  1. (hey, no jumping ahead.) f
  2. indeed. this one poster seems to enjoy sitting on the sidelines, nameless, making catcalls and taking jabs. he/she has been doing it for quite some time and it's both sad and amusing, considering this one poster has not broken any news, spoken to anyone in authority or provided any value or insight to many discussions as far as i've seen. not a bad gig, minus the lack of pay, i guess. jw
  3. and? jw i did some investigating and reported that they are not close to making a decision. so what's your point?
  4. +2. there's music snobbery, and opinion. but it's unfair to assume that we should all be holding hands, singing kumbaya, and believing everything is good and shouldn't be criticized. this is not a debate: Rolling Stones vs. f(n)ickelback. and if writing that makes me a snob, well, guilty. and i'll happily serve time in that pithy jail if it means a lifetime of listening to good, relevant music. an hour of schittleback, would be akin to a year in the hole. jw
  5. to clear up a couple things: first, Mr. Wilson chose to return my call, so not sure if there was any agenda. Mr. Wilson isn't one to "spin" news, so i highly doubt he was sending a message to Cowher by saying what he said. he wasn't stalling, he wasn't posturing, he was simply answering a question. secondly, to one poster, Mr. Wilson reiterated his intention to build a winner and turn this team around. and thirdly, i didn't do the sabres game or the swannie. spent a quiet night at home with my wife. fourthly, relying on Mr. Wilson's comments that the search is ongoing and planning to kick back for most of this weekend and watch some football that actually counts. playoffs? ... as i tell colleagues, they're a mere rumor in these parts. jw
  6. right, not much earth-shattering news, but Mr. Wilson at least named Cowher as someone they've talked to. his tone of voice regarding "you'd have to ask him," sounded to me like they've left it to Cowher, and he hasn't really been that interested. in the updated version of the story, you should note that Mr. Wilson said: "we don't want to hire a coach with a splashy name," and instead is looking for someone who "wants to come to Buffalo." reading between the lines, that suggests they're not counting on Cowher. Mr. Wilson at least did clear up the timetable, but saying there isn't one and that they're not rushing into making a decision. that leads me to believe that there's still candidates out there to interview. so rather than expecting a press conference this weekend, it might be further down the road. Mr. Wilson did not want to say much, and that's understandable. the search is ongoing. jw
  7. am told Frazier has NOT turned down the Seahawks. jw
  8. still in editing. i'll try to post something quick when it moves. but i've got a little more to write and a few interviews to do. and sorry, can't say. jw GG: didn't know if this rated starting a new post. my apologies. JUST MOVED. IT SHOULD BE OUT ON INTRAWEBS.
  9. just filed a story for editing following my brief chat with Mr. Wilson regarding the team's still ongoing coaching search. should move shortly. jw
  10. says someone named "Fatty McButterpants." sorry, couldn't resist. jw
  11. nothing political about this one, just a chance to loosen the fingers last week: ¶ amateur night (an ode to my late wishful friend bukowski). 3 a.m. jan. 2, 2010 ¶ ¶ the young drunk punks were out tonight, ¶ and so was i, ¶ trying to catch up to their staggering good moods. ¶ crosseyed happy, ¶ stuffing the jukebox with crumpled bills, ¶ punching numbers that failed to add up ¶ waltzing matilida, and lady gaga and kings of leon, ¶ all the liquor inspired quicker and ¶ selling out faster than billy joel on broadway. ¶ ¶ and i stood at the bar like a siberian cynic ¶ - because there's one on every frigid corner - ¶ wild turkey and acidic ¶ calling out the kids and posers, ¶ and hungover red-bull amateurs ¶ still trying to catch a ride on the new year wave of hope. ¶ rebels without a glue, ¶ goddamn, ¶ the sloppy symbolists in a midnight marching band of left foot anarchists ¶ tripping in full trumpet bloom ¶ saxless and tromboned, ¶ blowing pissy giggles and wet farts ¶ that wash down easily ¶ with flat beer and slippery nipple shots. ¶ ¶ and i laughed and laughed and laughed ¶ until the place was empty ¶ when the bartender summoned ¶ a last alcohol call ¶ amidst the sticky floors, empty bottles ¶ crooked tables ¶ and unfulfilled desires. ¶ ¶ and i stood alone ¶ raw and proud, ¶ because as old as i've become ¶ no one could keep up. jw
  12. and yet there is a big difference between making music and selling out. it's not a simple equation and it's eventually what separates the bands that matter and those that fade on the credibility scale and start failing the smell test. though, i'll begin with the mighty 'Mats, i'll build the list with such groups that resonated: off the top of my head, The Clash, Zepplin, Nirvana (though their run was short), Mr. Johnny Cash, Steve Earle, Pearl Jam (though their relevance seems overburdoned by its lead singer, which can also be said to a far further degree about U2 and REM), Tom Waits, Lucinda Williams, the Pixies, Camper Van Beethoven, Husker Du, Drive-by Truckers, Minutemen, the Faces, Big Star, Maiden, heck AC/DC in my book before their last album, which was OK, but still true to their form. i'll even make the case for the Dixie Chicks, who went the other way, starting as a country pop band, and then becoming serious. then there's the Rolling Stones. though they eventually went south, any band that produced so many perfect rock and roll songs during its first 15 years, and features the godfather of rock and roll in Keith Richards, can be forgiven for its missteps. i'm not naive, just a perfectionist, seeking nobility by demanding the most out of my music, and not cheap sellout artists, like what Sting has become and Rod Stewart, whom i'll never forgive for his sugary remake of Waits' classic "Downtown Trains." i'll make the case that you might be the naive one, and do so humbly and without disrespect. there is always a place for finger in the air, kick you in the gut rock and roll, and it doesn't require to be pimped on broadway, among the fannypack bus tour crowd. and if that's what billy joe and company need to get laid these days, well, good luck with that. jw ADD: backing up in my own way in agreeing with Dean and Astrojanitor's points.
  13. as my friends like to say, "wawrow: rhymes with sorrow." and yes, Lori, you're now on the list! jw
  14. it was sometime in the mid-90s, and a friend and i hit this dingy rock bar on vancouver's south side on a friday night, and it just so happened that fickleback ... oops, pennyback, .... damn, something wrong with this keyboard ... crapback ... was playing. they were big on the vancouver club scene back then, and we didn't know anything about them. it wasn't so much going to see them, but just to go out and have a bunch of beers. well, as the night drew to a close, and the last song had been played, or so we thought, the lead singer gets to the microphone and begs the people in the place to clap for an encore. to which someone at our table got up and yelled: "get off the stage, you guys suck." at which point they did, in fact, leave the stage. well, they showed us by eventually making it big. and yet, they still suck. it was an immemorable night, if not for how it ended. jw
  15. well, if Charles wanted to make headlines, that would've been the route to go. jw
  16. no, it seems i can still post here, too. jw
  17. since he had Mr. Wilson on the phone, you'd think Charles would've asked about who the Bills next coach might be. sheesh! jw
  18. it's far too late to backtrack and make false accusations. i have not touched your post, Steely. i provide you kudos for your creative idea in an attempt to bar me from this thread, and, as stated, i would have not participated until discovering your mistake. you were "thisclose" to having it work. thisclose. wow, how frustrating. now you're stuck with another thread in which i see nothing that bars me, john wawrow, from participating. jw ADD: should be noted that "warwow" reference is also copied in in Hazed and Confused post, No. 2 on this thread.
  19. it's right there in the disclaimer in your original post. i wasn't planning on posting, until i realized you were referring to someone else. jw
  20. for a poster, you have a terrible way of spelling my name. jw
