The Bills' objective is not to race to the top with a good QB and then implode.   The objective is to be good for a long time.

The objective is to have a Brady, a Manning, a Brees, a Rodgers, and then to build around him.

The objective is to be a threat to win every year, not just to have a good QB and throw a bunch of talent together really fast to win, then let the good QB go because you don't want to pay him.

The model you describe is nice, but McBeane have been very clear that they are not building that way.   They are expecting their team to get better, year after year, and then to be on top for many years.

I'd argue that McBeane have been building that way (racing to the top). This team is built more through free agency/trades than the draft.

We just traded away our 2020 first round draft pick.

Our roster is older than most.

Of the top 14 cap hits on the team, only 2 of those players were drafted by the Bills (Tre and Dawkins). Look at all the  FAs we brought in this offseason (Addison, Jefferson, Butler, Klein). We went quantity over quality, but we were still big spenders.

We don't have a lot of long term contracts out there, but most of the contracts we have coming off the books in the next 2 years are going to go towards re-upping Josh.

We might not be "all in" to the extent that the Rams or Eagles were, but we're still in win now mode. Frankly, we should be. I'd gladly trade a year of cap hell for a superbowl victory.

We do not have the roster to win a Super Bowl this year. If you look back the last decade, elite QB or elite defense. Then maybe a Philly special once in a blue moon <= Which we do have the potential of having because we can, despite what your eyes tell you, beat anybody, any given Sunday.

So is your point just to complain as we keep winning? Which even if lacking true Super Bowl talent, is sort of what you need to do to have any shot at the SB. What would you do with yourself if we weren't winning? So we complain when we win and lose....Just for context I hope you understand the Bills have never won a Super Bowl. So if we complain when we win and lose, might not be very fun existence.

FYI, the Bills were a 4 point favorite against the Patriots. We won by 3, shocking outcome. If a subgroup of fans got overzealous from our fast start not having the last 20+ years to warn them never to get overzealous too early, shame on them.

Yes, that is what a championship team does. Which we aren't right now, but the Chiefs are, which I said. We just sort of found out this year that we have a Franchise QB. The fact that we are in Josh's 3rd year and are looking like we will likely win the division, which then opens up all sorts of possibilities should be very exciting. It's hard for me to be concerned about something that has never occurred once in our franchises history but your timer for concern is the third year of our QB's lifespan and the first year we can say with a decent amount of confidence he is a franchise QB. Yeesh.

Good QB's will be successful by their 3rd season in today's NFL, and should have their teams competing for a championship. Take a look at what these guys have done on their rookie contracts

Mahomes - regular season MVP, Superbowl MVP

    Jackson - regular season MVP

Watson - 2 pro bowls and 2 playoff appearances

Goff - 2 pro bowls and 2 playoff appearances. SuperBowl loss

Wentz - 1 Pro Bowl and 2 playoff appearances (injured for the first one) good chance he would've won MVP in 2017 without the injury. Eagles still went on to win the SB that year

Paying your 1st round draft pick QB $30mm+ under "fair value" gives teams a tremendous competitive advantage, and good teams will use that advantage to become Superbowl contenders. All 5 of the teams above were legit Superbowl contenders while their rookie QBs were on rookie deals.

After giving out mega contracts the Rams and Eagles went from "elite" to "borderline playoff contender". It remains to be seen what will happen to the Chiefs, Ravens, and Texans (the Texans have already imploded - they may not be a great example).

If the Bills are a borderline playoff contender while paying Josh $30mm+  under fair value, what the heck are we going to look like in 2022 and on?

We were effective at screens during the first and maybe second game this year. Then we reverted to the normal Bills inept screen game that has plagued this team for 20 straight years.

Were you asleep for the entire Chan Gailey era?

We were one of the best screen teams in the league with Jackson and Spiller. One of the very few strengths of that era

  4. Should we ask Chiefs fans if their 35-9 win over the Jets was "ugly" ?

That's what a championship caliber team does to a bottom feeder. They don't let a team like that hang around and only beat them by 1 score.

I'm not overly concerned about this last game against the Patriots.

What I'm concerned with is the season long trend that our Defense is bad. I'm also concerned with the 4 consecutive weeks of average/below average play from our offense.

With our franchise QB on a rookie contract we should absolutely be serious SB contenders. The fact that we're halfway through season #3 for Josh and we're looking like a one and done playoff team should be concerning to everyone.

Missing 4FGs? Hey, that’s on them! But never seen again Mariota + Jacoby WHO + the Boston College Starters?

Interesting. Count in my overall Stats, but clearly zippo a defining moment!

BEAT the Hawks this year with Russell or the Squeelers with Big Ben? Then, a gigantic, moving forward check mark gets put up!

