No one will be happier than me if he has an MVP season. He just has to have a better year for that to happen. 2020 or 2021 Allen might have been good enough to win it this year.

I'm just hoping he can take that 4th quarter magic and string it together on a run for the next 4 games. All will definitely be forgotten then.

2021 Allen???? Dude... did you actually watch the Bills in 2021???

Oh... and I call your bluff... I think it would really get under your skin if Allen wins MVP.

I still can't get over the fact that so many of you thought Allen was good yesterday. Beyond his four turnovers, one of his "good" plays was a fluky throw off a helmet that happened to fall into the back of the endzone for a TD.

I hate that I'm now coming off as a hater because I'm not. I love Allen, but this thread is making me crazy and questioning some posters grasp on reality. Every week it's the same thing. We excuse every Allen mistake. It's someone else's fault every time. Gabe ran the wrong way (even though he ran into wide open space in the endzone). Wilkens just made a great play so it's not Josh's fault he fumbled.. Throwing an INT on 4th down was the "right" decision. Throwing it into play with the clock winding to zero was just giving us a chance and not sacrificing points. Give me a break.

Josh is a top 5ish player in the league. He has the talent to be the best player. But we fall over ourselves making excuses for him at every turn and it's maddening.

I dunno man. There's a middle ground here.

You understand that Allen set another "no one's ever done this!" record on Sunday night, right???

As it is, I was intrigued by Joe Marino's All-22 analysis that I think you should listen to. He begins it by pretty seriously criticizing Josh for his 2 interceptions and then his end of half play.

Then he goes in an interesting direction I didn't expect. Watch it and remember this is a guy who's actually making a living watching film, scouting players and talking about it.

  3. This probably could have been a joke or troll thread at some point this year, but I'm posting it because I absolutely think Sherfield will just be better than Gabe for the playoff run.

    Great run blocker like Gabe.

Demonstrated the same sideline awareness Gabe has made himself famous for with that TD.

And that just leaves the question of the communication... well, Gabe has shown 4 years of catching passes from Allen hasn't done anything for his understanding of things like what route he should run on a zero Blitz, so I'll put my money on Sherfield and his veteran experience.

He stunk the first half.  And then played as good as a QB can play in the fourth quarter.  No one needs you being the thought police.

    Stunk?

    Seriously?????

Your standards are ridiculous if you think Allen stunk in the 1st half. Or you're stat watching.

Allen’s worst 2 plays of the entire game were the play that ended the 1st half and his lost fumble. Otherwise, he was excellent. Throwing an interception on 4th down in the EZ that nets the team 15 yards looks bad on the stat sheet but wasn't a bad play given the circumstances and the 1st Interception was on Davis.

I would think you would be able to acknowledge the context of these plays.

Team won because of Allen. Even the drives we turned the ball over the offense drove the ball down the field to give the D a breather and then set them up to defend a long field.

Add another bad game to that.

Wouldn't exactly call it a bad game. Allen obviously won't win even though he has 15 more TDs than the guy who eventually will.

Anyone watching that game should understand the context of the turnovers by Allen. The lost fumble was stupid and 100% on him. The 1st Interception was pretty clearly on Davis, who (once again) should've read a zero blitz in his route. The other Interception was on Allen but was literally meaningless and actually a benefit for the offense since the defender chose to intercept a ball on 4th down... making for negative yardage for the Dolphin offense.

Allen’s dumbest play tonight was the one at the end of the 1st half to Ty Johnson preventing points on the board.

But all good... onto the playoffs!!!

Allen finds receivers when they get open, at a pace higher than any other QB in the NFL. The problem is that they simply aren’t getting open!

@Maine-iac and I were debating this a few days ago. I have been shouting from the roof tops that Bills receiving options do not gain much separation. The argument I get back is simply “Yes they do! Allen just isn’t throwing to the guys that are open”.

Here is a chart, plotted through Week 17, that shows Allen has the highest % of throws to open receivers, despite his receiving options being 27th in the NFL in separation (in totality of all QB’s plotted).

