The longer he takes to name his starting QB week 1, the longer the Ravens have to split time preparing for 2 very different QBs.

    Not annoying.

    Smart.

I don't agree with the OP, but shouldn't we want them to gameplan for whoever we start?  It's preseason, I'd rather get a clear evaluation of a QB against a defense that  gameplans for that specific QB.

The snap was early. Groy's mistake. He's messed up the snap count twice this preseason, maybe something to watch.

The OL struggled with communicating this game. I wonder if they were trying something new. Many mental mistakes.

One of the analysts was mentioning this happening to a lot of teams Offensive Lines.  Linemen being completely lost by simple stunts around the league in preseason.

Blamed it on lack of in-person tape watching with everyone taking their tablets home to watch tape instead of staying as a unit.

  3. People can say he’s not ready but a lot of that is based off the narrative he was an ultra-talented project.

Pretty sure he doesnt look like a project.  Also, pretty sure nobody would be calling him a project if he came from a P-5 school.

He looked great with the 3’s.  He looked great with the 2’s.  He hasn’t given anyone a reason why he wouldn’t look great with the 1s.

For the whole OL will get him killed crowd.  I’m just going to assume that we don’t run basic 1 on 1 blocking schemes when Allen is back there. I think we’ll see a lot of 2 TE/1 back sets to help in protection.   Also helps that he seems to find TE’s at a nice clip to move the chains.

  4. Bills are a better team.  Remember, we’ve shipped out talent for “team”.

Browns do have a nice collection of talent though - That defensive front 7 is strong, with depth, and they have some serious weapons on offense.

At the very least, they shouldn’t be an automatic 2 wins for everyone in that division.  They remind me of a more talented NY Jets.

I do think our offensive talent will surprise with a QB who actually throws the ball and a new OC who doesn’t run, run, pass.

On defense, there’s definitely enough talent for Leslie Frazier to make this unit Top 10.  Our worries are CB depth, the preseason play of Tremaine Edmunds and Matt Milano along with Trent Murphy’s health... that’s first world problems.

  5. I’m not sure what good any of this will do.  Hopefully with AJ out of the mix, we aren’t forced to see Bodine starting.   Groy at C gives us 3 solid linemen along with Dawkins and Miller.  Mills is ok at RT, upgradeable for sure, but playable.

We can go out and trade/sign for a LG but it seems we’d need a Quenton Nelson to unseat Vlad’s deathgrip on a starting spot.

  6. If you’re that into having high draft picks as an indicator of investment into the OL then let me remind you that Dawkins and Ducasse are former 2nd rounders and Miller is a former 3rd round pick.

Our greatest OL of the last two decades was an UDFA in Jason Peters.

Every fan base cries about their OL. By now, we should understand these behemoths are actually highly skilled, talented football players vs the ‘Bouncers off the street’ so many infer. There isn’t a single NFL OL player that doesn’t deserve the rare prestige of being on a final NFL roster -if only for continued evaluation.

Its all about scheme and acquiring OLmen with skill sets best suited to it. If, as suggested, Dabol plans different schemes week to week, then the jury is out on how well this novel approach my work.

Are Defensive Ends & Linebackers better athletes and trimmer body styles than OL? Of course. There in lies the challenges of protection and initial hole run blocking tactics. Just because we don’t know these guys like we knew Wood, Incog & Glenn (with all their detractors) doesn’t mean Bubba & Jimbob from the corner gin mill can step in and be better.

    Its ALL about scheme fit.

    This.

Aside from maybe 3-4 teams, every other team has to “make it work” on the OL. Nobody is trotting our 4-5 stud linemen week to week.

This is a good point...and I assume Dabol was calling a basic offense last night so as not to tip his hand too much

Which is why preseason is a joke.  You have some teams working on basic stuff, while other teams are running more complex stuff/blitzes etc.

All this talk about player safety, meanwhile preseason has become a battle of attrition to see who can come out the least damaged.

I'm not holding Taylor blameless, but Bills fans have been using their QBs as scapegoats for poor OL play since 2003 when they blamed Drew Bledsoe for "holding the ball too long".  Sometimes they've been correct but most times it's been the failure of the Bills FO/GM/HC/whomever has been in charge of personnel to improve the talent on the OL.  Whatever bricks and bats one wants to throw at Doug Whaley, he understood that you can't build a good OL without some investment in talent.  I don't believe that McDermott and Beane, who are supposedly "joined at the hip", do because they seem to be going back to the bad old days of trying to create an NFL caliber OL with non-NFL talent.

Thats because QBs and OCs are almost as influential in how an OL looks as the actual OL is.

  10. If Peterman can carry his preseason play to the regular season and cut down on lollipop throws like that sideline out, we’d probably win a lot of games with him.

I’m just not ready to believe that’s the case.   He might throw for 250-300 yards per game and a couple TDs as his upside but interceptions just seem to follow him.

Even this preseason, 50/50 on him and Ivory but still a pick.   Last night should’ve been a pick 6.

Can he reel those bad throws in and/or can we win despite them?

All i I know about Allen is that he JUMPS off the screen at you.  He has that IT factor matched with the talent.  Just seems pointless to delay the inevitable.  If I’m McDermott, I start Josh Allen Game 3, and as long as he up to the occasion, name him Week 1 starter.

Re the oline.... good read of the field and a quick release helps solve some oline problems.

A good OL is extremely rare in the NFL these days.

Most have one or two good players and some mid-round picks or journeyman slapped together.  Then you hope you don’t get too banged up during the season.

QBs and OC’s can make an OL look a lot better than they are.  They also can exacerbate any issues the OL have.

Our gripe as fans of this team is the fact (in games, we don’t see what they see at practice) that Groy and Teller look way better than Vlad and Bodine.
