  1. Yeah, I thought the national anthem was bad, but it is every year. The NFL hired Christina Aguilera to sing the anthem, because she is who she is, good or bad. They got what they hired. She has vocal skills, though her style is not anything to my liking, I can't see vilifying her for it. Honestly, and I will bet this is true of most here, I tuned out Christina almost immediately, never noticed the flubbed line...

As for the half time show, last year, it was common pop culture humor to rank on the Who for beig old, "can't we they get anyone from this millenium?" So, we got that, and it turns out, it was even worse...maybe the Super Bowl should just avoid this crap altogether...

At my little party, which only includes those who I have Bills season tickets with, we were way too busy debating if she is hot or not to notice the flubbed line....

  2. Aguilera did butcher the song. The over the top Mariah Carey esque approach is horrible for me and messing up the words is just stupid.

However, it is just a song at its base and to the extent it can have special reverence that actually stems from the circumstance and not from the simple words themselves. I make no personal demands that anyone sing it exactly as it was written but only that one make changes which work. Aguilera's rendition is not bad because it changed the original words it was bad because it was not good communication, sharing, entertainment, etc.

My personal favorite national anthem was a personal one when a bar in Greenwich village I was in to watch the US Hockey team beat the Russians in the 80 Olympics spontaneously sang the anthem.

The best performance of the anthem I have seen was by Marvin Gaye at an early 80s NBA All Star game > youtube.com/watch?v=QRvVzaQ6i8A < Ironically, he probably changed more words than Aguilera (but at least his changes made sense and evoked a sense of reverence in most. He simply showed his mastery of music where he employed a beat timing which was appropriate to the song but unusual in its presentation.

Personally, I think America the Beautiful (in particular the Ray Charles version) would be a far better national anthem than the Star Spangled Banner (easier to sing and speaks to glories of the land that we love rather than the more martial Banner, but either can work in the hands (and pipes) of a good artist.

I would have been calling for the traditional singing like everybody else today, except that my favorite is the one you posted. Marvin Gaye's rendition is so awesome.......Magic Johnson said nobody wanted to play basketball. They just wanted to keep listening to Marvin.

  3. I know this is unpopular but I have to agree somewhat. I thought he was over rated. If I remember correctly he was in the league 7 years before he even did anything. I know he played behing Joe but he took a long, long time to develope. I think most players would rather face Young than Montana. By the time Marino, Kelly, Brady, Manning, Elway, Rothlesberger, Montana, Warner were in the league 7 years they had gone to SB's. A good player? Yes eventually. Arguably the best player? No way, HOF...not before Andre.

Shannon Sharpe, Michael Irvin, Lynn Swann, Dan Dierdorf????? I don't understand these.

My memory of Young on the Bucs was him being very talented on a horrible team. And, then he did play a lot during his "backup" years to Montana.

  4. Steve Young. IMO, was arguably the best quarterback of all-time. If I HAD to pick one guy, he would be it. He did everything great. Threw long, short, for accuracy, could run long or short, speed and power, could scramble, throw on the run, and was a winner. There wasn't anything he couldn't do, and was excellent at all of them. Easily the best all around quarterback, one could argue that someone like Montana won more championships, but Young won the SB, too.

I agree. He was unreal.....I would want to face Montana instead of him.

  5. This is the same logic as saying you should draft QBs in the 6th round because they might become Brady. Plus if you think Holmes was the reason the Steelers won the SB, you're delusional. Elite/ highly drafted receivers don't win championships.

I don't think Houston is regretting their decision.

  6. I have never once heard the Rockets get criticized for taking Hakeem. The Sonics get blasted for taking Bowie, though. I was blasting them at the time they did it. Taking the big guy instead of the more talented guy. I said this is like the Braves taking John Hummer instead of Calvin Murphy with their first ever pick.

  7. My understanding is if I am taking a narcotic of any kind, I do not consider myself sober, because of the mind-altering aspect (side effect?) of narcotics. Tylenol and Advil are non-narcotic, and so would not compromise my sobriety.

But each person really defines their own sobriety, because, really, no one else cares what we do!

So, if I'm drunk as a skunk, but claim that I'm sober, then I am?.......Other than that, I agree. Tylenol, Advil are not going to compromise sobriety. Vidodin, etc. would.

And to say you're sober, except for pot makes no sense......Not the first time I've heard it, though.

  8. i do believe Tom would step in to buy the team if there was a concern that the franchise would move.

it's one of the reasons i said on 'GR a few months back that i'm more confident of the team staying than going. ... and after my interview with Phil Lind in November, i'm more confident that the team stays in western new york. during the 'GR interview i think i said 65-35 the team stays in the region (including Toronto). i'd say that it's about 65-35 maybe even 70-30 that the team doesn't leave WNY.

Do you have a link to your interview with Phil Lind? I'd like to read that.