    IMG-6151.jpg

Also, notice how open Lamar’s receivers are…

This is something I posted about Sunday’s game in the MVP thread. Joe Marino did a full All-22 analysis of the game and largely concludes our receivers are letting Josh down.

Bruce Nolan said the same thing in his Bruce Exclusive podcast this week. He emphasizes the team really needs 2 things we don't have: a field stretcher and someone who's dynamic with the ball in their hands.

But to be honest...I do think that against the Pats that was one of the worst days I have seen Josh in terms of accuracy and throwing the ball since his rookie year.

I also am wondering if there is something wrong with his throwing shoulder because he is coming up short or late on a lot of throws this season that he normally isn't.  I know there is twitter fool saying there is a shoulder injury since the first quarter of week 1, and hard to say if its true or not, but I do have to say his arm doesn't look as strong as it has in the past when he was scrambling and throwing on the run.  He used to just flick it a mile downfield and now he just seems way short a lot.  He obviously still has plenty of velocity, but I feel like something is impacting Josh's ability to make the harder throws that few can make, and many only he can make.

Well FWIW Bruce Nolan--SUPER highly respected analyst and film guru--echoed Marino's sentiments about the passing game in his podcast yesterday.

He put majority of the passing game struggles on IOL and the receivers. He also says it's pretty obvious that Brady's offense is setting the passing game up for success.

lol wut? There were no fans in the seats that year. There certainly weren't planes full of fans going. You know, the whole COVID thing.

The last time we took over Nashville was in 2019. 70% Bills fans. We won 14-7.

You're obviously right about the year I got wrong.

    It wasn't 2020.

    But it's also not 2019.

It was 2021. We lost 34-31

And we had almost the exact same video of Bills fans on an airplane for that game.

This actually makes me superstitiously nervous. The last time I remember all the hype about Bills fans taking over a stadium and seeing an airplane video exactly like this was 2021 when we played at Tennessee.

    We lost 34-31.

(Edited this because I obviously got the year wrong initially saying it was 2020 )

Nobody who votes for the MVP is gonna watch this.  All they see is Josh 50% completions, under 200 yards and a narrow win against a bad team that also already beat us earlier this year.  They will see 4 turnovers that the offense only managed 13 points on.

That’s the issue, no one is going to look into reasons outside of Allen for pass game struggles.

So he has no chance to unseat Lamar, especially with Lamar sitting this week, because Allen and the offense is coming off 2 dud games against 2 bad teams where the last time they saw Lamar he and the Ravens destroyed the 2 seed in the AFC after destroying what everyone felt was the best team in the NFL with the Niners.

So doesn’t matter if Josh throws 10 TDs this week, he isn’t going to unseat Lamar at this point in the voters eyes.

I was really posting that in the context of people like @BullBuchanan who are flipping out about Allen's play on Sunday.

Josh didn't even make it as an alternate for the probowl. MVP talk has been ridiculous for a while now. His stats have overrated his overall play this season imo. Too many close games lost where he just didn't have it for long stretches.

Are you saying the probowl matters????

@transplantbillsfan Still making excuses for Allen when he has bad games. 🤦

Allen is very good. i would not trade him for any other QB right now.  He’s not the MVP this year sorry. His TD numbers and offensive production % are outstanding and push him into consideration yes, but that is absolutely not what “MVP” voters look at. It’s a glorified “QB on the best team” award.

You talk out of several sides of your mouth throughout this post...

    sooo...

are you actually saying you think Allen should be the MVP??? That's what it sounds like.

If he caught the ball in stride, he would have caught it facing the endzone he was running towards, not his QB in the opposite direction. Watch the actual clip in real time if you think frame by frame is misleading. If Kincaid catches the ball over his shoulder, It's a guaranteed TD. He couldn't and it wasn't. Underthrown.

Wait... of all the plays on Sunday, you're trying to criticize the one big passing play the team had on an absolutely perfect pass from Josh????

Wait... let's check the tape again...

