Yet, they unanimously have asked for the draft to be pushed back. Not just one or two GMs, therefore, without knowing exactly every detail that goes into the process... I'll lean with the people asking for the extension over the bored fans who just want any type of sports.

Do you have a link to support that? The article linked by the OP stated "multiple GMs have requested...". Multiple means at least two and less than all (or it would say "unanimously" or "all" GMs instead). My best guess is that newly hired GMs and teams with new coaches will want any reason to delay the draft, those with continuity are probably more confident of where they are and may see an advantage over others. However, Goodall works for the owners. The GMs who want a delay ultimately would convince their owners to push for it. If enough do, Goodall will delay. If they feel the loss of revenue is higher than the expected competitive return to have more time, they won't push for the delay.

No college player can sign with any NFL team until after the NFL draft.   Bruce Smith was the #1 over all pick in 1985, which the Bills owned because of their crappy record the previous season.  Flutie was taken in the 11th round (#285) of the LA Rams.

I think that Smith rejected the WFL as an option, so the Bills drafted him, but he couldn't have been signed before the draft.   First round draft picks holding out into some time into TC was very common before the rookie salary cap went into effect about 2010 or so.

Back then a team with the first pick could and routinely did negotiate and sign a player before drafting. In some cases the signability decided who they would draft number 1. Bruce signed in February, draft was in April.

On another note, Ralph Wilson fired Wade Phillips because Wade refused to fire special teams coach who had allowed the music city miracle play. Wilson also never paid Phillips what he was the remainder due on his contract either.

Not correct. Wade fired long time special teams coach Bruce Dehaven after the Music City Forward Lateral to replace him with Ronnie Jones who had no clue what special teams was. They were horrible under Jones. Remember reading an article mid season that although it was very rare (not so much now, but don’t remember ever seeing mid season assistant coach changes back then), he was so bad should be replaced mid season. Ralph’s reason for firing Wade was he refused to fire Jones after the season. I think we lost at least 3 games specifically due to special teams play that year. Steve Christie later said Jones had no clue what drills to do at practice and players had to tell him what to do. Phillips claimed he thought Ralph was just using Jones as an excuse and would have found a different reason to fire if he had complied. Perhaps correct, but fans would have revolted if Jones was still a coach with the Bills the next season, even if he switched to a defensive assistant as Wade offered.

To me the biggest head scratcher in Bills history was letting Chuck Knox walk away.

  4. I mean this seriously because I didn't bother to check stats and otherwise have no idea. Has he been a bad OC?

For the Bills, I hated him be cause I hate quitters. But, during the drought only quitters won 9 games in a season. And, although I get that it goes with the territory of being an NFL coach, having your kids harrassed by other kids at school be because of bad decisions by your dad just completely sucks.

So far as the  comment that Marv said, I'm almost positive his "maybe I'll coach" statement came after M.M. quit.

  5. A few weeks ago I went to a HS football playoff game near my house (Mission Viejo, CA - where my son goes to school). It was Mater Dei (a Catholic HS around 15 miles away) vs. Mission Viejo (public HS). I almost never go to HS games, but at the time, Mater Dei was ranked #1 in the US, Mission was ranked #10 in the US.

I only bring this up in this thread because Super Cade was an honorary captain for Mission at that game. I assume he must live in my city, don't remember reading this or seeing this in the articles about him before. I thought it was pretty cool. When I saw the kid out there for the coin toss, I kind of wondered, then they introduced him and I immediately Googled Super Cade since I wasn't positive of his last name, and of course, it was him.

By the way, at that game, Bryce Young, the QB for Mater Dei was amazing. He threw for over 500 yards before they pulled him, I think in the 3rd but may have been early 4th. The first play of the game was a 53 yard strike, second play was called back due to illegal receiver downfield but was a completion to what would have been a touchdown. He had 7 touchdown passes and many amazing throws. He's going to Alabama next year and I can't wait to see how he does with SEC competition.

FYI, Matt Barkley went to Mater Dei, Mark Sanchez went to Mission.

He kinda helped us win the Indy snow game......which was a huge win that.....well...ended a 17 yr drought.....

That was my thought as well. Obviously did not turn out well at all but I don't think we win that game without a couple of key catches by KB and without that win (I guess you can say that about any one game in 2017), we don't end the drought that year.

  Literally, the first time I've ever seen Kelly called "pretty mobile."

I still remember someone asking who was faster, Reich or Kelly, and getting the answer "You could time them with a sundial."

I kind of remember a reporter asking (after a Kelly injury where he came back with a knee brace), "Do you think you can beat Kelly in a foot race with him having his knee brace?" and Levy replying something like, "What do you mean with his knee brace? I could always beat him in a race."

That being said, I know I thought of him as pretty mobile. Never fast, but perhaps due to his strength, size, and toughness was able to make plays running when needed, especially early in his NFL career.

  8. You didn’t miss anything, it wasn’t an article about them, it was a q&a and the entire answer to that question was included in the Two Bills Drive summary.

So so far as extending, yesterday on Sirius XM NFL Radio I heard a former GM talking (sorry, don’t remember the name). He said with a new agreement coming up soon, teams should go all out on extending all players they think may be part of their future. The cap will go up significantly and salaries with it. He twice said it’s like if you had 100% guarantee the stock market will go up, then you should invest as much as possible. He went on to say that agents should be advising clients to not sign extensions because they will be leaving significant money on the table.

