  1. I guess is depends on how one defines an "Iraqi". In America until the last century, giving rights to "Americans" didn't mean women or other minorities were entitled to the same.
  2. The best way to stop them from crossing the borders to find work is... NOT TO HIRE THEM. duh.
  3. Ah but I wasn't dishing anything out to anyone. merely commenting that Robert's comment reflected poorly on the Christian right and that they should be outraged at the idea of him condoning murder. That you defend Robertson's ill-advised and inflammatory comment, which was denounced by the White House, says a lot. In other words murder is just A-OK if the person is deemed to be a bad person. Who's the judge? A perfect being like you and your fellow bigot-in-arms? Ah well the scales may yet fall from your eyes. Not as fast as the hair from your head, perhaps, but perhaps fall it will. I'll pray for you.
  4. Because you seem to have a personal issue with ME, you make everything about that issue. The religious right has been more than happy to claim Robertson for years. If they do not denounce his very unChristlike pronouncement then they are either fools, hypocrites or downright evil. Take your pick. Pick your nose if you must. Whatever.
  5. The big question is "Who Would Jesus Kill?". If the Christian right tolerates this is just serves to underscore the depths of their hypocrisy (and stupidity). It will be well worthwhile to go to hell just to see THEM all burning there too.
  6. There would be one way to defuse Cindy Sheehan. Send out Laura Bush. Everyone loves Laura. One sympathetic mother to another. What a heartwarming photo-op. I wonder why that hasn't happened? Maybe even the Bushistas realize that it doesn't look good that their kids don't support the war (they're not serving are they?) and that Laura wouldn't be able to defend that position. Maybe they asked and Laura said now. It wouldn't be the first time she didn't agree with her husband's policies, If Bush didn't insist on 5-week vacations at Crawford it wouldn't be a big deal. He'll leave and then she'll go do DC where she'll get lost amongst the myriad other protest groups outside the WH.
  7. I don't watch the Sopranos. But targeting Mafioso isn't a like-for-like comparison. They may not operate openly but it's no secret who they are. In their case the challenge is not learning their identify but getting enough on them to hold up in court. And there are non-Italians in the Mafia by the way. And the initial thread relates to profiling Muslims. My point is you can't do it. Any more than you can profile Catholics. Unless of course you look for who's eating fish fries on Friday in the Northeast.... Sorry - I was raised Catholic. Profile ME.
  8. Oh yeah, sure, why not? And we can build a huge wall along the north and south borders and 1000 years from now people can wonder what it was like to live in a country where everyone was so afraid of the outside.... Puhlease. All this fear and suspicion is unAmerican. If the borders had been closed 150 years ago most of you wouldn't be here. Of course I would because my family landed in 1658. It was nice of us to let YOUR forebears in, wasn't it?
  9. in TX he voted in the GOP primary because the Libertarians wield no power; but he always voted Libertarian in the election until the Bushistas took over and then, as he said, he'd hold his nose and vote for ANY Democrat over them.
  10. My husband is a Libertarian, and where I live the party is effective, but unfortunately due to labeling etc. a lot of people in other areas think of the Libertarian party as a bunch of radical wingnut anarchists. That's not true of course, Libertarians are in actuality closer to what Republicans pretend to be but...brand image is everything. Otherwise people would actually pay attention to facts an records, and vote accordingly. But this is America and people are too lazy to do their civic duty and be informed....so, it would take nothing short of a miracle or a major jolt of some sort (say the Dem and Rep candidates caught having illicit sex with each other) to give the vote to a third party.
  11. And let us not forget that the latest Al Qaeda cell was located in our own prison system amongst guys recruited in prison. American guys. It's not a religious thing, it's a hatred thing. Had Timothy McVeigh not been executed, he would probably have danced with glee on 9/11, and he was as Aryan-looking as they come.
