"Big Name" cuts around the league...
BillsFan4 replied to JÂy RÛßeÒ's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Not that this qualifies as a big name, and I definitely don’t have any interest in him. But it looks like Chad Kelly might be safe... for now. Edit - oops. Missed this. Maybe Chad Kelly’s spot isn’t quite as safe as I thought... -

Who is Beane’s next trade chip?
BillsFan4 replied to GoodHands15's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don’t think Beane is just looking to trade players willy-nilly for draft picks. Instead, he was smart enough to get value for guys he knew were not a fit. Every trade was for a reason - whether it be scheme fit, performance on the field, attitude/culture fit etc. I would be shocked if they traded McCoy. Unless someone blew them away with a trade offer, I just don’t see it happening. Beane’s not dumb. He knows the Bills offense runs thru shady, ans he knows there is no reason to trade him. Shady is bought in, fits any scheme, has a good attitude, is a leader on the team and is still performing at a high level. However, I could see Beane trading Adolphus Washington and/or Shaw Lawson. Why? His cap hit was at its highest last year - $10.375M vs $8.9M this year + $9.05M next year - and also paid out more in actual dollars last year ($7.75M vs $6.35M). The Bills even added incentives to his deal last year. Plus with how high RB salaries are climbing for the top guys, Shady’s deal doesn’t look that bad IMO. Heres a very good article that goes over the theory that Beane is getting rid of Whaley guys. https://www.buffalorumblings.com/2018/6/5/17409612/brandon-beane-sean-mcdermott-doug-whaley-guys-tyrod-taylor-marell-dareus-general-manager-coach It may look like that, but that is not really the case when you break it all down. This article does an excellent job going over all of the details. -
Report: Martavious Bryant released
BillsFan4 replied to Alphadawg7's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Bryant was already suspended 16 games for his last substance abuse violation, and now he has (supposedly) violated it again. It is absolutely a factor, regardless of his talent, because there is a chance he will miss a big chunk of games, and he may not even play a game this season, depending on what the violation was. What would even be the point in signing him if that’s the case? I don’t know that many teams will rush to sign him until they know what the NFL is going to do, aka, whether or not he gets the Josh Gordon treatment (indefinite suspension, since he was already suspended for 1 year (and to get to that point you have to violate the substance abuse policy many, many times)). It all really depends on what the violation was for. That is what I am wondering too. Will it it be another year long ban? Indefinite ban like Josh Gordon got? Or was it a less serious violation? I think teams will need to get some type of clarification from the league office, or wait to see how things play out, before signing Bryant. If it’s a failed drug test, he’s probably done for quite a while. If it’s something liked a missed exam/appointment that invoked the infraction, the punishment will likely be much less serious. -
What whaley players have they moved on from that looks like a big mistake now? Most of the moves, in hindsight, look ok to me. You have to remember that that we don’t know what goes on behind the scenes either. We don’t know how guys are performing in practice, or picking up the offense/defense, or even blowing their assignments unless it is obvious or we know the play call. I don’t really see any moves that were just to spite Whaley. They all seemed centered around performance, scheme and culture fit to me. There are are also a number of Whaley guys left on the roster, too - Washington, Clay, Schmidt, Hughes, Miller, Mills, McCoy, Alexander, Humber, Groy, Lawson. There was actually a really good article on this exact subject (getting rid of whaley guys) on buffalo rumblings a little while back. Check it out. It may help put your mind at ease a bit - https://www.buffalorumblings.com/2018/6/5/17409612/brandon-beane-sean-mcdermott-doug-whaley-guys-tyrod-taylor-marell-dareus-general-manager-coach

When you are a depth or roster bubble player, it doesn’t really matter what you did last season, especially when it was with a totally different OC in a totally different offensive scheme. I liked O’leary and was rooting for him to make the team. But he did not have a very good preseason (or camp, from the reports iirc). For whatever reason, he just didn’t look as effective in this offense and he was outplayed by the other TE’s on the roster.

Yeah, he said that but it doesn’t mean trading to #3 was ever an option. Personally, I don’t think that was the reason. Indy said after the trade that they had other offers but they didn’t want to move down too far. Then on draft day, the Bills tried to trade from #12 to #6 and Indy once again refused. The Bills, obviously, landed at #7. I believe Indy was targeting the guy they drafted - Quenten Nelson, the only real stud OL in the draft, and knew he wouldn’t be there at #12. So, to get to #3 6 weeks before the draft, the Bills most likely would have had to go from #21to #12, then from #12 to #7, then #7 to #3. Has anything like that ever been done? I know for sure it has never been done 6 weeks before the draft. Then on top of all that, after giving up whatever it took to get to #3, they’d have to hope that the Giants didn’t sell the #2 pick, or the Browns didn’t take Darnold, which, at the time of the trade - 6 weeks before the draft, there was a lot of assumption that they would. IMO, the #3 pick was never a real option.

