I hate, hate, hate that James Brewer pick. I would much rather have addressed CB or SS with one of those 4th round picks, and then taken Barksdale (who IMO is a much better RT than Brewer) in round 5. I actually doubt Barksdale is there in round 5. In response to a previous poster...I too like Shiloh Keo, SS from Idaho. He would be a great special teamer for the Bills and add depth to the safety position. He may be there in round 6.

Yes because Billick obviously knows the value of a great QB.
I think Billick knows the value of building a competitive team through the trenches. Solid defensive front seven and a stout offensive line. Also, as we all will see come draft time (IMO), there is not a QB in this draft worth the 3rd overall pick.
Remember....Ol' Billick has a Super Bowl ring

I agree with his assessment of the QB's.

Irving, Little, and Chekwa.

It must be that delicious southern BBQ, or perhaps the biscuits and sausage gravy. Gosh I miss the south

Great question. One that I can't give an answer for, due to the fact that I dunno THAT much about the logistics regarding college athletics' budgeting and revenue. I DO know that the NFL banning college athletes that get caught accepting money makes ZERO sense for the NFL. It boggles my mind actually. Does anyone else think this is a good idea? If so why and how would the NFL benefit from it?
So...your stance is that it is okay for student athletes to receive illegal benefits?
-
Wow. I like a lot of your posts, but this is waaaaaaaay out there man. The NFL banning athletes that get caught for accepting money in college, meanwhile the kids that accept money and dont get caught get a paycheck. Schools and athletes have been doing it for decades. I'd say less than 1% gets caught. Maybe less than .01%. Pay the kids in college, they earn their universities millions. Banning great athletes for accepting money, while thousands of other athletes are getting away with it just doesn't make any sense. Maybe I'm the only one that feels this way, but I feel strongly that this is rediculous.
So, should only football and basketball players get a cut of the profits, or should all student athletes get paid? Should Doug Berkinshnif, the captain of the Auburn water polo team get the same amount as "icon-entertainer" Cam Newton? Should athletes be paid commensurate with the amount of revenue their respective teams earn for the university/NCAA? Not dismissing the idea, but these are questions that need to be answered.

Cam will be in Carolina. The Bills will go defense with the first 2 picks and grab Christian Ponder/Kaepernick in 3rd. Ponder has history with Gailey as Chan tried to recruit him out of HS.
Nostradamus?

has the Bills taking...
1. QB Cam Newton
2. TE Kyle Rudolph
3. OT James Carpenter
A little different than what Gailey suggested about taking mostly defense in this draft. But at this time of year
you can't take anything people say at face value...even though our good'ol'boys seem like pretty straight shooters.
If they do decide to go with Cam in the first then this mock does make sense...giving him a TE to throw to
and an OT to protect him. Honestly I like this draft...but am concerned about the defense as well. It's unfortunate
that the one time in how many years we have the #3 pick in the draft...and there is NO clear cut, this is the guy,
type of player out there. At least not in comparison to last year with Bradford being the clear cut best QB, Suh being
the clear cut best NT. Someone else on this board also made a good point that we drafted mostly defense last year.
Yep, mission accomplished
time to focus on improving the offense.

Just got the latest issue of Bills Digest. As has been the case for the last few years, there was a pre-draft question and answer column with supposed draft guru Russ Lande, who writes for the Sporting News.
His pick for the Bills? OT Anthony Castonzo of Boston College. Can't say I've seen this one before.
If we spent the #3 pick on Castonzo? Well....as the great Chevy Chase said in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, "If I woke up tomorrow with my head sewn to the carpet, I wouldn't be more surprised than I am now."
-
I strongly suspect that Ponder is their guy, and much to my dismay....I think he will be our pick in the second round. Not that I am against drafting Ponder by any means...I just think that #34 is too early for him.
Just my opinion.
To respond to the OP...I too am intrigued by Newton. The kid is a great athlete, and he throw's a great ball. His accuracy is a bit erratic, but his mechanics are pretty smooth. I think Newton's success in the NFL is largely contingent upon the situation that he ends up in. Ideally, he would most benefit from learning behind an experienced QB for a season (or a large portion of a season). Being drafted by Buffalo, IMO, would be a good situation for him. One of the concerns that I have about Newton in Buffalo, however, is that he will be a self-proclaimed "icon" playing in a small market city. Ala LeBron-Bron James...he plays out his rookie contract and then signs a deal with the Jets or the Bears.

