  1. https://nypost.com/2024/03/26/sports/raptors-jontay-porter-promoted-gambling-on-social-media-in-2021/ I have a feeling this story won't have a happy ending. Jontay Porter, marginal rotational player on a bad NBA team, suddenly has tons of money bet on the over/under on his points per game. Leaves two such games early - one for an aggravating an eye injury, another for illness. The under pays off big. My question (I'm a fan of his brother, Nuggets' Michael Porter Jr): why? You're still an NBA player with a huge minimum salary and even good money to be made in Europe, etc. The NY Post article says he's bragged about his day trading "successes" and other gambling wins. I think I'm seeing my answer ...
  2. I see it being kicked on the standing issue. That's the one issue where you'll get some conservative justices (Gorsuch, Roberts) joining the liberals. It really is an astonishingly weak theory on that front: a woman may take the drug, experience complications that require her to go to an ER, and then be treated by a doctor who objects to performing anything relating to an abortion.
  3. So who's getting that racist Twitter feed and then reposting here? Not me.
  4. Not sure if anyone's pasted this link yet (paywalled, but, you know ...) https://theathletic.com/5366260/2024/03/26/nfl-hybrid-kickoff-rules/?campaign=5888993&source=dailyemail&userId=12924261 Best explanation I've seen. But I still don't have it down. Agreed. The standard kick returner - pure speed guy - won't be the best fit under the new rule. As the article notes, field vision, quickness, improvisation will be key. And as for kickers: the classic "big leg" guy who gets the highest touchback percentage will lose some value, although long field goals are still important. Some team will find a soccer player, Aussie rules football guy, someone else to be the "kickoff specialist" (maybe the kickoff/punter dual role will come back) who is adept at placing the ball in the optimal spot. I'm all for making the game more interesting. Goodbye to the post-TD bathroom/fridge run ...
  5. I call you and I raise "cultural Marxists/Maoists" as example #1275.
  6. You are not stupid. Don't pretend to misunderstand me. - Data/Statistics are not racist. If there's a website/twitter devoted to the demographics of crime, then by all means post the data. - Maintaining a website/twitter devoted to showing a victim of a crime next to the alleged perpetrator, but only when the victim is white and the perpetrator is black, is just a teensy bit racist. Not a subtle distinction. Not "woke." Just common sense.
  7. Self-hating married gay man thinks we need more Republicans who think his marriage is an abomination on TV.
  8. Thanks. That is impressive. I imagine the Alabama reproductive rights/IVF thing really juiced DEM turnout, so there is that anomaly. But from the other side: it's not like that issue is magically going away by November ...
  9. And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. Matthew 6:5-8.
  10. Better than two crackpot parties on the extreme fringe of Americans' political beliefs. I guess some people would prefer (real) communists vs. (real) fascists. That was a fun time back in the day in Spain.
  11. Blah blah blah Hunter's laptop. Blah blah blah Hillary's emails.
  12. I used to get the Evangelical Christian-Republican thing. Bush 43 was very clear about his misspent youth, alcohol dependency, and ultimate born again experience that made him a better man, at least in his personal life. Christians are all about forgiving provided it is a heartfelt conversion. We are all sinners after all. But has Trump ever admitted that he did anything wrong? I mean, not legally (I get that he defends himself against formal charges), but even in his personal life? Any expression of remorse for obviously cheating on his wife? For doing tawdry things like having sex (which he denies) with an "adult film actress" (by definition, someone who has sex for money)? Anything? For calling people names, mocking disabilities, anything? This is the most un-Christian so-called Christian in America.
  13. Off to a rip-roaring start!
  14. Yeah, Axios is "Maoist." You guys need to get out more.
  15. Thanks. I will note that "Asian" is such a huge category that it is almost meaningless. It will encompass South Asians (India/Pakistan/Bangladesh), Southeast Asians (Vietnam/Laos/Cambodia/Thailand), East Asians (China), Japanese, Koreans, etc. I will say I've personally never encountered something like an "Indian American criminal street gang," whereas I have encountered may such gangs composed of other Asians. Just my two cents. It seems to exist for the sole purpose of pointing out the race of the alleged perpetrator in specific crimes. Not for the purpose, say, of "correcting" MSM sites that hide the race of the alleged perps. No. Simply to focus on the idea that "lookee here, another black man committed a crime against a white person." Again: racist.
  16. Thanks. Good analysis. I'll read the whole thing. With respect to the final element (for the purpose of providing an election benefit) - timing is key here. It is probably going to rest on circumstantial evidence, which I believe will show that the hush money payment and recording of it were deliberately delayed until after the election. I've always believed it was a silly case to bring since it isn't of earth shattering importance. But on the legal theory, I think it is likely to fly. The questions have to do with the level of proof of that final element that turns it into a felony.
  17. Thanks. I'll move that one to the front of my queue.
  18. True. Their are mixed signals in the markets since gold is typically just a hedge against inflation. But my point is that relative to basically all other world economies, the U.S. finds itself in first place. That ain't nuthin
  19. OK, I checked out the Twitter profile that started this. It is racist. It's whole point is to juxtapose photos of crime victims next to mugshots of their alleged black perps. I can't see any nonracist reason for doing this. I imagine the account holder thinks it's some kind of counterbalance to MSM websites hiding the identity of alleged perps. I don't agree with that, but this is no way to "balance" it. It is a racist account by design.
  20. I suggested that a mindless racist might create such a profile of "an Indian man."
  21. And Japan must be kicking the dollar's ass too. I keep reading about their economic recovery. No. https://www.wsj.com/finance/currencies/yen-hits-34-year-low-as-hopes-for-boj-rate-increases-fade-d3d0da2d?mod=hp_lead_pos3 If anything, all of this suggests the dollar is too strong, making imports cheaper. Devaluing the dollar would fix that, but that typically means keeping interest rates low or even lowering them.
  22. I'd agree that it's disproportionately low. But I've been acquainted with a number of Indian American criminals over the course of my career ...
  23. Good Lord. It's an analogy. If using a stereotypical profile of "an Indian man" would be racist, then using a stereotypical profile of a "black man" is too. (And yes, I know that the turban/beard relates to Sikhs, a small minority of the overall Indian population. That's kind of my point)
  24. As far as the U.S. dollar value goes relative to other major world currencies (the DXY): - up 7.46% over 6 years - up 1.63% over the last year Everyone's all worked up into a lather about China. So the dollar has tanked vs. the Chinese yuan during the Biden presidency, right? Wrong. Up about 12% vs. the yuan in the last 3 years.
  25. Doc, haven't you told us you are and Indian (South Asisan) American? Do you think it would be ok if the name of the alleged perp sounded Indian and this tweeter stuck a generic silhouette of a guy with a beard and a turban next to a pic of the victim?
