First off I want to say I respect Beane’s game. He always finds a way to fill holes and gives McD as much depth as possible every year to keep the team competitive. He did a great job putting make up on an ugly pig of a WR group after the draft. BUT what if we went all in on surrounding Josh with as much young cheap talent as possible. What if Beane didn’t play it safe year in and year out with high character dependable players and went with some potential home run hitters.

Humor me and lets play this out, let’s reverse time back to this epic 2024 WR draft. AD Mitchell and Troy Franklin may have had some character flaws that dropped them a bit in the draft but their talent is undeniable.

In a year where even before we lost Davis and Diggs we needed another young WR, let’s pretend that we did something unconventional and actually took 3 WR in the first 3 rounds! 🤯

Now how would this play out?

Pick 33 is still Coleman and we got some draft capital

pick 51 or higher (trade a 5th this year and a 3rd next year) AD Mitchell

    Pick 95 Troy Franklin

The rest of the draft stays the same

BUT wait we don’t have Bishop at safety or Carter at DT whatever will we do!?!

Hmmm maybe this year we let McD get a couple FAs to plug and play. Maybe we don’t go dumpster diving for leftover WRs and instead grab a couple veteran defensive players instead.

Why not sign Justin Simmons and Calais Campbell and then next year when it’s a better defensive draft you can address the DT spot

Josh now has Coleman, AD Mitchell, Troy Franklin, Khalil Shakir, and Curtis Samuel…oh and McD can have his special teams WR with the last spot too in Hollins, Shavers or Shorter. You know you’d love that WR corps and so would Josh for the next 4+ years

Again, Beane did a great job making the best out of a bad situation with his WR room but man what could’ve been if he just leaned into helping his franchise QB out long term instead of short term bandaids.

this is a level of draft stupidity….using your first 3 picks on 2 position.

I don't know, I think he's got a fairly even shot to make the roster. Every year under McDermott, save for last season, (where we carried extra DL to account for Von not starting the year and players we didn't want to cut) we've kept 6 or 7 WR's (generally accounting the 7th for Special Teams).

I see us keeping 6 this season. Coleman, Samuel, Shakir, MVS, and Hollins (mainly for ST and blocking abilities) seem locked in. Meaning one spot remains for Shorter, Claypool, Cephus, Hamler, and the rest of the UDFA/Futures Pool.

All things equal, I think Shorter has the edge being a 5th Round Draft investment. He'd have to look pretty poor in Camp and the Pre-Season for them to give up on him or Claypool and/or Cephus exceed expectations.

We've only outright cut a pick above Round 6 without being given a shot on the 53 once under McDermott. That was Vosean Joseph.

I look at the team having

    22 offense ( 2QB, 3 RB/FB, 9 OL, 3 TE, 5 WR)

    22 D ( 8 DL, 5LB, 9 DB)

    6 ST ( K, P, LS, Returner, 2 ST captains)

3 open spots for injured players for in-season IR or rookies who likely can’t clear waivers

I think only Coleman, Shakir, Samuel are safe.  One spot is eligible for a returner.

factors in the decision are things like PUP lists if you expect the player to be ready in season you utilize this in roster moves so you might not carry 1 more slot in initial 53 man roster because PUP list is adding that.

with MVS and Claypool  veterans they can go on PS or be cut then resigned due to in season IR moves.

Guess Cincy in trouble with money they're giving Burrow, Higgins and Chase.

Not yet.  Chase (2021) and burrow (2020) still on rookie contracts.  Higgins (2020) being a 2nd round pick only had 4 yrs this franchise tag this year. Next year Burrow gets the high QB cap hit, 2036 is ehrn thry have to decide between Higgins and chase on top receiver ( assuming higgins is franchised again in 2025)

When i watched him in college, the first thing that came to mind was "generational" and i so wanted the Bills to draft him, however, he couldn't carry it over to the NFL..........that's a shame cause the guy is good, but i just don't know what the hell happened to him.

I guess you coukd say he’s “ generational” but not in a good way.

Jets should have went hard for McCarthy.  He was there for them.  Instead they took a tackle to keep the Rogers dream alive.  But McCarthy is probably good enough right now to win behind that defense.  I watched him a lot at Michigan because I had a daughter there.  Jets would have been like Michigan all over - very strong defense, do enough on offense to not screw it up and maybe even make some plays.  Glad they took the tackle.

I think the Jets have bern banned from drafting a QB in the top half of the first round.

  8. Something people seem to forget in throwing a ball 40+ yards doen thr field.  How long does it take for the ball to go from release to re river.  Given that time, how far can the deep safety need to be away from ball catch point yo grt therr at the same time?

deep balls are just not as simple as you might think,  with many defenses playing a defense to prevent. As others have said, you may see these occur once a game excluding end of half/ game Hail Mary throws. These go routes are run to control safeties on underneath routes or you isolate a defender on deciding who to bite

Explaining in a little more detail where my mind was when I said that...

