Considering only about 1% of women will make effective soldiers, I'm fine with it.  I can't imagine anything less efficient than having to weed out millions of unfit women if we had to quickly call people up to fight.

I think only about 1% of men will make effective soldiers but there are a lot of non-military support roles each could manage well.

  2. According to Selective Services, " Virtually all male U.S. citizens, regardless of where they live, and male immigrants, whether documented or undocumented, residing in the United States, who are 18 through 25, are required to register with Selective Service."

"Today, ALL conscientious objectors are still required to register with the Selective Service System. A conscientious objector is one who is opposed to serving in the armed forces and/or bearing arms on the grounds of moral or religious principles."

Females do not have to register. If men and women are equal, why is this still the law?

    Your thoughts?

BTW: I have two grandsons in the Army National guard. One is now also in college and the other finished his associates degree and is a new deputy in Ontario County.

Absolutely.  They blew the stadium away.

Yes they did! I was already a fan of the Clash. As forstbitmic said, "Opened with David Johansson who did an Animals cover and not much else."

To be fair, Johansson was out of place at that venue. The crowd was not kind - very impatient.

The Clash "rocked the casbah"! :w00t:

The Who started to sing "Love, Reign O'er Me" just when it started to rain.

All things considered, without the big video screens they have today, a place like the Ralph is the WORST to see a band. I saw The Who at the Rochester War Memorial Auditorium in the early 70's (with Keith Moon) and it was the best!

It's more about the promoters' stupidity of sandwiching Journey between Thorogood and the Stones.   And Journey reinforced it by sucking on stage.   Much unlike The Clash in the following year.

PS -  May that promoter rot in hell

Was that when the Clash opened for The Who concert?

  5. Watching CS commentators outside the stadium, because I cannot HEAR them.

Great idea - whoever decided to put screaming fans that close to the broadcast desk. I doubt I am missing anything profound at this point.

I hope it is an exciting game and the Patriots lose, preferably on the last play of the game.

I don't care about any of the DNA stuff, I just want to know who my grandfather was and who I might have on that side of the family.  My father was born out of wedlock in 1923, and my grandmother never said anything about his father except "he's out of the picture!"................My father never seemed to care that much about, or was intimidated by my grandmother, but now I'd like to know.

Are there any free places to just see birth records while I'm screwing around taking breaks from work (like I am right now) or does anybody have any other ideas like that?

Our local library has a deal with Ancestry.com and you can sign up for "Ancestry Lite" for free. It does not have ALL the features of the paid subscription but you can create a pretty comprehensive family tree. If you have a break and want to get into it more "intensely" sign up for the free trial. Also, there are a lot of free genealogist web sites.

I signed up for "Ancestry"and connected to some first cousins in the U.S. and even one ancestor in Holland who is a very serious genealogist, who can trace my maternal grandparents back to 1589. The way he puts it "we share a few molecules", since our "trees" cross in the 1700's.

My mother died when I was only seven and I lost touch with her family. Now I know that on her side I am one of 23 first cousins!

My paternal grandmother's side I trace through the Civil War and found records going back to 1760. I would really like know more about where THEY came from, probably England..

I do this for a hobby, and do not spend a lot of time on it, but it is interesting!

My current family is large enough (ten grandchildren) to keep me busy without worrying about my ancestors

I am sending in the DNA kit today. (Christmas gift)

Edit: Growing up, our Christmas dinner of all immediate family was seven people. I knew I had a lot of other family members, but we were not close. I think perhaps that is why building a family tree was interesting for me.

I do get the whole argument about kids today being too pampered.  The everybody gets a trophy generation.  I totally get that.

At the same time though cleaning out my room, I found some of mine from when I was a kid and participation ribbons for running 5ks.  Years later for me at least it does bring back childhood memories.   Me I was never the best at team sports but not the worst either.   Though maybe today its totally different with IPhones, Instagram, Facebook, etc.   Everything can be easily looked up for memories.

I'm sentimental I hold onto mine.

I got one in 1964 for participation in Little Loop football with the Lake Shore Lakers.

We had a banquet and Tom Day handed me my trophy and shook my hand!  (AFL days)

My oldest daughter has it now so it will stay in the family.

We knew we were not "champions" but it meant a lot to an eleven year old learning the game.

I have my "Number Tag" that they pin on you for running the Lilac 10K.

For the 10K, I was thumbing my nose at being over 40 AND having to deal with my diagnosis of MS. I worked hard to prepare for it and had an 11 minute mile pace. I hate running, but it was making a statement!  :w00t:

  8. The last "official" Bills team Jersey I got was Kyle Williams. I did not want to pay for a player jersey and have to toss it in the pile of draft failures or players who became free agents and left for greener ($) to another team, or morphed into psych cases.

I selected jersey on an "old reliable" player I respect and will really miss watching.

Like most on the Wall of Fame, I believe I can wear his number for many years to honor his service to the Bills.

everytime i complain how my life is going, i just have to remember some families have it much harder than mine.  these pictures are hard to look at.  god i hope everything goes ok.

You got that right! My daughter and son-in-law are my heroes. They deal with this 24 x 7 and do not complain.

She gave up her career to care for him and son-in-law now has two jobs.

This makes my MS seem like a cake walk!

p.s made it through his lumbar puncture today!

  10. Cheeky was able to get through his latest treatment and come home to celebrate Christmas.

Life is a roller coaster, though for his whole family. Nicole told me she cannot tell me in the morning what her calendar will be for the afternoon. She is a fighter though, and has passed that on to "Cheeky".  Looking forward to a positive New year, as his chemo treatments continue.

He filled out quite a bit, and has had fewer melt downs. I imagine chemo is like steroids, his moods sometimes are Banner keeping the Hulk at bay!

He is learning to say "football", Buffalo" and "Ay-Ay Ay Ay!

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a very Happy New Year to all.

Thanks.  I have to admit, it makes me feel good that a lot of posters come to these threads with interesting things to say.  What I say in the OP is usually less important than the points made in the discussion that follows.

You are too modest, but either way, my point is the same. The threads are interesting AND promote conversation because they are somewhat open ended, which promotes debate.

  12. Shaw66, I always look for threads you start because you put some thought into what you want to say, accept opinions different from yours without tossing barbs, and seem to set the tone for a rational conversation that rises above name calling. :w00t:

Regarding the running game, I think the repetitive running tightened up the defensive "wall" and relaxed the defensive backs just a bit, which set up a few nice passing plays. I had to miss the second half due to family commitments and a defective DVR, but the game ended the way I wanted.

I am also a Josh Allen fan and hope he continues to grow into a QB we can be proud to have on our team.

I really hope the Bills can make Brady look old Sunday. A win would be my Christmas gift!

  13. Naaman is home after three days of intense chemo treatment. He is understandably irritable and cannot keep food down. Most food tastes bad to him anyway!

He and his parents are fighters and aggressively treating his leukemia.

His story (journal), a link to GoFundMe, and information about childhood leukemia can be found here:

Naaman is Old Testament, Doc! I never noticed the Bills Naaman football player until you pointed it out!

Ironically Naaman was a warrior cured of Leprosy after being told by the prophet Elisha to bathe seven times in the Jordan River.

I wish it was that easy today. He will be in therapy for a few years, and odds say he can be cured.
