Man, the text on that is depressing.
I know. I thought about that one, but I hate that one because of what happened after.

I kinda liked seeing Bertie when he had teeth. And hair.

I thought about putting that one up.....But, some love for the Braves, also. I remember the exact second that this was in my mailbox. I was so excited to have the Brave be on the cover and for the playoffs to start:

Well, just from what you see on TV and media you really don't understand what's really going on over there. You hear about bombings of hills and mountains but you never really get a first hand look at how the war is being fought. It seemed to be a stalemate in this region for some time before the 2nd platoon entered the area and the documentary began. I guess I just never really understood how modern wars have been fought but after the documentary you get a decent look at how things work over there, how the soldiers feel about what they're doing, and their interaction with the civilians in the area. The captain engages in a sit-down every so often with the elders of the villages from the area and tries to create some peace and some support for what they're trying to do. The captain is not a negotiator or mediator, he's a soldier and he responds as a soldier would to the questions/comments that the elders have...which seems to create some tension and hostility. I was basically saying it was an interesting movie and it opened my eyes to the way things really are over there.
Now I may have to get it and put The Wire, etc. on hold. That sounds really interesting....I thought you had meant that there was some other reason we were really fighting the war, than trying to go after Al Queda, so I was wondering what that was.
But, what you described sounds like something I'd really like to see.

I will be on days next week and with the temps falliing into the below zero range for a spell this weekend, things should "knit" up very well if there isn't continous traffic to cut the ice up. I will be sure to take pictures, especially with the barges plying through and busting it up... We have bubblers going to slow the ice from wrecking havoc opening and closing the machinery.
The one problem with the warm and cold is that it busts up and then gorges up in layers when it refreezes. I just had a 3,000 HP tow boat try and push 4 barges down river... It took him over an hour to round the corner and get about 1500 feet towards the lock... They go full throttle and once the ice stops them, they have to back up and try again. If it gets real bad, they have to uncouple and "blaze trail" with just the tow (tug) boat. Winter will get so bad sometimes that the 9 foot deep channel will fill with ice chunks like a "slurppy" from top to bottom of the river.
Yet... Amazingly once the warm (and rain) hits... Things melt quickly and everything flows around the bend down river... That bend acts like a giant sink drain trap when it is cold and icy.
It's nice that they have water activity during the winter. I can't imagine that there is any kind of commerce going on in the Buffalo River, etc.

I asked a couple soldiers current and former about how the war is being handled. One didn't say much, and one said get the politics out of it and let the fighting men "conduct" a war.
I think you would hear that from the soldiers of any war. At least any since WWII and probably even then.
What I'm more curious about is what conclusion Wooderson got about what the makers of the movie were saying when he said this "it will really make you think about what this war is all about." I'm not taking a side on it. I just want to more educated on what is all about.

I love that cover. Also, props to dr z for his super predictions. i cant remember the last time anyone got those right. perhaps this year if green bay wins. i know they were a hot pick, and both afc teams are common picks.
Not sure if that was the year, I actually think it was in the late 80s, but Dr. Z picked every single playoff team. That was best prognostication ever!.....Although like you say this one is impressive. The Bills would be the easy pick for '91, but the Redskins? They ended up having an all-time great team that year, but how did he know. They were 10-6 the year before, and Giants and Niners were the two teams that dominated the NFC that year.
-
I remember that one well......There was a naked chick in there. It was when Evel Kneivel tried jumping the Snake River Canyon and there was a picture of the general mayhem at the scene. Like a Woodstock style rock fest.....And, they were passing around a naked chick in air......Pretty impressive to a 12 year old before the Internet.
I'm sure I still have it. I saved all my Buffalo related SIs.

When we picked Bruce #1 in '85, neither I nor anybody else thought "We are on our way!".........But, when Kelly came on board in '86, that is exactly what I and everybody else thought. And, we were!