I always wondered why successful challenges cost something.  You get two challenges, and a third if those two were successful.  But even if you got all three right, that's all you get.  Get the first wrong and the second is your last, even if it's successful.  I know people worry about slowing down the game, but if the refs screwed up a ruling shouldn't it be overturned without it somehow counting against the challenging team?  I mean, if the refs blow four big plays in a Bills' game, shouldn't they all be overturned?  Just wondering if it wouldn't be better to say a coach can continue to issue challenges until they fail two, or something like that. ?

I agree and have always felt this should be the case. From 1999 to 2016, 37% of replays have been successful, 43% in 2015-2016. So, using those higher numbers, in 57% of the games, there likely would not be any additional replay. Seeing as there were only an average of 1.3 replays per game, not four as would be the case if both teams used both replays, I see the actual impact as minimal. But, it just seems fair that if the refs screw up the call and are successfully challenged, the team should not be penalized by losing one of their challenges.

  10. Excellent article. I'll admit, there were two things I didn't like but both were already discussed. 1) He's not heading to Canton or the pro bowl. I was 100% sure I knew you meant "yet" but didn't feel that's what you said. If read from the perspective of an unbiased writer, I may have thought you meant "ever" but of course this is a "Fan Perspective". And 2) the "we" statement. Of course, easy to critique, far far better than I'd have done. And, I loved the title even if you only wrote half of it.

  11. This is just common sense. I don't mean the exact formula is, but what the formula is basically saying is that there's an excellent correlation between who the favorite is and who wins the game and the higher the point spread, the more likely the team is to win. Of course there's exceptions such as Vikings - Bills 2018, but hence the 98% r squared vs. 100%.

You don't have to threaten to cancel. You guys are overthinking this. What Klos received is what is being offered right now. Just call and tell them what we received and ask if you can get the same. Go on chat if you don't want to speak with anyone and ask for loyalty dept. AT&T/DirecTV wants to keep you as a customer. These discounts are offered every year but you have to ask. It's over $800 in savings plus free movie channels

I finally called just now. I was told that there are no current discounts for Sunday Ticket but he's sure there will be, I just need to keep calling back, new promotions start on Mondays. I ended up threatening to cancel and he gave me $20 off per month my total bill but said that I still should keep calling to get a Sunday Ticket discount. Seeing as it took me 11 years to make this call, not so sure I'll get around to it, but you never know. The phone call all together was exactly 30 minutes long.

Going away for training camp is an unnecessary, antiquated practice that is thankfully coming to an end. I don’t see the Bills remaining in St John Fisher much longer. You have a brand new training facility in Orchard Park, use it. Have open practices in New Era where fans can actually enjoy the experience. SJF is horrendous for fans. Too little parking, too slow of a process to enter, too small of an area, not enough seating.

From a 100% selfish standpoint, I disagree that it's antiquated.

Ok, hard to say disagree because I realize camp is for getting the team ready for the season, not for me or for other fans. That being said, although I've been in California since 1994, I grew up in Rochester and my father still lives in the house they bought in 1954. My mother passed away three years ago, but he's still completely independent and turns 95 next month. My family visits once a year or so and when possible, I schedule it during training camp. So, on July 25th and July 28th, my father, my son, possibly a brother and nephews, will be going to training camp. One of us will be the old looking one.

Hopefully, we don't have any issues. Two years ago we were walking and talking on our way to the stands. My father turned his head to point something out and tripped on the cord cover that was going to the radio announcer's tent. He had cuts on his face and hurt his leg but we still enjoyed watching practice.

Painless? That sounds....confusing to me! I dreaded the process so much I just rolled over years ago and pay whatever they charge (which my wife likes to tell me is A LOT!).

Maybe I try again this year. The ONLY reason I have DTV is to watch Bills games. I have lousy AT&T four daily use, but they dumped NFLN so at draft I went back to DTV a bit. I’m an idiot, but I subsidize the rest of you by paying full freight, so you’re welcome.....

I'm like you Augie. I have had DTV for around 10 years now. Switched from cable partially over a stupid issue that made me p.o'ed and partially for Sunday Ticket. I've never called for a discount although I've thought about it every year. Maybe this is the year I actually do it. Can't see me calling threatening to cancel unless I'm actually ready to actually do it.

    https://www.houstonchronicle.com/sports/texans/article/Texans-fire-GM-Brian-Gaine-after-17-months-13961559.php

"McNair determined that Gaine was a better personnel man than a general manager and didn’t want to redefine the job with the Texans."

What an odd statement.    Being a good personnel man is Job One for any GM.     You can hire other people for cap management, contracts, etc.     I suspect BOB wanted to dictate personnel more than Gaine and ultimately led the coup after thinking he had the GM under his thumb...b

I heard John McClain interviewed on Sirius XM yesterday. He said basically what’s quoted above. The Texans were very happy with Gaine’s personnel decisions, but felt he lacked the skill to run all departments in the organization. He also said O’Brien approves all personnel decisions. He, or perhaps Carucci, brought up that they could have hired assistant GMs to run other departments, no reason given why they didn’t. They didn’t say there were any issues with relationships.

I also found it interesting that NE can block an interview if it’s not considered a “true” promotion. They are given the job description and unless it’s a complete GM job, they block Caserio. They didn’t explain further but I assume the fact that O’Brien has control over the 53 man roster.
