Seemed like Bryce Paup had a much better than expected season with the Bills.  Maybe even over a 2 year span was amazing.  Think the Bills got more from him than they ever expected when they signed him.

This is the first name I thought of when I opened the topic. But, he doesn't really qualify because overall he had a decent career. But, as you point out, his first season with the Bills was much better than could have been expected and better than the rest of his career, 17.5 sacks, 1st team all pro.

  2. Love the topic OP!

Until this year, for the past many years I've been DVRing the games and watching later. Most weekend days I volunteer refereeing or coaching youth soccer. In California it's quite easy to not know the scores of games, no one cares about football there. But, I normally would call my parents on Sundays, frequently before I'd have time to sit down and watch the games. I remember one game against the Fish, can't remember the year. My mother called and during the conversation I told her I was going to sit down and watch the game after I hung up. My mother said that it's a great ending, I'll enjoy it. Then when I got angry, she said "What, I didn't tell you anything." I still watched the game but after that I refused to talk to her before watching the game. If she called, I wouldn't talk to her and just said I'd call back later.

  3. I see many posts implying that he may not do it. Although "restructure" could include pay cut, I thought that typically when they say restructure it's to add take a portion of the upcoming or current year's salary and make it a signing bonus. For the team, it reduces the hit this year, increases in future years, but costs no extra. For the player, they get more money upfront and the same amount total. The only reason for the player to reject it is if they really want to move on.

  4. I haven't watched yet but did dvr it. Was listening to Maddog yesterday and he was talking about it and when I tuned in he was pointing out errors. One was that the show had Rozelle and Davis making nice at Rozelles retirement, never happened, Maddog said they never looked at each other. Second he said the reason they went to LA had nothing to do with the stadium or the city. It was because he was expecting the NFL to switch to a pay per view TV format and he'd strike it rich due to the size of the LA market. I think another was mentioned but I can't remember. He also talked about how he can't believe how much they whine about the immaculate reception and supposed clipping.

  5. I really wanted him at the time and absolutely feel he would have turned things around. Even though he didn't win much in the playoffs (5-13 record), that wouldn't have bothered me. In most cases, his team wasn't as good as the other team. I.e. in Cleveland he kept losing to the Broncos. In SD, I remember watching some show (Football Life?) that showed him tell his players just before a turnover that if they get the ball, they need to go down immediately. They got the turnover, the player tried to run with it and make a play, and the other team (Pattsies?) took the ball back. He got fired shortly after that and SD went immediately downhill.

I don't think we would have gotten past the Pattsies and Tommy Boy, but I think we would have been much more competitive and perhaps broken the playoff draught much earlier.

Well Pep is going to Houston as QB coach isn't he? I'm not a huge fan of his to be honest. His run as Colts OC was pretty brutal calling 7 step drops every snap with a line like swiss cheese. Canada got promoted with the Steelers which he was always likely to take. I am not saying they ended up with the ideal hire, they didn't. Mike McDaniel was the perfect guy for this offense and they failed to land him. I just don't think you can say "oh it doesn't work." Of course it can work. Will it? I have no idea, but it is clearly harder to make it work with two guys having to co-exist.

I was pretty sure that USC under Pete Carroll had Steve Sarkisian and Lane Kiffin as co-OCs in 2005-2006. Wikkipedia shows Kiffin as OC and SS as assistant HC / QB Coach but I'm quite sure that at least the local papers always referred to them as co-OCs. Not saying it will work for the Fish, just saying I don't think this is really unprecedented (although it may be unprecedented in the pros).

I literally just saw his press conference. My first thought was Mike Tice. Overly macho bull####, we're gonna rip your throats out and eat your children yadda yadda yadda.

I've never heard him speak before and within ten seconds I thought "what a moron".  Maybe he'll be great but I'm so glad we don't have a coach like that. I still remember cringing at Rex's press conference when he was introduced as Bills coach

Really? You cringed at Rex's pc? I hated the hire and hated Rex but actually (and wrongly) started to like him and his being an entertainer at first, until he started to actually coach and then when he started to brag about stupid things like "we won the pre-season" or whatever it was.

Excellent list. I can't really agree with the Talley int/TD and not so sure about the Byrd punt return (I was only 5 and don't remember it, but just from the description it doesn't seem like it made a difference in the big picture), but otherwise they all belong up there.

