He comes across as a bit of a whiner, but it was an odd situation. He wasn’t all world by any means, but he seemed to be an adequate starter.
Agreed that he sounds like a whiner, but when you're a solid starter that gets benched for (undisclosed) reasons perhaps it's justified to whine about it.
I'm curious what McBeane would say about the situation. Did they bench him because of his play? Attitude? Was he out of shape ?
Definitely weird to give him a contract and then bench him. Strange thing to do at the time and I think it only looks worse in hindsight with the Bills O-line struggles and Spain being a reliable starter for Cincy.

I think Murray's terrible performance in his first playoff game at the end of his 3rd season is cause for concern. I don't see anyone paying him over 40 million per year in a long term contract (as opposed to year-to-year as a franchise QB) until they get a better read on whether he can up his game in the playoffs.
The other issue with Murray is that looking at his stats he has not improved over his first three seasons. His TD pass numbers, TD/INT ratio and passing yards appear to have plateaued. He has not thrown for 30 TD's yet nor has he thrown for over 4,000 yards. From a stat & eye test Murray is similar to Dak Prescott but 6 inches shorter.
Murray has shown year over year improvement in completion % and YPA even if total yards and TD have been relatively flat. This is reflected in his QB Rating:
2019 - 87.4
2020 - 94.3
2021 - 100.6
We can argue over how important QBR is as a stat, but there's little doubt he's improved as a QB.
It's a little ironic you're comparing him to Dak Prescott when Dak has a 40mm AAV contract. If you think Murray isn't worth 40mm+ what do you think he is worth? 35mm? 30mm?
Let's compare that to MLB
There's a total of 8 players (excluding pitchers) making 30+mm AAV. Only 2 of those guys are making 35mm+ with the most lucrative MLB contract coming in at 35.6mm.
From a $$ standpoint it would be ludicrous for Murray to switch sports at this time. He would have to be one of the very best players in MLB to even approach what an average QB makes in the NFL (and Murray has already shown to be above average).

Murray would be much better off in a non-contact sport. Pitch counts, over a 4 hour game, with plenty of rest between games? Sounds like less overall injury risk for a game in which height doesn’t matter as much. Also MLB players make more money on average AND their contracts are guaranteed. Sounds like a no brainer.
Average contract doesn't apply when we're talking about a #1 overall pick QB that has 3 solid-to-great seasons under his belt. Spotrac already has his market value at 43 mm.
Unless he has a devastating injury and/or his play falls off a kliff he's going to be making bank on his next contract.
If he goes to MLB he'll have a few years on a rookie contract and after that he'd have to be literally the best player in MLB history to even approach what he will make as a QB.
Not really buying the injury risks when he's missed 3 NFL games total in 3 seasons. MLB is less violent than the NFL, but there's still plenty of injury risks. Sliding into bases ain't no joke, and there's a huge toll on muscles/joints by throwing a ball or swinging a bat as often as they do.

And lots of teams picking at the top, year after year, remain trash heaps.
People need to remember that teams do NOT have the draft order correctly analyzed...so there is not necessarily a huge correlation between draft spot and talent of player received, especially the further you get from the very top of the draft.
If NFL teams knew how to assess talent properly, Tyreek Hill wouldn't have been taken 165th overall, or have been passed over by every team in the league four--and some teams five--times.
For example.
Tyreek went 165th overall because of his character, not his talent.

This one is still a head scratcher in terms of Beane restructured his deal.
And unless he works some real magic in some sort of trade or restructure again we are almost stuck with a guy who it's clearly time to move on from.
The restructure would have worked out had Star not used COVID as an excuse to opt out of 2020. We would've been able to cut him this offseason with very little dead cap. His opt out pushed his contract back a year and really screwed us over

I had a good chuckle at this part
21. Incredibly, this was not Mr. Flores’ first sham interview that was held only in an effort to comply with the Rooney Rule. Indeed, in 2019 Mr. Flores was scheduled to interview with the Denver Broncos. However, the Broncos’ then-General Manager, John Elway, President and Chief Executive Officer Joe Ellis and others, showed up an hour late to the interview. They looked completely disheveled, and it was obvious that they had drinking heavily the night before. It was clear from the substance of the interview that Mr. Flores was interviewed only because of the Rooney Rule, and that the Broncos never had any intention to consider him as a legitimate candidate for the job. Shortly thereafter, Vic Fangio, a white man, was hired to be the Head Coach of the Broncos.
I am not a lawyer, but I don't see how Flores could win this. Unless people in Miami/NYG ownership were stupid enough to send an email saying "We're not hiring Flores because he's black". Teams are free to hire/fire whomever they want.
I wonder if the league's response to this would be to nix the Rooney Rule ?

I'm curious where Mahomes would be without the 2nd half/OT of Bengals.
As far as the graph goes
1) PFF grades for the Y axis ?
2) Circle size is supposed to represent # of plays? How does Jimmy G have such a small circle with 3 games ?

