The death rate from covid-19 among people older than 65 is 15%, and something like 80% of the 200+K deaths from Covid-19 are among people over the age of 65. At 74 and obese, Covid Donnie likely suffers from some common chronic conditions that affect the elderly like hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, COPD, liver disease, etc that make him very vulnerable to coronavirus complications.

Trump, Melania Test Positive for COVID 19
SoTier replied to The Frankish Reich's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Trump does not deserve compassion because he has shown none to anyone. His handling of the coronavirus since February has demonstrated that he's a sociopath who will sacrifice anything or anybody for his own personal gratification. His politicizing of precautions to prevent/limit the spread of the coronavirus has unnecessarily brought death and suffering as well as economic disaster to millions of Americans. His response to the pandemic as POTUS has been reprehensible. Most of those 200k people who died from covid-19 didn't deliberately play Russian roulette with the virus as Trump has done for months. Trump isn't a Covid-19 victim but rather a victim of his own stupidity and arrogance. -

My reference was to being "lucky" was about the original hiring of Beane as GM in 2017 after Whaley was fired. Beane's resume didn't really suggest that he'd be as astute at team building as he's been. His background as assistant GM in Carolina was mostly involving personnel and logistics, yet he and the people who answer to him have proven to have good eyes for talent. That suggests that Beane's real strength is finding good people -- like scouts, coaches, etc -- and letting them do their thing but it wouldn't necessarily be a talent that would necessarily stand out from the experience he'd had before he became the Bills GM.

Trump, Melania Test Positive for COVID 19
SoTier replied to The Frankish Reich's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
The chances of catching Covid-19 and dying from it are less than the chances of the same from the flu -- at least according to Trump supporters. Of course, that's if you're young and in good health without any serious health issues. For a 74-year-old man with likely underlying health issues related to aging and obesity, it's a whole different ball game. IMO, a stint in Walter Reed's ICU for a couple of weeks and a months long convalescence (which is what many older people who contract Covid-19 experience) might be a good thing if it taught him some humility, but I'm skeptical that Covid Donnie is capable of learning anything. -
Exactly. IIRC, the Steelers turned from perennial doormat to perennial contender back in the late 1960s when Dan Rooney took over control of the team from his father-- and that was a decade or more before free agency and the salary cap and building a good team was a lot harder. Conversely, the Washington team has pretty much been trash since Snyder took over. Infamously, Robert Kraft bought the Patriots, acquired Bill Belichick as HC and chief personnel guy, and let him do his thing for 20+ years. That worked out pretty well. An owner needs to be committed to winning but recognize that he's not a football expert and cede the major decisions over to a GM/HC who knows what he's doing. The owner's job is to find the best football guy to build a team -- and not be afraid of sending that guy packing if he turns out not to be the right guy -- like Jimmy Haslem did to John Dorsey in Cleveland. I think Pegula's experience with Rex Ryan made him realize that he wasn't up to running an NFL team, so it easy for him to give Beane full control of the team after he fired Brandon, which turned out to be a great move for the Bills and their fans going forward. Sometimes it's just plain better to be lucky than good.

Except that there's absolutely no proof that NFL teams tank despite all the claims spouted by some fans. How many fans were convinced that the Carp intended to "tank for Tua". As it turned out, they won 5 games and were competitive in a bunch of other games --- and they still got Tua because he fell in the draft because of injury. Moreover, many teams that get high draft picks continue to fail on the field unless they make major organizational changes. How many #1 overalls have the Lions and Browns had in the last 20 years without many winning seasons to show for them? A team can't get "a Beane style FO" (ie, a competent FO) without support from ownership. Do you really think that Beane would have the success he's had in the last couple of years if Ralph Wilson was still the owner or if Russ Brandon was still enforcing his maximizing profits at the cost of wins philosophy on the Bills organization? After Brandon was fired in the spring of 2018, Pegula gave Beane real GM power to go along with his other duties. I think that has been the key to the Bills resurrection. Winning football games is no longer running a distant second to maximizing profits.

Watching the game last night, that's exactly what I thought. He hasn't significantly improved since he threw a pick six on his first pass as a rookie. He made many of the same mistakes last night that he's been making all his career. That's an indictment of the coaching IMO. We've seen how much good coaching has improved Allen in 2019 and so far in 2020. If he was even minimally coachable, Darnold should improve somewhat, and he hasn't.

Josh Allen AFC Player of the Month!

Was that perhaps ST player of the month? IIRC, Moorman made the Pro Bowl at least once during the Jauron era. He was the only Bills player who made the Pro Bowl that year. -
Two super tough games coming up with the Raiders and Titans
SoTier replied to tomur67's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
McDermott seems to always have the Bills focused on their current opponent, so I'm not worried about the Bills looking past the Raiders or the Titans. My biggest concern is the run defense against two teams with top class runners, Josh Jacobs and Derrick Henry. -

I agree but I would go further. IMO, the Raiders as an organization aren't taking Covid protocols seriously despite the $250,000 fine as evidenced by their players' actions even after the big fines from Week 2. Not allowing the players to practice or play until they're proven covid free would be an appropriate punishment for the Raiders team, but I would also fine each of the players involved an amount equal to one game check which the league should donate to local charities like food banks. The players' irresponsible actions could potentially endanger the future of the entire 2020 NFL season, and they need to feel some personal pain for their personal choices.

