Agreed--I think ultimately he'll a slot between Haden and Maxwell at $11M AAV
It wouldn't surprise me if the order of signing went Richie-Gilmore-Glenn. Unfortunately the first domino needs to fall in the next week or so, and the next in rapid succession
That seems like a reasonable order. Richie seems the most logical choice for the first deal. It'll be the smallest of the three contracts and he probably has the fewest options.
-
It would be good if they reworked contracts to free up space as they go......
You have to be careful about that. It can lead to some real problems in future years.
-
haden was so good before this year. One of the best IMO. He got hurt, and concussed, but even before early in the season he just looked bad. Wonder what happened there.
No idea. Concussions? Or some other injury maybe?
-
Yup. And we also would have to do it at the same time as we were trying to replace Mario and find a compliment to Watkins. Plus other needs like LB and RT. That's a tough shopping list for one offseason. The problem is then we have to replace him and do we do that in the 1st round? If we keep him we can get a defensive playmaker. If we get rid of Glenn we better nail that replacement cause if not then TT could look bad and this team bottoms out.
That's a good point. You very well may be right. I'd say that Haden was the better player leading up to their deals, although not by a lot. And for some reason Haden really sucked this season. Not sure what happened to him.I think as a top 10 pick Gilmore's contract will be closer to Haden territory than Smith, but we shall see

That's pretty close to what I was thinking, although mine was just a little lower. I used Jimmy Smith's contract from last year and added a bit for inflation. Smith got 5 years, $48M. Was thinking 5 years, $50M-$52M for Gillmore. The Ravens really kept Smith's first year cap hit low though - only $3.6M. If Gillmore got 5 years, $50M with a $15M signing bonus and a first year salary of $1M they Bills would lower his 2016 cap hit from $11M to $4M.I did a calc on this a few weeks back, and I assumed a 5-year deal worth $55M ($35 gtd) for Gilmore. First year cap hit was around $8M; 2nd year was $10M. He didn't get back to $11M until year 3, which was the break point of the deal--also happens to be the last year of Darby's contract, so they would be in a position to keep either (but likely not both) from that point forward.
-
Why? They'll have enough money to sign the players they want to after a few cap related moves. Cutting Mario and restructuring Clay's roster bonus to a signing bonus will free up $20 million by itself
I could be wrong but couldn't they also lower Gilmore's 2016-cap number if they get him on a long term deal this off-season too? I know his number is something like $11 million this season because its the 5th year option on his rookie deal.
Yes on Gilmore. A long term deal would almost certainly lower his 2016 hit somewhat. Some significant cap space is going to get freed up, but people will be surprised how quickly it gets used up. Also you have to start looking toward 2017 because contracts with low first year hits rise quickly.

False. To win this game the Broncos will need some great offensive play so it'll likely go to Manning. I don't see that happening, but it is Manning's last game and it is Carolina's players first trip to this big of a game so you never know.

Did you read the Wells report? It does not portray Incognito as a victim. He was the prime instigator. To say that he is a "scapegoat" now is revisionist history. What are you basing this on? Is it because he is now a Buffalo Bill?
I actually read through all the released texts. I don't know what happened outside of those, but I can tell you what they led me to believe. Richie incognito did not seem to be bullying Martin, but did come off as an absolutely terrible person and a complete flaming A-hole. In fact if you look at his history, Richie incognito has worn out his welcome (to put it mildly) everywhere he's been. He's probably still a terrible person. I'd sure put money on that. But he's an excellent OG and the Bills need one (okay, two) of those. I'm OK with him continuing to be an excellent OG for the Bills for couple more years if he keeps his nose clean for that period of time. The Bills should protect themselves contractually in the event he screws up again, however.

That would be huge. 2 years at $5M-$6M per, I'd guess.

There is no QB worth a 1st round pick this year and to reach for a EJ or a JP would be a monumental mistake.
You don't think Goff is worth a first? Obviously he won't be there for Buffalo, but he sure looks like a first round QB prospect to me.
-
LMAO. WTF?
I've NEVER heard him even mentioned as being the best college QB of all time. Based off what. His broke brother who's now trying to live through his brother??
Actually it was Derek who said David belonged in that conversation. It was a fairly recent interview and maybe he was just trying to show his brother a little love or something. But no one has been agreeing with him and quite a few have pointed out how ridiculous of a statement it was. It was kinda like if he'd said that Jessica Alba was in consideration for the most beautiful woman ever. Sure, she is (was?) attractive and all, but someone would have to be a huge fan of, very specifically, Jessica Alba to even consider putting her on that list.

Who was a slam dunk top 10 pick / potential top 5 pick before the injury. Drafting a guy solely based upon filling a need or only worrying about production in year 1 is how bad teams stay bad.
Preach on brother!!
AMEN!!!

