  1. How is it a proven fact?

Has there ever been an NFL GM in the history of the league who has hit on every draft?

Bill Polian was a genius when he landed Bruce, Andre, Kelly, Bennett, etc. He was a bum when he was fired from the Colts after putting together a team that picked first overall.

That's just one example but there are many studies that show how much of a crapshoot the NFL Draft is.

  2. Shouldn't this be common sense??

The human body is not made to handle that kind of pounding on an every day basis year after year. Is there anyone in their right mind that would disagree with this comment? Pretty sure all the players in their 50s, 60s and 70s that can barely walk without use of a cane or walker, have mangled fingers, have had uncountable surgeries to replace knees, hips, etc, and can't pick up their grandkids would agree wholeheartedly...not to mention the ones dealing with concussion related issues and/or the ones who have taken their own lives due to the loss of their brain functioning...

And this doesn't even include all the weight training, conditioning, etc that goes on all year round now...

Doesn't anyone stop to wonder why so many non-contact ACL injuries keep occurring? Doesn't common sense tell you that a body part only has so much use built into it over its life before it gives out? You can only forcefully cut so many times on an ACL before it simply weakens to the point of breaking. 20 and 30 years ago when players actually had off-seasons, these non-contact ACL injuries were almost unheard of. Their body had enough time to rest and recover, which is not the case anymore. Is it any different than all these factory workers that end up with severe shoulder, wrist or carpal tunnel issues due to repeating the same motion every day over and over again?

Anyone arguing that humans somehow are "meant" to take this kind of abuse or repetitive trauma over and over again must have a screw loose somewhere. So now its a big deal simply because someone who works in a high position in the NFL comes out and tells the truth? Why? Because now it might open the NFL up for further lawsuits? I mean get over it...anyone with half a brain is going to come to the same conclusion pretty easily. People need to get off this "Political Correctness" bullcrap that is ruining the world. You can't say anything anymore without it "offending" someone in some way. These people need to get a life...they obviously don't have enough going on in theirs that they have time to worry so much about what is simply the truth.

No one is "offended." Some people think his idiotic comments are comical, others are either puzzled or annoyed by them. Then others think it's indicative of his incompetence.

  3.

    @BrentAxeMedia

I think most understood what Doug Whaley meant to say with the "humans" comment. But in the media world today, that's what can happen.

    @SalSports

    Sal Capaccio Retweeted Brent Axe

Totally. No room for nuance and context anymore, it seems.

It's not as if Whaley were vague. He LITERALLY SAID "I personally don't think humans are supposed to play (football)."

An absolutely ridiculous statement for a General Manger of a National Football League team to make.

  4. No.....not anyone can replace Whaley in the job requirements to "find talent".....that is why there are only so many of these jobs in the the world. I know there are a lot of armchair qbs that THINK they could do it but trust me.....they wont be getting a call.

Show me a job description for NFL GM that says he must be a good public speaker. I will wait.

Go on Twitter and you can find people like Chris Trapasso, Rob Quinn, etc. who could do exactly what Whaley does with regard to "finding talent." It's hilarious how complicated you think it is.

And there are only 32 NFL GM jobs because there are only 32 NFL teams.

Are you saying public speaking is not part of an NFL GM's job?

  5.

Okay, serious question: is it your belief that human bodies are intended to crash full speed into each other in perpetuity?

File this under "he probably should've made a different choice of words", but let's not act like he doomed the league.

If I ruled the world, football would be much different. I love so many aspects of it which is why I keep watching and supporting the NFL and Bills. But I hate the violence and adverse effects it can have on those who participate. I wish more of those in charge of the NFL and its teams would make a stronger effort to change the sport for the better.

But if I truly believed that "humans are not supposed to play" football like Whaley literally stated then I couldn't in good conscience make my living off of those who do play the sport.

"Embarrassed" isn't the same as "doomed."

   Resources like what? EA Madden player scores?? Seriously, You honestly believe being an evaluator of talent is something anyone can do?? I mean if everyone here does it so it, any moron can, right?

Not just "anyone." But a helluva lot more than there are number of NFL GM positions. It's far from rocket science.

It's proven fact that draft results are overwhelmingly luck and very little skill, for instance.

  6. If you put him transaction per transaction with his peers......in the football area yes Whaley does look to be pretty good at his job.

The teams wins and losses should not come into that equation....his job is to find talent....Rex Ryan was not Whaley's hire....it was the owners.....

Almost anyone can replace Whaley if all his job requires him to do is "find talent." That's not at all difficult in this day and age considering the vast amount of resources available.

Besides finding a quality head coach, his job description should also entail adequate public speaking skills and not embarrassing the league or organization.

  7. Could you please explain "challenged"

He does appear to not be a comfortable public speaker......but in the realm of football he is pretty good at his job.

    Verbally challenged.

Even ignoring that aspect of his position - the jury is still out on whether or not he's "pretty good at his job."

The longer we wait for this team to accomplish something real as we see Whaley going viral over stupid statements, the hotter Whaley's seat gets.

