposing defenders.  Fashanu, unfortunately, cannot protect Rodgers from the MetLife turf.

The Minnesota Vikings @Motorin'are on the clock

With the 11th pick, the Minnesota Vikings select Jayden Daniels, QB LSU...

The Denver Broncos, @Big Blitz are on the clock...

In the real world, the Vikes will have give up both #1's and possibly a 1st rounder next year in order to snag Daniels. But there may be no chance he gets past Washington at #2.

I think AD has a high ceiling and I'd be happy to have him.  However,

there's clips of Mitchell taking plays off when he knows he isn't getting the ball that are somewhat alarming

I'm sure teams will really want a satisfactory explanation

Sounds like a great smoke screen to try to make sure he's available at 28.

Thanks Gunner. I always look forward to and enjoy these, and your reasoning is sound throughout.

I just can't seem to get excited about AD Mitchell. Maybe it's the tape that doesn't pop off the screen, maybe it's the talk of his taking routes off or having bad body language when he knows he won't be getting the ball in a given play, maybe it's that he's a jack of all trades and master of none. I just...don't look at him and think "now HERE'S a guy that's gonna take the Bills passing game to the next level". Am I wrong? Is there something you can tell me about him or a shine a light on that would make me feel better about his selection?

Assuming the board falls how you have it laid out, I'd rather see the Bills trade back, gain a 3rd round pick, and take a different receiver in round 2.

Here's how to think about all that. His QB sucked and is mostly a first read / half field read guy in an offense that spread the ball all over the place. Texas had 15 guys below Mitchell on the depth chart catch nearly 60% of their receptions.

There will be a huge difference playing with Josh Allen. Josh throws the ball everywhere on the field, the play is never dead, and the Bills are very top heavy in their targets.

And then the major plus to Mitchell's game is his clutch genes. Big game, crucial moment TD's. Including national championship winning score.
