I think it's pretty clear what they're trying to do.  They want fans to come to the exhibition they've set up and be blown away rather than making a decision based upon a video or drawings.  And yes, of course tickets are going to be more expensive -- I don't understand why anyone would think differently.

The Buffalo Bills live experience in Orchard Park is going to change.  Not everyone who went to games before is going to be able to go in the future.  it's just the way it is.  That doesn't mean the stadium and experience for those who do go won't be awesome.

I agree. There seems like a significantly disproportionate emphasis on marketing going on here.

  2. Okay, having watched the video I’m still confused as to what the Bills are trying to do here. They seem desperate to NOT show their fans the new stadium. I’m a huge fan of physical models, like the one they feature in the video, but there again….show us the damn model!!! Don’t just show us people’s faces as they react to seeing the model. Geez!

I can tell you this; the high production promotional video and the detailed physical model cost them way, way, way more to make than a computer generated fly around/through video. The skeptic in me is beginning to think that some of the fans on here may be right. You’re about to get colossally soaked on ticket prices!

Well, sure, the job isn't difficult.  Just show up and make decisions. It is literally true that anyone can do that.

Being good at the job, however, is something else, for exactly the reason you give:  To do your job well, you have to manage a lot of things that are outside of your control.

It’s not true that anyone can do it. It takes a unique skill set of someone who’s reasonably skilled with people, and extremely skilled with money and budgeting.

Am I really the only one who doesn't see this 5th round pick as ammo for trade up only?

I for one want Beane to use those pick to draft 10-11 players and then I want 8-9 or them to actually make a team. Don't bring tons of random useless vets, draft and use cheap talent.

That's an interesting comment. For over a decade people would critique the Patriots strategy of moving down and stockpiling picks. They had their Franchise QB in place. But I have to admit that I never followed it close enough to know if Billy B stuck with those picks on Draft Day, or used them as trade bait to move up. Does anyone know?

What do you think the going rate is for backup centers?  I think they did well to get anything more than a seventh rounder for him.

These are the folks who would scream if the trade was reversed and we gave up a 5th round pick for somebody else’s backup center. 😂

Actually, none of the posters who complained about their jobs in this thread disliked their "line of work" (ie, the work they were doing) but the way they were treated by their employers.   Big difference.

Correct….and….Liking what you do also involves liking where you choose to do it.

All to save a pitance? 1.4 mil? Garbage move....

And you would make what move instead? There’s a great thread that shows the overall roster laid out with the players all listed in groups (starters, reserves, under contract, etc). Go take a look at that one. As both you and I have said, Beane has tied his own hands. There will be two overarching themes to Off Season 2024: (1) a lot of turnover of non-starters and (2) some creative wizardry of contract negotiations with the starters that remain.

Maybe so but the cap problem was of Beane's own making. Can we cut Beane instead?

That’s true but he doesn’t count against the Cap. So far I see very little drama or controversy here. It’s inevitable!

I do NOT like this move. A 5th round pick for a very solid OL player who can play tackle to center. I guess Beane wants to have no depth anymore...

If I understand our Cap position he really has no choice. He pretty much has to unload any and all redundancy (depth) that he’s got. And if he can get a draft pick in return, then that’s better than just releasing guys for nothing.

Bates traded for a 5th. This makes it much more likely that Morse returns as the starting center.  Opens up an opportunity for Anderson or a draft pick as the backup at center.

I wanted us to go after Van Pran in the draft.  Maybe this opens that possibility as well.

So looking at your updated list, what’s the next move? Seems like Beane is in the trimming the roster redundancy mode. But if I’m reading everyone’s posts on the Cap correctly there’s got to be more serious cuts than Hines and Bates.

More and more Americans are waking up to the fact you mean absolutely nothing to an employer. Do your job, go home and forget about them.

Okay? In over three decades as a business owner I never once told an employee that they couldn’t use a single day of accrued vacation, sick, or emergency time. Not once.

I've made a couple of tweaks to my board based on the Combine. I think a lot of what I saw there was confirming things I'd already priced in so have left it unaffected but the things I've changed are:

    - bumped Ladd McConkey up two points. He was just more explosive than I expected. You something get that with guys like him who are such smooth movers that you underestimate the explosiveness. He had a good week, moved him up two points on my grading chart;

    - bumped Xavier Worthy up one point. I knew he was going to run fast but fastest ever, that deserves recognition, up one;

    - bumped Troy Franklin down three. Isn't just an over reaction to the "underwear olympics" the problem for Franklin is all the things that were in the negatives column when I watched his film were exacerbated by what showed up both in the measurements and the drills and the things that were in the positives column were slightly undermined. I think I was guilty of seeing how he could be used in the Bills offense and thinking with red, white and blue specs on when originally grading him because I wanted him to be a potential weapon for us. I feel worse about every benefit of every doubt I gave him on the film post this weekend.

    - Keon Coleman down one. I thought he'd run high 4.4s, maybe low 4.5s and I'd have been fine with that because I don't think speed was ever going to be his calling card. 4.64 doesn't totally rule him out of being a good NFL player but I wonder how effective he is really going to be as a deep threat outside at that speed. The lack of separation is explainable by that run. I wonder now if his best fit in the NFL is as a Big Slot.

