  1. 1. This game was lost, IMO, by one guy and one play because of one reason: Ego. If Nate Clements didnt want his name in the paper for an INT, the Bills win. You learn that in seventh grade. There are not a lot of plays in a game where it is a definite that if a play is made different the outcome is different. In this game there were two, the last play TD and the 4th down play. Nate is a jerk, and he cost us a win. That was unconscionable.

    2. Anyone that blames this game anywhere close to Drew didnt see it. He played well. He didn't ty to force anything, he was very accurate, he stepped up in the pocket, he threw the ball away a couple times. He had nine total incompletions and Campbell dropped two, Shaw one, Neufeld one, and perhaps another. That fumble was all on Moulds (along with the design of the play that shouldnt have been backwards, there was no reason for it).

    3. The offensive line was pretty good. Not great, but for the first game together with all the injuries and new faces and question marks, they held up well. The Villarial penalty, however, was obviously a killer. I didnt see it so I don't know if it was blatant, or if his hold allowed Willis to get the first down. Did they show a replay on it?

    4. Seaking of Willis, he is getting his speed back slowly but surely. His stats may not reflect it but he accelerated better than I had seen him in pre-season. He is powerful and a very smart runner. He really could be a great one. I thought they should have used him more on third downs and in the backfield with Henry more.

    5. Schobel made some very nice plays in the run game but didnt do much at all as a rusher. The defense, overall, was very much as advertised, except for Nate the Hot Dog. I was surprised that Gray had PP playing the fourth corner in dime packages instead of K. Thomas. I am not sure if that is a permanent thing.

    6. For those who thought that the Bills should have gone deep, or that Evans wasn't a factor, you probably werent at the game. Almost every time Evans was wide, which was a lot, there was a safety WAY back, probably out of the TV screen view. I was shocked at how much cred they gave to his speed.

    7. I think that if Lindell had made the 41 yarder, than MM would have chose to kick the 51 yarder. But at that point I had zero confidence in my kicker, too, and I though the punt there was the right call. This was also a Jax team, whose QB had struggled the whole game, against a defense that had given up two FGs, with one of the best punters in the game. That was a tough call, and I understand both sides, but I would have done what MM did under those precise circumstances.

    8. The play-calling was fair to pretty good for me. The early reverse was totally unnecessary. You need to set that up a little more. There were a couple of very nicely designed plays, especially the reverse screen to Willis with TH in the backfield. The play-action at the one was not a bad call. There is ZERO, I repeat, ZERO problem with passing on 3rd and one or 3rd and two or three, the problem exists when you ALWAYS do it, or, say, like 56 times in a row. Those who say you should always run there are as big a stubborn bastard as Killdrive.

    9. I didnt see the purpose of having Shelton in on third downs, which he was a few times. He didnt and doesnt do much for me, also I will have to watch the game on the tape to know for sure. campbell could be a real factor if he would hold onto the ball.

    10. Nate Clements stinks. His coolguyitis outweighs his play-making at this point.

Good and accurate points Kelly. I agree with you on these accounts. It's amazing over the years how many corners you see going for picks on a long 4th down pass. It boggles the mind. Just plain stupid.

  2. I'm really not sure which game you watched Rockpile or where your seats were, but the effort was there in spades. To see that commitment to the run against the best Run D in the league was a thing of utter beauty. It's a different offensive philosophy than some have seen here in a LONG time. Maybe that's it. I don't know. If you weren't impressed you're probably in for a long boring season. Me, I've been waiting to see this approach to our offense for a long time. The D was all over the field except for 2 prayers and that is a lack of effort? Moulds looks like he's back in ProBowl form but the fumbles he had were indeed inexcuseable. I agree on the TE hands comments :-).

  3. They did "go get" a first down; several of them in fact.

The Jags were "stuffed for the run" the entire drive and couldn't stop them.

Why throw the ball and risk stopping the clock when you can just keep running it and the defense can't stop you?

I don't give a rat's ass who picked who to do what.

And they were playing to win until stripes flew a flag at a buried lineman on a 3rddown dive.

When the chips were down, we did attack the Jags and they couldn't stop us. That's what I liked seeing.