LMAO at your skewed attempt of listing a bunch "bust" lists that actually provided no information of any kind to how often a QB busts in relation to other players, specifically DL.
So, here is a real report specifically addressing the myth that high draft pick QB's bust at a higher rate than high draft pick DL. Literally was the first one to pop up on google...isnt google great
Link to real report about bust rates
In case you refuse to read it, it actually shows DL have a higher bust rate than QB's...also, teams that hit with a QB go on to have a better winning percentage and more playoff appearances on average than teams that hit on DL.
Here is the TRUTH about the QB bust rate: Its MISTAKENLY believed to be much higher than it is given the HIGH PROFILE nature of the QB position, the larger contracts, and the fact that you cant hide a busted QB as they touch the ball on every offensive play. Dfensive players can struggle without drawing as much attention like a QB. So there is all this misguided myths (see your entire history in the thread for example) that some how QB's bust more than any other position, and its simply not accurate.
See above...clearly, this statement by you is something you decided to pull out of your back side considering its factually false.
Your list actually is better. The list I clicked into from the multi-list post was called biggest busts of all time. And, it's just really a popularity thing. Meaning the better you were known coming out of college, the bigger bust you were considered. And, that's why I asked how Andre Ware could be something like the 6th biggest bust of all time when he was drafted number 7 in the draft. Surely, there were washouts who were picked much higher than him.
Your list is actually a little generous to the DTs. I would call Big Daddy a bust and not a hit.

Every bull calf I get has an expiration date the day he is born. This is true to most farms, especially dairy. The females make babies or milk, the bulls burgers, steaks and roasts. The dairy breed is the most important, you only need roughly 1 bull (aged 3 yrs) for every 30-40 cows. All bull calves are steered usually the day they are born or shortly after to prevent the hormones from bulking up the bad meats (neck, shoulders, etc). Most of your ground beef and cheap beef is Holstein or Jersey. You'll never ever know the difference because there is none. The Angus breed has done a tremendous job marketing themselves to believe it is the best; but quite simply, it's not. It's the cheapest. An Angus steer is fully grown around 1,000 lbs. Most other popular breeds in the country, continental, finish out around 1,300+. At around 2-3 lbs/day in growth that's an extra 100 days to finish that animal out and a much higher cost in feed. It is cheaper to take an Angus to full size and lop its head off.
You've seen males before, but they're steers and do not look like big giant bulls. Steers live about 2 years, females will live 15 and drop calves every year until they can't. When a cow doesn't have a calf inside of her she's inside of a freezer.
I just had to google to find out what steers are. So, how do they make the decision on which ones are lucky enough not to be steered??

Guess I have to spell it out... there are a shitload of fist round QB busts littering the NFL, and way more of them than D linemen especially within the top 10 busts of all time.
Guess you need to re-read my question. I know you're on a rampage about not wanting to pick a QB, but that's not what I was asking.
-
There are what they are my friend... fact is, keep looking at these lists... they have a very common theme...
-
I've never got this. So the male of the species is the bull and I don't even know if I've ever seen one of those in real life. And, the female of the species is the cow, of which I've seen a million.............How did that all work out, where there seems to be like 1000:1 female/male ratio...........And, where do I sign up?

These lists are EVERYWHERE... OMG too damned easy.
Shouldn't these lists be titled the most famous busts of all time?
Why would Lawrence Philips at number 6 and Andre Ware be bigger busts than the busts at higher picks?

Good education?

Has anybody ever seen Restrepo? It was a movie that came out last summer about the fighting in the Korengal Valley in Afghanistan during 2007. Sal Guinta was in one of the platoons in this valley. The documentary follows 2nd platoon from their deployment into the valley to the day that they leave. It's an eye opening movie and really hits you emotionally. I recommend it to anyone, it will really make you think about what this war is all about and how it's being fought. It's on Netflix OD for you instant queue folk.
I doubt that I'll end up watching this. I got The Wire for Christmas and am making my way through that and The Pacific.
What I'm wondering about is what do they say about what this war is all about and how it's being fought?

