Ladies and Gentlemen, The 2006 Darwin Awards
UConn James replied to /dev/null's topic in Off the Wall Archives
One of the unrecovered climbers was a goalie on the UConn soccer team in the late '80s. They were caught unprepared in a massive weeklong snowstorm that came on suddenly. And unless they were seriously laden with provisions, they wouldn't have made it anyway. And that they went out of the snow cave in such conditions trying to get help for their friend... it's probably more than the average person would do. Climbing a mountain assumes a certain level of risk and a fair amount of courage/craziness but not near as much risk as driving over an RPG or smoking while covered in flammable material. I was on Mt. Washington once when a thick fog came in, temp dropped and it started snowing in Sept. I got a ride down with a charitable soul. How about James Kim, who ultimately saved his family when they got stuck on the road in OR? A tragic result of having unexpected climates foisted upon you is not Darwin-worthy. And death in trying to save a person(s) you love is not dishonorable. On the contrary. -

Didn't say he was a thug. Hanging out in those kind of places, you gain enemies by just sitting there. It's just the ethos when you combine all of those factors --- money, alcohol, sex, testosterone --- and things can get really stupid, really fast. I would be surprised if it was someone who had some manner of run-in, real or imagined in this person's head, with DW. People don't usually kill people they don't know. -
In that case, get back to work, slacker!

Linky. I was paying more for dial-up than I do now for DSL. Plus, I cancelled the newspaper and get it online for free. Get with the program, Ann!

state funerals are interesting!!!

Just watch out for errant golf balls at the burial! I mean --- all that grass, flags at the tee, a 3'x6' hole, and a giant crowd.... -
Guilty as charged, your honor. But yes, the blogs were just not utilized enough to warrant them. Most people put their LAMP stuff on 'Off the Wall' anyway.... and that seemed to sort itself out.

I'm not saying it should have happened, tho some here are reacting as if I did. And I'm also not saying everyone needs to be a member of the Clever family, but I think this and many other incidents like it show safety requires prudence. This is not a kind or safe world --- violent crime is increasing again after years of dropping off (a phenomenon that I would say tracks along with world events) --- and it's sad that some of these millionaire kids take the risks they do. Showing off your money, an atmosphere of drinks/drugs/sex/etc., getting involved in club scenes, and with people who are less than savory characters.... Don't try to tell me this decreases the risks involved with having that target on your back. It is a shame. -
Help pick a team to root for in the playoffs....

I say N'awlins. They've been down for so long as a franchise.... And it'd be a great thing for that region. -

Hooray for the nightclub culture of professional athletes! I'm truly sorry for his family, but how many times does this have to happen before someone thinks staying out at all hours in these places might be a bad idea? They tend not to attract people of high manners. When you're an athlete making millions, you have a target on your back for all manner of people --- women who see $$ and men who think they need to show how tough they are. It may be a party-poop, but you need to not put yourself in those situations. Which makes me all the more happy that Marv likes 'character' guys who keep out of this stuff. Nothing good happens after 1 a.m. -
Postgame comments Willis, if you think you did your part by getting 23 yards, you have a serious misunderstanding of what a RB needs to do. I hope you and Rosenh-ass do hold out. And I hope we draft a kid who actually wants to play football, who doesn't dance behind the line, gets 1,500 yards, and Marv sends you an email with a CC: to DR simply saying, " YOU."
-
Speechless why? Name one RB who didn't lose time to injury this year. 'Well, if that play didn't get called back Willis would have....' And if my uncle wore a wig, he'd be my aunt. It's all a bunch of excuses. He got what he got and did what he did, and he will be judged on that by the people whose opinions matter. Six TDs on the year may put stars in your eyes, but it doesn't impress me, and based on his comments, I doubt it impresses Marv. He signed that first contract, did he not? TD didn't put a gun to his head, did he? If he wants more scratch, he needs to STFU and make more plays.

990 yards 3.8 yards/carry + 6 TDs -------------------- #23 rusher in NFL Come on, Rosenass. Make a stink about Willis needing to be paid more. I guess one line of argument might be that, in addition to being the starting RB, he was an on-field member of the Buffalo Bills dance team.

