The lack of cap space is entirely on Beane's watch, so you can't exactly give him a pass there. Knox is taking up $14.5mil to block, Samuel is taking $9mil to sit, Bass is taking a cool $4.6mil to watch his replacement be just as effective for 1/5 of the price... Oh and then there's Von's $15mil of dead waste. And all teams have some albatross on the books, for sure. But all of those contracts were a bit sus at the time they happened, and then aged like vinegar since then. I don't blame Beane for not making a move today, but there's plenty to criticize in the last few off seasons that got us here.

Old and dying Shaq Thompson was playing like our best linebacker, so that's a big loss and now the middle of our D is even more exposed. Safety and WR are the trendy needs, but we really need to get bigger, faster and much much more reliable health wise at the LB spot.

They had 5 winning seasons and 3 postseason appearances, despite changing over coaching staffs at least what.. three times? There's enough middling success in there that unless he was on super bad terms with the owner, I can understand waiting until now with the wheels all the way off the wagon for them to make the move.