This is going to be a very interesting trade to revisit in 3 years time. It could very well work out well for one or both teams, be a disaster for one/both or land somewhere in the middle. I am not sure why Ryan Pace seems so sold on this current Bears team. Yeah, he added talent this offseason. But they are still an unproven team in my eyes, with an unproven QB that you hope turns into a franchise guy but definitely isn’t there yet. But, his record is something like 14-34 as a GM, so he may not be too worried about 2-3 yearsdown the line atm.

I thought Thomas out-performed O’Leary this offseason/preseason. Plus I guess he is excellent in the meeting room & on the sidelines. There was just an article on it recently. Check it out - https://www.newyorkupstate.com/buffalo-bills/index.ssf/2018/08/bills_tight_end_logan_thomas_using_qb_mindset_to_flourish.html

Any player waiver eligible, you have to put in a claim for and see if that player is awarded to you (determined by the waiver claim order, Bills are #22). Any player you claim has to be put on your 53 man roster. edit - here’s a pretty good explanation - https://www.cincyjungle.com/2018/9/1/17805562/nfl-cuts-2018-explaining-how-waiver-wire-works-claiming-order

Report: Martavious Bryant released
BillsFan4 replied to Alphadawg7's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don’t know if there is much point in even discussing potentially bringing in Bryant until we know how long his suspension is. He was already suspended for an entire season (2016) for repeated substance abuse policy violations. How long will this suspension be? -
I still think it’s Peterman. Allen was great week 2, but I think Peterman won the job fair and square from what I saw of him in preseason. He was consistently the best QB and produced with the 1’s, 2’s and 3’s. I think this just means that they have enough confidence in Allen to put him next in line. He was better than AJ so again, he earns the #2 spot fair and square. McDermott has taken many an opportunity to talk up Nate, too. Kind of reminds me of the way Rex took every chance to talk up Tyrod in 2015 before he won the starting job. Lorenzo Alexander even said he’d start Nate. So it seems that he has the backing of at least some of his veteran teammates. That is just my guess anyway. I may be way off base though. You may be right. It very well could be Allen day 1. Edit - plus as I’ve said all along, it’s much easier to go from Peterman to Allen than vise versa. You really only get 1 shot to start Allen (once he’s in, he’s in. Well most likely, anyway), so you better be sure.

"Big Name" cuts around the league...

Was just coming to post this cut. This is a guy I’d have interest in, but I doubt he is a culture fit here with his reported attitude issues. -

Yeah, I’ve heard people say that if his confidence is that easily shattered, he was likely never your long term answer anyway. That does make a lot of sense. My main worry, as far as his progression as a QB, is stuff like his footwork/mechanics, that is he trying to commit to muscle memory. He has only been working on it a couple months now. It is nowhere second nature for him yet. I am just concerned that being under constant siege is not the best way to accomplish that. Guys tend to revert to what they know best under those type of circumstances. I don't expect the O line to be as bad as they were in preseason though when there’s an actual game plan and scheme to help cover up weaknesses/play to strengths. I also expect that they will get better as the year goes on and they play together more. So hopefully it’ll be less of an issue if/when Allen gets in the games. It makes a lot more sense to turn to Allen than it does to AJ if the season is gone anyway. Might as well get him the experience at that point so he can hit the ground running next year.
-
It makes sense. AJ and Nate are very similar QBs. If Nate can’t have success behind this o line, AJ isn’t likely to either. So, if Nate fails it ain’t like AJ is going to come in and save the season. So at that point you may as well get Allen the reps I gusss. My only concern is hurting Allen’s Confidence and progression as a QB.

Would have been nice to get Mack, but that’s a crazy steep price. Especially with where the Bills might be picking in 2019 and the fact that Mack will easily get $20M or more. Giving Mack $20+M would take up roughly 1/3 of their available 2019 cap space (iirc). Thats a whole lot for 1 player when the Bills have holes almost everywhere on their roster. That also cuts into the talent you can surround Allen with in free agency, and also in the draft, giving up two 1sts and a 3rd. And that to me is priority - getting Allen some help, especially at WR’s and o line. We need to give him the best chance at being successful. He is crucial to any long term success the bills may have. Add in the fact that Mack is already 27 and it doesn’t make a ton of sense for where the Bills are at now, IMO. Chances are Mack will be a very productive player for years to come. But historically, there has been a noticeable drop off in D linemen’s production after their year 7 NFL season (and/or age 31 iirc).
