mularkey -- what are your thoughts?
UConn James replied to eball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Something I really liked about him last year was when Ralph started griping in the papers, MM basically said 'Respectfully, Mr. Wilson, shut up and let me do my job my way.' And then he did it. A lot of other rookie coaches might have caved. -
Bush tells why he won't meet Sheehan
UConn James replied to Dr. K's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I don't doubt that, but the statement struck me as incredibly callous, even for him. Like "I sincerely apologize for that remark" callous. But he doesn't do things like that, ever; admitting you were wrong is weakness. There's a way to hold your position and still be courteous. Most people have to learn this by age 6. -
Bush tells why he won't meet Sheehan
UConn James replied to Dr. K's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Then there's Paul Hackett, who ran for Congress in a Repub-thick Ohio district (and lost 52-48) by really lashing into Bush and the reasons and execution of the war. He served one tour, and despite his own feelings, it's his job and he's going back in November. -
Bush tells why he won't meet Sheehan
UConn James replied to Dr. K's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
There's the Neocon definition of compassion, which is a quality that you say you have while you're giving a speech. And then there's the actual definition of compassion, which is a quality that requires real action. If you remember Marv's quote in this vein.... -
Bush tells why he won't meet Sheehan
UConn James replied to Dr. K's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I understand that. What I don't understand is how Bush's PR people could let him utter a sentence like, "Yaknow what, I've got a life to live" when the thing being talked about is, Mrs. Sheehan's son doesn't. -
101 things NOT to do on a first date
UConn James replied to Nick in RaChaCha's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
33. OK, this actually happened to me.... Don't wait for three hours in the library for a study date then, when you get up from your notes b/c you figured "What the !@#$? I'm here," and look over the partition, there she is, then still proceed to the downstairs to study.* *'Study'ing to consist of two phone calls from her boss (she was a stripper), informing that her anti-depressant makes her "get all wet" driving down the highway and she just wanted to cheat on her boyfriend (who she suspected was cheating on her), and finding out that she was really, really stupid. -
Cool news. Purdue's put more people into space than Eli Lilly.

More Greatness from the Dean
UConn James replied to Rich in Ohio's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
The latest word, from administration officials no less, are now pretty resigned to the fact that Iraq will have an Islamic Republic in which the clerics will be the judges according to the Islamic Sharia, and they will have the final say in how many rights women are granted. Dean is grandstanding for sure, it's his job to be inciteful just like it is for the RNC chairman, but when have you known strict Islamic law to be beneficial to women's rights? The constitution isn't done yet, so it's early to be discussing it, but the whispers coming out aren't that inspiring. -
Eric Moulds on the hot seat this year?
UConn James replied to 1billsfan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Moulds will be here for a long while. One thing, tho, is that JP does seem to be connecting better/has better timing with Lee Evans. I fully expect this to even out as he gets more PT. -
Those guys played for the Bills?
-
Wray and Gilchrist.... '64 AFL champs. They would've beaten the Packers, too.
-
And for afterwards.... That seat looks just wide enough to give one an atomic wedgie.

Like I said, RL's problems are much more power-related than they have to do with 'accuracy.' As I think back, most of his missed kicks were generally on target; they just either didn't reach or didn't have enough speed/velocity/oompf in them to be in the right spot when they should have. If this game and the coaches' reports are any indication, it sounds like he improved his leg strength or tweaked his kicking technique to get that extra oompf.

"I regret letting Michael Jackson free"
UConn James replied to stevestojan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Is that actually what they did; interview to get 12 people who know nothing about MJ? If so, the prosecution was as dumb as they looked, and people are bending over backward and twisting like a pretzel in the definition of a fair trial. Serving as a juror should not require that you live under a rock or never read or watch the news, just that you have an open mind based on the evidence that is presented during the trial. I'm just wondering if this (and their actual juror votes, which is pretty sick) isn't a ploy to sell their books. 'Oh! Now I think he was guilty! I was bamboozled!' Pretty much every other juror tell-all angle has been tapped. -

70. "No, I don't have a job. I live in the basement and I'm building an exact replica of the flying saucer that landed in the backyard three years ago. When I'm not looking at online porn, that is." -
Why don't you want touchbacks? On punts, that's correct. On KOs, that was actually one of the selling points for Mike Nugent, besides his clutch FGs, b/c he could boom them right through the end zone sometimes. Why would you not want your opponent starting at the 20 every time compared to the average KO return yardage of what, 21-23 yards? Nevermind that it saves your STs from injury or prevent the 'Music City Forward Lateral Miracle' from ever happening.

Terrell Owens is going to get tan
UConn James replied to stevestojan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Word is that he was at the Ravens-Falcons game last night. Link He's back in camp on 17 August, but I really don't see how his antics (and his antics to come) have inspired confidence from his teammates and QB. More or less, he's burned all of his bridges in Philly. And most other teams probably don't want to deal with his big contract and more importantly, his schtick. -
The NFL GameBook has RL's kickoffs listed as getting to the 5, 1, -2, and 4 yard lines. Vouchsafe that this is better than his KOs last year that made it to the 10 on a good kick. His problem the past two seasons have been more power-related than accuracy. So this is a good sign. The question is, Can he take this into the season? Or maybe he stopped using this craptacular kicking tee. What the company claims as the 17" advantage can bootstrap you when there's a human there holding the ball 11" away and he's usually hunched over the ball.

Should there be a 2nd Memorial day instituted
UConn James replied to Adam's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I don't see why this can't be done for 2 minutes per week. Hey! Let's call it the "Two Minutes Hate." Orwellian society indeed. Here's your Victory Gin, guys. Drink up! -
I think you're thinking of Drew Henson, who started 8 games there, yet received a lot of hype and is now battling for the backup job to Bledsoe in Big D. Brady started 24 games after being behind Greise and Henson in the bulk of his first two years. Not so disimilar to how J.P. was behind Ramsey in his first two years at Tulane. Haven't heard anything on the local channels about Brady's injury. Belichick's mum on most things, but it is nice that he's not getting time in at OC (he's taking on Weis' job this year, right?) w/ Brady out there. IMO, BB finally bit off more than he'll be able to chew.

GOP/Independent Voter Registration Opinions
UConn James replied to Terry Tate's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
For the only positions that are determined by a nation-wide election rather than by states, districts or cities/towns, I'd be all right with it just for Pres/VP primaries. If states want to do their other ones on a different day, that's their prerogative. As it stands now, voters in states like NH and Iowa with super-early primaries have a much more powerful vote than you or I. -
GOP/Independent Voter Registration Opinions
UConn James replied to Terry Tate's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I know this is going to shock you, but I am a registered Republican. Pretty much for the same fiscal reasons, and also extending to the local level. That is, until the Republican caucus a few weeks ago when they decided to nominate the Dem first selectman for the Rep ticket(!), after he raised the town budget by 15% and pushed it through after FIVE cherry-picking referendums, finally settling at a 10% increase, the last one held on a non-traditional voting day. Despite all the guff and fire and brimstone, they are no different spending-wise, so for the last few national elections, I've voted Dem simply b/c they're not forcing social/religious ideology on everyone and allow people to make their own choices. I too, have been mulling for the past few years whether to go Independent. Our primaries don't really make a damn of difference, so that makes it a little easier. What we really need in this country is one set primary day in, say, late July or early August, where every state votes at once b/c a few states have most of the influence in determining who runs and who has to drop out. Leading to those few states getting undo attention and future spending promises.