I remember rooting for the Patriots during their first year with Brady (after we were out of the picture), thinking it's nice they can have some success after so many lousy years.

I agree. When the Bills have been eliminated, especially when it was well before the season was over, I still root for someone in the playoffs. The first time the Patsies were there, since they had sucked for so long and had a nobody sixth round draft pick as their QB, I rooted for the Patsies. Within a year or two of that, I rooted for almost anyone other than the Patsies (my 2nd favorite team has been whoever was playing the Patsies). Of course, it's not like I'm ever a diehard fan of any team other than the Bills.

I kind of assume almost all football fans similarly find a team to root for in the playoffs if their team isn't there. I also suspect that unless there's a team they hate or a player they really like on one of the teams, they probably want the newcomer most of the time.

  10. I thought the Ravens got rid of Smoke because they couldn't utilize him with Jackson. Now people are saying Jackson's problem is lack of weapons? At least as of now, his problem is he's not a good enough passer. He needs to become that for continuing success, at least to be considered a top QB. From everything I've heard, he's a very hard worker. So, he may get there, just not yet.

  11. I was listening to siriusxm nfl radio an hour or so ago. Pat Kirwan said everyone knows Dabol has been hired by the chargers, just waiting for the farce of the NFL rules of not allowing until elimination to make it official. Also said Dabol has his staff in place.

Edit: I guess that Pat Kirwan's information was no more reliable than Adam Shefter's. I'm sad for Dabol as I think the Chargers would be an excellent opportunity but happy for Josh and the Bills.

  12. I listened to Phil Simms last night talking to Mad dog, he made some of the same comments. Said the Colts dominated both sides of the line, completely outplayed the Bills, but Josh Allen made at least six passes that only three other QBs are capable of making.

He is pretty confident that the Ravens will win tonight. Although I generally could care less what the talking heads say, I think because I generally respect what Simms (father or son) has to say, it bothered me that he (Phil) went on and on about how hot a team Baltimore is without any mention of how hot the Bills are. Both teams won close games last week and both have played their best near the end of the season.

His roster decisions have always played more to the vet, than taking risks with a more skilled player.  I'll ask you this, Yeldon or Williams this week?  What will McDermott do?

More skilled based on what? Have you been at all of the practices this season? Pretty sure McD has seen more of the players than you have. Williams had one excellent half that intrigues most of us. I, and I'm sure others, are kind of hoping that he's active even if that means both him and Yeldon are. But, Yeldon has had good games as well in very limited use.

The flaw was in their thinking the Bills couldn't go 96 yards in that time.

I agree. The Bills had horrible field position all half and did nothing with it (except for the 85 yard drive which happened to be the best field position they had all half). I'm sure they expected to score a TD here and if not then the Bills wouldn't be able to do much. As the OP said, Reich also probably believed if they didn't score they'd even get the ball back. If they do score, either a TD or a FG, then there's a good chance the Bills will finally get good starting field position. The entire playbook would be open to the Bills with 105 seconds left. Better to have 7 points before giving us the ball back than 3. Here's the possibilities of what would happen in those last 105 seconds (110 seconds at that point - and yes, I know this is obvious). I suspect the last option at the bottom, the one that happened, they felt was least likely if they went for it.

Scenario, Colts - Bills score Colts Points Bills Points
    They score TD/We don't score, Score 17-7 7 0
    They score TD/We get a FG, 17-10 7 3
    They score TD/We get a TD, 17-14 7 7
    They score a FG/We don't score, 13-7 3 0
    They score a FG/We get a FG, 13-10 3 3
    They score a FG/We get a TD, 13-14 3 7
    They don't score/We don't score, 10-7 0 0
    They don't score/We get a FG, 10-10 0 3
    They don't score/We get a TD, 10-14 0 7

I’d seen a random thing about belief that a coach could be traded but mostly wrote it off as the normal click bait things that we see all the time, but this actually makes some sense...

Reports are the eagles aren’t sure about keeping Pederson, but they haven’t done anything yet. The Jets coaching search hasn’t heated up, and Douglas came from the Eagles....

When was the last time a coach was traded? Gruden?

Last one I remember was Bellicheaat from the Jersey Jerks to the Patsies.