To me, the only surprise among those picks is Miller
Yeah, he's certainly the biggest. I've just seen a very wide range of opinions on where Rankins, Butler, and Maliek Collins will go. I guess that's expected this early in the process though.
Miller has too much raw talent to fall. Some team will fall in love with his potential and take him relatively high. I doubt he makes it to Buffalo's 2nd round pick so he'd probably only be in play with a trade. 19 is too high IMO.

The part some of us are having trouble with is: "Carr is in the discussion of best college quarterbacks of all time".
Yeah I understand but to call David Carr one of the best QBs ever to play college football is a bit of an exaggeration. I mean obviously he was good enough to get drafted #1 overall but come on. He played out at Fresno St. They had a decent team but they were an afterthought in the grand scheme of big time college football.
Ah. My bad. I guess I'd already moved on mentally from that statement. Unless you're asking his brother, Derek, David Carr doesn't show up much in that conversation.

You're missing some details on this. The 2015 revenue from NBC for Thursday Night Football was $300M so the $450M combined revenue from NBC and CBS is only a $150M increase. The players' share is between 47% and 48.5%. That amount is divided by 32 teams. So we've got $150M*.485/32= $2.27MUnsure when it goes into effect but the NFL just reached a deal with NBC and CBS to broadcast Thursday night games and will be getting $450 million over the course of the deal, unsure how long it was for...this will be adding to the cap pool but not sure how soon...
EDIT: deal was for this year only.
So cap either is going up $14 mil or $7 mil depending on how much goes towards the cap...
So that's a $2.27M per team cap increase (or $2.2M on the low end if 47% is used). It's not nothing, but it isn't some huge increase.

Repeated the trick again with Locker in Tennessee too. He runs a very old school drop back and throw deep offense that is ill suited to the modern NFL when pass rushers have the edge over offensive linemen and everyone else is moving to quick passing offenses that get the ball out fast. His lines in Cleveland, Houston and Tennessee were terrible.
That is all true. I'm not sure what his responsibilities in Buffalo are, but I'd prefer he'd not be big part of TT's development team. Maybe he's learned from the past and is a good coach now, but I do not have confidence in him due to that track record.
-
Huh???
The OP is talking about David Carr of the Texans, not his younger brother, Derek Carr, of the Raiders.

The same Chris Palmer that's part of the Bills' coaching staff http://www.buffalobills.com/team/coaches/palmer-chris/abd87091-3782-4fad-a984-c61f374f91ea
Yes it is. Obviously he doesn't have the same power here as when he was head coach in Cleveland or offensive coordinator in Houston. Maybe he's in a role where he can do some good here. Honestly, I had forgotten he was on the staff.
-
He took an absolute beating in houston. He had no o line at any point.
He was good in college but he's nowhere near any of the great college qbs.
Yeah, he couldn't overcome Chris Palmer's coaching and team construction. Palmer imposed upon Carr a career death sentence by defensive mauling - exactly like he did to Couch in Cleveland.

I can't believe people really think a team with their balls to the bandsaw when it comes to the cap would cut a QB for literally $0 in savings AND then pay his replacement. Let it go guys, its not going to happen this year.
$1.6M guaranteed salary, but his contract has offsets. So if another team were to sign him that pay in 2016 would be deducted from the cap hit. Really, it's a minimal amount when you're talking about upgrading the back up QB position on a team with a smallish starting QB. A better backup last season equates to at least one more win. That's not where you want to start penny pinching.
This was what I thought, but given the tightness of the cap and the fact they are on the hook for EJ's money regardless I think EJ gets one more year as a backup.
I am also convinced the Bills are going to draft a guy. I'm not sure it is going to be the high pick a lot of us want.... but I think they are going to take a late round guy to compete for the backup job.
I expect them to draft a guy for sure
-
Wow. That's a lot to infer from Rex going to the Pro Bowl instead of the Senior Bowl.
-
He's walking away from like 16 mill. this year. Body must be wrecked. Or he's sick of Michigan. Respect either way.
Awesome

I assumed the contract could be from any team. And a good second guess is a one year transition or franchise tag.If the Bills acquire a QB in this years draft or next years draft that they deem can be their guy, my guess would be that Tyrod won't see a second contract.
I think that Bill Polian piece about the Bills gleemed some insight on how the Bills view Taylor......and I think he's a bridge QB.

As I said previously, the players on the team were going to privately support the guy who could help them win over the guy who couldn't hack it in the league regardless of any other factors. That was obviously Incognito, who was probably their best offensive lineman. They knew Martin wasn't cutting it. Of course they wanted Incognito to stay, but it became impossible to support him publicly. He's not the first, last or worst slimeball that they'll play with. As long as the slimeball in question can help a team win, it'll usually get overlooked.
