Here is the deal...teams are gonna fleece Beane if he tries to tradeup.  Everyone knows we want a WR, so they will jack up the trade compensation

and to me WR isn't a trade up worth position, yes Julio Jones is a great example but he's the exception not the rule. Toss in did he ultimately win the Falcons a championship? No.

Honestly I'm a wait and see approach, obviously I'd love Brian Thomas Jr but he'll likely go before us but don't feel he's so much better than some of the guys behind him. Yet think a guy like AD Mitchell's stock falling and could be there, if not hope we land a quality pass rusher if not trade back and hope to get a Legette in the early 2nd and get another pick that can help. As we aren't just a WR away, we have plenty of holes on the depth chart and some of them like DL don't have as great of prospects as WR does. Also the idea of two WRs baffles me especially early, how many passes are we expecting these kids to get? As to me Kincaid, Shakier, Cook and Samuel are going to get the majority of looks this year. I'm guessing the rookie might get 80-100 targets at most. Sure I could see taking a flier on a kid in Round 6 or 7 that could also pose as a return specialist and develop yet not likely starting material.

T Lockett, to me, is not the same level as what I expected from Diggs in 2024.  And Lockett was just signed to a deal with a signing bonus, so if the Bills wanted him they would probably need to give a little boost in draft capital to offset the low salary.  I hope the Bills go in a different direction than him.

I wasn't advocating we add Lockett just it make more logical sense to move on from the 30 plus year old WR vs Metcalf.

Yes, I am all for trading a lower draft pick for one of the vets.  I think Beane would stay away from the divas that require both draft capital and money, so J Jeff/Aiyuk/Higgins would be out.  But other options remain:

For instance I use the Tenn + DHop as an example, if they take Rome at #7 then DHop would be prime candidate to deal for a 4th.

Similarly C Godwin at Tampa could possibly be moved since they just poured big bucks into M Evans.

D Metcalf might be a possibility with new management wanting to craft a team.

I think after Beane does one of those type of moves to replace Diggs the draft becomes more in line with what we expected before.  Maybe trade down and get that 3rd back.  DL and WR would top the list but we can't count out the love for a S or CB.

If anything new management would move an aging Tyler Lockett over Metcalf.

fwiw since they are above us...all the talk in Dallas today is that they are focused on Jonathan Brooks

In Round 2 I hope otherwise Jerrah and company going to be over drafting by a long shot.

A WR at 60 is basically a 3rd round prospect. Can’t expect too much right away.

Jayden Reed was picked 50th overall last year, Rashee Rice was drafted 55th overall last year, Marvin Mims was drafted 63rd overall last year, Tank Dell was drafted 69th overall last year. All of them put up better numbers individually than we got from Sherfield and Harty combined last year.

Anybody remember how many guys last year Beane thought had a 1st round grade?

Beane admitted that he doesn't have many first-round grades on players this year.

The seventh-year general manager wouldn't reveal how many first-round grades he has on players, but he said it's "not great".

My preference is for him to retire to preserve his health.

If he came back as a depth player cheap, that would be OK.

I'm not sure I'd want him back as a starter. He has lost some speed. He compensated with his football smarts, but smarts will only get you so far.

    Make him an associate coach.

The one strategy that I have always subscribed to is getting day 1/2 talent in day 3 because of poor medicals, off the field concerns, etc.

We have seen this pay off for teams in the past.

    Mathieu

    Hill

    Biadasz

    Trey Smith

    Paye

    JOK

    Myles Jack

    Mixon

Those guys all fell due to medicals or off the field stuff. And they all wildly outperformed their draft position.

So who are the red flag guys who have great talent, and a not so great background?

There will be no blood letting in Sabreland, other than a bunch of assistant coaches. The Sabres are done changing coaches every two years. This is still a young team and it just takes longer to develop in the NHL. It sucks but that's how it is.

What sucks more is we have a GM that honestly thought that he could have a goalie right out of college play in the NHL at a high level. Sorry all off season most of us were crying for a veteran goalie to replace Comrie (and I for one also wanted Levi to develop in Rochester) and give us a 2 goalie situation. I also have issues with Samuelsson going into the season and he answered to me he's not a top 4 guy. Also keeping both Zemgus and Okoposo felt foolish in the preseason as they aren't all that great. Granted we did add Byram but took until the trade deadline to get him. I'm hoping against hope we find a good HC but have some serious doubts. Toss in have little faith of our GM putting out a NHL ready roster.

My first choice is Quenneville.  Then Berube.  They check all the boxes, especially Quenneville.  The Sabres have done a lot of good faith things for the NHL over the years.  Time to cash that in and ask for Coach Q to be reinstated.

My guess is it will be Seth Appert, who will be Granato 2.0.

Quenneville likely never living down that scandle. Guy Boucher is an interesting guy, yet he seems to wear thin after two seasons based on previous stints but maybe he has finally learned in Toronto.