  12. Sure I bet they appreciate the freedom to not have jobs, to get blown up standing in line and of course the women the freedom to not be stoned as long as they wear burkas. Those poor people just traded one set of oppressors for another.
  13. Fishing for low troop morale is a low thing indeed. Their survival can depend on having a positive feeling and approach about what they're doing. Of course that can all change from the inside. My daughter's friend went to enlist in the Marines. She told the recruiter she'd been treated AND hospitalized for depression within the past year. The recruiter's response: when you report, just don't mention it. Now that is JUST what we need in our armed forces. Fortunately she did feel guilty and told the truth and got kicked out. What a relief. I wonder how many others keep quiet about that sort of thing. But I don't really want to know. Talk about a morale buster.
  14. Why do I feel someone's playing "The Sounds of Silence" in the background.....
  15. I hate to point this out but "Muslim" is not a race. You can profile Arabs or Middle Easterners but they're not all Muslims. And you can profile Muslims, but they come in various races. Oh shoot, now what? Acknowledge that you just can't control it all and that "racial profiling" will accomplish little more than a false sense of security?
  16. I guess DTV finally caught old Richio stealing their service and now he's doing his community service as an unpaid DTV sales rep.
  17. Actually I heard an oil industry analyst say essentially the same thing, particularly about the economy. So we either listen to the same radio stations while sitting in traffic or...you may know what you're talking about. Or both of you could be absolutely wrong, it's hard to say. What's easy to see is that the oil industry continues to do excessively well, just trading on people's fears, the auto industry's recalcitrance, and the inability of the huge energy-devouring monster USA to move to alternative fuel sources more quickly.
  18. Our paper published a letter from an active service military man who summed it up perfectly: he asked why do we feel the need to teach not one, or the other - but why teach either? Reading through many of the posts on this board I am fairly certain that "intelligent design" is a fallacy. And besides - someone or something or some being had to create the first microbe or whatever it was that evolved... so there's room for both. And that's about all the time I think the topic is worth. How ridiculous it is that Christian fundies are so afraid of science...they deny the very miracle of our being that they purport to promote.
  19. Don't waste your sympathy on them. They need surgery rather, to remove their heads from their...whatever. Remind me to tell you of my husband's great adventure on the bus to Seahawks training camp...with the Seagals. Those poor Seagals.
  20. Thenk you. I have read a deal on the subject, which was actually nicely summarized in a documentary a few weeks ago reviewing various countries and their approach to managing terrorism. The French chapter opened with "If you're a terrorist, you'd better avoid France". But the ignoraumuses around here are convinced that because Chrirac (who is a jackass, but then he's a politician, same thing) didn't rush into a stupid war the French are wussies...well, you'll never convince them. But if I was a terrorist I sure wouldn't go there, I'd hang out in the US, put some flags and Support Our Troops stickers on my car, and no-one would ever look past that.
  21. How very fortunate for you. I went to all 6 or 7 news of the big (not local) outlets multiple times and had to wait until they finished with the Jets fighting the Gnats ... etc. It was pretty disgusting.
  22. Yes I heard one of them say that much Friday as the international efforts were being mobilized. Sick commentary on this putrid world that missing brides and other dingbats get nonstop coverage, while I had to search all over the news stations yesterday for any word on this heart-wrenching, dramatic situation.
  23. I thought the Bledsoe standard was getting sacked and concluded, before I read that blather, that it meant that JP escaped unsacked yesterday... Go read the Dallas Cowboys training camp blogs and see what we're missing. Or not.
  24. Hmmm so Tony Blair is finally talking about getting as tough as the French and it's a good thing...hmm I thought French was bad? Of course try being a terrorist in France...it's not easy, that's why the terrorists are in places like America and the UK...hmmm, oh life gets so confusing when it's not all black and white! But yet how could emulating the French be good? :-)
  25. Don't worry, RIO, it takes some time for the doctors to get the dosage just right. In the interim these delusions, along with gas and bloating, are expected side effects.
