  1. Yes, the defensive side of the ball is worse than the Jauron years for sure, but the Offensive side of the ball is much better than the Jauron years. They were virtually dead last in offense under Jauron. So, the big failing as HC has been the 3x4 4x3 mess. And, coaching is as big a part as lack of talent on the defensive side of the ball. But, the changes themselves , interms of playuer unfamiliarity with scheme, create performance problems. So, changing schemes two of three years was reallly poor planing. Actually a good decision to go back to 4x3, I think, and should benefit from two years in a row next year. OF course, that is assuming we don't bring in a high flyer who wants to go back to 3x4...don't think I could stand that move again.

    Brandon is a classic non football guy running an organization. He doesn't like the record and its impact on selling tickets, so he wants a change. But, his abilities to judge football matters is almost zero in terms of personnel. So, I hope Ralph is making these assessment on the football side and substantial discounting of Brandon's input. Then again, Ralph picked Harvey Johnson, back in the bad old days, so maybe we shouldn't counton that either. (the bad old days were 2-14, these are the new bad old days, not that low yet)

  2. I think without a doubt the talent is better on the roster. I think if you gave Jauron's coaching staff this roster he would have had the team in the playoffs.

    I don't know about the statement about the record....I will say the Offense is better under Chan, and more entertaining. But, the defense is worse under Gailey, the 3x4 4x3 shift has been terrible, and the coaches he picked have not done the job. THAT is Chans worst failing as head coach, not the Offense and Fitzpatrick. The offense would be good enough to win with a respectable defense, something we have not seen in Chan's three years. The only thing I can say in his defense is that many coaches will not come here because of the unstable franchaise situation.
  3. Well, I guess I am a serious minority opionion here, but I think Chan is slight favorite to stay. Ralph won't listen to the media (Brandon will, though) IF past practice is followed, there will be a review next week with Mr Wilson, with Nix, Gailey and Brandon present. We will know after that meeting Who is staying in the management of the team. I remember Chuck Knox coming back from Detriot after that meeting, and announcing after 5 years that he would not be retained. (no playoffs) So, could be next week, but might run into the following week, depending on when they do their review. If NIX goes, Whatley is a favorite, as THAT would constitute continuity, which IS Mr Wilson's style.

  4. Wood should take it easy on his knee IMO. He has a history of injuries and Id hate for him to injure it worse - affecting next season.

    This is correct. My view is that we should take this game as a opportunity to work in a few folks we want to find out about. guys who are on the roster and haven't played. (for example, Easley) Help with the talent evaluation over the winter. No crime in this, everybody wants to do well, play to win, to have a job next year.
  5. I see the most likely scenario as .....

    Nix and Gailey both retained for next season, in spite of a fan and media objections;

    Bills draft a QB somewhere in rounds 1 - 3;

    Fitz starts season with Chan sticking to the line he's the guy;

    Bills have horrible start of something like 1 & 4;

    Fans cry for the rookie QB to start , chan refuses saying he's not ready and fitz is the guy anyway;

    The outcry and tension becomes too great and chan is relieved o his duties after week 5;

    Wannatadt is named HC and starts the rookie QB;

    Bills finish 5 & 11 but the rookie looks more promising than fitz.

    Bills clean house and relieve nix and wannstadt of their duties.

    You lost me where you mention the media....don't give a rat about those folks and their thoughts. they write to sell papers....have little credibility with me. Have been watching the Bills since 1960...yep , and old timer, and still have season tickets. Believe me, its been worse, lots worse. Lived through the 2-14 years in the 80's
  6. Chan is done. Stick a fork in him. The remaining question is whether Buddy goes with him.

    Not so fast....

    The players will be blamed. Fitz for his "epic" collapse after signing his deal, & Mario for being "hurt".

    Fitz will be cut before his bonus is due, and Mario will stay.

    No, Fitz will be on the team in 13. You are right about Mario, however.
  7. The Buffalo players all suffer from being in a small market, and not getting national exposure. don't see them on ESPN to oftern, compared to a lot of those other guys on winning teams. Lynch and whitner make it with out teams, neither one had anything near a pro bowl year in Buffalo, both player had best years of average here. Coaching mostly, I think. Of course, Jason Peters attitude went south after he made the pro bowl, and refused to honor the last two years of his contract.

  8. Jim Kelly has a lot of positive attributes. He was smart enough to tell the politicians he didn't want to run for office. Right there, I think that means he is smart enough to help the front office. Seriously again, the guy is community minded, has the respect of the area popluation. Have no idea what he might do there, but don't feel bad at all if they bring him on board. Maybe to little of that done in the past. I recall Jerry 'Butler was on staff for a while.....I think that was also a front office job, but he is long gone, haven't heard his name in a while.

  9. I am a real old timer, used to watch Jim Brown on Sundays on a B&W TV at my grandmothers house. So, I have seen him, as well as Barry in person at the Ralph. And CJ numberout times. The backs are all GREAT, but run a spectrum. Brown was the best balance of speed and power I ever saw, not moves of a BArry or CJ, But, he was a load up the gut and could also get around the end. Brown retired after 8 years, on top of his game.(actually, so did Barry) Barry was more shifty, had that great jump sideways to make guys miss, but more a speed and moves guy than Brown. CJ leans toward being a moves guy first...likely the fastest of the three in terms of acceleration. But, both Brown and Sanders had great seasons, many years in a row. CJ hasn't done that yet, but he may...we will see. For my money, in todays NFL, Barry is probabily the pick over Brown...different era guys. CJ may get there, but hasn't done the many years yet.

