Great point re: replacing Neal at gunner. Hollins is a great gunner and absolutely will replace Neal.

Instead of thinking about WR depth chart, lets think about pass catchers in the Bills offense:

    1. Diggs

    2. Kincaid

    3. 1st round / 2nd round draft pick

    4. Shakir

    5. Cook

    6. Knox

    7. Hollins / Shorter

    8. Late draft or cheap FA

If we draft a legit #2 WR, we're all set. We don't need to spend another premium pick or premium contract on a WR that would probably be the 8th weapon in the passing game. Something to think about in different context!

I also think this wr class is so stacked that you can find some real value on Day 3 at the position.

Agreed, but “better than Gabe” hopefully is not the bar to clear at 28.  To be clear, I’m not saying I don’t like Legette, but 28 feels rich for him.

I hear that... I see Legette as a cross between Deebo and Aj Brown. And like them think he will go in early to mid round 2. So you have to either take him a bit too early at 28, or trade up in round 2.

I think Worthy could go as the 4th or 5th and push Mitchell down to us. Or within a small trade up.

But if all the 1st round grade wr's are gone and Beane couldn't trade up, then he has to go BPA (hopefully at a premium position of need: DE, CB) or trade down into early 2... And if neither of those are available, I think that's when you look to take a wr like Legette at 28.

I don't have Leggette in the top 10 (he is 11th on my board), I would target him in the 3rd, maybe late 2nd.  He has all the same flaws as Gabe Davis.  Lacks acceleration and burst as he is a strider and doesn't get up to his top speed unless running in a straight line.  Struggles off the LOS and getting separation in the shorter and mid areas of the field.  He is going to be a project, I would rather take him in the 3rd if we take him.

    1. Harrison
    2. Nabers
    3. Odunze
    4. Thomas
    5. McConkey
    6. Mitchell
    7. Coleman
    8. Franklin
    9. Worthy
    10. Pearsall
    11. Leggette

There are some similarities to Gabe and Legette in terms of size. But there are a few key differences that would make Legette an upgrade.

One is that Legette's top speed measured on the field last year was faster than anyone in the NFL during the season. The man exceeded 22 mph.

Legette also excels in a number of short routes that Davis doesn't. He's very good on bubble screens, drags and quick slants. Those are some bread and butter plays that allowed him to be one of the best receivers beating man coverage last year.

Also, his 73% catch percentage last year is better than any year Davis has had...

So his long speed is much better than Davis, he produces very well in the short underneath game to beat man, and he catch the ball more consistently.

6th best is simply your guess...it doesn't mean 5 will go before we pick, and it certainly doesn't mean the ones drated ahead will be better picks. And also...in a deep class, the sixth player drafted at his position might be a really good player.

You're being a Debbie Downer when there are plenty of reasons to be positive and excited.

The last time there was a wr class this deep the 6th wr taken was Brandon Aiyuk and the 7th was Tee Higgins.

But the "5th" best wr was taken where the Bills would have picked, and that was Justin Jefferson.

It’s not a very good edge draft and even though Kneeland is a mid round type he’s prob going round 2-3

This guy will be a Day 2 pick this year …

    DE class is thin

A guy I'm high on as a sleeper is Mohamed Kamara from CSU. He's about the same build as Jerry Hughes, but significantly faster and more athletic. Kamara had 22 sacks and 33 TFL over the last two seasons as well.

The need for a #2 is less about catching the balls that currently go to Kincaid, Shakir, Cook, etc., and more about having a dangerous enough weapon opposite Diggs to prevent defenses from focusing so heavily on him.

If a #2 receiver reduces the production of Kincaid and Shakir, I don’t care as long as it INCREASES the production of Diggs. I I’m not saying I need 1,700 yards from Diggs — I’m saying I need a set of weapons so stacked that somebody on the defense is seriously compromised.

When teams doubled Diggs it was often out of a two high look with the Safety to Diggs side of the field. Kincaid and Shakir working deep over the middle of the field will do more to get Diggs one vs one than a wr on the opposite side of the field...

I have high hopes for drafting a wr early that can turn into a future 1a receiver. I think we have a future 1b right now in Kincaid, and I hopeful he can close to that potential this year or next.

    Even this frightens me 😬

Realistically the #2 receiver in terms of production will be Kincaid. It would be great if the rookie is #3. But that could very well be Shakir.

Then there's Cook and Knox. So that's a top 6 pass catchers being Diggs, Kincaid, Shakir, Rookie 1, Cook, Knox.

Kincaid should have close to 100 catches and 1000 yards this year... Imo, they need to find a way to get Kincaid, Diggs and Shakir on the field at the same time frequently. And that might mean a focus on tight formations.

It's the Jake Kumerow role guys. Calm down.

He's a great blocker at the X position and can catch a ball or two.

He had significantly better production than both Sherfield and Kumerow the last several years with a worse QB.

Cry about it all you want, it's a good signing.

If he replaces Neal at gunner than there's a good chance we can go back to carrying 6 wr's as well.

    So it's:

    1. Diggs

    2. Draft (1st or 2nd round)

    3. Shakir

    4. Draft (please)

    5. Hollins vs. Shorter

    6. ???

I gotta believe this is the plan, although he might be higher than 6 depending how Shorter / Hamler / other later round rookie WRs pan out.

