I would add, Fez -- train them, but don't train them all of the little ins and outs. You always want to be the only guy who knows everything. In this day and age, unfortunately, you need all the job security you can get. As for the bellyaching, call me when you put in half days working construction and stone walls. Rain or shine. Slam your finger b/w two stones? Too bad, work on. Some days, I can't wait to find a desk job.

[OT] Arrested for going topless in public!

I thought that was Jim McNally. Bottom row, second in from left. I don't have your experience w/ ya-yas, but I'd say those are B's. -
The IOC is Anti-American
UConn James replied to The Hornell Kid's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Plus, they have to build a hella-expensive stadium exclusively for baseball/softball that will be absolutely useless to countries other than US, Japan or Canada (and then again, there's the Expos' Olympic Stadium) after the Games are done. Why waste that money? Anyone who's any good in other countries is in America in the pros or farm teams, and therefore ineligible. Like someone else said, if it's good baseball you want, wait for and watch the baseball World Cup. You don't get good baseball in the Olympics. -
The WGR report w/ a link on the frontpage includes a Jags person saying they're intrigued by TH's small cap number and that they'll get an extra push out of him b/c he's in the final year of his contract.... Well, if they're sure he'll want to stay there (he's from Florida, etc.) then it's not much of a gamble and provides extra motivation to do well. I don't know 'bout other people, but I'd want to get my potential starting RB in asap to start learning the playbook before camp started. Esp. for someone w/ a reported learning disability. Hearing about Taylor's knee, a 3rd-to-possible-2nd looks to be a fair, mutually beneficial trade.

Terrorism takes center stage again
UConn James replied to Rich in Ohio's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
What I have a problem with are people who lash out at an omission based on time/space consideration. Not everyone is FFS. You made it perfectly clear that you thought the guy's statement was wrong, wrong, wrong. When you call him a coward, pu**y, commie, etc. (for a statement that is empirically realist in nature, that you can never really stop terrorism 100%), I think assuming that you disagreed with the guy is more than reasonable. -
Bills want a conditional 2nd for Travis
UConn James replied to MadBuffaloDisease's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think Jim McNally showed this year that he doesn't need the big name prospects to mold a good player. If JM wanted a highly rated OT in the 2nd or 3rd, I think TD would've gotten him one instead of nabbing a WR and TE. I also think TD knew beforehand and learned even more from the MW pick that picking high up in the draft doesn't guarantee a single thing other than that you'll be paying up the nose for someone who's got a 1/3 chance of being any good as a pro. -
Terrorism takes center stage again
UConn James replied to Rich in Ohio's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
You're the one who lashed out with a charge of cowardice when the guy said that we must all learn to accept that terrorism in this world will happen, and that we need to deal with it (I don't know the context of what he said otherwise, and that's not what was being spoken about). That, to me and other readers of English, means that you didn't agree with him, and that you don't accept that a certain level of terrorism will happen. I didn't put words in your mouth. You did. -

LONDON IS UNDER ATTACK
UConn James replied to nick in* england's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I tried saying this same thing in the "center stage" thread, and was told by Wacka, RKfast and Mr. Clutch that terrorism aparrently can be stomped out 100 percent and that we shouldn't get used to it and prepare for it. Ask them, they'll tell you. -
No dancing with the stars threads??
UConn James replied to Corp000085's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
She managed to stay on despite really bad dancing, and won for two reasons -- T and A. That, and a lot of eyeshadow. If you really look at her, she's not that beautiful. I thought the girl who danced with the former NKOTB was much hotter. O'Hurley was great throughout, and he was funny as hell. -
US Terror Level Alert raised
UConn James replied to stuckincincy's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Tom Ridge is on record saying that the color-codes are very ineffective for relaying any useful information for citizens about the extent of what is going on and what will be happening. There aren't enough levels, and there needs to be more specific info. What will happen at Red? Will everyone be forced to stay inside or be shot? Evacuate to Minnesota? Saying "Extreme Risk" is really passive information/instruction for citizens. -
Terrorism takes center stage again

