I find it amusing that Peterman being a 5th round draft pick is such a problem.  If Peterman deserves no chance due to his draft position, then why is a former 6th round pick our starter?

Because he won a three way QB competition between EJ Manuel and Matt Cassel. Not the most difficult thing to do obviously but still more than Peterman has done up to this point. And that's not Peterman's fault really, he hasn't really had the chance yet. I'm sure he will get a shot this preseason to compete with a veteran QB and another rookie.. Taylor also had a really nice season after winning that QB competition. So that is how a former 6th round pick became our starting QB. It wasn't just handed to him.

  2. For me, the problem with Peterman is that it seems to similar to the Trent Edwards situation. I don't want to become attached too closely to a project QB. Edwards was given a prominent role and a long leash despite being drafted in the third round. He never lit up or earned the job. He just benefited from being not as terrible as JP. With that said, I wouldn't be surprised to see us pass on drafting a QB in the first couple of rounds this year. We have a ton of holes that need to be filled. Is anyone in the entire front seven safe? Interior of the o-line is aging. And I think our management likes Peterman a lot more than most of us do.

The pick today was a tough throw for any QB.

On the left hash having to throw to past the numbers on the right side of the field. That is about a 30-35 yard throw and needs to be on a rope. Difficult throw for anybody.

Starting NFL QBs get paid to make that throw. QBs in the NFL that cannot make that throw are back ups.

Better offense then defense I can agree with, but we still only won games where our defense showed up.... Taylor has 3 wins when our D has given up over 20 points the past 3 season (1 per season), 5 when giving up over 17..... He’s had the ball a number of times each season in games in position to win or tie and has came up short (twice this year). Doesn’t matter what the score is, you have the ball in hand late in games you either get the job done or you don’t. That’s the difference in being a good team or not.

When all aspects of the game is going good Tyrod can be relied upon. When you need a big play, successful drive or just need to put the O on your back and simply go out and outscored your opponent Tyrod just doesn’t get the job done.  He can’t be relied upon. This is the most important position in sports and we need better.

I won't say he can't do it because he did do it against Miami last year only to be let down by the defense. Maybe he doesn't do it as often as we like.

As for games when the other team scores over 20 points, if you look at the box scores from the last three years you will see a trend. The defense either shows up or doesn't show up at all. Meaning their were only a handful of games where we held the opponent to between 21-29 points.  Take this year for example.

    27 Tampa Bay W

    34 NYJets L

    47 New Orleans L

    54 Los Angeles L

    23 New England L

    37 New England L

Even top 5 franchise QBs would likely do no better than 2-4 in those six games. In the games where the other team scored between 21-29 Taylor was 1-1. I'm guessing most QBs do not fair well in games when the opponent scores 30+.

  4. It would have been the pass to Zay in Carolina. But Zay. Or the pass before the half to Zay in Atlanta. But Zay again.

His best overall game this year was the Denver game. But as for "wow" moments from Taylor he didn't have a whole lot this year if any. Somewhat surprising because he had a lot over the previous two seasons.

Taylor did not lead this team to the playoffs, our defense did and Shady with a big help from Hauska.  Don’t forget that. We had things go our way which helped get us in, that can not be argued.... If Taylor did a good job we would not be having this discussion. We would not be talking about tiebreakers, we quite possibly finish 11-5 and would be in position to host a playoff game... You can blame that on the stellar performance he displayed against Carolina and Cincinnati. And our passing game is !@#$ing terrible, does that not have anything to do with Taylor?

While there is truth to some of what you say lets also not forget that this years defense was actually statistically worse than prior year defenses under Rex. As you say, it came down to Hauschka and turnovers. More importantly getting them in the games that mattered. Haushcka knocking in a couple 50 yarders against the Saints or Chargers or the defense coming up with a couple of turnovers in both of those games would have been meaningless towards the outcome.

This isn't a case of Bortles being carried by a top 5 defense. Both the offense and defense were below average this year but we made the playoffs. Go figure, especially after having a much better offense the prior two seasons with basically the same poor defense.

  5. I would only trade the farm from 20 to 3 to land Darnold or Rosen. Also, I think we upset the Jags so it will be more like 24 to 3. K.C. will probably beat Tennessee and lost to Pittsburgh. So we will have something like the 24th and 25th picks.

Something tells me these guys like Peterman a lot more than we do. I think they are comfortable keeping the picks and taking a DT, LB and OL with their first three picks.

