Anybody remember how many guys last year Beane thought had a 1st round grade?

    https://atozsports.com/buffalo/bills-fans-news-first-round-of-2023-nfl-draft/

Beane admitted that he doesn't have many first-round grades on players this year.

The seventh-year general manager wouldn't reveal how many first-round grades he has on players, but he said it's "not great".

My preference is for him to retire to preserve his health.

If he came back as a depth player cheap, that would be OK.

I'm not sure I'd want him back as a starter. He has lost some speed. He compensated with his football smarts, but smarts will only get you so far.

    Make him an associate coach.

The one strategy that I have always subscribed to is getting day 1/2 talent in day 3 because of poor medicals, off the field concerns, etc.

We have seen this pay off for teams in the past.

    Mathieu

    Hill

    Biadasz

    Trey Smith

    Paye

    JOK

    Myles Jack

    Mixon

Those guys all fell due to medicals or off the field stuff. And they all wildly outperformed their draft position.

So who are the red flag guys who have great talent, and a not so great background?

There will be no blood letting in Sabreland, other than a bunch of assistant coaches. The Sabres are done changing coaches every two years. This is still a young team and it just takes longer to develop in the NHL. It sucks but that's how it is.

What sucks more is we have a GM that honestly thought that he could have a goalie right out of college play in the NHL at a high level. Sorry all off season most of us were crying for a veteran goalie to replace Comrie (and I for one also wanted Levi to develop in Rochester) and give us a 2 goalie situation. I also have issues with Samuelsson going into the season and he answered to me he's not a top 4 guy. Also keeping both Zemgus and Okoposo felt foolish in the preseason as they aren't all that great. Granted we did add Byram but took until the trade deadline to get him. I'm hoping against hope we find a good HC but have some serious doubts. Toss in have little faith of our GM putting out a NHL ready roster.

My first choice is Quenneville.  Then Berube.  They check all the boxes, especially Quenneville.  The Sabres have done a lot of good faith things for the NHL over the years.  Time to cash that in and ask for Coach Q to be reinstated.

My guess is it will be Seth Appert, who will be Granato 2.0.

Quenneville likely never living down that scandle. Guy Boucher is an interesting guy, yet he seems to wear thin after two seasons based on previous stints but maybe he has finally learned in Toronto.

    Oh well in that case!

So many variables if we took Mahomes at 10 though as could be debated we'd never gotten a 3rd for Tyrod as doubt Mahomes sits on bench his rookie year here. Also with no White on defense is it what we've seen? Do we still trade up for Edmunds or take another LB? I'll say it. I don't think Patrick Mahomes have the success we've seen him have in KC if we took him instead.

It’s doubly painful that the Bills traded him to a team that was 10 steps ahead of the Bills from a talent standpoint at the time. Jones, Kelce and Hill, their cornerstone HoFers were all there. I think they’ve still out done us in personnel but the gap shrank considerably just by virtue of standard NFL erosion and different team building timelines.

It’s like if the Dolphins traded us Marino while we had Reed, Thurman and Bruce already on the roster as a perennial playoff team.

Even if Mahomes is in the NFC, on a team like the Saints, maybe he still stands in our way in the SB but it would feel much more like an all-time rivalry. Allen V Mahomes in the final game of the year. And with a Dennis Allen or Sean Payton and that roster, we would have the edge on personnel.

Ultimately, we birthed the generational dynasty. Much like the Jets did when they knocked out Drew Bledsoe (and they still are miserable about it.)

    And this graphic is pain.

The 5th turned out to be Tommy Doyle and Edmunds lead to our extra 4th this year so the trade still keeps giving for us for now.

What about Sutton ? I think they could get it done for like a fifth round …

I think the depth at DE is the shortest of any position … there are S and CB I like into rounds 4-5

Sutton for a 5th be a steal yet think he has a big contract so have to be after June 1.

    Not true.

By the time rookie salary replaces existing player in top 51, we'd only be adding approx $2.5-3.0m.  That's a ballpark estimate, but it won't be much higher than that. We already have that in available cap room.

We will need some the Tre money for Practice Squad/signings throughout the year onto roster.

But we should effectively have $5m or so to spend in FA, post June 1st.  They could easily sign a 1yr deal with added voided years to fit a "Leonard Floyd" type for that.  Just like LY.

Come on over Michael Thomas, reunite with Brady and Curry.

I wouldn’t be relying on finding a post June 1 Leonard Floyd signing again … you can sign a guy but does mean it will work out as well as Floyd did ..

DE is a very much a need … given the scheme rotation requirements and the question mark over Miller … Maybe not quite as big as WR …

DT, S and CB are all spots that could be talked about on Day 1 or Day 2. As depth on each of them is questionable.

I think if all 20 are gone, he trades back.

