  1. (Sorry... this may or may not belong in Off the Wall)

Is it an age thing? I don't think I can listen to anything but podcasts at this point.

When I listen to music, it's just music I know that I create as Playlists on Pandora.

My non-football podcasts are now down to Throughline and Freakanomics.

Most of my podcasts are Bills/NFL related, though.

Bruce Nolan and The Bruce Exclusive was my absolute favorite Bills podcast... but like right before the draft Buffalo Rumblings went kaput and he lost his platform. Even when he was on, it was only once a week for less than an hour... so not remotely time consuming.

Which means I guess I would say Joe Marino's Locked on Bills is my favorite now.

I have my gripes... primarily I just think he’s incredibly Robotic and lacks any real personality (unlike Bruce Nolan), but he tries to pretend like he has a lot of personality and he 100% knows his football with a background in scouting. He also has a daily podcast and comes up with pretty good ideas for them every day (the opposite of this would be Pat Moran's Talking Buffalo podcast, which just has a lot of useless, unentertaining time) and so I can say I legitimately listen to pretty much every episode.

As for non-football podcasts, The Athletic Football Show with Robert Mayes as host (Nate Tice left just a couple weeks ago) is 100% by far the best sports (and maybe any???) podcast I've listened to. It airs 3 or 4 days a week and every show is informative and entertaining, even if it's non-Bills related. I just listened to a 90 minute podcast about the lingering questions of the NFC East and made it from beginning to end without the desire to turn it off. Mayes is a fun, knowledgeable, funny host who brings good guests on. I miss Tice, but the show hasn't missed a beat.

There's also an Athletic Football show GM podcast hosted by Mike Sando featuring Randy Mueller. It's not as good but I listen to it and find it interesting and sometimes informative. Sando does a great job but Mueller has some bizarre takes sometimes... almost like he stopped watching football 15-20 years ago.

A very close 2nd for the non-football podcast to listen to is The Mina Kimes show (featuring Lenny). She's an awesome host. Everything I said about Mayes applies to her. I understand there may be some bias one way or another since she's on TV, but she's really created an excellent listen for all the reasons The Athletic Football Show is. Only problem is that her's is only once or twice a week.

    How about you guys?

    Evidence?

You do realize Von Miller played in 14 games (including playoffs) last season?

It's understandable if you didn't notice that he was playing...the man was a ghost out there and finished the season with 3 tackles and no sacks.

Watching him in any of those games should be all the evidence anyone needs to know he's a washed up bum.

See what I already said about time to recover off an ACL tear

There's a BIG difference between age 33 and age 35 for edge rushers. If statmuse is correct there's been 19 seasons in NFL history where a player age 35+ had 10+ sacks.

There's also a big difference between 10+ sacks and the 4.5 line I came up with.

Von Miller is a washed up bum though so i'll take the under.

    Wager: 100 units of pride

I'll bump the thread in January to celebrate if I win, or earlier If I lose to eat some crow.

What evidence do you have to suggest that Von Miller is a washed up bum???

I'm confused.  Are you putting out that state about 10+ sacks for 35+ players because you think it proves something?  If it does, I think it proves my point more than yours.

The Von Miller that had 8 sacks in 11 games was 'only' 33 years old and was not coming off a major knee injury.

The 2024 Von Miller is 35 years old and coming off a major knee injury.

I'd put the betting line for his sack total on the season at 4.5

Yeah... this line of argument is silly.  It looks at age in a vacuum rather than looking at the player individually.

He was fantastic at 33 when he was on the field and healthy at 33.  Last season was the year he was "coming off a major knee injury."  At this point... what is at the moment 1 1/2 years separate from that injury and will be almost 2 full years separate from that injury once the season starts, I don't even think the injury is a factor in this equation.  It's entirely age.  And I've given my argument about the age thing already.  He showed no signs of slowing down last time he was on the field and healthy in 2022 at 33 years old.

4.5???  Wanna make a friendly wager that he gets more than that?

  5. I don't think Von wins DPOY, but I actually think the "Von is over-the-hill" narrative is head-scratching.

Throw out his play from last season.  History says that players take more than a full calendar year to fully recover from an ACL tear and often closer to 2 full calendar years to round back into form.  We saw that happen with Tre White and it happens time and time again with players in the NFL.

So the only argument regarding Von is his age.  @GunnerBill said this offseason that Von is washed and he thinks there's something like a 5% chance Von has any impact on the team this year.  That's really the way almost everyone feels.  He's a complete afterthought.

Do you guys not remember how Von was playing up until that Thanksgiving game in 2022????  It's not like he showed any signs of age whatsoever.  The guy had 8 sacks in 11 games and was still a game-wrecker.  Didn't look like a 33 year old pass rusher in any way.

We know he works.  We know he wants to win.  And we know he believes in himself.

I think Von is going to have a very productive season this year.  He may not get double digit sacks, but as a DPR I could absolutely see him getting 6-10 sacks.

There's also the cost of the Practice Squad and in season spending pool. We also have an open roster spot for Training Camp, so we're going to sign someone. Long story short, we won't be rolling over 9m.

I said if no more spending.  Can add in the Practice Squad money, which is at most $1 or $2 million, if that.

    Still leaves us over $20m.

And again... I said if no more moves and we roll over the money we don't spend into next year.