We carried 9 OL on the 53 last year:

    • Dawkins, Dion
    • Brown, Spencer
    • Torrence, O'Cyrus
    • McGovern, Connor
    • Morse, Mitch
    • Bates, Ryan
    • Edwards, David
    • Anderson, Alec
    • Van Demark, Ryan

This year 7/9 OL are returning:

    Locks (5)

    • Dawkins, Dion
    • Brown, Spencer
    • Torrence, O'Cyrus
    • McGovern, Connor
    • Edwards, David

This is our presumed starting 5 OL. The only thing that could change is McGovern moving back to LG and Edwards moving back to a reserve role.

High Probability to Make Roster (2)

    • Van Demark, Ryan
    • Anderson, Alec

These guys are REALLY close to being locks in my opinion.

The Bills signed Alec Anderson as an UDFA, and he spent all of 2022 on the practice squad and the entire 2023 season on the 53. Van Demark was a Colts UDFA in 2022 but like Anderson spent 2022 on our practice squad and all of 2023 on our 53.

The Bills have invested a lot of time/resources into developing both players and I think they clearly have a leg up on the competition.

    New Veterans (3)

    • Collins, La'el
    • Clapp, Will
    • Doyle, Tommy*

Collins has some guarantees, but I don't think he's a guarantee to make the roster, although that likely gives him a leg up. I don't think Clapp has a chance to make the roster unless there is an injury at the C position. Tommy Doyle fits here because he's coming off injury, but made the roster in 2021 and 2022, likely would've made it in 2023 before a season ending injury - he's fighting an uphill battle.

    Drafted Rookies (3)

    • Van Pran-Granger, Sedrick
    • Grable, Tylan
    • Clayton, Travis

The way Beane spoke about Clayton after the draft, it seems like they've banking on him being the 17th guy on the Practice Squad. My gut tells me that Van Pran-Granger is nearly a lock for the reserve C role (I think this is possible with McGovern and Edwards being able to play G) and pundits seem to think he could end up starting for us this year. Grable is competing for a reserve T role with the likes of Collins, Doyle and Van Demark, if not he's likely another hopeful Practice Squad stash for Beane.

After walking through it I feel pretty comfortable saying we can predict who 8/9 lineman will be on the 53.

    • Dawkins, Dion
    • Brown, Spencer
    • Torrence, O'Cyrus
    • McGovern, Connor
    • Edwards, David
    • Anderson, Alec
    • Van Demark, Ryan
    • Van Pran-Granger, Sedrick

That leaves Collins, Clapp, Doyle, Grable, Clayton, Edwards, Britton and Bills competing for 1 spot.

Jordan Schultz suggested that Keaton Bills *SHOULD* make this team. I just think that it's going to be an uphill battle for any of the UDFA to break camp on the 53.

just like with other positions…Bills will be a tough team to get a 53 man roster spot.  It’s rare to see someone picked in rounds 1-3 gets cut after camp. In their case they are in positions veterans are not returning.

you figure their first 3 picks are locks on making the Bills roster if not injured.

with each position group the last spot is up for grabs excluding the top 3 drafted rookies ( WR,  S, DT/IDL)

This is such a confusing statement to me.

Which player drafted 28 and later would make you stand up and say that?

OP wanted thrm to sell all picks and get in top 20 and get one of those 3 top WRs thinking thst is the missing piece

this teams need to add depth…drafting safety and interior off/ def line isn’t sexy enough.

folks on here do not understand therr is a salary cap….

look across the league, the teams that have stayed good for a long time rely on youth/ picks because you need this picks to balance out the club salary structure.

For those of you that aren’t thrilled about the Keon Coleman pick…remember one thing.  Word came out that he was the last receiver left on Allen’s wish list. Thats a big deal. Why would Beane not want to consult the face of his franchise when trying to get him more weapons?

This tells me that Allen’s wish list included Harrison, Nabers, Odunze, Coleman, and probably Thomas. Think of it this way…if worthy, pearsall, or legette were on that list, they would have taken them at 28, or at most 32 for legette. I’m sure Beane would have liked to have traded down another time, but he could have risked losing Coleman.

I wasn’t overly thrilled with Coleman being the guy, but while he might lack separation on tape, and a good 40 time, he also had amazing splits in the 40 and other drills. The drills are where the football comes out in these guys…you know, catching the ball. Haha. Anyways…when you look at the bigger picture with Coleman, it’s not a bad pick at all. The guy is really athletic, has great hands and body control…and most of all…Allen wanted him.

im curious one the amount of overlap in the McD/Beane firing and Trading Allen for picks
