Fantasy football has incorrectly convinced people that they have more football smarts than the average GM. Fans see a list by Kiper/McShay with 1 paragraph blurbs about players and take that as gospel. Hindsight is always 20-20, but I remember there was a very large contingent on here screaming for Clausen. Of course, today, we only have a group that "knew all along" he was going to be a bust I think Johnathan Martin is the perfect example of this. Kiper and McShay had him listed as the #3 OT back in January/February. People saw this, looked at his size, read a 2-sentence summary of him, and concluded he must be our #10 pick. When I see Martin, I see a guy who played in the Pac-10 and didn't have to face many dominant pass rushers. I see a guy who played with an incredibly smart QB who could read defenses, get the ball out quick, sniff out blitzes and avoid the sack. Of course that's my opinion, I only seen him play 1 game last year. I also think there's about a 95% chance we call Kirkpatrick's name with our 10th pick.

Not a Good Showing for Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford
QCity replied to Owen's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The word I often read associated with Martin is "finesse." Not really what I want to hear when I envision a lineman. The National Football Post thinks he "is going to have a hard time keeping the edge clean at the next level." I think the only reason a lot of people on this board are high on him is because Kiper/McShay initially rated him high in January. He's also a Pac-10 player and didn't face many dominant pass rushers. The only game I saw him play was the Stanford-USC game (awesome game) and Andrew Luck seemed like he was running for his freaking life that entire game. I will be very, very worried if the Bills call his name at number 10 overall. -
TEBOW!!! is a Jet! (finally)

Town? More like the circus coming to the zoo! I hope they get off to an 0-2 start, the implosion will be epic. -
He goes on to 7 Pro Bowls, wins Defensive Player of the Year, and helps lead his team to a Championship?

I agree Estro, I didn't want to be the negative guy hehe. I was stunned when I heard the figures, was expecting something like 4yrs $15-$16 mil. I just read that in his productive Chicago rookie season he was a situational player used only on passing downs like last year. Let's be honest, NE racks up a lot of points and teams are forced into the desperation passing game early against them. I think the guy will be productive here sack-wise, but $7M a year for a situational pass rusher is kinda nuts. I hear a lot of people mention the fact that only $8M is guaranteed. Yeah, that's great if we cut him tomorrow. But the guy is going to get at least $7M this year, and still probably have another $5M-$6M left in guarantees. I'm not knocking the player or what the team is trying to accomplish (LOVE the focus on the DL), I just think we overpaid. I hope I'm wrong and the guy turns into an every-down player that's here for the next 4 years.

As someone pointed out, Hannah was a tackle at Alabama. Nice try though.

If you have to go back ~40 years it kind of argues against your point. Today's game is vastly different than the power running game of the 70's. Guard simply isn't considered an impact or premium position.

Great re-sign. He was our best defensive back in the nickle formation last year, which we used about 45% of the time.

Just got word that Tim Russert's mother has kicked Anderson out of her hotel. Uh oh.

Waive Kelsey, draft Quinton Coples DE North Carolina
QCity replied to TheKidd's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Bell is actually the best LT available. Those 3 teams you mentioned all signed guards. -

Add-in Buddy's comments over the years ("can't have enough corners") and the fact that we tried going after Routt and you get a very likely candidate for who we are looking at.
-
Just look at last season. When Bell and Wood went down, the offense started to look like a circus.

Pears is the starting RT, we didn't just extend him at $3+ million a year for him to be a backup.

Mario Williams: Officially a Buffalo Bill
QCity replied to buffalo_bills's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Nooooo Reggie was a LDE. So was Deacon Jones. RDE is Kelsey/Merriman/Carrington atm it looks like. Unless we go all-in and draft Coples/Ingram at #10. -

His statement about the defensive scheme was just lip service for the fans. He left for the money, and no one here can blame him. I think the majority of Poz fans would admit that although he is a very good player he isn't worth $42 million.

His tag number was $22 million for this year. That's a worse cap hit than resigning him. -

They've mismanaged their cap space. They also lost 2 starting offensive linemen this year that they also wanted to keep. There is no way they could have competed with our offer. -

He just signed the largest contract in history for a defensive player. It's definitely not common. -