  10. These efforts the last couple of weeks remind me of the arrival of Chuck Knox in Buffalo. The Bills players, the prior season, basically quit at the end of the season. The fans (us and our predecessors) coined a term. "Run for the bus football" That is, get the game over and get out of town (with the game check) And, don't get hurt doing it! When Knox arrived, he said he had never heard that term until he got to Buffalo, but after reviewing the game films, he understood the term. Well folks, the Bills are once again playing "Run for the bus football" (Takes an old timer to remember that phrase) Sorry to see a reinfection of that disease.

  11. Yeh, but.....the receiving corp is a diaster, but we did find out about Drin Dickerson...can't play adious. And, when we have to play ruvell Martin at wr, we are below the bottome of the barrell. I wonder if Kirk Morrison can suitu p at TE, we are almost out! (thats a joke) And I think guys with three years to try and play don't get a fourth shot. (Easley) Feel that way about Troup as well, only it will only be his third shot, I think. the Jets D coordinator is leaving, he's had enogh, wonder if there is enough money to get him to come to Buffalo, the Jets D has been pretty good.

    As for Chan, he needs a new D coordinator, and a real O coordinator. And, some alternatives at QB, Fitz can help a year in transition, but he can't do it. He has some stuff, but not enough. All in all, got to stop paying marginal folks, and get some new guys whereever.

  12. SJ is a capable receiver, but not a game breaker. HIs speed is less than average, but he is athletic and can catch the ball with inovative moves. Catching 1000 yds three years in a row makes him a pro, but not an all pro. He is still part of the solution for the Bills, and will be a starter whereever they play him. He is not the speed burner that the team needs right now. the thing that bothers me about SJ's Bills career is why he sat on the bench for 3 years....I guess I can understand one, learn the league etc. Of course, TO's arrival kept him on the bench, and maybe he learned a little from TO/ (who also was a pro, mostly in Buffalo) All in all, he has matured, and hopefully will be around for many more years.

    Sorry I said good things about him....he is stinking up the place today!!!!

  14. I don't think that the December cold weather and out of it syndrome is any worse post new lease signing. But, I am still very incensed about the Bills having four home games in December. (if you count Toronto) I beilieve this is league official underlings dumping on the Bills, Brandon, Mr. Wilson, and the Buffalo fans. They are totally ignoring the marketing aspects of the Buffalo weather/open stadium, and they don't care. I would not have a hard time with a Sep/OCt/Nov/DEc breakdown of 2/2/2/2 in terms of home games, that would be statistically average. Somethng is rotten in the NFL scheduling system vis a via the Bills. And, this problem is not limited to this year, look at other recent schedules. And when, I ask, have we seen four home games in one month of September or October. the Bills nation is being disrespected by the NFL in my view.

  15. Byrd and Levertre are both starters in the league, with certain pluses in their column and a shortcoming or two. The Bills need to resign if possible. But, not outside of their value as judged by the knowledgeable....that is Nix/Whatley and the money guys. the Bills can't control if some other team overspends realtive to those benchmarks, it can happen. Also, the players might have a geographic preference we don't know about. (they would never divulge for numerous reasons) In that scenrio, you loose the player, even if money is the same. Tie does not necessarily go to the Bills, although you hope relationships outweigh those other things. but, some will like the big city lights, others will like the more small town environment that WNY has (think Mario)

    there are other free agents that also matter, Reinhardt, in particular. Now, in his case, with Urbik already tied up, if Levetre also signs, I think Reinhardt is a starter elsewhere in the league. When he has played, there is little if any dropoff in the O-line performance. And, it does take more than 5 OL guys. We face(d) losing all three of our best guards before Urbik signed.

    I also think McKelvin is a positive contributor, and have hopes we might retain him. He is better than the bashing he gets on this board, not an all pro CB, but an all pro returner for sure.

    In terms of the list of guys to loose to save cap space.......some of the names were right to let go...but I am not sure about Barnett, he has been there and done that, and was the Bills best linebacker. He did not make the plays this year he did last year, but, new scheme and all that. But, Kelsey, McGee, Spenser Johnson are all done imo. Also, Thigpen, Dorin Dickerson (anybody figure out why that guy was on the roster) Not hard to find slots on the roster for new fa signees and rookies. This will all play out over several months here. My big hope is that Nix will take a run at Alex Smith, my big fear is that he will succeed, and Smith is no better than Fitz.

  16. There is no upside to playing Jackson. Better to not play him at all. Worst case he leads the Bills to 2 wins and pushes us way down in the draft order for April. Then also plays himself into a free agent contract offer at the end of the season from somebody else willing to pay him more than the Bills. So we lose a 7th rounder, lose the guy in free agency, and ruin our chance for a better draft slot.

    This will likely happen irrespective of whether he gets on the field.