Did he become a drug addict because of the mental illness, or did he become mentally ill because of the drug abuse? Hmmm?? I don't buy into all that marijuana being a gateway drug bullcrap. It all depends on the individual. This dude was probably a train wreck in the making well before he took that first bong hit at age 12.
Few bong rippers and a few beers here and there never hurt anybody. It's all about self-control.

Reed's 6-foot-3, 263-pounds and he recorded 47 tackles, 6 1/2 sacks and 10 tackles for losses last season. At the combine, he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.65 seconds, bench pressed 225 pounds 30 times, posted a 30 1/2 inch vertical leap and a 9-5 broad jump. Reed also had the top 10-yard split among all defensive linemen. I would love to see him in a bills uniform. I would throw a damn brick through my television if the Patsies picked him at #33.
-
I don't agree with your assessment of Reed. The guy is an animal. He plays just like Clay Matthews.
+1
Reed's an absolute savage. He's a big nasty....just what we need to upgrade our linebacker corps.

How bout this one?
1. Marcell Dareus DE/DT Alabama (Denver bites on the mental midget Pat Peterson)
2. Ryan Mallett QB Arkansas
3. Sam Acho OLB Texas
4a. Greg Jones ILB Michigan State
4b. Joseph Barksdale OT LSU
5. Virgil Green TE Nevada
6. Chris White ILB Mississippi State
7a. Darius Morris OT/G Temple
7b. Bobby Boucher ILB/H2O Technician Louisiana State University Mud Dogs

I see absolutely no way Brooks Reed makes it out of the 2nd round. Nor do I see Kendrick Ellis being there in the 5th. Guys like that don't last very long. Obviously that draft would be excellent but I just don't see a lot of those players lasting as long as you do.
I agree, it might be a little far-fetched. I really like Brooks Reed and I would take him with #34, but I think we might have the opportunity to take a really good OT in round 2. What would be your ideal (more realistic) mock draft? Would you dare to speculate?

I proposed this earlier in a different thread, but I believe San Francisco to be our most likely trade-down partner. They have a need at QB, and if Gabbert or Newton slides to us at #3, I think they will be calling. They have an abundance of picks at their disposal (I think they have 12 now), and a new head coach who will be looking to draft the "new face" of his football team. Also, Harbaugh has been reported to be interested in Gabbert. He attempted to recruit him out of high school, as he believed Gabbert was the best pro-style QB of his class. We could likely obtain their 1st, 2nd, and 4th round picks as compensation.
IMO....this would be the best trade-down scenario for us as we would still be able to get a really good player at #7.
-
Who I want them to take...
1. Nick Fairley DT/DE Auburn (assuming Dareus is gone)
2. Derek Sherrod OT Mississippi State
3. Brooks Reed OLB Arizona
4a. Colin McCarthy ILB Miami
4b. John Moffitt G/C Wisconsin
5. Kendrick Ellis DT Hampton
6. Virgil Green TE Nevada
7a. Chykie Brown CB Texas
7b. Kai Forbath K UCLA

It seems to me the Moorman, our ALL PRO punter, had an off year due to injury. I expect him to regain his ALL PRO performace next year, if there is a season. I also expect, if he could not perform, he would call it a career. Integrity guy. All in all, my guess is, if the Bill draft the guy from Florida, it will be because Moorman tells/told the Bills his leg was not coming around. Just sayin...
There was some speculation that Moorman's performance suffered, in large part, because Bruce DeHaven asked him to do more directional punting than he has done in the past (not exactly his strongest suit). Moorman's strength is his ability to hit those booming punts with excellent hang time; allowing the speedsters to get down the field and make plays. Moorman is a competitor and a great athlete. I suspect that he is working more on directional punting in the offseason. It wouldn't be a bad idea, especially in the 7th round, to bring in a guy to challenge him during the offseason.
-
All this does is allow them to draft one more guy they would have signed as an unrestricted FA anyways. Alot of those guys are being contacted when the 6th and 7th rounds are going on and they have deals in place within hours of the draft.
In all honesty I would use this extra pick to justify taking a punter with a 6ht or 7th round pick. Moorman was average at best last year and had some real shakey kicks. I wouldn't be surprised if they bring someone in who can boom it to give him a run for his spot.
More likely though it will be used on a FB.