I dunno. It's a former president --- someone who has worn that heavy crown, as Shakespeare wrote --- of his own party that's finally allowing his view to be aired. To me, either he should have said this publicly back then or he shouldn't have allowed it to be aired. To be critical of the Current Occupant's decisions only after he has the burden of defending his views removed is a bit of a cheap shot. And it's also in stark contrast to what GHWB said a couple of months back that I read in Time magazine when I was at the dentist. This was about the same time as he got all weepy at the speech for Jeb (and you could so tell he was also referencing GWB in it too). The article said he was getting weepy talking about No. 43's decisions and then the man spent about three column inches saying that he wouldn't speak about what he thinks of Iraq, and that it wouldn't be good for his son, and that, no, by gum, I'm not going to tell you how I would have done things differently b/c it wouldn't be good for him.... That whole thing was very odd. "Pugnacious" is even-handed? Cheney developed a "fever" about terrorism and Iraq? In that entire piece, Ford first said how great the guy was, then proceeded with a swift jab. Ford was a man who knew and practiced great decorum, and keeping what you really felt very close to the vest. He almost cut the "long national nightmare" line b/c he thought it was too strong.
-
That's not stopping Ford himself from bad-mouthing certain goofball presidents. Ford disagreed with Bush on invading Iraq

The 'Muslims shouldn't be in Congress' debate: '07
UConn James replied to UConn James's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
You're actually using the word "serious" when describing WND? And, you really only need one brush to paint the national parties. If the GOP actually wanted to be taken seriously rather than play to their Crazy-Baptist-Minister base, they would have come up with something better than the output of the 109th Congress. That this comes from the state where George Allen thought he could get some chuckles and pick up votes by being for macaca before he was against it doesn't surprise me. Virgil's crap has been floating for a couple of weeks now, and the right is dead silent. Not what I heard.... And so what? The very-same Bible most Congresscritters take their oaths on has a passage that mandates they must kill any person who works on Sunday, among other niceities. -
Why the Baltimore Game Still Matters
UConn James replied to CosmicBills's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I, too, call bull on this. Let's look at the list of improvements by losing to get a higher draft pick: A) Get a guy at #10 who has just as much chance to bust as a guy at #24. B) Pay $15M more in guaranteed salary-cap-hit money for the privilege. C) More difficult to sign --> late to camp --> behind the 8-ball --> lose an entire year. I will continue 'til my dying day describing how this philosophy sucks. -
and the invading Muslim horde. Freedom of religion (as long as you're a Christian). Could someone remind Virgil that Ellison was, in fact, democratically elected? And that taking the oath has no formal rules for hand placement on inanimate objects, biblical or no? This is a sorry state of affairs for the GOP and what they've become and how the national party left me behind about 10 years ago. Flag-burning, gay-baiting and Grade-A bigotry is about all they have left.

A Few Thoughts About The Game And The Bills
UConn James replied to Bill from NYC's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It'll be nice to go into next season and not have finding the QB be THE main concern for the coaches. I wouldn't give Peters up for the #1 pick. A) Conjuring Donald Rumsfeld here, after two seasons where he's shown his mettle, JP is a known known. You go drafting a kid (who is it, Joe Thomas?), even at #1, and it's an unknown known (or is that a known unknown?). B) A #1 pick costs about $30M in guaranteed money before he's played a snap. Peters' contract is a veritable steal. As a close example of the past two subpoints, see: Robert Gallery. Don't apologize for that, Bill. Three daughters?!? You poor man! I'm not either. We all figured this was going to be a nothing year, and it turned out that the team learned a lot and found answers to lots of the holes, especially through the draft and UDFAs. Teams that have good drafts see it really, really pay off about 3-4 years later. Have a few good drafts and you're a SB contender. Let's all hope that Marv and Modrak keep up the good work, and that DJ gets better at managing the clock and making smart choices on 4th downs. -

Witness details puppy's final moments
UConn James replied to Tux of Borg's topic in Off the Wall Archives
That is correct. 10 percent of the population is responsible for 90 percent of the crime. But if we actually kept the 10 percent in jail where they belong, there wouldn't be a need for so many judges and lawyers. Parole, plea bargains and sentence leniency is job security. What I would do to these two sh--heels.... And I would not feel one iota of guilt. -
Coach Belichick - a fine human being
UConn James replied to Catholic Guilt's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I wouldn't be so fast to make a statement like that. As a general rule of thumb, the judiciary in this country gives the wifey the mine, and the hubby the shaft. Also, Pooj, it was documented that BB would send limos to this woman's house since back when he was coaching for the Giants.
