  1. Like the aggressiveness, but the Colts still moved the ball pretty easily against our first string guys.

True - I think this is fairly typical of the Pettine defense we saw with the Jets, very aggressive and opportunitistic. Meaning they blitz hard, go after the ball, and force turnovers, but not necessarily stifling as far as not giving up yards. The Colts are not at all a good running team... so we'll see what happens against AP on Friday night.
  2. I had to cut grass and so missed the 1st part of the 1st quarter, so I didn't get to see how many of our veterans did but the one thing I noticed right away was the increased speed and physicality of the this years D from sideline to sideline. I always cringed last season any time there was intentional misdirection pass plays or sharp cutbacks on runs by opposing offenses. So many times I watched what should have been either cold stops in the backfield or line of scrimmage (at best maybe a 2 or 3 yd gain) turn into big 1st downs because our lb corps either couldn't quite get back across the field in time to make a tackle or never got off the initial block in the 1st place. It was a very pleasant surprise to see cutback runners and swing pass receivers actually getting stopped this game (most of the time anyway).

You waited to cut grass until the most excited 15 minutes in the 8 months, the first part of the first game of the year? LOL, I kid.
  3. I agree with the comments about the camera work. The NFL Network's production quality is often so much lower than the broadcast networks, which I find amazing, although for all I know they use the local feeds.

Plus - and this is something to watch for during the season - I don't think the game producers are ready for how quickly the Bills' offense plans to line up and snap the ball. There isn't enough time for the usual jibber-jabber that goes on between plays (slowed-down replays, shots of the coaches and cheerleaders, cartoon robots shooting each other). The league is going to have to adjust to the speed of the Bills' offense.

Plus, not sure if you watched the Patsies-Iggles on Fri. night, but Phil is very fast as well. Run a no-huddle and it is crazy fast.
  4. Perhaps I am not as optimistic as others, but I think Manual did not do any harm to Kolb. While with more zip, his passing was reminiscent of Capt Checkdown....let's see how he looks after 3 preseason games before we go cutting the only proven vet on the roster.

I see where you are going with Capt Checkdown... but Manuel's release is wayyyy quicker. Also, typical of rookies, esp. in first NFL action, to check down. Trentative Checkwards was doing that in like his 4th season.

What did you want him to do throw INTs?

Exactly, and loved where he spun his way out of a sack and then threw it away when in trouble. Didn't take chances or fumble. 0 turnovers by a rookie QB, me likey.
  5. One negative I saw. After CJ left, no running game at all. Line wasn't opening many holes, it seems.

Agreed.... not sure how much to worry but Indy is not known to be strong against the run either.

Great post as usual, Bill! Here are a few comments:

    1) Tuel to Easley reminds me of Fitz to SJ. This is a GOOD thing. They played together as scrubs and developed a chemistry. This is a great thing to see.

After the overall pleasing first half with EJ Manuel, the 2nd half with Tuel was an extremely pleasant surprise as well!

    4) I sent a letter to am man I know,

It said, "One for the money, two for the show."

I waited all summer for his reply,

He said, "3 to get ready and 4 TO FLY."

Brilliant Robert Hunter lyrics of course, but did you know that Keith Godchaux wrote the music!

    5) Manuel? He was every bit as I could have hoped for and more.

Every bit. He showed poise, remained calm under pressure, made some nice throws, looked comfortable running the 2-minute drill, *and* has legs that can move! Yes it's only pre-season, but this made for a good start.

    8) Goodwin? OMG!!!!!!!!!!!! He looked like McKelvin with a brain and football instincts!!!!! If his returns can stay anywhere close to what he did today, I don't really care if he ever catches a pass. The 106 yard TD was just that sick!

This guy can turn on the afterburners! Only recently learned he was an Olympic long jumper!

    13) GO BILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe 1 or 2 more exclamation marks are called for.

Ok so this was only a pre-season game. Still, they came into Indy and basically destroyed them.

It was interesting to listen to the hometown Indy broadcasters. First the pre-game never mentioned the name of a single Bills player (and the team itself was barely mentioned.) I think the first time any individual Bills were mentioned by name was when the game was underway.

It's possible that my favorite moments from the game were when the announcers said: "Coach Pagano can't like that!" Did they say it about 10 times? (Often the camera would cut to Pagano at that point, his expression making their point.)