  8.

    It's not a "look"...

I try to give people the benefit of the doubt. There are multiple intelligences and maybe Whaley is a smart guy who is just terrible at speaking.

But considering he's a General Manager of an NFL team and public speaking is part of his job, it's a really bad "look."

  9.

This is a complete misinterpretation of the intent which is the human body isn't designed to sustain the extreme forces that are inherent to playing football at the NFL level and therefore players will get injured. Nothing more and nothing less.

Not at all. If he doesn't want to take heat for such a statement then he should either quit is job or do everything in his power to change the way the game is played to make it safer. Until then, making a public statement like that will go viral in a negative fashion.

  10. OMG! We're losing the PR Super Bowl!

I saw Around the Horn and PTI and neither show made much of the comments. In fact two panelists agreed with Whaley's comments. Oh the horror.

You know what this story will be in two days? Forgotten.

It's a pretty big deal for an NFL GM to say something like that.

It's like an executive of Papa John's making a public statement "I personally don't think humans are supposed to eat pizza. Oh by the way, keep eating pizza you fat suckers."

It's not only bad for the brand, but it makes Whaley look like a deplorable person for willingly continuing to make his living signing players on to participate in a sport that he believes "human beings aren't supposed to play" because it's so hazardous to their long-term health.

It's one more example in a list of many of Whaley making himself look extremely unintelligent and unqualified for the position he currently holds.

I'll get skewered by some locals for this, but Tim Horton's needs to lower their coffee temperature. It's literally undrinkable for something close to a half-hour after ordering on account of temperature.

Funny you mention Tim Horton's because that's exactly where I was thinking. But not their coffee. When I take my kids there we need to literally sit and wait at least 15 minutes blowing on their mac-n-cheese before they're able to eat it. It's as if they take it directly from the fiery pits of hell. No idea if they have *CAUTION: HOT* labeled on the container.

  11. Holy hell, people are running with *that* line?

Seriously, we're 'supposed' to do things like forage and light hunting, and that's about it... football? Not so much. The statement makes perfect sense, but hey, offseason. Lets have an outrage party.

  12. I'm not sure why people think Henderson is a viable option at tackle. Even as depth. The guy has Crohns and was awful as a starter. Mills will start or they get lucky and a decent starter becomes available over the next few months.

He has the most physical ability and potential, and he's still young. But you're right in that he's been awful even when healthy.

  13.

Btw, Bill Polian once said of Clayton, “Having a discussion with him is like having a discussion with another general manager. It’s as though you’re talking with a peer.”

    http://www.thenewstribune.com/sports/nfl/seattle-seahawks/article25862434.html

(This is an awesome article if you want to know how Clayton became so successful as a NFL reporter and what makes him different).

And NFL GM's are always right!

Firstly, you assume Taylor's game will remain stagnant. With him getting #1 reps for the entirety of OTAs, Training Camp, and Preseason along with being in the system for a 2nd year there's no reason why he cannot improve. Secondly, Miller missed time with with a bad ankle and also played with it while Henderson wasn't healthy all season and eventually went out with his illness.

I'm not "assuming" anything. I'm simply talking probabilities. I hope Taylor can improve but from Week 1 to Week 17 he never really showed much improvement with regard to his pocket awareness (my biggest concern with him), anticipation throws and mid-range throwing accuracy. It's also extremely unlikely that Taylor will continue to connect on deep throws at the rate he did in 2015 - unless Taylor really is the best deep thrower in the NFL.

Bills were lucky that their two worse starters (by far) were the only ones to suffer injury. Their backups were actually better. Hopefully we see (massive) improvement from both Miller and Henderson.

  14.

    What is the rationale?

Roman was able to hide many of Taylor's deficiencies in 2015 and that's unlikely to happen for a second straight season. It's also rare for an entire starting OLine unit to go through all 16 games unscathed like they did in 2015. Odds are the team will suffer at least one if not two injuries there and our depth isn't good at all.

  15. He hasn't been a player on Mills' level at the RT position. From what I've read he's only played OG/C in the NFL. They might want to try him at RT, but that doesn't mean he'd be a good one or better than what they have. If you're talking about someone of his proven level at OG/C that wouldn't be ridiculous. As it is we don't know about his RT skills.

Yeah, my guess is he wasn't too crazy about the idea of playing Tackle.

  16. Your confident in Miller? I get it he was a rookie. But he struggled significantly and they are taking a little bit of a gamble in him this year. Slauson would provide great insurance and we have plenty of cap now.

Slauson isn't signing here (or anywhere) to be insurance. He's a starter.

I think he wants to be a starter and get starter money. I don't think The Bills are looking at him for that.

It's ridiculous to think the Bills believe Mills is a better option than a player of Slauson's level. They wouldn't have brought him in if they didn't think he was going to be the new starter at RT.

My guess is the Bills told him they wanted him to play RT, to which he said "Ok, then I want a long-term contract comparable to the top half of the tackles in this league." Buffalo would have trouble with that. So he left.
