1. Here's the response from the Guardian:

    Guardian response

I don't really want to get involved in all this, but I will say that this article appeared in the Guide which is basically the weekly TV guide that comes with Saturday's edition. Brookers column (which I don't normally bother to read which is why I couldn't remember who he was) is normally a sarcastic review of the week's tv and the tone of the article is fairly typical of the column.

That's kinda like saying, "whoops I forgot to turn off the reactor" at Chernobyl.

  2. I think George W. might've gone so far to the right that he looped back and is now at the fringe left. This man is no traditional conservative. I'm voting for Kerry b/c it might force the GOP to get back to reality instead of this sideshow.

Genius, I say! You vote for a liberal ion the hopes of promoting consevatism! BRILLIANT!

  3. Our day WILL come, and I hope that I am alive to see it.

    You summarized my sentiments exactly.

In all honesty I see no hope for this team. Unless something miraculous happens like JP turning out to be the second coming of Johhny Unitas and whitey drafts three guys that can start and dominate on the OL next year.

:( How depressing. Now I know how Bengals fans felt for so long.

  4. c'mon Joe...this season is a waste...no doubt about it.

But we got three young guys that could make a difference in the next couple years.

that being said...I feel your disgust.

I'll believe it when I see it. *shrugs*

Until then I'll just assume they will continue to lose for the foreseeable future.

  5. On December 28, 2001, the President held a "Press Availability" session at his ranch in Texas with Tommie Franks and he was asked about a new tape from Osama and whether the President worried that he had eluded capture and was capable of masterminding another attack and this is what the President said:

THE PRESIDENT:  "Oh, the tape, yes.  I didn't watch it all.  I saw snippets of it on TV.  You know, it's -- who knows when it was made. Secondly, he is not escaping us.  This is a guy who, three months ago, was in control of a county.  Now he's maybe in control of a cave.  He's on the run.

Listen, a while ago I said to the American people, our objective is more than bin Laden.  But one of the things for certain is we're going to get him running and keep him running, and bring him to justice.  And that's what's happening.  He's on the run, if he's running at all.

So we don't know whether he's in a cave with the door shut, or a cave with the door open -- we just don't know.  There's all kinds of reports and all kinds of speculation.  But one thing we know is that he's not in charge of Afghanistan anymore.  He's not in charge of the -- he's not the parasite that invaded the host, the Taliban. We know that for certain.  And we also know that we're on the hunt, and he knows that we're on the hunt.  And I like our position better than his....

...And so, while I hope 2002 is a year of peace, I'm realistic.  As to whether or not bin Laden is in control of some network, who knows? The thing we're certain about is that he's on the run, that he's hiding in caves, if hiding at all.  And the other thing I'm certain about is we will bring him to justice.  I don't know whether it's going to be tomorrow, but Tommy will tell you that I haven't said, Tommy, get him tomorrow.  I said, just get him.  And we will.  We will bring him to justice. "

We don't know, David, whether or not he's given any orders to any of his soldiers, but we take nothing for granted.  And so our country still remains on alert, and we're actively looking for anybody who would harm America.

Well, we are getting near to a thousand "tommorows" and we still haven't got him.

What scares me about this is the President's apparent belief that Osama is neutralized or at least far less dangerous because he no longer controls territory and instead controls just a "cave".  Coupled with the apparent lack of concern over whether he controls a "network" (who in the world doubts that he does?) or not as long as he is "hiding in caves".  This is the same old tired model of state supported terrorism that prevailed before 9/11 and is the supposed motivation behind the Iraq war.  A bunch of guys in caves have been doing a pretty good job of making life miserable and murderous for an awful lot of people.  They haven't the slightest need for holding onto territory.  This is not a war for land.  Taking and holding territory isn't going to get it done.

Terrorists can be quite effective without any state support at all and the idea that a terrorist danger is neutralized because of actions against a state is a dangerous one.  It sure didn't stop them from hitting Madrid and Bali and many other places I have listed in prior posts.  AQ is up and running and doing just fine despite "hiding in caves".  It is those very same caves which allowed the Aghans to hide and eventually defeat the Soviet Union.

When it comes to terrorism, despite all the tough talk, I don't think Bush really gets it.

How do you know bin Laden isn't dead? A family friend was IN tora-bora during the operations there. he was a marine sniper instructor called to duty in Afghanistan. He personally witnessed the bombing of many cave complexes and says to this day that there is ZERO possibility that anyone survived those attacks. If bin Laden was indeed there, it's very likely hes under a million tons of rock.