The broadcast was absolutely ridiculous. From the beginning they barely even mentioned who the Colts were playing or showed the Bills until play started. Then, no shots of Marrone or any of the Bills coaches. Constantly didnt know who was making plays, "Andrew is sacked by a Bills Player. Oh, it was Mario Williams." Pronounced names wrong. Just horrible. If anyone DVR'd the game off of NFL Network, mute the sound and you won't be sorry.
  6. Not to pile on, but first of all, every team's situation is different so it makes no sense to compare different teams, QBs, coaches, seasons, etc. Moreover, Luck and RGIII specifically are #1 and #2 overall picks who were by everyone's estimation can't miss franchise QBs, once every 20 years type of rookies who start right away and lead their teams to the playoffs for 15 years. That is the not case with the majority of rookie QBs, even those in the 1st round. Usually folks are all over the board with whether they should start year 2 at all or maybe just watch from the sidelines and "take it all in" for a season. Overall, I agree with everyone who points out that if you look at ANY of the 1st preason games of rookie starting QBs they will look no flashier than EJ's. I was very impressed with EJ's work today, no matter who he was out there against, because he looks sharp and prepared and seems to learn from mistakes. Keep in mind he will have CJ in there the whole game in the reg season to take the pressure off of him and if the D can play opportunistic and aggressive, and our ST can actually put pts on the board like the did today, that will help him tremendously in his first season. The worst thing for him would be to have no running game and to be always playing from behind as a rookie QB trying to learn all different D's, etc. I am realistically encouraged. Loved the play today of a lot of our rooks, esp. EJ, Goodwin and Alonso. I also think that is Mario can stay healthy and truly is "all in" he can be an all-pro in this defensive scheme. Dude is sick off the blind side.

And, regarding Russell Wilson, I love the kid but he had some poor games last year. Everyone remembers him in the playoffs and some of his game-winners, but he made a ton of rookie mistakes. I think EJ is actually a better version of him, not to mention bigger/taller. I watched them both in college and Wilson was not someone you would point to as a future NFL starter. Wilson was on a VERY good team and he is a very smart, prepared and talented player and it showed up toward the end of the year.

  7. Yea but what is EJ really learning from Kolb, how to bandage your injuries properly? How to only play 4 games in a season? ;)

It was like when he sat behind Ponder in college. Gruden said to EJ that Ponder taught him how to not take hits heh

Will be very interesting to see who end up being the better NFL QB between Ponder and EJ. I think Ponder actually gets kind of a bad rap - probably due to being drafted higher than anyone thought he should be (4 spots higher than EJ even) and the fact he has AP running the ball. But if you watch him play, he is actually decent. I sure hope EJ is better, but the comparison will be there.
  8. Don't like your RB's. I like Gore as a #2 but not a #1. Good that you got James to back him up. WR's are very nice. I think at this point Gates is a adequate TE. Is there anyone else on the wire like Branden Myers? Also Malcom Floyd doesn't do much for me. If I was going to look at a SD to capitalize on Alexander going down I would rather have Vincent Brown.

Hmmm.. thanks for the suggestions, I am going to check the waiver wire to see if any of the guys you mention are available for potential add/drop.

Should have taken T Rich over Megatron but CJ is a beast and the Lions will be a passing team. Gore may have been a reach. Draft looks pretty solid especially for taking time off and getting back in. Good luck with your season.

LOL, thanks, I think I know a lot about football, but not so much from a fantasy angle. Should have prepared more and known to take RB first and 2nd round, no matter what. Oh well. Go Frank Gore! LOL.
  9. Andrew Luck

... getting blitzed so hard they yank him out after a series?

Although I respect the original question, there's just no way for me to narrow the field. So much is new, and I want to watch it all.

think because this team is so young and has soooo many new faces, schemes, everything is brand new, preseason games are much more intriguing than for fans of teams that are stable.
  10. The Mario deal is more worthy then you think. Just imagine the fallout if they didn't sign him. It was a needed signing for more reasons then on the field production. Add all that up.

True - I actually like the signing, because I think he actually will be a star in Pettine's D. But, 100 mill is a lot for 10 sacks/yr which is what he was doing in Houston. His rep was that he was not all in, all the time. I fear that we see the same thing here. I hope that is not the case now.
