Is this terrorism? https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2023/10/31/israel-war-hamas-gaza-news-palestine/ Strikes on the Jabalya refugee camp in northern Gaza killed and injured hundreds of people Tuesday, according to the Gaza Health Ministry and the director of Gaza’s Indonesian hospital. Exact figures for the dead and injured have yet to be determined amid ongoing rescue efforts. Footage from the scene streamed by Al Jazeera showed dozens of people digging through rubble to reach trapped people. Amid an air campaign, Israel is pressing deeper into Gaza with tanks and soldiers as its ground offensive expands in the densely populated Palestinian enclave. The Israeli military said Tuesday it was “striking in all parts of the Gaza Strip,” particularly on the north, despite warning residents to move south for shelter. -

Cater and Trump, both one termers? Joe? We shall see. Carter was a navy veteran. He honorably served President James Earl "Jimmy" Carter graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1946 with distinction, after which he was assigned to USS Wyoming (E-AG 17) as an ensign. After completing two years of surface ship duty, Carter applied for submarine duty. He served as executive officer, engineering officer, and electronics repair officer on the submarine SSK-1. When Admiral Hyman G. Rickover (then a captain) started his program to create nuclear-powered submarines, Carter wanted to join the program and was interviewed and selected by Rickover. Carter was promoted to lieutenant and from 3 November 1952 to 1 March 1953, he served on temporary duty with the Naval Reactors Branch, U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, Washington, D.C., to assist "in the design and development of nuclear propulsion plants for naval vessels." From 1 March to 8 October 1953, Carter was preparing to become the engineering officer for USS Seawolf (SSN-575), one of the first submarines to operate on atomic power. However, when his father died in July 1953, Carter resigned from the Navy and returned to Georgia to manage his family interests. Carter was honorably discharged on 9 October 1953 and transferred to the retired reserve at his request with the rank of lieutenant. The Seawolf-class submarine Jimmy Carter (SSN-23) is named for the 39th president. -

As to Christianity, it has totally been used as a tool of hate far and wide. The democratization of the western word has put a break on Christian hate, though it still rears its ugly head. The Tree of Life Massacre in Pittsburg, for instance, was a white nationalist who quoted the bible to support his murder rampage. -

We already knew this Bibi, we saw the war in Ukraine taking place. Now its a real problem? The War of Civilization!! I get that Iseal is facing existential threats. On more than simply the batlefield. 20% of population is Palestinian and they do the work there. https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-battle-of-civilization-in-gaza-israel-hamas-3236b023 Until recently, many believed that the promise of progress in the 21st century would enable us to move beyond the barbaric horrors of the past toward a brilliant future—that we could go about our comfortable lives and that evil will simply pass us. It will not. The horrors that Hamas perpetrated on Oct. 7 remind us that we won’t realize the promise of a better future unless we, the civilized world, are willing to fight the barbarians. The barbarians are willing to fight us, and their goal is clear: Shatter that promising future, destroy all that we cherish, and usher in a world of fear and darkness. -

I disagree. While I am not one to defend religion generally, I think the problem is lack of democracy. Authoritarian governments turn religion to a hateful tool to divide people. -

This is just terrible and sickening. I wish this war would just stop, but I get it has a life of its own, https://www.wsj.com/articles/israel-hamas-jews-pogroms-russia-u-s-europe-germany-anti-semitism-1a74109c The disturbing fact of the past month is that Jews are under attack not only in Israel and not only by Hamas. The weeks since the barbaric Oct. 7 Hamas invasion of Israel have witnessed physical assaults on Jews the world over, including in the U.S. and Europe. This most modern of pogroms—global, televised, politicized—demonstrates exactly what is at stake as Israel ramps up its defensive war against Hamas in Gaza. Americans like to believe such things couldn’t happen in the U.S. They have. The Anti-Defamation League last week reported a 388% increase in anti-Semitic incidents from Oct. 7-23 compared with the same period a year ago. The 312 incidents the ADL recorded include a car carrying individuals with Palestinian flags allegedly swerving toward a Jewish family and several alleged assaults by pro-Palestinian protesters. The ADL tally counts 109 anti-Israel rallies that featured support for Hamas or violence against Jews in Israel. These and too many other incidents to count put paid to the notion that one can distinguish anti-Zionism from anti-Semitism since Oct. 7. If protesters wanted to burn Israeli flags in a fit of wrong-headed pique about a two-state solution, that is one thing. Only anti-Jewish hate can explain how synagogues, children and airports are targets of this outrage. -

The Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem blamed Israel Tuesday for the overnight bombing of its cultural centre in Gaza City and condemned the "direct and unjustified attack". "This attack represents a stark embodiment of Israel's unwarranted determination to destroy the civil infrastructure and social service centres, as well as shelters for civilians trapped in the besieged enclave," the church said in a statement. An AFP journalist saw the ruins of the Orthodox cultural centre and school in Gaza City, with smoke still rising from the rubble. The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the strike when contacted by AFP. https://www.barrons.com/news/orthodox-church-condemns-israel-for-bombing-its-gaza-centre-1edadd60 -

Well, this will sure move the world forward 😟 More children killed in Gaza than in global conflicts annually over past 4 years, Save the Children says From CNN Staff The number of children reported killed in Gaza during Israel’s military campaign over the past three weeks has surpassed the annual number of children killed in armed conflict globally in each of the past four years, according to Save the Children. More than 3,000 children have been reported killed in Gaza since October 7 by the enclave's Hamas-controlled health authorities. https://www.cnn.com/middleeast/live-news/israel-hamas-war-gaza-news-10-30-23/h_4ca9897b094d242a3994b1e7b901ebf1 -

Crazy stuff https://www.cnn.com/middleeast/live-news/israel-hamas-war-gaza-news-10-30-23#h_76166b7d40c52307181d55ebbcb44e45 47 min ago Hamas releases new hostage video showing 3 women From CNN’s Eyad Kourdi, Lianne Kolirin, Amir Tal, Hadas Gold, Adam Levine, Stephanie Halasz and Richard Allen Greene Hamas on Monday released a short video showing three women who are believed to be captives held by the Palestinian militant group since its terror attack on Israel on October 7. The hostage video is only the second released by Hamas since more than 200 people were taken into Gaza. It appears as intended to undermine Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with pointed criticism over his leadership by the detained women. The video shows them seated in plastic chairs facing the camera, while the woman in the middle addresses Netanyahu directly with increasing fury. She makes reference to a press conference by families of the hostages “yesterday,” suggesting it was filmed on Monday. The video comes just days after progress in hostage negotiations fell through, a fact referenced by the speaker who mentions a supposed “ceasefire.” Israeli leaders Friday dismissed talks of a breakthrough in talks as a rumor as they announced an expansion of the ground campaign. The woman speaks fluently and does not appear to be reading from a script, but because the women are hostages, the statement could have been made under duress. “You promised to release us all,” she says, suggesting she is aware of hostage negotiations. She finishes with a demand to “free us all,” screaming: “Now! Now! Now!” Relatives of the hostages have named the women as Elena Trupanov, Danielle Alony and Ramon Kirsht. Aloni is the speaker. The women do not show visible signs of physical mistreatment, but CNN is unable to verify anything about their circumstances or well-being. Netanyahu’s office confirmed the names in a brief statement, addressing the women, "who were kidnapped by Hamas who commits war crimes." "I hug you. Our hearts go out to you and the other abductees. We are doing everything to bring all the kidnapped and missing people home," the office statement read. Israeli television channels 11 and 12 are showing a still from the video on air. Channel 13 is not, saying on air it is honoring a request from the relatives. -