  6. Bingo Mickey, the real reason why Nixon didn't cry foul on Mayor Daily is because the Repubs were doing the exact same thing in the southern part of the State and Daily and the Dems just beat them in the dirty tricks dept. He had as much mud on himself as Kennedy and the Dems did.

Well now I've seen it all. A flaming leftist admitting the Kennedys and Daleys were (and still are) crooks.

  7. Written by their 3rd grade teachers:

George can be a bright student, but sometimes you wouldn't know it. He makes a lot of fart jokes.  He is well liked by his classmates. He doesn't like the bullies and sometimes beats them up with his friends. Sometimes he goes to the bathroom without even asking permission! When it is time to pass out cookies at snack time, George always gives everyone the same # of cookies - even the kids whose parents have lots of cookies! (he says "everybody should get the same number of cookies no matter how many they have"). George does well on tests but could definitely try harder. I have trouble changing George's mind - he sometimes doesn't listen to different opinions very well.

John is a very good student, perhaps too good. He often interupts me when I'm correcting tests to ask me a question such as "Mrs. Jones, did you know a cow has 7 stomachs?" or "Did you know Millard Fillmore once lived in East Aurora New York?". Sometimes I wish he would just play with the other kids. He has a 92 average in all subjects except math, where he has a 89. He cried when I told him his grade.  John is a bit awkward. The other day I asked him what his favorite color was and he said "red". When most of his classmates said their favorite color was blue he raised his hand and told me his favorite color was blue as well.  He's always the first to raise his hand to answer a question in class, but when I ask for the opinion of the class I notice he counts all the other hands before he answers.

*loud and raucous applause* that was f*cking fantastic!!

  8. This should be a comfort to everyone who has doubts about if he would use force - since prior to the primaries he was for the war then we can be assured that after he is elected he can be himself again and defend the country as needed.

    80642

LOL assuming he doesn't change his mind AGAIN.

  9. "Insurgency" ????  Was McCain's campaign for the Presidency an "insurgency"?  Don't be ridiculous.  The primaries were for the purpose of figuring out who the party wanted as their candidate.  Kerry had no right to it until he won it.  Dean was no more an insurgent than Kerry was or any other candidate.  The mere fact that every single democrat on the planet is not going to vote for Kerry is not very revealing especially when you look at the democrats you mentioned.  Being a truly diverse party, democrats almost never act monolithically, each marching in lock step with the other.  Republicans are the more disciplined party in terms of always singing the same tune.  Remember Reagan's rule?  "Thou shalt never speak ill of another republican."  Democrats are not so fanatical when it comes to silencing dissent in their own party.

    80629

    Oh?

Then how do you explain Kerry's lurch to the left in Iowa? Prior to that primary, he was hardly the anti-war firebrand. Now look at him.

  10. Not sure you want to debate the Republican shenanigans in the Philly race.  They were shameful at best.

If by partisan I mean you don't want Kerry to win, then you're partisan.  If you don't vote for Kerry you're voting for Bush.

    80522

For all you know I could be voting for Ken Crippen.

I've never in my adult life voted for a Dem or A Republican for president.

In 92, I voted for Perot.

    In 96 I voted Libertarian.

    in 2000 I voted Libertarian.

This year will mark the first time since I turned 18 that I will vote for a republican for President. Why? Because the thought of John Kerry as president TERRIFIES me.

The thought that a man would subjugate our national interests to please the European community TERRIFIES me.

The idea that there's actually a Ivy-league educated person out there who believes hiking takes on the top 2% of Americans will save social security and get rid of the deficit REALLY TERRIFIES me because I know what will happen in the end: He'll raise my taxes.

As much as I hate Bush's overspending, at least he cut my taxes and by a good portion.

  11. The media are not supposed to be complimentary.  They are supposed to shed light on a situation and reveal to the reader.  Regardless, Suskind is very complimentary about the president's people skills.

What this article addresses, and what you're missing, is that there is an unprecedented veil of secrecy around this administration.  Bush and Co. proceed headlong without any need for information that may weaken their case -- truth be damned.  Bush has a need for yes-men everywhere to provide a backdrop of "certainty" and resolute leadership, whether in the cabinet or on the campaign stage, and this is troubling.  He is so certain that there can be no other way to see an issue, no matter the evidence, that it could get us into deep trouble.

    I don't think you've addressed that yet.

    80435

A lot of this issue has to do with the muddying of the moral waters caused by the left wing of the baby boom generation. See, those people were of the school of thought that there is no right or wrong, only shades of gray. That view, IMO and in the president's opinion is WRONG. There are absolutes in this world. There is good and evil, right and wrong. Evil is evil and right is right. So, moral certitude and absoulte belief are very important in today's world and unfortunately, Kerry has neither.