Sounds like a great guy and it's great that he still lives in Buffalo:
Edit - I didn't realize that he only played one season with the Bills. I just looked him up now. I wonder why I remember him so clearly.
-
You do realize that his league is littered with complete and total busts at every single defensive postion as well right? You act like a first round QB is a guaranteed bust while a defensive or O Line player is very safe...the busts rates are not that much different. Funny how 75% of the QB's in the playoffs were taken in the first 32 picks.
Let me paint you 2 different scenarios, and lets see what that looks like for the Bills of 2010. In each case we will use the exact same roster as we had but with one difference:
Team A: This 2010 roster with the addition of which ever guy you think is the best DL in all of football...lets say Ngata for instance (or which ever one you think is best).
OR
Team B: This 2010 roster with the addition of one of the best QB's in football like Rodgers or Manning.
Which team wins more games in 2010? Team A or Team B?
Its not even a tough question...anyone with any common sense clearly knows that Team B hands down wins more games than Team A in 2010.
PS: If we held a draft where every player in the NFL was in it, the first 5 picks of the draft would be QB's (Manning, Rodgers, Rivers, Brees, Brady) and very likely would go QB at least the first 7 or 8 picks with guys like Big Ben, Vick, etc. Theres a reason for that...
Case Closed...next topic
This is my point in asking how many guys we get to pick at #3. If we can get a whole defensive line with one pick, I'd agree that we have to go D. But, a QB is so much more important than any one player anywhere else on the field.
-
How many players do we get to take at #3?

I work a swing shift at the lock. Right now I am on midnights, 0000 to 0800. Just got back from locking a tow boat up with 4 barges. A bit icey today... I guess better than snow because we would be plowing all night. The river is still pretty jammed up with about 8" of ice... Channel is cut though... Barges have been keeping it open... Yesterdays warmer temps loosened things up a bit:
That is very cool......I love pictures of water. I love pictures of winter. Therefore, I really love pictures of water in the winter!

As the Colts haven’t yet learned and the Rams never did, scoring gets you into the playoffs, but defense gets you the Lombardi Trophy.
Didn't both the Colts and Rams win a Super Bowl?

Yes...
I was using slang... When I am outside... Slang for the structure is called a "wall"... On the prints of the place they call it an esplanade... Again... Sorry for putting in slang... Think of it like when you pass through Black Rock on the Niagara Section between Amherst Street and Austin Street... It is one giant wall/wide esplanade.
There is the "short wall" or "I-wall" (looks like an "I") and then there is the "long wall" or "river wall"... Upper "guide wall" or lower "guide wall."
I use Sirius in the car and at home... Still using my old Sportster between the two docking stations. I like the music channels and then rip off of that when I want the song... There is always music playing in the house. Yet, now that I have a wireless sound card from my computer to stereo rig... I find myself listening to free stuff off the computer. Listening to the games would make me too up tight!!
True about the Rick J thing... It is the one thing I miss, would also raise my level of intensity! When my son was 5, one of his quotes about Rick J was:
"He gets paid to blurt out?"
I probably should drop the sat radio and lose the bill... Only a small bit a month and still sorta keeps me "legal!"
Cool - what do you do on that wall? (I now see why you have strong opinions and knowledge about the Great Lakes!)
-
Dumbest ever huh? Lol... you don't read these boards much do you?
Honestly... The OP states that I think we get more impact at a D position at #3 than with Newton or Mallett. Hell, if the D player we need isn't there at #3, then trade the hell down, pick up the "savior" at 10-15 and get some extra picks (to use hopefully on D, TE or OL) I also mentioned a "franchise QB" and everyone ran off with a first round pick at QB... they conviniently leave out the fact that there a way more first round QB busts than their are that are worthy of that pick, but if they leave that out, it makes their arguments better, so whatever. We SUCK at stopping the run... SUCK at it. I don't care if Jesus was playing QB for us, when you give up 200+ yds on the ground for HALF OF YOUR GAMES, you will remain well below .500
Yeah, it's definitely not the dumbest ever, by far. I just picked that one to reply to.
The thing is if Jesus was playing nose tackle, we'd still get killed. Now, if we can draft him and his 12 disciples, all in the third pick, I'm all for that!
My only point really is that one QB makes up for a lot of other positions. You only get one pick at #3.....My best example is the '08 season. We won every time Trent played good. We lost every time he sucked or didn't play at all.