TD would have counted and the 15 yards would've been enforced on either the PAT or the kickoff
ARTICLE 9. DEAD BALL FOUL AND FOUL BETWEEN DOWNS
A Dead Ball Foul is a foul that occurs in the continuing action after a down ends, or a taunting foul that occurs at any time. The penalty for a Dead Ball Foul is enforced from the succeeding spot, and the down counts.

I 100% disagree that there is a "massive difference." For starters, 3 timeouts vs. 1 is significant. And KC traveled roughly the same distance, in just a few more seconds. They were down to the NE 20 with just under 20 seconds left (had they had one of those extra timeouts that they did against us, they would have called one and probably won w/ a TD).
The situations are almost exactly comparable.
What's your definition of "massive difference" ? KC traveled 48 yards in 16 seconds vs Patriots. Those "few more seconds" would've literally changed the outcome of the Bills game.
It's not that uncommon to see ~30 second FG drives to end games. It's unprecedented to see a 13 second FG drive like that
-
He's a great player, but no I wouldn't want to trade for him.
We'd lose out on draft capital and have to give him a massive contract.
If we're chasing after WRs I'd rather try to sign UFAs like Godwin or Adams.

Belichick actually gave up a very similar drive in the 2018 AFCCG. Mahomes went 50 yards in 18 seconds, 2 passes just like our game. The only difference was that NE won the coin toss.
BB has had some head-scratchers. Not sure how many remember that he went for it on 4th & 13 in FG range in the '07 SB against the Giants. Benching Welker for the 1st quarter against the Jets in the playoffs, which probably cost them another SB chance. His defense against us in the 2nd regular regular season game this year was inexplicable, and he didn't adjust. And then his defense last week was absolutely terrible.
He's a great coach - but not infallible.
Similar in that it was the last drive of regulation I guess.
There's a massive difference between getting the ball at your own 31 with 32 seconds (1 TO left) compared to getting the ball at your own 25 with 13 seconds (3 TO left) and needing 3 points to tie.
I'll also note that Mahomes made 2 exceptional plays vs Patriots, and 2 absolutely routine plays vs Bills.

I agree with most of your list there.
Think I'd swap O-line and CB importance (O-line to 2 and CB to 3).
I'd remove TE depth from the list and replace it with WR depth (assuming Beasley & Sanders are gone). TE2 is just not important in today's NFL and if both WRs leave we'll need someone after Diggs/Davis.
-
We never covered Hill & Kelce effectively anyway. If they're both going to shred us regardless maybe we're better off committing an extra guy to spying on Mahomes to take away his legs on the 3rd and longs.

I think it's a little ironic how much Sullivan gets dumped on around here with how many "Fire X,Y, and Z" posts we see after every loss. Yes, he's critical of our favorite team, but he's also fair. This article is no exception.

Can you fair catch a kick that is bouncing along the ground?
If they flop on top of the ball and "give themselves up" or just kneel it down it'll function the same as a fair catch. Maybe 1-2 seconds off the clock

I’m really wondering if McDermott had a full-on brain freeze and thought the Chiefs were either out of time outs or were down by more than 3… something went seriously wrong. There are high school football coaches who would’ve coached better situationally there. It is shocking.
Different sports obviously but it reminds me of this
Bills meltdown is probably worse given we took timeouts to setup our defense on those last 2 plays

There's not much we can do about LB next year.
Edmunds active cap hit is 12.7mm and if we cut/trade him his dead cap is 12.7mm
Milanos active cap hit is 10mm and if we cut/trade him his dead cap is also 12.7mm (or 9.2mm post June 1st)

I actually like the non-squib kick decision.
If your opponent has the ball at their own 25 yard line with 13 seconds left down by 3, you have like a 99.9% chance of winning the game.
All you have to do is not give up 50 yards on 2 plays.

It wasn't that Bojo had a punt blocked- it's that he muffled a hold on an easy field goal that blocked.
Haack had a terrible game a few weeks ago and got ripped. Seemed kind of silly to get a punter whose specialty was holding. However here we are- maybe Bean was right and knew something after all!?
Let's see tonight- Go Bills!
Couldn't disagree with you more. Bojo had the perfect hold on the blocked FG. The problem was the untouched 49er player.

Cowboys have made the playoffs 11 times since '96 without making it to the conference finals.
11 playoff appearances without making the conference finals is the longest such streak in the NFL

To me Super Bowl or bust would only apply in extreme circumstances.
It would have to be a combination of the teams window closing (aging QB, bad contracts, aging coach, trading draft picks) and high expectations (think '07 Patriots).
Doesn't apply to the Bills unless we're extrapolating expectations from that beat down against the Patriots and ignoring the regular season.
-
Does the Athletic not grade punters ?
Haack deserved a straight F and didn't even make their bottom 5.
Even if you want to curve his grade based on the conditions he still deserved a bottom 5 grade.
Aaron Rogers in the Playoffs

Aaron Rodgers led his team to TWO lead-taking FGs in the final 1:30 in a playoff game against the Cowboys only a few years ago.
Including this ridiculous play on a 3rd and 20 with 12 seconds left:
Elway needed a ridiculously stacked team to win his back to back superbowls, and he had a straight up terrible SB against the Packers.
