You are absolutely correct that they don’t need to change anything, but I disagree with the they are figuring it out part.
The only reason the XFL and the USFL survived the first and second years is that TV providers (Fox, NBC, and ESPN) are part of the groups and are providing coverage for the leagues at little to no cost compared to the past leagues.
The USFL saw a healthy drop in viewers from year 1 to year 2 and had average ratings of 600,000 lower than the XFL last year.
The XFL last year averaged around 650,000 viewers, but week 1 was between 1.3 - 1:4 million for an average.
The UFL was formed because both the USFL and XFL saw that they were failing and needed to pool resources and hopefully get a better pool of players by combing the 2 leagues.
Week 1 for the UFL was an average of 1 million viewers - which is well down from what both the XFL and USFL did for week 1 last year. They seem to be hoping that the decrease is due to March madness, but if as in past seasons, they hemorrhage viewers weekly - the average for the UFL will be below 600,000 viewers on a weekly basis by seasons end.
I expect the UFL will survive another year and may continue solely due to the networks having a stake in the league, but they have to be worried that the viewership for week 1 was down so much compared to last year and that the typical trend is a loss of viewers week to week until the championship game which draws back a % of viewers. They really need to see the fan base stabilize.
The unfortunate thing is that it shows that the XFL and USFL were probably watched by the same pool of NFL fans as their ratings were very similar and the UFL is pulling a percentage of those fans, but it is not bringing in newer fans.
And how many viewers does a typical baseball game get? Hockey game? Arena league game? MLS game? Minor league soccer?
Yet, somehow these leagues still survive....go figure.

Didn't see the whole game, but saw the last drive. Pretty nice finish
Been saying it for years now, but they have to change the rules for the UFL. I'd eliminate running completely and maybe even punts. Each team gets 4 downs, if they don't get a first, ball goes to the other team. They have to do something to make these games entertaining. At the very least, shorten the quarters. You can't expect these games to be anywhere near nfl level, yet they play with almost all the same rules.
I don't think they need to change anything. Keep it like pro football because that's what it is. It's not the arena league. Combined, this is the 3rd season for the USFL and 2nd for XFL. That's better than previous spring leagues, so they're figuring it out. They seem to have no trouble getting sponsors, the talent pool is better, and the game quality is better.

Could possibly be an H-back type, but I don't see them doing that. I get what your saying about his ball carrying skills. He sets a tone when he runs with attitude.

Name one!
They've already been posted in this thread, but his attitude and lack of effort when the ball's not coming to him is one mentioned again and again. He may be a great receiver, but that sounds like a guy who isn't going to last under McDermott, justified or not.

Jairus Byrd. Byrd was the word.

Too many red flags for Mitchell.
Legette has the tools, intangibles, and the most important thing for a WR: ball skills.

A lot of love for Jayden Daniels in this thread. I think he'll be a bust. He was very underwhelming for 4 years before his last year in college. He doesn't seem like a leader. He's got the physical tools, but I don't think he has the intangibles of a franchise QB.

His record the past few years is not great. Loved Drew Lock. Loved Zach Wilson. High on Kellen Mond. High on Matt Corral.
Matt Corral's a starting QB in the USFL bro

What if both Josh and Patrick collectively decided to quit the NFL and join the UFL? Josh goes to the Michigan Panthers. Patrick goes to the Memphis Showboats.
What happens next?

I have to let everyone know that I am not going to watch this league.
Thank you. I'm keeping a list.
I titled the list "Da Kool Kidz"

If Ruben Foster stays healthy, he'll definitely be a backup in the NFL again.

Nah. Burrow always skates and Lamar's in the HOF already. Allen gets judged on a different criteria
If both of those guys keep failing to win the Super Bowl, they'll face the same criticism. Jackson is overrated, but still gets plenty of flack. Allen gets plenty of praise along with it. He's not a pariah.

Until he gets that first ring he’ll have that monkey on his back..
Yep. Other great QBs get the same flack. It shouldn't surprise anyone.

Currently watching the DC Defenders vs the San Antonio Brahmas. Wade Phillips is the Brahmas HC and Gregg Williams is the DC for the Defenders.
Brahmas look decent, they had a nice trick play on a punt where the punter threw a 40yd TD pass.
There are some things I like this league. You get to hear the refs and coaches talk a lot more. The Defenders HC was blasting his WR after a key drop. Coaches can challenge any play (don’t know how many challenges they get per game?)
Would be awesome if the NFL had the same system
Based on this opening weekend, the merger seems to have been good for the quality of play.

Unless he does

He's a top 3 QB in the league. Of course he's gonna get plenty of hate.

nostalgia is realbut if I’m an nba GM, a 10 ft fadeaway jumper isn’t getting a first round grade either
Not really nostalgia, since we still have great RB and safety play around the league, but there is a reason they're two of the most undervalued positions.

There certainly are but he is not.
He played in Polynesian bowl which which is high school bowl game for seniors with Polynesian ancestry however.
This is such a an odd thing to bring up and focus on.

Fortunately, you can find very good players at those positions in the third round and on day 3.

And the Battlehawks probably have the best QB in the leagueI don't think so. Top 3 are probably Ta'amu, Perez, Cookus, then maybe AJ. But AJ is not good. I haven't seen anyone say he's the top QB heading into this season. If Houston still had Walker, he'd be one of the best too, but I think he's still with the Browns.

Panthers beat the Battlehawks on an impressive 64 yard field goal from a guy who didn’t placekick in college.
You think he'll get a look from the NFL?

Wouldn't hate it. For some reason I just love me a good RB or safety. When either of those positions is making great plays, it's just a brand of football I enjoy watching.

The great Kelvin Benjamin
You gotta hope he's an Anquan Boldin type. Boldin could take over games with a great QB passing to him because he was smart and physical.