I left Adonai Mitchell unchanged. I need to go back to the tape on him because I was baffled by the testing. Does not show up on tape. So doing the same thought exercise as @DCOrange above and ignoring the top three that leaves me with a wide receiver board of:

    1. Xavier Legette (1st)

    2. Brian Thomas (1st/2nd)

    3. Adonai Mitchell (2nd)

    4. Ladd McConkey (2nd)

    5. Xavier Worthy (2nd)

    6. Troy Franklin (2nd)

    7. Keon Coleman (2nd)

    8. Roman Wilson (2nd/3rd)

    9. Javon Baker (3rd)

    10. Jermaine Burton (3rd)

    Thanks Gunner

So based on your reshuffling and so much other chatter, are the Bills taking a WR in the 1st? Seems like you believe that the value is suspect, and the smarter move is to take a DL and then slide back up in the 2nd for a WR.

The Hamlin situation is unique.  He is only making $1million (40k dead cap if released).  There is no real cap savings if released, as he would be replaced on the 51 man cap roster by someone making just as much.  However, releasing him now gives him the opportunity to pursue his career elsewhere before free agency begins.  Ultimately it comes down to whether or not Beane and McDermott think that Hamlin can contribute more next season than last and whether they believe a replacement in the draft or from free agency would contribute more.  Hamlin’s advantage is that he knows the defense and if cut, Poyer is the only S on the roster.

As to Neal and Gilliam, they are primarily special teams stars who no longer see regular snaps on O or D.  That makes them ripe for being let go, but maybe more likely a pay cut.

The White situation is a mess.  He has a bonus coming due soon.  He also has now had two major injuries in the last few seasons.  I have zero idea what Beane is thinking, but if I had to guess he’ll extend his contract with void years to bring down the cap hit to keep a key person in the organization and allow the White to rehab properly.  Maybe that’s just wishful thinking on my part.

I’d release Harty, but with Hines now gone, the odds of Harty returning as a depth WR and kick returner just went up.

PS thanks for the compliment.  I am a visual learner and I often create lists like this because it helps me understand where all the puzzle pieces go, especially when you looking at a list on some websites that list some 90 names associated with the team.

I’m visual learner as well. I can’t see the point in the countless round and round without a contextual list to base the discussion around. I’m guessing that Beane is more in our camp. He can’t possibly be making these decisions on a case by case basis.

OL - Brown, Dawkins, Torrence, McGovern, and Van Demark

    Defense (12)

LB - Milano, Benard, Williams, Spector

CB - Benford, Douglas, Elam, Johnson

Specialist (2) - Bass (PK), Ferguson (LS)

Group 2 (5) - Players under contract likely to return, but could also end up as cap casualties if K's not restructured

    OL - Morse, Bates,

    S - Poyer

    P - Martin

    Group 3 (5) - Returning Developmental players

    WR- Shorter

    OL - Anderson, Doyle

    DL - Ankou, Cline

Group 4 (6) - Potential (likely?) cap casualties

RB - Hines   Hines to be released (3/3/2024)

    FB - Gilliam

    WR - Harty

    CB - Neal, White

    S - Hamlin

    Group 5 (13) - Futures/Reserve players

    QB - Buechele

WR - Isabella, Hamler, Shavers, Thompson

    RB - Evans

    TE - McKitty, Davidson

    OL - Gouriage, Jarvis

    CB - Ingram, Brown

    S - Williamson

Assuming all of the players in groups 1-3 return, that's 35 of 53 roster spots already spoken for. Admittedly the group 3 players could all end up on the practice squad.  Except for Hamlin, all the Group 4 players may return, but it will be at lower cap figures than they currently possess.  Hamlin's cap figure is low (1.05 with a 40k dead cap) it's just a question of whether he can earn a job on the 53-man roster.  Right now I don't see any of the Group 5 players making the team, but that's what camp is for.

Group 6 (10) - FAs who could be re-signed (or who people here may want re-signed).  (I only have an interest in Jones, Epenesa, Ty Johnson and Edwards)

    DT - Jones, Joseph

    Edge - Epenesa, Floyd

    RB - Johnson

    S - Rapp

    OL - Edwards

    TE - Morris

    CB - Lewis

    LB -Dodson

    Group 7 (11) - Other FAs

DL - Phillips, Settle, Ford, Lawson

    QB - K Allen

    RB - Murray, Harris, Fournette

    WR - Sherfield

    LB - Matakevich, Klein

I asked this in the Hines thread but I like the organization of your list way better. Do you believe we’re going to see the rest of Group 4 join Hines fate later this week? Hamlin, White, Neal, Gilliam, and Harty? For example, I read that Hamlin is already at close to league minimum.

  15. You guys spend way more time on this cap stuff than I do so I’m interested in what anyone guesses the next two or three moves will be. Put another way, if Mc Govern and Hines were the lowest hanging fruit; whose on the next branch up? Who else gets whacked (not just restructured)?

I haven’t watched any of Chop Robinson’s game tape yet, but I was certainly impressed by his athletic performance last night at the Combine.  It’s not just his 40 time, he looked smooth and athletic in most every event and the guy is really built - he isn’t just an undersized fast guy.  It IS troubling that his sack production in college wasn’t higher, though.  I don’t know if I would take him because of his lesser production, but I think he will be picked in the first round - perhaps before the Bills pick anyway.

Every time I hear of a high ceiling low floor DE with little experience from Penn State it gives me Aaron Maybin flashbacks. And that ain’t a good thing. 😉