Where did I advocate doing a Bledsoe-accordian Take-the-sack mentality? Or that we don't need to go on no-holds O to get these people? Point that out to me. I simply said that we should expect these things to happen, and to be prepared for them, mentally and in our physical response. You're ready to promise on your honor that in the future, there will be no attacks? It's called being a realist and realizing these #$%ers aren't going to stop, and that, yes, they will get through sometimes. I don't know what other context the prof was speaking in, but he was right on the point quoted above. People around here really need to stop filling in gaps and omissions (omitted for the reason that every post can't be 75 paragraphs long, unless you're FFS) for themselves while reading. -
Terrorism takes center stage again
UConn James replied to Rich in Ohio's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
What's incorrect about that? You think the Islamists are magically going to stop? They'll succeed in their aims every now and then. We need to get used to that, and be prepared for it. Are you unfamiliar with how WWI started? Do that and get ready for more warfare with weapons (this time, goading a war with WMD) that severely outpace the knowledge of how to use them effectively and in a way that won't bite you in the bippy. We don't need a repeat of WWI with WMD mixed in. I like living on the surface of the Earth. -

Like how every Republican tried to 'reign in' Delay and Santorum when they were foaming at the mouths? So every Senator is supposed to book air time and do press releases when one of their own says somrthing stupid? How about the ones who just don't care enough about a few idiots to respond? Man, there's not enough time in the day! -
LONDON IS UNDER ATTACK
UConn James replied to nick in* england's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Each attack only confirms that hunkering down in defense cannot work entirely, and anything that would be effective would chop away at our liberties. I don't accept this. I've been coming around the past few months on the need for an effective no-holds offense. The Western world can't just sit back and say, 'Oh well, more are coming anyway.' It makes some difference, at least. -
LONDON IS UNDER ATTACK

Here, there's Sec. 2385 in the criminal code "Advocating the Overthrow of the Government By Force or Violence." Minimum 20 years on top of any other charges. -
Are you including a section for 'issue ads' paid for by special interests (and who they were wink-wink-hint-hint supporting)?

I wouldn't be able to say, as I've only been to UConn games in the college milieu. And that was during the past several years as they moved into D-I A. Sad to say, but that game day atmosphere of which you speak was much better before they moved to the new 40,000-seat stadium off-campus, about 30 minutes away, two years ago. At the old Memorial Stadium on-campus here were the old traditions of floats, parades to the stadium, students getting just rowdy enough, lots of tailgating and the smells of barbeque smoke all around on a warm October day, a really close and cozy view of the field.... these things are pretty much gone. The scene at the new stadium is pretty sedate. Some of it caused by fiat. No gas-grilling tailgating allowed (I think they allow electric grills, whoopdeedoo), no throwing footballs allowed, etc., etc. Maybe it's just like a wife who won't let anyone eat in the living room with the new white rug.... Maybe in several years it will be better as more people become bigger fans and improvise in the tailgating strategem. The U is really trying to push Tradition, and they don't seem to understand that tradition doesn't come forcefully, it just happens by itself.

LONDON IS UNDER ATTACK
UConn James replied to nick in* england's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
ABC is saying that the time of the attack from a cell phone recovered in an unexploded bomb was 8:49 a.m. Familiar number? NYC and Madrid. Hang in there, Nick. Our thoughts are with you 'English types' today. -
Spot on. We're in the era of many outlets being either administrative/establishment lapdogs (this is pretty inherent, as most quotes come from some kind of Officialdom), some that are attack dogs, and some that reasonably balance the two. I think the last sentence is the most telling. Words just fly by people in this era. Previously, people actually sought out information and actively participated. That continues to change as a smaller percentage (but actually, hard numbers of subscribers are up) of people read their news. Big difference in the quality of TV and print, too.

Am I missing something, or didn't W&B make their bones by protecting their source's name 'til the end? They denied that it was Felt for several hours after the VF article leaked, until they confirmed that he did approve release of his name. If you promise anonymity as a reporter and don't honor it, even if that means you spend time in the clink, you pack up your things at your desk and turn in your reporter's notebook at the door. Your fellow reporters will hate you for doing in their newspaper and craft, and no one will talk to you again. Seriously, man, you don't need to go to J-school to know that.