Meh. I think I’d rather keep tyrod then roll the dice with Smith. He’s another guy who doesn’t want to throw the ball down the field

By traditional QB standards perhaps but he'll still do it more than our current guy. He's basically Taylor but he makes quicker reads. That makes Smith a little better IMO.

The problem with all this is 2 of those qbs might be going back to school.

Which ones? Rosen and Darnold both declared yesterday. Mayfield is a senior so he is coming out. I believe Allen declared. Only one still up in the air is Jackson.

If we make a move I'd kind of like to go with Alex Smith. I don't think we will have enough fire power to get one of the top three QBs. Of all the veteran QBs I think I like Smith the most. Similar to Taylor but still more of a QB.

That would be hard I think.........I guess you need to ask Ravens when they did worse than trading him, by just flat out cut Trent Dilfer.

Dilfer was a liability on that team that had an all time great defense.

Taylor has played with a defense that has been a liability his entire three year tenure in Buffalo. Situations are not that similar other than possibly both being game manager type QBs.

Yeah wrong year to try to blame the defense when your QB passes for under 100 yards in how many games?

and your defense killed in creating TO that you as a QB cannot score on.

Everyone killed Rex for a terrible defense two straight years yet this defense was worse in every category except turnovers. The turnovers dried up and we lost three straight games in the middle of the season. I wouldn't be so high on the defense. This team was lucky to make the playoffs but they should have made it in 2015 or 2016 with a better defense. Both those teams were actually better then this one. But some clutch kicks and some clutch turnovers in the right games during a down year in the conference along with some help got us in this year.

I can't imagine a scenario where there isn't a team out there willing to give him at least a 4yr/60mil or 5yr/75mil contract...

The realistic options would be one or two of the following teams that do not draft a QB early this year:

    Cleveland

    NY Giants

    NY Jets

    Denver

    Arizona

    Washington

    Pittsburgh

    Jacksonville

    Buffalo

Of these, I would cross Cleveland and NY Giants off the list. They will take QBs 1 and 2. I think Washington keeps Cousins so cross them off. But if they don't then cross off one of NY Jets, Denver, Arizona or Jacksonville. Pittsburgh depends on Big Ben retiring or not. Jacksonville, I think they stick with Bortles if Eli doesn't go there.

So it comes down to the Jets, Denver, Arizona, Pittsburgh and Buffalo. But a couple of those teams could have newly drafted first round QBs. And figure at least one of Bridgewater, Bradford or Keenum will come on the market too which will also lower demand some.

    Wrong.

Peterman was the starter that game and the Bills were winning when he got injured. Webb nearly blew the game by not scoring the rest of the game until OT and throwing an INT that set the Colts up for a chance to win.

It sounds like you are blaming the near loss on our Special Teams specialist/back up WR? Shouldn't we blame Peterman for having the bright idea to dive headfirst into the defense with no back up QB on the roster?

  11. The Jags had issues with the Titans this year who like us have a mobile QB. How similar is our offense to the Titans offense? Could it mean success against the Jags? Jags have a good secondary but we don't really have a traditional passing game. No gun-slinging QB. Maybe that benefits us against the strength of their defense?

I see Bortles killing us with is legs on a couple crucial plays though. Think McCown in the second Jets game this season.

There is an argument for McD in the "doing more with less" perspective.

The Rams have all the pieces. They were supposed to be good.

Not really. Goff was viewed as a colossal bust going into this season. Nobody thought the Rams offense would be as good as they have been even with the upgrades because it's all about the QB position.

I still think it is hard to quantify if we have really done more with less. Certainly we have less. But have we done more than the Rams? Rams were dominant this year and look like a team that will be in the mix for years to come.

  13. I believe the two biggest improvements if we go by positional groups was Secondary and Special Teams. Safties and Kicker in particular. Even Schmidt seemed better this year and the CB play was better this year too. Hyde, Poyer and Hauschka were all obvious upgrades from last year.

Taylor should also get a nod simply because of the importance of the position. This was not a situation where the QB was dragging down the rest of the team. This isn't Blake Bortles with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Taylor's never been supported by a top 10 defense, heck, not even top half of the league. Defensive Ranks: 2015 20th, 2016 19th, 2017 26th. Taylor was not without blame for some games but if you look at the season as a whole Taylor was definitely a benefit.