Fitz at times, was the only bright spot this team had last season. His toughness and leadership is an admirable quality. But let's be real here. He's not a guy that we can build this team around. Fitz is a stop gap starting QB and a great backup QB. We still need a guy that we can say is our franchise guy and someone that we can build this team around to become relevant again.
Well, that's like your opinion dude. I don't think it's fair for you to make those assertions yet. We'll have to see what happens next season (if there is a season) before we can proclaim Fitz to be merely "stop gap starting QB." By asserting this, you are just as bad as those posters who assert that "Von Miller is the next Maybin," or "Cam Newton is the next JaMarcus Russell," or "C.J. Spiller is a bust."
The fact is...you just don't know this yet. You're better than that Bangarang.

Who's going to wear the 2011 "official draft hat" on the stage....Roger Goodell? Or perhaps the Bills will send a representative to hold up the #1 jersey, shake hands with Goodell, and wear official hat....I nominate the Elvis dude.
-
No, to the bolded part, IMO.
Great banter in this thread!
Let's take this scenario out a year. What if we have a shot at Andrew Luck? Fitz to the bench game #1?
Now that depends upon whether or not there is a 2011 season. If there is a season, and Fitz improves on his performance from last year, then no....Luck carries around a clip board until he is needed. Let's be honest though...if the Bills lose enough games to get a shot at Luck, Fitz probably wouldn't have had a good year. Consequently, Luck would be the week 1 starter in 2012.
You kind of answered your own question.
-
I keep seeing posts where the Bills draft a QB at the #3 pick and then have him sit for the whole year. My question is why have them ride the bench?
If you look at the recent 1st round QB picks, you see alot that started as rookies: Big Ben, Bradford, Flacco, Ryan, Stafford, Sanchez, etc.
IMO, if you think the guy you drafted is your new franchise QB, you might as well let him start getting the experience that only playing the game can give. The Steelers won a SB with Big Ben being a rookie, the Ravens made it to the AFC conference championship with Flacco as a rookie, so its not like you would be throwing your season away by starting a rookie QB.
You make the point regarding rookie 1st round QB's staring in their first season, but for many of them there is a very good reason they are thrown to the wolves. I will use the QB's you mentioned as an example.
Ben Roethlisberger - QB before he was drafted: Tommy Maddox Stats: 3414 yds 18 TD 17 INT
Sam Bradford - QB's before he was drafted: Marc Bulger, Keith Null, Kyle Boller Combined Stats: 2060 yds 8 TD 16 INT
Joe Flacco - QB's before he was drafted: Kyle Boller, Steve McNair, Troy Smith Combined Stats: 3180 yds 13 TD 14 INT
Matt Ryan - QB's before he was drafted: Joey Harrington, Byron Leftwich, Chris Redmon Combined Stats: 3573 yds 18 TD 15 INT
Matthew Stafford - QB's before he was drafted: Dan Orlovsky, Daunte Culpepper, Drew Henson, John Kitna Combined Stats: 3180 yds 17 TD 19 INT
Mark Sanchez - QB before he was drafted: Brett Favre (We all know what happened to Brett) Stats: 3472 yds 22 TD 22 INT
My point is...there were very good reasons for all of these QB's to be thrust into the starting role in their rookie season.
2010 Stats Ryan Fitzpatrick: 3000 yds 23 TD 15 INT...in 13 games. Given Fitz's performance in 2010, do we really need to put a rookie QB on the field just because they are a 1st round pick? Furthermore, do we really need to use a 1st round pick on a QB at all?