It depends what he can get back. Ideally an early to mid  2nd & 3rd this year be best case scenario.

I have said it about a couple of position groups.... this is a MUCH better draft class than last year through the first 120 or so players on the board. My top 100 finishes on the 3rd/4th borderline this year whereas it was late 4th last year. However, a lot of the guys after that are older prospects who have underachieved in college. I don't think 2023 was particularly strong late either tbh... but 2020-2022 were much deeper than this class.

Covid am sure played a big part as caused many of these kids to lose a year or two for development. That or some ended staying in school longer than usual and now considered to be "over aged".

I know the Diggs trade is still a bit shocking, but you don’t trade a young ascending starting RT on a rookie deal.  That would make me question whether Beane is doing his best John Butler before he went to the Chargers impression.

Na Beane wouldn't be dumb enough to give two QBs franchise type money contracts.

This is what I have been saying.  The last 20 years, only one SB team had a WR1 taken in the top 15 picks.  There has never been any team in NFL history to make a huge investment to acquire a WR via trading for a proven one or trading up to draft one and win a SB.  There isn't even a team who signed an expensive one in FA that won a SB.

Making a large investment in a WR via draft picks or free agency spending has a 0% success rate...aka 100% fail rate...in taking a team and getting them over the hump to win a Super Bowl.

Look at what Miami paid for Tyreek Hill who has been arguably the best WR in the NFL (him or Jefferson) the past 2 years and Miami can't even win their division with a 4 game lead late in the season and has 0 playoff wins.  Or look at Raiders an Davante Adams.  Even NE when they had Moss actually LOST in the Super Bowl, although they didn't invest a lot to get him.

Now go look at the top 5 WR's in the NFL...more often than not, they are not on teams in the Super Bowl, let alone winning it.

This board has had an unhealthy obsession with WR as if not having the best WR's is the reason we lose.  We lost in 2020 because we were the worst team on the field in that game.  We lost in 2021 because of our defense.  We lost in 2022 because we got dominated in the trenches and couldn't run the ball in bad elements.  We lost in 2023 because we had no Linebackers and KC abused that mismatch and we couldn't even get Mahomes dirty.

We have never been eliminated because we didn't have enough weapons.  Our stable of weapons the last 4 years is better than a lot of Super Bowl winning teams offensive stables.  We had a top 5, arguably top 3, WR for the past 4 seasons and we have lost in the 2nd round 3 straight seasons.

I mean, I want a WR early in this draft too, we all do.  But this notion we must mortgage the farm to go get one has 0 examples of ever working and weakens a cap strapped team from building the overall roster.  I mean next year, we have a first and 2 seconds to keep adding more ammo to this team, and people want to give it away like sticks of gum.  Not to mention, this is maybe the best WR draft in history, even less need to make a major move.

I could debate the 49ers traded up in 1985 to get Jerry Rice, granted they were the defending Super Bowl champs. Yet he definitely helped them win 3 Super Bowls. Yet I agree I'm not one that feels we have to trade up. The reason people are clamoring for this draft at appears to have not just the top 3 guys and question marks but you can still get an above average WR if get the 6th or 7th guy off the board.

I'm 100% with you here. I don't like the thought that Buffalo would be cool with taking a chance on later round guys.
The whole "As long we have Josh it doesn't matter who our receivers are" thought flies in the face of the Josh and Diggs are better off without each other" hot take that I've been hearing.
My point is. We need elite talent at WR just like all these other teams have (and what you're stating above).

Who was the elite WR in KC last season?

  14. 2 hours ago, Logic said:

Dolphins: have Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, made an offer to OBJ, and have been linked to Xavier Worthy and Ricky Pearsall in the pre-draft process.

Jets: Have Garrett Wilson and Mike Williams, but might draft Brock Bowers or Rome Odunze

Chiefs: Have Travis Kelce and Rashee Rice, but signed Hollywood Brown and will likely draft a receiver high.

Bengals: Have JaMarr chase and Tee Higgins, may draft an offensive playmaker high.

Bills: ....likely to stay put or trade down and take the 7th or 8th best receiver in the class to pair with Curtis Samuel and Khalil Shakir?

I understand the argument for the "Packers model", but it's hard to see some of the other AFC teams doing all they can to get premium weapons, and then consider the notion of the Bills maybe just being happy with whatever's left at 28. I know no one knows anything yet, and it's too early for this talk, but...Bills fans and everyone else in the football watching world have been talking for three offseasons now about getting Josh more help. If their version of that is to jettison Stefon Diggs and then trade down into the 2nd to draft whoever's left at WR....color me slightly worried that that mission will have been accompished.

And chasing points is never the best way to win, instead you hold your opponent to less and/or cause them to make mistakes and take advantage of them. Until our defense can stop KC's offense on more than one drive in the post season we're going to struggle to earn a Lombardi trophy.