If we spend ALL our Tre White money and our remaining CAP, we'll still have $14m in CAP space plus the $8.5m if we cut Von with only Spencer Brown as our in-house remaining "big" UFA.

  7. Anyone complaining about CAP space next year...

Overthecap projects us at $14m next season.

If Buffalo rolls over the Tre White extension without doing anything with it next month minus paying the rookie class we get about $9m.

Plus everyone thinks we're cutting Von next offseason... if we do we get $8.5m in CAP savings.

Over $31m in CAP space right there.

Plus... could still easily restructure Oliver, Taron and Josh for a lot more money.

And as far as FA go... the big one is really only Spencer Brown.

Beane has set this team up for the future!

Chiefs’ Worthy exits early, rookies impress in first day of minicamp

The Kansas City Chiefs’ 2024 first-round pick did not finish his first practice as a pro.

In the latter half of practice during a play during the team session, wide receiver Xavier Worthy ran a go route and attempted to stretch for the ball. After the play, Worthy stretched his left leg before walking gingerly to the sideline.

He took his helmet off but later put it back on after taking a drink and talking with trainers and coaches. Worthy jogged to certain spots throughout the rest of practice but did not take another rep.

It was the end of the day for the 28th overall pick.

  9. Shaw... was arguing the Bills would be better next year before this draft even happened... so obviously, I agree with you.

To me, the national media is somehow gifting Buffalo the underdog mentality, which baffles my mind... but I think we take it and run with it.

  10. Interesting conversation.

Let's be honest @KDIGGZ and his cohort will be negative about anything.

Coleman reportedly ran the 2nd fastest speed on a go route (along with the fastest gauntlet drill of at least the last 2 drafts) at 21.71 mph. I don't know math like @oldmanfan, but a quick Google search tells me a it would be 18.18 mph to run 4.5 seconds in a flying 40.

Maybe Coleman just didn't prepare to run the way a lot of guys do for the Combine. It's a Combine specific event... not like they'll ever do that again.

Dude's not slow. Watch him return punts. So young and so much untapped potential.

I think it's amazing how much his 40 time dropped his draft stock. Lucky for Buffalo, we hope.

The problem with KJ Hamler (and Cephus for that matter) is that they've been plagued by injuries.

Hamler has had two torn ACLs (HS and pro), two hammies serious enough for IR as a pro, a torn pec, and pericarditis.  If it weren't for bad injury luck, he'd have no luck at all.

Isabella came out with questions about his hands, and has never managed to get on the field very much.  The positive thing is he saw some ST snaps last season - not as the returner, but presumably as a gunner due to his speed.

So if Brady has plans that require a guy with their skillsets, it f'in sucks that we didn't take a draft shot at a similar profile player who hasn't racked up the years of ??

If we're talking dark horse WR at the bottom of the roster, Bryan Thompson interests me.  He's not a super speedy guy, but the draft profile I found (and I had to dig) had very positive things to say about his route-running abilities and release moves, and concluded he was worth stashing on a PS for a year to see if he could develop.  So we signed him as an UDFA and stashed him....now we'll see.

Dude... Isabella or Hamler would be at best the 4th WR in something resembling the McKenzie role. Our top 3 is Shakir, Samuel and Coleman.

I think that starting trio is much better than what people think it will be as those 3 skillsets complement each other very well. The Diggs role may be downgraded from last season (though I really am excited to see what Brady has in store for Samuel) but the Davis role I view as a significant upgrade and it's year 3 for Shakir and now he gets the chance to hit the ground running in week 1. And our WR depth is better.

So... let's see how our roster improves starting tonight.  I said I think the Bills will be better this upcoming season... I still think they will.

As of this moment, just hours before the draft, this is how I view the Buffalo Bills roster at the moment.

And yes, we can field a 53 man team that consists of zero guys I'd strictly put in the "Practice Squad" category.

So after the draft I believe we've filled out our roster pretty nicely.

Everyone is absolutely freaking out about our WR corps, but I think we've underestimated the likelihood that Brady has some planned role in this offense for Hamler or Isabella... whoever wins that 2-way competition. Those 2 guys are basically the exact player that would complement the drafting of Coleman.

And Justin Shorter still lurks at the bottom of our depth chart as that sneaky 5th round contributor Beane is known to draft.

This quote from Beane defines the entire draft strategy:

He is giving it to us straight. The Bills are in a rebuild year. So he went for all team captains. Guys that interviewed well. Guys that he believes set a new foundation of leadership in the building. He hunted for short term needs that fit the singular character profile he and McDermott feel comfortable with, at the expense of talent at premium positions. And he is telling the fanbase to temper our expectations without coming right out and saying it.

I'm not gonna grade a draft until we see how all the players turn out, but the overall philosophy shown this weekend is deflating and uninspiring.

I don't exactly know if by "rebuild year" you mean that as a negative thing, though based on your tone it seems so.

Of course they're rebuilding. We knew that on Black Wednesday. But rebuilding with an Elite QB and a bunch of other already established young talent on the team (Cook, Kincaid, Dawkins, Cybo, Groot, Milano, TB, Benford, Shakir, etc.) and some well established vets like Daquan, Von and Douglas doesn't mean this team isn't contending.

    You guys are all nuts.

Buffalo is winning at least as many games in 2024 as 2023.