It was refreshing wasn't it? ;)

I must say I really don't know how to react to this loss. They did so many of the things well today I've wanted to see done since early last season. It's definitely a strange feeling. Honestly it feels like the throwback game to me

  4. I'm eager to see JP too, but on a day when I see Drew being Decisive in the pocket, getting the ball out quickly, showing very good accuracy with receivers, not throwing INT's, and managing the game well (which BTW is what we've ALL been SCREAMING for).....Bringing in a QB who will need at least 2 years to learn how to read NFL defenses is not even something I would consider thinking about.

  5. I'll bet those odds aren't nearly as amazing when the offenses are in 4down territory.

I don't either. I just think the huge potential gain from the FG attempt far outweighs the potential gain from a little extra field position. We had far more to gain from a FG than a punt and I'd think that teams who went for the 7pt lead would win more often than teams who went for a little extra field position, especially with that much time on the clock.

Now if it had been a 59yrd FG instead of 49, or if there had been 1:30 left with the Jags only holding 1 timeout, or if the Bills were playing into a stiff breeze, then I'd probably have leaned toward giving the ball up.

But a 49yrd kick on a warm, dry field with the wind at his back that would have put the Bills up the full touchdown with 2 1/2 minutes left?

The payoff as compared to the short punt is so much greater that I think you've just got to take the shot.

Your points are not one's that I can argue really. It's a feel thing. The people I learned the game from would have advised to punt and let the d play though, that's all, and I agree with them. 4th and 13 odds are about the same as making a basketball shot from half-court! And Lindell is about 33% beyond 44 yards.

  6. I stand on the side that even if you have a guy like Vanderjagt, the right call is the one that was made. Yes I've read all the theories about playing to win vs. playing not to lose but it's really a sound, dare I say "no brainer" decision amongst the friends , and past coaches that I've been involved with in my meaningless football career. Take a look at the odds of a team going 80 vs. a team going 60, you'll be amazed. With a D like the one we have , it was the right call in my camp, but I do realize there are some "risk-taking" (IE. Martz) type coaches out there who would feel differently. Bottom line in my book is that we gave up 2 absolute Prayer passes to lose the game. There were mistakes made as there are in every NFL game, but I really can't put the balance of the game on that call.

  7. What they didn't show on the TV view was that there was a defender behind Shelton in the endzone and a lob pass with no throwing lane would have proved a very strong risk for an interception. Taking the sack there was a good decision. People can look to three or 4 different plays in the game to blame the loss on if they want to and that can't really be argued, but ultimately it was 2 COMPLETE PRAYER passes that beat us today. It leaves a bad taste because we had the game won. It's really not a whole lot different than the Titan playoff game where our offense left the field with the lead and a miracle won it.

  8. X's and O's are the beauty of the game. To me it's like pitch selection and location in baseball...without it the game would be boring!!!!

    25847[/snapback]

Agreed. It's not everyday on this board I find someone new to talk X and O's with. It's almost like that secret inner circle that Rockpile often mentions :)

Food for thought: I think in the running game this weekend we'll see alot of guard pulling along with the Te's staying in tight at the first level in order to try to seal off the edges against JAX's weak DE's. :D

  9. absolutely it is, it's all about the read. Brady is excellent at reading. But, if you watched last night he didn't send any of the WR's in motion. It was all reading off the TE in this case.

I'm not talking in generalities. I'm talking about the Pats.

I think I've found a new friend (re: gantrules posts in this thread) :)

Oh how I love X's and O's in the afternoon. :D

  10. Give me a break. If Drew played exactly like Peyton did tonight, and Travis played exactly like Edgerrin did tonight, the people on this board would be calling for Travis' head, not Drew's.

Edgerrin did not protect the football in the red zone...TWICE. The second time was with less than three minutes left in the game, at the 1-yard line, in a three-point game. And this is Peyton's fault?

    No freakin' way.

Both Brady and Manning had their share of mistakes tonight, including in crunch time. But I would rate them 1-2 on my list of QBs I'd like to have, that's for damn sure.

You said it Indy. Maybe a post from VA on this would clear things up.... :P

  11. I wasn't trying to be a smart ass Mr Sensitive, and further more it would seem to make much more sense to sell them seperately so I assumed the 7,000 was per. game. Anyhoo " I have no quarrel with you brave Sir Knight" :flirt:

I Certainly wasn't feeling sensitive, really. Trust me. I just think it's really fun when someone tries to jump in and correct a post and the correction is actually incorrect. :w00t:

    Just bored at work.................
