  1. here's a simple example: Let's say the Bills signed an unrestricted free agent to a five-year deal for $20 million total, that included a signing bonus of $10 million and a base salary of $2 million for each season of the contract. In salary cap terms, the Bills are charged only $4 million per year, arrived at by prorating the signing bonus over five years and then adding the base salary. But in real dollars expended, or payroll, that player cost the Bills $12 million for the first year. That's a difference of $8 million between what the player was actually paid (cash to cap) and what his official league cap charge was for the initial season of the contract.

The Bills had a serious "cash flow" issue , which played a heavy role in their 5 year deal with Rogers Communications to bring football to Toronto. Rogers paid the full $78 million upfront which gave the bills the cash they needed to operate.

here is a Buffalo News article: "Bills cap- economics 101" from last Feb

  2. Great! Please share a little more. Who scored and how?

    1st Period Summary

    TIME TEAM SCORING DETAIL SCORE

0:23 Tyler Myers (4) ...... connolly won a faceoff, Myers ripped a shot from the point.

    Assists: Tim Connolly Buffalo 1-0

    1:11 Jochen Hecht (9) ..... deflection

Assists: Craig Rivet, Henrik Tallinder Buffalo 2-0

2:11 Clarke MacArthur (11) ...... in close, rebound off goalie

Assists: Toni Lydman, Steve Montador Buffalo 3-0

  3. I thought Marty Schottenheimer would make a lot of sense for the new HC but there has been little talk about him. Buddy Nix and Marty are probably friends from San Diego.

freinds?....try, best friends....they also are a perfect match professionaly.....look for the second Father/Son combo to hook up with Marty & Brian (shanahans in wash). Marty will come out of retirement for 2-3 years with a guarantee that his son takes over after him. All these other interviews are window dressing (just my opinion). btw, one of those very reliable ESPN experts (cough) named mort says Marty is ready.

  4. a member of our forum was having a difficult time......another member(s) of our forum recognizing the seriousness of the situation, stepped foward , took action and offered considerable help, resulting in a positive outcome. please refrain from making light of something you may not be fully aware of.

  5. I am sorry if this post is uncalled for on THIS forum...but for some of you, and YOU know who YOU are...

    THANK YOU!

(And to somebody in FLORIDA...THANK YOU for making "THE CALL.")

Some of you will know what THIS is all about...for the rest, just please disregard this.

(THIS POST IS FOR A VERY SPECIFIC REASON)

welcome back.....nice to see this post.

  6. So, as the Bills "national scout" last year (and as a former "assistant GM/director of player personnel at SD), Buddy is NOW badmouthing the Maybin pick??

Where was buddy last winter/spring? Why wasn't he saying "don't even put this guy on our draft board--he's a one-year wonder"??

Are we saying that as a guy who built the Chargers as their assistsant GM, Nix had NO juice in a war room containing the likes of serial draft killers Ralph, Guy, Modrak and DJ??

there's a pecking order on "final" say when it comes to the draft. that order was unclear last year. meaning, the bills never publicly said who had FINAL say (it's pretty clear shanahan has final say in washington). Levy claimed he ruled by committee. Russ Brandon took over for Levy.....that leads me to believe Russ had it, with input from Modrak and Jauron. I'm sure Russ kept looking at Ralph in the War room for reassurance. All the Scouts, including Nix, worked for Modrak who is in charge of the college draft. Nix specializes in the South region, so he probably wasn't even the main scout looking at Maybin. John Guy is in charge of current NFL Free Agent scouting. i don't have a link, but it has been reported that Jerry Sullivan said that DJ pushed hard for maybin. Nix has distanced himself from that pick with his comment that "one hit wonders get you in trouble". who knows what nix did or didn't say just prior to handing in the card for Maybin. but one thing is for sure, at that time he was pretty far down the food chain.

  7. When asked about 2008 No. 11 overall pick Aaron Maybin, new GM Buddy Nix said "We try not to take guys who are one-year wonders; they'll get you in trouble."

Nix was trying to say that if he was in charge last April, Maybin would not have been the pick. He started just 10 games at Penn State before declaring early for the draft and needs to put on a ton of weight. It's too early to call Maybin a bust, but he has to be considered a project at this point. The "pass rusher" had no sacks in limited snaps this season.

I'm guessing he would have gone with Orakpo or Cushing here. Was it Ralph with the final call last year or Russ?

probably DJ & Modrak convincing Russ.....hopefully someday we will find out who gets the credit.

ya gotta love Nix's comment......what a breath of fresh air.

  8. I have to re-watch Nix's interview, but didn't Nix say that they will go down their list and give each candidate time to say yes or no prior to interviewing the next candidate? He also threw in the caveat that they won't be hand-tied and wait forever for a candidate, they will give them a deadline and are prepared to move to the next candidate if a response is not received by the deadline??

With Fewell being our Rooney Rule satisfier....

i remember him saying that they would try to do the interviews in the order of preference....that it didn't make much sense interviewing your 5th choice early on......(ignoring shanahan's visit.....russ and ralph met with Cowher, Nix met with Fewell, should be interesting who is the next one).

  9. Doubtful about the denver $$. I think most coaching contracts have a clause that if they get another HC job, the contract is null and they don't get more $$.

while that might be true for most contracts......shanahans deal specifically continues at 50% of the original $ 7 million. denver is still on the hook for $3.5 million a year for 2010 & 2011. his signing with wash does NOT void that.

  10. If you gave Emeril Lagasse rotten ingredients and told him to cook you dinner, would you eat what he served you?

Not saying Dick and Perry are at the top of their profession, but the results they had might have something to do with the quality of the talent on the field.

absolutely correct......reminds me of the famous Bill Parcells quote... " They want you to cook the dinner, at least they ought to let you shop for some of the groceries."

  11. http://www.buffalonews.com/452/story/913499.html

"I think it went well," Fewell told The News on Tuesday. "They did it the right way. It was an extensive interview. It was extremely thorough. We covered everything, every aspect of the head coaching position."

the article goes on to say that the Bills are likely to take a couple of weeks conducting interviews before making a decision on their head-coaching search.

  12. the bills already interviewed a head coach......his name is Bill Cowher......the interviewees were Russ & Ralph.

the bills have now interviewed two head coaching candidates.....

Perry Fewell got his interview monday night.....he said it was extensive and he was satisfied it was done the right way.

  13. Agreed, the GM was bait for Shanahan

although probably impossible to prove.....i bet when shanahan notified the bills he was taking his name out of contention.....he had a verbal deal in place with washington. the redskins will be investigated for making a sham of the rooney rule.