Gotcha, and I do agree that he is not a serious MVP candidate this year.  Too many losses where the offense didn't play well against bad teams (Jets, Pats, Denver, etc)...too many close calls against bad teams we did win but the offense struggled (Giants, Chargers, Pats, etc).  Now had Josh had stellar games against Pats and Chargers, he would probably have a punchers chance with a huge game against Miami.

But we beat Dallas with Josh only attempting 15 passes (completing 7) then offensively struggled against Chargers and especially the Patriots where Josh accumulated some TD's, but the offense as a whole was not very efficient.  Pats game was one of the worst games I have seen from Josh since he was a rookie...maybe even the worst.  He was just off target all game and out of sync on a day where Lamar was putting up 5 TD's against the #2 seed in the AFC in Miami.

Love Josh, and I do think he is a top 5 MVP finalist, but just not the type of season with too many down games against bad teams and turnovers for him to over take Lamar at this point.

I think this was the take most of us had, but apparently the passing game struggles Sunday should really go more on the OL and WRs.

Watch/listen to the first half of Joe Marino's All-22 analysis of the Pats game. And keep in mind that Marino has been incredibly critical of JA17 recently.

He attributes 4 or 5 passing play struggles to Allen and the rest to the OL (specifically the Interior OL... he said Dawkins and Brown were studs) and to the WRs.

One of the interesting parts was his analysis of Josh's interception. He puts the blame of that interception squarely on Sherfield's shoulders because he ran an incredibly lazy route. If Sherfield looked like he was really anticipating a pass and running that route full effort and speed, Austin never would have separated. But since it was obvious to Austin based on the way the route was run that Sherfield never was getting the ball, Austin sprinted towards the other route.

And before anyone puts the onus on Josh for dialing in strictly to Kincaid, Marino also points out that Kincaid was the correct read because the Safety started following Sherfield. If he didn't, Sherfield would have been the correct read.

Sounds like the passing game is close despite not looking like it.

It has been theorized by many that Allen has been struggling with some kind of shoulder injury this season. Apparent confirmation here:

FWIW CJ Caggiano is a reputable insider, I've followed him for a while. Every year he has schedule leaks that turn out to be correct, and he has given a couple injury updates that turned out to be correct as well.

Take the info how you will, but if true it could possibly explain some of the recent mechanical issues Allen has had on some of his throws.

I think it's clear it's lingered. Anyone notice how the broadcast caught him opening and closing his right hand on the sideline on Sunday?

And yet, for all the talk of "Josh needs to run less!!!" this is the 3rd relatively significant injury of his career (2 UCLs and now the shoulder) and all have taken place in the pocket.

Definitely Lamars to lose. Also Lamar had a huge day against the Phins which hurts Josh IMO.

Josh would have to blow Lamars numbers out if the water from this week to have a shot imo. Common opponent so close those games will be compared.

I'd rather the Bills win a Lombardi than Josh win an MVP though.

No he wouldn't have to blow Lamar's numbers out of the water, but I'd say he'd need comparable numbers.

Anything less than a win with 300 total yards, 4 total TDs, and more than 1 turnover and he has no shot.

I have a hard time believing voters would look at the QB of the #2 seed who has accumulated 4800+ total yards and 46+ total TDs and not think long and hard about making him the league MVP.

And just to be clear people... just win baby!!! I don't care how it looks.

Crazy though the stats Allen is going to have and not be MVP. You look at his stats and you’d think there’s no way he isn’t MVP. It’s just that Allen isnt consistent enough. When he’s on, he’s the best player in the NFL by far.

This is why there's one more week.

If Allen owns Miami the way he's owned them over the last few years, it's going to be close.

On a side note... are we all now in agreement that CMC, Tyreek and Purdy are out of it????

So you're either in the camp that Lamar has it wrapped up or it's Lamar and then Allen with a distant shot???

  17. 4 hours ago, HalftimeAdjustment said:

It's over for Josh regardless. It has been over for him. He is far behind several other players and today just puts an exclamation point on that. It happens, QBs have down years.

Man... we're so spoiled all the sudden.

If my QB is having a down year when he accumulates 4500+ yards and 42 TDs in a year he’s completing over 65% of his passes... sign me up immediately for that HOF career.