That's the funny thing when we're talking "signature" wins. Obviously none of those really mean the Bills "arrived" even though they might meet your definition.

Fun factoid: The last 2 times the Bills beat the Patriots, the Patriots went on to win the SB  that year (2016 and 2014).

No. This is an excellent thread. And various people have defined their line in the sand for that purpose. Some, like me, set the bar high, demanding excellence. Others, like to go low... simply accepting low mediocrity bar after a generation of horrific play- like beating a winning team or even...”we’re not the JESTS or previously... the Clowns!”

NOOOOO! You never use the worst teams in the league in a given year, as a point of comparison, that you are better! NEVER... EVER!

Nor, is it,when you beat Scrooge McDuck, the 3rd. String QB of the Steelers. Beat KC with Paddy Mahomes, Beat Ben. Beat Brady! 🙄

”Signature Ws” are, at the highest level, did you beat the SB Champ of that year- something I highly doubt the Bills have done in a generation. But, something BOTH the Raiders and Cardinals May have accomplished already- in 2020!

Next? Did the Bills beat ANY Championship finalist of the same year? NO... again!

MY bar is the next in line. Did you beat any Playoff teams of the same year? PLUS, have you done this at an approx. 50% winning rate? The answer to that question, both pre and post McD is NO! And worse under McDermott!

They will certainly have opportunities against Seattle, Arizona, the 9ers and Pitt coming up.

Technically the Bills beat the 14-2 Superbowl winning Patriots* in 2016.

Jacoby Brisket was the starter with Tom Brady suspended....

We also beat the 12-4 Superbowl winning Patriots* in 2014.

In week 17 when they were resting starters....

I believe someone pointed this out, but we beat the Titans last year and they made the championship game. Although, that was a game that Marcus Mariota started and they missed 4 FGs....

Romo is #1. Unpopular take but Collinsworth is easily my #2.

Worst is Rich Gannon. Cannot stand him. Talks utter rubbish and always appears to have done minimal research on the teams he is watching. Oh yea and Aikman is easily the worst of the #1 team guys. If you enjoy watching a replay so that a color guy can just repeat the thing that was obvious from the original tv angle then Troy is your guy.

Took the words out of my mouth.

I'll add that I f**king HATED Dan Fouts. Thank goodness he was fired/retired.

    excellent wayne's world reference.

i've had some hilarious experiences over the years buying and selling homes.  you think you 've seen the craziest person and then nope there is someone crazier

oh yea. think about it like this....the house is the only one in the world with that land, features, location, etc etc.  literally the only one.  seller needs to execute original deal or else they're gonna pay up some money.  unless there is something with the buyers offer that wasnt completed. checks, signed docs etc. lied about their ability to actually close

That's pretty cool stuff. I guess it makes sense for the sellers if Tre's offer is for enough more $$ that it will cover the damages and then some.

Do you know what a ballpark figure for damages would be?

  9. 8 minutes ago, aristocrat said:

unless they didnt get their dd and earnest money in they have an executed deal. not sure what the selling agent is doing here.

only the buyers can get out in reality.  sellers are locked in as long as buyers execute the deal and are ok with the property.  i forget the term but essentially it means that in the entire world there is only one property like this one and therefore you are denying the buyers the chance at buying a unique property.

Can the sellers breach the contract with the original buyers and owe them damages ?

  10. 12 minutes ago, Logic said:

I don't know whether it was legal or not. It certainly didn't seem malicious or intentional. It's pretty hard to play DB in the league right now with the way the rules are written.

All that being said, it may well have stopped the Jets from scoring a TD in the waning moments. Instead of a 20+ yard gain and some momentum, it went down as a 15 yard play (which the Bills got 10 of back on an ensuing holding call) and Perriman leaving the game.

This hit is really not subjective, and with the way the rule is written this hit is a blatant penalty. There's a reason 3 flags came flying in from 3 different refs right after the hit. This is the exact type of play the NFL wants to remove from the game.

Nope. His shoulder contact was upper chest. The guy was making a catch. It's football. Micah's job is not to let him make a catch and congratulating him.

Highlighting a different section of the rule:

Prohibited contact against a player who is in a defenseless posture is:

    1. forcibly hitting the defenseless player’s head or neck area with the helmet, facemask, forearm, or shoulder, even if the initial contact is lower than the player’s neck

I can't believe we have people arguing that this is a bad call. It's a textbook penalty, and close to being suspension worthy. Hyde will probably get a fine

And if the NFL can't explain what the defender is supposed to do there, then it shouldn't be a rule.

Literally everyone is "defenseless" going to make a catch.

Keep the rule at hitting with your head or hitting at the opponent's head.  That's it.

In this situation, the defender can aim the tackle somewhere below the receivers neck/head area. Hyde could hit him in his midsection and would still have a good chance of dislodging the ball

This was a good call, and IMO the rule is a good thing for the game. Do we want more violent hits to players heads and more concussions?