He did have one season a while ago where he did look good. But I think as Bills fans we need to stop tying ourselves in knots of wishful thinking.

I'm assuming he's a good blocker, so yeah he's replacing Sherfield. But Sherfield was in the game way too often in key passing downs. Hopefully Hollins can be a 20 reception guy while not having to be that outside receiver running a crucial route on 3rd and 15 late in the game.

The Chiefs whole WR room was filled with guys around Mack Hollins level this season and they managed to make it work.

I'm not excited about this signing but it's not like he can be a Kelvin Benjamin level flop.  He's a backup/ST guys primarily with some decent NFL experience.

That's true, but it's more of a numbers game for the Chiefs. What I mean by that is that they have way more total number of receivers contributing to the passing offense.

Last year their #2 wr in receptions was Justin Watson with 27. He had 2 TE's, a RB and another wr ahead of him. Which makes him #5 in receptions.

And then they have 7 guys below him catch between 10-25 passes each, and another 6 that caught passes... Those bottom of the roster pass catchers produced nearly 150 receptions and 1500 yards with 9 TD's  on last year.

Whereas the bottom roster guys including Knox caught 77 passes for 644 yards and 6 TD's...

I like this signing if he's wr 6 and we draft a #2 outside and a multi-functional slot / outside receiver to backup Shakir.

I have a feeling if we dip into the FA pool it will be someone like Josh Reynolds (that is if he does doesn't break the bank as well somewhere else)...

    Or Donovan People's Court Jones.

To those saying Beane had leverage in demanding a pay cut, I'm pretty sure Von was guaranteed $10.9 million dollars this coming season. He could have collected that money for doing absolutely nothing if the Bills had released him. He could have just trained and waited for a contender to sign him in the latter part of the season. 10.9 million plus whatever else he could get for playing part of a season, no mini camps, training camps, etc.

He didn't have to do this, he had lots of options; one of them being collect $10.9 million for staying home and doing nothing. I don't have high expectations but I also won't be surprised if he can come back and be effective as a pass rush specialist this season.  I'd rather the Bills get to find out as opposed to just eating $20+ million in dead cap.

They get to find out while lowering his cap hit.

This is totally how I feel on Mitchell. I just don't know what the thing is that makes me go "wow you gotta have him." He is a solid prospect. He does a lot of stuff well. I just don't know where the special is beyond his hands are really good. I would be fine with him as the pick but it isn't one that would like really excite me.

I've been excited about Mitchell for awhile now. I see a comparison to Cee Dee Lamb and Justin Jefferson in the way he sets up his routes and accelerates out of his breaks.

But I'm also back on the Legette train. He definitely needs to work on his route running, but I think a major strength that would instantly upgrade the Bills offense is his ability to beat man coverage quickly with his size and speed.

Rattler had a 150+ QBR targeting Legette in man coverage last year, and he's a demon on quick slants and crossing routes. Between that and having the speed and athleticism to be a serious vertical threat, I think he'd be a significant upgrade to Davis.

Likely not first day signings but I like WR Noah Brown, RB AJ Dillon, S K'won Wallace, DE AJE or DE Dorance Armstrong, DT Montravius Adams, CB Levi Wallace.

I don't think we can afford Dillion, but he is the exact type of #2 back the Bills need. A power runner who is a good receiver and very good pass blocker.

That is the modern NFL. DTs don't play 80/90% of the snaps anymore.

That's why drafting a 3T to backup Oliver doesn't necessarily mean he's going to be relegated to 20-30% of snaps. If he's the 2nd best interior pass rusher he's going to lining up next to big Ed is passing situations.

With that said, a true 1T to backup (hopefully) DeQuan Jones would be nice to have as well.

The only WRs in this year's class to run more routes this season were Rome Odunze and Ja'Lynn Polk. It's certainly not a lack of playing time. He just wasn't very productive. This doesn't just apply to him by the way; the same goes for Coleman, but Coleman isn't as nuanced a route runner or apparently as explosive an athlete as Mitchell is.

I thought you were referring to his total production... I also wonder if the amount of routes run is off for him, because as a team Texas threw fewer passes than you have him down for routes run?

  17. 25 minutes ago, DCOrange said:

I really can't get over Mitchell's combine. I don't know what to make of it. A guy that explosive with his size and route running ability should have been dominating college competition and instead he's near the bottom of the entire draft class in a lot of the production metrics. I just revisited his film for a third time a couple days ago and now I'm wondering if I have to do it again lol. I just don't get it.

I think because he missed a ton of games. But he also had tons of clutch TD's in big games, including the national championship winner.

I don't know after all the yelling, screaming and rage after the trade I think we'll all feel pretty bad about the traumatic brain injury that Bean would have had to have suffered to make this trade.

Beane would have to include himself in the deal, Beane for Poles, for it to make any sense.

  19. 1 hour ago, GunnerBill said:

There are way better options than him IMO. If it came to it, sure, but I'd much prefer most of the other guys.

The stories I have heard he is likely walking. Winfield won't hit the market. He is the best FA safety out there. The second best is Kamren Curl IMO. I'd love him. I'm hoping his reputation not being that big will keep him affordable but I don't know.

Imagine finding two late round safeties coming out of their first contract this year who only received moderate starting time over the last few seasons, and turning them both into all-pros?

It's still pretty remarkable what Poyer and Hyde became for the Bills. Let's find two more! :)