Agree. Last night's game is less about what Jackson supposedly can't do and more about what the Ravens can't do because of the way the team is built. They are a run first team that depends upon their defense to shut down high powered offenses so that their own offense can dominate the game with its run power. Last night the Ravens defense got shredded from the get-go because they kept trying to blitz Mahomes -- probably a coaching mistake -- while the Chiefs defense was very effective in bottling up the Ravens on the ground. Moreover, it was less that Jackson couldn't pass well as too many of his receivers dropped passes at key points early in the game before the game got out of hand.

I think that perhaps there should be a time consideration for how long a poster takes to earn a certain number of points that earns them a suspension -- like with driver's licenses where getting too many points in 3 years warrants a suspension. There's a big difference between a poster who earns 5 points over 2 years and another who earns 5 points over 2 months.

All the Josh MVP will be over soon so enjoy it now
SoTier replied to Kingston Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Contrary to popular opinion from some people from outside the region, WNY doesn't turn into an Arctic wasteland come November 1. As Stank_Nasty said, there's usually only 1 or 2 really bad weather homes games over the years, and those are mostly due to wind. More importantly, WNY isn't the only place that's windy (see Chicago, Green Bay, Kansas City, NE, New Jersey, Philadelphia). Cold and snow aren't any worse than heat and rain. Excessive bad weather can affect any team that plays games outdoors, which includes teams that play in domes. MVPs like Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, and Lamar Jackson all play their home games outdoors in stadiums located where inclement weather frequently occurs during the NFL season. -
Inside track on Lawrence after 2 weeks?
SoTier replied to 4merper4mer's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Agreed. It starts and ends at the top. There has to be a real commitment to winning from the ownership before a team can start to move forward. Bills fans have seen that in spades over the last quarter century. I disagree. The team ownership has to have a commitment to winning, which means hiring the right GM and giving him the means to be successful. Moreover, it's not "coach/GM/QB window" hypothesis but more commonly "GM/coach/QB window". In either case it's just too simplistic. Certainly the Bills are not an example of how not to manage it because their problem for most of the 2000s was the quality of their ownership (Ralph Wilson)/owner's surrogate (Russ Brandon) who were both primarily concerned with maintaining/increasing team profitability. The current Bills regime struggled much like previous ones had while under the control of Russ Brandon acting as the owner's surrogate until 2018. Russ Brandon was either the official or defacto GM for the Bills from 2006 through 2018. Except for the Rex Ryan era (2015-2016) when new owner Terry Pegula apparently gave Ryan a blank check to hire coaches, Brandon's philosophy of putting butts in the seats and pennies in the coffers counting more than winning football games ruled the team. Marv Levy was simply a figurehead. Buddy Nix and Doug Whaley were glorified talent scouts. When Brandon controlled the purse strings, the Bills head coaching hires -- except during the Ryan regime -- were either newbies (Marrone, McDermott) or retreads (Jauron, Gailey) -- and their assistants were largely bottom tier because that was all the budgets would allow. In the salary cap era, controlling non-player payroll is one area where NFL teams can limit costs, and that was a strategy the Bills employed under both Donahoe and Brandon throughout the 2000s. I think that Beane had more power than any previous Bills GM since Tom Donahoe because of the change in ownership from Wilson to Pegula -- including the ability to hire scouting and other support staff -- but he still had to toe the fiscal line set by Russ Brandon as head of both the Bills and Sabres. The firing of Brandon in 2018, enabled Beane became a GM in fact, not just in title. He reported directly to Pegula. He was able to set more realistic budgets for assistant coaches. In 2017 and 2018, McDermott hired pretty good defensive assistants, but his offensive and special teams assistants were definitely bottom tier, likely because there wasn't enough budget to hire better ones. Almost all of the offensive and special teams assistants except for OC Daboll, were replaced in 2019. The 2019 coaching hires included an experienced QB coach whom both Beane and McDermott knew, Ken Dorsey, which enabled Josh Allen to start developing into a competent NFL QB. The explosion of the Bills offense in 2020 is directly linked to better coaching in that we see crisp play with relatively few mistakes, young players contributing to the game early on because they've mastered basic pro skills, etc. Moreover, finding a QB isn't enough. Beane, McDermott, et al have also supplied Allen with the talent he needs to be successful -- and with defensive talent to enable the Bills to win football games with regularity. For the first time in the 2000s, the Bills have re-signed most of their "homegrown" talent like White, Dawkins, and Milano instead of letting them walk away in FA and using the draft to fill holes. They've added reasonably priced second and third tier FA vets, and then they traded for a bonafide top NFL WR. I think that the Pegulas have figured out that they've got a good GM and a good HC and are letting them run the football team without worrying too much how much profit they make. Winning is priceless. Yes it is because the Bills aren't in the discussion! -
Manish Mehta: I was wrong about Josh Allen (article)
SoTier replied to BillsFan4's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Totally agree. It was obvious that he was ripping the Jests organization without mentioning them by name -- and the play of the two teams and their two QBs on Sunday added more ammo to his arsenal. The Jests play the QB-less Broncos on Thursday night. Gase may be unemployed by midday Friday. -