  13. 4 minutes ago, TroutDog said:

Like I said, if that’s the rule, just get rid of the defensive backfield. Their helmets did not make contact.

So now we’re saying you can’t hit hard????

Don't get me wrong: I am 100% in support of protecting all players but hard hits in a violent game happen and should not be penalized.

I'd recommend reading the rule that I posted.

Prohibited contact against a player who is in a defenseless posture is:

    1. forcibly hitting the defenseless player’s head or neck area with the helmet, facemask, forearm, or shoulder, even if the initial contact is lower than the player’s neck

Hyde put his shoulder into the receivers neck/head area. It does NOT need to be helmet on helmet to be a penalty.

This was 100% the correct call. The NFL will probably add this hit to their video of examples of illegal hits...

  14. 18 minutes ago, TroutDog said:

In the replay there was no helmet to helmet contact: it was literally a text book hit. He led with his shoulder and worked to disrupt the receiver with a hard hit.

Should not have been a penalty. If it is, then the NFL should just get rid of the entire defensive backfield.

This is literally a textbook penalty.

    https://operations.nfl.com/the-rules/nfl-video-rulebook/defenseless-player/

    PLAYERS IN A DEFENSELESS POSTURE

It is a foul if a player initiates unnecessary contact against a player who is in a defenseless posture.

    1. Players in a defenseless posture are:
      1. A player in the act of or just after throwing a pass (passing posture)
      2. A receiver attempting to catch a pass who has not had time to clearly become a runner. If the player is capable of avoiding or warding off the impending contact of an opponent, he is no longer a defenseless player

Prohibited contact against a player who is in a defenseless posture is:

    1. forcibly hitting the defenseless player’s head or neck area with the helmet, facemask, forearm, or shoulder, even if the initial contact is lower than the player’s neck, and regardless of whether the defensive player also uses his arms to tackle the defenseless player by encircling or grasping him

He's clearly a defenseless player, and Hyde clearly put his shoulder into his helmet. 10 years ago that would've been a great defensive play. Nowadays that's a penalty 100% of the time.

We out gained them 422 yards to 190.  We never punted.  We had six sacks.  It was an absolutely dominating performance after thew woke up near the end of the first half.  The lack of TD's were fluky (should've won by at least 20) but this was a good team dominating a bad team.  I'm more encouraged today than discouraged.

I don't know if it's possible to overstate how bad the Jets are this season.

The 18 points we scored is the least amount of points scored against the Jets so far this season. The 10 points the Jets scored is the 3rd most they've put up in a game.

The Jets had the lead for more time in this game than the rest of the season combined.

I'm happy we won, and I'm happy the defensive was dominant in the 2nd half. But, this won't be good enough against a team that's playing at even an average level.

Bone headed penalties, terrible playcalling (4 runs by RB in the 1st half??), terrible clock management (including the Mcdermott special - using a defensive timeout for no apparent reason), multiple missed FGs, and 0-fer in the Red Zone.

That's really not gonna cut it unless we get to play the Jets every week.

KC won the SB last year with a defense worse than ours. Let's be real...offense wins super bowls now not defense.

By what measure was KC's defense from last year worse than the Bills DEF this year?

    2019 DEF rankings for KC

    Points against 7th

    Total yards allowed 17th

    Rushing yards allowed 26th

    Passing yards allowed 8th

The only reason the Bills defense isn't bottom 5 across all categories this season is that we've played the historically inept Jets twice out of seven games.

That opening drive was awful.  Besides that I could tolerate his play but I think he would admit he was a little off. Please Sean move Tremaine outside next year where he belongs and find a true Mike. This would allow us to return to the 4-3. Oliver should NEVER be forced to play 1 tech, EVER!  More Zimmer will help until Star returns next year. Ford & Winters are completely worthless. And Klein isn't worth commenting.

John Brown had a pretty brutal drop on 3rd down on the first drive. If he makes a routine catch there we would've had a first down

Overall I don't think Allen was as bad as the boxscore looks, or that Mahomes was as good as the boxscore looks.

Allen was under constant pressure and had to throw the ball away a number of times. There were a few bad drops, and a few inaccurate balls that his WR could have bailed him out on, and there were a few flat out terrible throws. Allen lost a lot of yards to defensive penalties (holding or DPI).

Mahomes had a very clean pocket for most of the night. He made some bad throws that his guys caught (Kelce catch for example). Not to say that Mahomes was bad, but he had a very pedestrian night.

Those are exactly the types of picks we could afford to give away. A 3rd+5th for an actual GOOD player on the defensive line.

We're in a championship window with Allen on a rookie contract. We should be going all in this year and next year.
